Kim, Daniel Eunseung. "From rest to rest : a comparative study of the concept of rest in Mesopotamian and Israelite literature." Thesis, University of Aberdeen, 2015. http://digitool.abdn.ac.uk:80/webclient/DeliveryManager?pid=225663.

Full text
Abstract:
This study examines the concept of rest in Mesopotamian literature (ML), the Deuteronomistic History (DH), and Chronicles. In the ML, the concept is expressed in four ways: 1) rest as a symbol of divine authority; 2) rest as a benefit offered to those being ruled; 3) the temple as the resting place of deities; and 4) the provision of rest to deities. A paradigm is formulated through which one may view the concept as a “cycle of rest,” where a state of rest moves from the provider (deity) downward to the recipient, and then back upward to the initial provider. “Noise” is the metaphorical disrupter of rest. In the DH, various rest-terms are employed by the Deuteronomist to express specific aspects of rest: 1) the noun menûḥâ demarcates the arc of the promise and fulfillment in Deut 12:9 and 1 Ki 8:56, and it is a spatial concept (land of inheritance and the temple); 2) the technical formula (nûaḥ hiphil (1) + l) portrays the divine provision of rest; 3) alternative words that mean rest such as šqṭ are used to express periods of rest and unrest; 4) the secondary use of the verb nûaḥ (hiphil (2)) depicts the placing of the ark or cultic vessels/objects. 1 Chronicles 22:9 is programmatic for the concept in Chronicles. The focus in Chronicles is on a proper relationship with YHWH (instead of the spatial emphasis in the DH) due to a post-exilic understanding that the inheritance had already been lost. In contrast to the monarchic period narrated in Kings, cycles of rest emerge in Chronicles with post-Solomonic kings and is more comparable to Judges. The end of Chronicles portrays an era similar to Judges, when the nation is en route to a new political arrangement with YHWH—similar to the Chronicler's post-exilic circumstances.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to compare the two architectural techniques REST and GraphQL. This thesis will compare the two techniques and what defines them. A literature study and experimental study are carried out by the researchers. Four applications have been developed that include the ability to disable and to enable caching for both technologies to test the performance effect of caching. Earlier work has not covered the effects on caching related to these two frameworks. The literature study results point to that REST services are up to date and GraphQL is a technique with a shorter history, but that has declared growth in the industry and is a well suited choice for example when bandwidth matters in mobile phone applications. In the experimental study the tests showed slightly better results on average for REST API in terms of total response time (ms). Depending on the intended project there are many factors that need to be evaluated before making a decision on which framework to use.

Abstract:
Predicting language outcomes in children who at age two are "late talkers" is a concern of Speech Language Pathologists. Currently, there is no conclusive data allowing specialists to predict which children will outgrow their delays and which children will not. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the effect of a receptive language delay on the outcome of the slow expressive language delayed child, and determine whether or not it is a viable predictor of poor outcomes. The subject information used in this project was compiled from the data collected and reported by Paul (1991) during the Portland Language Development Project (PLDP). Children in the PLDP first participated in the longitudinal study between the ages of twenty to thirtyfour months. They were categorized as being slow in expressive language development if they produced fewer that fifty intelligible words during this age range. They were then subgrouped into an expressive-receptive delayed group if they scored more than one standard deviation below the mean on the Reynell Developmental Language Scales. Of the twenty-five subjects with complete data over the five years of the study, nineteen were considered to be solely expressively delayed, while the remaining six were classified as having both an expressive and a receptive language delay. Lee's Developmental Sentence Scoring (DSS) (1974) was used to track the subject's expressive language abilities to the age of seven. DSS scores were analyzed yearly, using the Mann-Whitney nonparametric statistical test. This would determine whether the subjects considered to be both expressively and receptively delayed were exhibiting more difficulties in their expressive language abilities than those subjects with expressive delays alone. The results of the study indicated that significant differences did not exist between the two groups. Therefore, there was insufficient evidence to conclude that a receptive language delay at twenty to thirty-four months of age is a feasible predictor of lasting expressive language delays. This leads to the recommendation that additional research be conducted focusing on areas other than receptive language abilities as being predictors of poor expressive language outcomes.

