Full textThe goal of that study is to demonstrate that the substructures of the concept of sustainable development have been part of history and that two centuries of economic development have given birth to that notion, which has just emerged following the people's awareness of the existence of questionable means of development. The present social and economic concerns which set up the notion of sustainable development originate from the questioning of those who fathered the economic doctrine. We have then steered our analysis around to the genealogical recording of the sustainable development, and around to the consequences that sorne economic theories generate in terms of moral questioning. The chosen theories number five : Growth and development, in other words the emergence of the concept ofsustainable development, by taking the human aspect into account (chapter one) The place of social relations, or social transformation in the chain of history (chapter two). The strength of demographic constraints, that is to say the understanding of the importance of the population, which is in the heart of the worries concerning sustainable development (chapter three). The place granted to natural resources, that is to say the analysis of the relation to nature among the economists (chapter four). The environmental question, which amounts to asking the question: how to hold an arguable position in the relation between environment and economy ? (chapter five). And finally, the last chapter (chapter six) will be dedicated to environmental, social and economic issues, applying a concept, sustainable tourism, as an element of measure

Full textTwo of the main contemporary stakes concentrate around the Jordan and its basin, what makes of it a unique case. On the one hand, rivalries around water, a irreplaceable resource more and more scarce in an arid area. On the other hand, the continuous strains whose consequences show its effects beyond Near East. The deep reasons of those antagonism must be looked in the geographical and hydrological features of the area and also in the symbolical and religious representation which the oriental people makes of the ‘blue gold’, through the sacred of seculared thoughts or documents. The recent historical evolution, the role of London or Paris led to the creation of states, irregularly equiped in water. After 1967, Israel changed its status of downstream state to the one of upstream state, thanks to its territorial conquests. Giving up the main part of those acquisitions would make him losing this privileged position, hence strong strains with the main protagonists of the basin finding again an attractive location in case of withdrawal ( Lebanon, Syria, palestinian territories ). Conversely, non strategic countries on an hydraulic viewpoint and located rather at the periphery of the basin maintain better relations with the jewish state ( Egypt, Jordan, Turkey ). A new war based only on this stakes seems however hypothetical although more and more announced or theorised. International law, in its numerous declension that can be enforced to the current conflict, is an option of settling to favour, through the protection of international watercourses with purposes other that navigation, civilians victims or under occupation, and the environment
Kuentz, Anna. "Un siècle de variabilité hydro-climatique sur le bassin de la Durance : Recherches historiques et reconstitutions." Thesis, Paris, AgroParisTech, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013AGPT0047/document.
Full textUnderstanding and predicting hydrological variability is becoming a major issue to improve water resources management at the watershed scale, as climate variability and multipurpose use of water increase stress on the available resources. In France, the Durance watershed (South part of the Alps) is both characterised by numerous water-related activities such as hydropower, irrigation, water supply, tourism, and by a wide range of meteorological contexts ranging from mountainous to dry Mediterranean watersheds. As a consequence, this watershed appears as very sensitive to observed and projected climate variability, with an impact on water resources sufficient to question the current balance between users. In order to better forecast the Durance watershed hydrological variability, tracing back its past evolution is an essential step. Indeed, historical knowledge provides a better understanding of how the watershed works, and put into perspective hydro meteorological projections for the next century. The main goal of this Ph.D. thesis is then to improve our knowledge of the hydrological variability of the Durance watershed over the last century. Two main themes have been developed. The first step focused on historical research, bringing to light 11 centennial time-series of daily streamflow on the Durance watershed. Those data were quite well documented, allowing us to follow the evolution of the methods used to construct some of those time-series. Based on recent streamflow time-series, a simulation process allowed us to quantify the uncertainty associated to the methods used in the past, and to highlight the significant biases they carried on some periods of time. A correction process was then developed, leading to the partial revision of some of the time-series. A second step involved reconstructing hydrological time-series at different points of the watershed. An original method, called ANATEM, has been introduced and exhaustively applied to rebuild climatological time-series at the watershed scale. This method is based on the use of large scale climatological variables (atmospheric pressure fields) combined with regional scale observations (observed precipitation or air temperature). Those reconstructed climatological time-series were then prescribed in a rainfall-runoff model, allowing the computation of hydrological simulations on the 1884-2010 period. The comparison of the simulated data with our 11 centennial observed time series allowed us to validate our hydro-climatological reconstruction chain over more than a century. Finally, the observed and simulated time-series illustrate the climatological and hydrological variability of the Durance watershed. This variability is characterised by the succession of alternatively dry and humid periods lasting for ten to fifteen years, and by a slight trend to streamflow decrease. These long-term hydrological time-series will then put into perspective future investigations on water resources available over the next century

