Abstract:
This chapter examines the content of parental responsibilities. It argues that when someone takes on parental responsibilities, she takes on duties to provide a subset of what is collectively owed to all children within a society. That subset must include duties to provide the goods that children are owed that can only be provided by a constant caregiver—filial goods. It also must, in a just society, mean that it is possible for parents to do their duties, yet for the society to remain just. This constraint, along with the constraint that the child’s rights take precedence, allows us to rule o

Abstract:
It is commonly believed that parents have special responsibilities toward their children—weightier duties than they owe other children. How these responsibilities are acquired, however, is not well understood. This is problematic when claims about parental responsibilities are challenged—for example, when people deny that they are morally responsible for their biological offspring. This chapter presents a theory of the origins of parental responsibilities that can resolve such cases of disputed moral parenthood and applies it to the cases of accidental fathers and gamete donation. Abstract:
Most people believe that parents have moral rights and responsibilities regarding their children. These rights and responsibilities undergird the nuclear family and are essential to the flourishing of its members. However, their basis and contents are hotly contested. Do a child’s genetic parents have a right to parent her? Many people’s gut responses affirm the importance of genetic ties, but the moral justification for tying parental rights to genetics is unclear. Parents are permitted to make far-reaching decisions about their children’s medical care, education, religious practice, and disc

Explains the most effective ways to discuss the legal and financial responsibilities that come with the end of life and tools for managing them—such as wills, trusts, estate planning, and cash management—in the context of financial psychology. Dying is complicated. It presents myriad challenges at a time when people are least prepared to deal with complexity. Typically, aging people turn to their adult children and grandchildren, their caregivers, and their professional advisors to guide them in their final years. Under what circumstances is it morally responsible to procreate with the intention of having children, in view of what parents owe their children? Three conditions are necessary for procreation to be morally responsible: the worthwhile-life condition, the doing-more condition, and the basic-needs condition. The worthwhile-life condition requires that a life be expected to be worth starting in the sense that existence is not noncomparatively bad for its subject, containing much that is bad without offsetting compensations. The doing-more condition requires that parents do more for their childre

The core of a theory of moral parenthood is an account of parental rights and parental responsibilities: how we acquire them and in what they consist. Such a theory can help us identify who the parents are and tell us what they may do to and for their children, what they should and should not do, and what claims they have against others who might interfere or assist. This chapter explains why a theory of moral parenthood is needed in order to resolve pressing ethical questions relating to parents and children. It outlines the method of reflective equilibrium that is used throughout the rest of