Siddiqui, Manal. "No rest for the wicked? : exploring sleep in nineteenth-century Gothic literature." Thesis, University of Kent, 2016. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/57230/.

Full text
Abstract:
Sleep has long been overlooked in critical literature. It is often viewed as a state of passivity and so, an invalid area of research. However, this thesis argues that the depiction of sleep and sleepers in nineteenth-century gothic literature is reflective of historically-specific anxieties regarding sexuality and gender roles, such as those related to the New Woman, prostitution, and homosexuality. Similarly, concerns regarding urbanisation and scientific progress, particularly in relation to the latter's perceived displacement of religion, are shown to be apparent in the enactment of sleep in gothic narratives. Theories of sleep and dreaming are examined from a number of perspectives, illustrating the uncertainty which categorises the state. Ahistorical 'social facts' about sleep (predominantly founded in the relatively recent sociological interest in the subject) are shown to be related to nineteenth-century ideas of the state, and how best to enact it. This discussion of sleep chiefly draws on socio-historical readings. However, psychoanalytical ideas are also relevant, particularly in the discussion of dreams, and in relation to the sleeping enactment of repressed desires. In applying multiple critical approaches there is an attempt to develop existing analysis of gothic literature, as well as to contribute an original perspective on the seminal texts studied. Sleepers in the gothic are considered in terms of their physical appearance, where they sleep, and who they sleep with, and each aspect is shown to embody nineteenth-century attitudes regarding morality and sexuality. Portrayals of sleepers are further analysed in relation to their role in the narratives, and shown to be distinctly gendered, thus offering further understanding of gender roles (and responsibilities) in the gothic. Far from being innocent in their passivity, sleepers are shown to contravene a multitude of social and moral laws without waking, and thus, to contribute to the gothic genre's reputation as a transgressive literature.

This creative nonfiction dissertation is a book of essays that explore the author's life and relationship to Upstate New York. The project also connects this experience to gender and trauma. Though the topics range from local history to cosmetic surgical procedures, the essays are collected by how they illuminate cultural tensions and universal truths. These essays are preceded by a critical preface that examines the differences between essays collections, books of essays, and argues for the recognition of narrative nonfiction as an artistic choice.

Norris, Sharon. ""Simply the best (better than all the rest?)" : an investigation into the Booker Prize, 1980-1989, with particular regard to the general rise in business sponsorship of literary awards during the eighties, and the likely effects of the Booker on fiction." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 1995. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/2398/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis was planned as an attempt to investigate the general increase in the number of literary prizes in the 1980s and particularly those sponsored by business. However it is also an investigation into the specific workings of the Booker Prize as the best known literary award of its kind in Britain, and into the effects that prizes such as the Booker may have had on fiction. Part 1 deals initially with the history and founding of the Booker Prize. Then in Chapter Two it covers some of the broader issues involving literary awards in general, such as the tendency among them to encourage a conflation of business and aesthetic ideals. Part 2 deals with the issue of patronage for the arts and with the predominance of particular social groups among the authors, judges and members of the Management Committee of the Booker Prize. I also examine how certain types of supposedly aesthetic evaluations arise and how they subsequently come to predominate. In the final part of the thesis I look at the issue of standardisation as it relates to the novels which won the Booker Prize during the 1980s.

Abstract:
Representational state transfer (REST), is an architecture style for network related software. It was proposed by Roy Thomas Fielding as his Ph.D. dissertation in the year 2000. It intended to improve scalability and simplify the designing. In 2016, the Swedish tax agency (Skatteverket) has begun replacing old services related to their information system (BasInfo) with RESTful web services. This requires rigorous testing, planning, and evaluation to assure it works. At the same time, they adapted agile as their development process, which added additional requirements for how the software is going to be tested. The goal of this thesis is to provide research about methods and frameworks that are meant for testing REST. It includes defining what functionalities a test framework should have, and how it stands in regards to the agile practice. We will conduct a literature review, which will describe the methods and frameworks, by how they work, their purpose and an analysis of what functionalities are relied on. They are evaluated based on their drawbacks and advantages in regards to agile view on time, quality and learning curve. From our research, we discovered there was two type of methods and frameworks. It indicated that a framework should have the capabilities of a general-purpose programming language, support generation of test cases and test data. Furthermore, it also showed potential in the aspect of agile’s view on time, quality and learning curve.