Full textMedicinal and aromatic plants in Albania is an economic sector that exerts great pressure on the natural resource and causes the deterioration of the habitats of plants and even puts them at risk of extinction. The overall aim of the thesis is to provide new complementary approaches to improve the knowledge base on PAM resource in Albania. The first part of the thesis deals with the work that had to be made on the existing (inventories and studies) to draw lessons and identify potential gaps. The Work on the Albanian archives covering the period from 1920 to 1986 and various studies conducted between 1988 and 2010 have made it possible to identify the various devices of resource management. A harvestable part was collected as historical data and structured as a database. The second part of the thesis proposes a method of habitat modeling operated from GPS traces of the gatherers using mainly concepts from the "Time Geography." The collection of information is based on a participatory approach (crowdsourcing) involving gatherers as information contributor. GPS tracks are processed and analyzed by a model that uses a set of filters to select only those portions that belong to trace's action of picking in strict sense. Determine the action of gathering come back to indirectly detect the location of a plant. The successive application filters of the instantaneous speed, of the spatio-temporal density, of the surface and the mean variation of angles used to model the collection area (zc) that the aggregation at the different scales used to reconstruct the exploited habitat. The construction of the theoretical model has been translated into the SQL language and implemented in a spatial database to facilitate automated data processing. This model has been tested on three herbs: sage, rosemary and linden. Comparison of the results of modeling, represented as synthetic maps on one side, with the land data (photos georeferenced) on the other, have helped to change the model initially and validate results a second time. Building a database that can integrate the treatment outcome of GPS tracks and historical data archives, while restoring the form of map views or statistics used to demonstrate that it is possible to integrate and crossing data from sources of different nature and origin. Despite a limited number of experimenting, the coupled to the database "BD OPAM" model, laying the first foundations of a monitoring foreshadowing adaptive management of PAM

Full textInnovation in ornamental plant breeding is commonly obtained by hybridization with newly introduced genetic resources. During the 19th century, golden age for rose breeding in France, Asian roses were introduced in Europe. Our objective here was to study and explain the evolution of rose genetic diversity in France during this period of time. The diversity was studied at the genome scale and at the candidate gene scale. A large sample of 1228 garden roses illustrating the French rose diversity from this period of time was genotyped with 32 microsatellites markers. A wide diversity, structured into sixteen genetic groups, was observed. A geneticdifferentiation was detected between ancient European and Asian accessions and a continuous temporal shift was observed in cultivated hybrids from a European to an Asian genetic background during the 19th century.Frequent crosses with Asian roses along the 19th century and/or selection for Asiatic traits may have induced this shift. Some phenotypic traits, like continuous flowering, became overriding traits. Eleven candidate genes, which were potentially selected during the 19th century, were sequenced and their diversity was analyzed on a subsample of 365 roses. Simultaneously to the genetic background, some genes are gettingcloser to Asian alleles. For the KSN gene, an increase in the frequency of alleles carrying the retrotransposon copia, responsible for continuous flowering, is observed
Couix, Quentin. "Ressources naturelles, thermodynamique et théorie économique de la production : une perspective historique et méthodologique." Thesis, Paris 1, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020PA01E010.
Full textThis thesis examines the methodological questions raised by the consideration of the physical dimension of the economic process in economic theory. For this purpose, it is mainly interested in the thermodynamic conception of the economy, developed in particular by Nicholas Georgescu-Roegen and Robert Ayres. More precisely, this thesis studies how the thermodynamic conception of economics is embodied in two formal representations of production – the neo-thermodynamic theory and the flow-fund theory – and how these approaches compare with the neoclassical theory of resources. To understand the methodological issues associated with these various theories, the thesis emphasizes questions related to modeling and interdisciplinarity. It shows that the neoclassical theory of resources and the neo-thermodynamic theory share the same conception of modeling, which results in the use of aggregate production functions. However, this representation of production turns out to be inadequate to account for the physical dimension of production, both conceptually and empirically. The flow-fund theory, on the contrary, constitutes a radical methodological break with regard to the aggregate production function. It is more capable of understanding the physical dimension of production from a conceptual point of view, but suffers from a lack of application. Overall, the thesis shows that the methodological issues linked to modeling should receive more attention when it comes to accounting for the physical dimension of the economic process

Full textThe history of the eel fishery has been an activity emblematic of the evolving culture of the Kamouraska region and a source of identity for the region’s fishing population. The snake-like appearance of the eel and its mysterious life underwater made it a fish subject to multiple interpretations in the belief systems of several peoples. From its rise to its decline, the historical geography of the eel fishery is a medium for exploring the larger relationship of the peoples of Kamouraska with their environment. An integral part of the transhumance of First Nations peoples, it was equally an essential part of the fishing and agricultural subsistence activities of the French colonists of the region and became an economically important market activity in the 19th and 20th centuries.. The decline of the eel fishery in the 1970’s provides testimony to the long-term effects of environmental degradation of the St. Lawrence River. Full textAny water policy oscillates between multiple vocations - social, environmental, economic, patrimonial - and arouses frequent controversies. It deploys itself according to sectorized actions, to contradictory interests and to different social representations. Today, the confliction about river landscapes re-organizes itself around a new purpose promulgated by the Water Framework European Directive: reach the " good ecological state " in 2015. Therefore, the rearrangement of the intentionality of the action is the context of my doctoral research. This one approaches the landscape at the same time as object of the knowledge and as decision-making tool. I postulate, that in front of the diversity of the social expectations and in front of the multiplicity of the objectives to be seized by the decision-makers, it is important to be able to refer to a frame integrator of reflection and action. The landscape constitutes for me this frame. In this perspective, it is envisaged as a tool of mediation capable of bringing a new "socio-territorial contract". The hypothesis of the landscape mediation thus constitutes the horizon of my contribution, which presents the methodological foundations of an approach which, applied to the case of the river landscapes of the Sèvre niortaise, is leaned on the construction and the sharing of an historical knowledge