Abstract: The technical element and the meat/flesh join to built the body. According to the concepts of cyborg and hybrid, here conceived as aspects of the posthuman, I intend to map the manifestations of that body in some works of literary Science Fiction (SF) published since the early 90¿s. Such a choice of the date is due to the down of the cyberpunk movement which, on one hand, left marks and residues in SF literature and, on the other, cannot be declared dead. For these thoughts I use mainly the ideas of deterritorialization and reterritorialization (Deleuze e Guattari), anthropo-decentrism (Roberto Marchesini), and hospitality (Jacques Derrida), as well as the concept of cyborg (Donna Haraway) and hybrid (Bernard Andrieu). The rhizome method and somen of the Caos Theory allow to question the bodily manifestations in the chosen corpus. The concepts of "body", "meat/flesh" and "technical element" are sketched aiming to make possible this hybrid on the conceptual field and, therefore, the analytical practice

Abstract:
AbstractDiscussing Charles Dickens’s American Notes for General Circulation and Bleak House in conjunction with Mary Seacole’s Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands this chapter traces a crucial shift in mid-nineteenth-century literature which consolidates British imperialism via “enlightened” differentiation from the United States and culminates in the more paternalistic rhetoric following the 1857 Sepoy Rebellion. While travelling both authors construct conciliatory images of the English home that do not overtly challenge the sensibilities of the British reading audience. In her travel account, Seacole utilises a confident tone often directly addressing her readers more familiarly than the Black authors before her. Dickens too uses excessive overt narrative comment to promote an idea of a shared sense of indignation at lacking American manners in his travelogue and at the misguided international philanthropy of Mrs Jellyby in Bleak House. Both their consolidating tonalities rest less on complex introspection than on an explicit reassuring British familiarity. However, while Dickens increasingly understands British familial feeling as tied to whiteness, Seacole contests such racialised conceptions of national belonging.

Abstract:
The study of a interaction fluid-structure problem requires the calculation of fluid forces acting on moving boundaries. Since the first studies carried out by Stokes, a lot of work has been performed to derive various expressions of fluid forces, in particular for the case of simple geometry, such as infinite planes, spheres or circular cylinders. These bodies are subjected to elementary motions, namely harmonic motions or Dirac acceleration motions, (i.e. constant speed velocity motions). The present paper exposes a review of fluid forces exerted on accelerated rigid body in an incompressible viscous fluid initially at rest. The principal objective of this paper is to carry out a synthesis of the current literature and to develop a general analytical formulation of the fluid forces in order to deal with more general rigid body motions. The analytical formulation is exposed in the present paper for fluid forces acting on any moving body. This approach is limited to low displacements of the solid body, i.e. the non linear convective term of NS equation is not taken into account. The non-dimensional numbers is pointed out and detailed. The different solutions given in the literature are especially discussed with the influence of the viscosity compared to the irrotational model.

Abstract:
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is difficult to detect before the onset of symptoms; further, PD symptoms share characteristics with symptoms of other diseases, making diagnosis of PD a challenging task. Without proper diagnosis and treatment, PD symptoms including tremor, bradykinesia, and cognitive problems deteriorate quickly into patients’ late life. Among them, the most distinguishable manifestations of PD are rest and postural tremor. Tremor is defined as an involuntary shaking or quivering movement of the hands or feet. Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS), Hoehn and Yahr (H&Y) scales are the most common rating scales that quantify the severity of PD. Due to the lack of consistency in these diagnostic tests, researchers are looking for devices for quantification and detection that can provide more objective PD motor assessments. Additionally, since there is currently no cure for PD, temporary PD symptom suppression is an active research area for improving patients’ quality of life. In this survey, the current state of research on Parkinson’s disease hand tremor quantification, detection, and suppression is discussed, especially focusing on electromechanical devices. The future direction of research on these devices is also considered.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper presents applications of a control-volume finite-difference method to flow problems in cylindrical geometries. The method is an extension of the method known as ETUDE, which is an Euler-explicit in time, transportive-upwind convection, second-order diffusion, finite-difference estimate. The primary purpose of this paper is to present an interesting new method that comes about from control-volume considerations, i.e., from a proper extension of ETUDE, to solve problems in cylindrical coordinates. One- and two-dimensional test problems are computed to illustrate the properties of this new method. The predicted results of the two-dimensional test problem are compared with similar calculations of the spin-up of homogeneous fluids reported in the literature. With the properties of the method established, it was applied to investigate the spin-up of a two-layered, stably stratified fluid initially at rest in a cylindrical container. The effect of the stable, density structure on spin-up is discussed.

Abstract:
An experiment study on the cross flow-induced vibration of a flexible cylinder with two degrees of freedom had been conducted in a towing tank. The test cylinder was a 45 cm long Tygon tubing with outer and inner diameter of 7.9 mm (5/16 in) and 4.8 mm (3/16 in), giving a mass ratio of 0.77 and an aspect ratio of 56. It was towed from rest up to 1.6 m/s before slowing down to rest again over a distance of 1.6 m in still water, covering the range of Reynolds number from 1500 to 13000 and reduced velocity from 4 to 35. Multi-mode vibration and sudden shift between different modes were observed. The vibration amplitude, frequency and mode were quantified. The results obtained during the brief constant towing speed were expressed in term of the corresponding Reynolds number or reduced velocity. These findings were cast with respect to the existing knowledge in the literature.

Abstract:
Some of the well known formulations for topology optimization of compliant mechanisms could lead to lumped compliant mechanisms. In lumped compliance, most of the elastic deformation in a mechanism occurs at few points, while rest of the mechanism remains more or less rigid. Such points are referred to as point-flexures. It has been noted in literature that high relative rotation is associated with point-flexures. In literature we also find a formulation of local constraint on relative rotations to avoid lumped compliance. However, it is well known that a global constraint is easier to handle than a local constraint, by a numerical optimization algorithm. The current work presents a way of putting global constraint on relative rotations. This constraint is also simpler to implement since it uses linearized rotation at the center of finite-elements, to compute relative rotations. I show the results obtained by using this constraint on the following benchmark problems — displacement inverter and gripper.

Abstract:
This work is devoted to the study of the extended surfaces transient response. Although, the steady-state fin analysis has attracted considerable attention for a very long time, the interest in the transient response started in the last quarter of the past century. Several publications have appeared since, either analytical using the 1-D, conduction model, or experimental. Perusing the pertinent literature, however, we have observed that, in all previous published papers the authors treat the transient response of extended surfaces, or fins, like regular solids. However, fin endeavors rest on certain fundamental concepts, leading to some simplified assumptions, that we shall briefly discuss in the next section, which allows using the 1-D conduction model, and affect their steady-state operation. Therefore, the need for re-examining and revising the previously used methods becomes apparent. However, the authors are indebted to the pioneer workers on this topic that opened new avenues in the field of extended surface heat transfer. The aim of this work is to offer a different point of view to this problem, by introducing a new spatial coordinate system, and a new time scale. The solutions presented here, rest on the previously mentioned certain fundamental concepts developed recently. In the following we show step by step, how the existing pertinent equations and formulas of fins' transient response, are transformed to new simpler forms, expressed in terms of more appropriate dimensionless parameters, in accord with those appearing in recent publications. In the following, we confine to the analysis of constant thickness longitudinal and pin fins subject to specific1 boundary conditions. Each case is accompanied with an example that, for reasons of comparison are taken from the literature. We also discuss what is meant by "the time required for transient response to attain the steady-state condition."

This work is devoted to the study of the convective radial fin’s transient response. Although, the steady-state fin analysis has attracted considerable attention for a very long time, the interest in the transient response started in the last quarter of the past century. Several publications have appeared since, either analytical, using the 1-D, and the 2-D conduction models, or experimental. Perusing the pertinent literature, we have observed that, in all previous published papers the authors treat the transient response of extended surfaces, or fins, like regular solids. However, fin endeavors rest on certain fundamental concepts, leading to some simplified assumptions, which we shall briefly discuss in the following sections, which allows using the 1-D conduction model, and their effect on steady-state operation. In addition, the bulk of the previous works refer to longitudinal and pin fins, while very few studies treat radial fins. Therefore, a re-examination and revision of the radial fin analysis is needed. The authors are indeed indebted to the pioneering work by previous researchers on this topic who have opened new avenues in the field of extended surface heat transfer. In this work, we present a new method, developed recently, which employs a new spatial coordinate system. It is also our intention to offer a different point of view to this problem, from those presented in the literature. The solutions presented here, rest on the previously mentioned certain fundamental concepts developed recently. In the following sections we show step by step, how the existing pertinent equations and formulae of the circular fins’ transient response, are transformed to new simpler forms, expressed in terms of certain more appropriate dimensionless parameters, from those presented in previously published papers. We confine our analysis to the constant thickness radial fins subject to specific boundary conditions. For reasons of comparison, the solution of a previous example cited in literature is presented. We also give a logical explanation as to what is meant by “the time required for transient response to attain the steady-state condition”. In addition, roots of the transcendental equation for the transient solution, that were not reported before are presented.

Abstract:
In this paper the dynamics of a tubular cantilever, simultaneously subjected to internal and external axial flows, is examined theoretically. The tube is discharging fluid downwards which then flows upwards through an annular region surrounding the tube. Thus, the internal and external flows are interdependent and in opposite directions. Also, the external flow is confined over a certain range of the cantilever length and unconfined over the rest. The Heaviside step function has been used in the literature, for such a system, to model the discontinuity in the external flow velocity occurring when the flow enters the annular region. A more accurate way to model this discontinuity is introduced in this study, in which the logistic function is used instead of the Heaviside step function. The stability of the system is investigated by analysis of the system eigenfrequencies, and the effects of varying the length of the confined region are theoretically studied. The obtained results are compared to theoretical predictions and experimental data from the literature having the same system parameters. The proposed theory captures the same dynamical behaviour as observed experimentally, and has a better estimation for the onset of instability and the frequency of oscillations compared to the theory in the literature.

"Improved Vibration-Model-Based Analysis for Estimation of Arterial Parameters From Noninvasively Measured Arterial Pulse Signals." Abstract:
Abstract With the goal of achieving consistence in interpretation of an arterial pulse signal between its vibration model and its hemodynamic relations and improving its physiological implications in our previous study, this paper presents an improved vibration-model-based analysis for estimation of arterial parameters: elasticity (E), viscosity (η), and radius (r0) at diastolic blood pressure (DBP) of the arterial wall, from a noninvasively measured arterial pulse signal. The arterial wall is modeled as a unit-mass vibration model, and its spring stiffness (K) and damping coefficient (D) are related to arterial parameters. Key features of a measured pulse signal and its first-order and second-order derivatives are utilized to estimate the values of K and D. These key features are then utilized in hemodynamic relations, where their interpretation is consistent with the vibration model, to estimate the value of r0 from K and D. Consequently, E, η, and pulse wave velocity (PWV) are also estimated from K and D. The improved vibration-model-based analysis was conducted on pulse signals of a few healthy subjects measured under two conditions: at-rest and immediately post-exercise. With E, r0, and PWV at-rest as baseline, their changes immediately post-exercise were found to be consistent with the related findings in the literature. Thus, this improved vibration-model-based analysis is validated and contributes to estimation of arterial parameters with better physiological implications, as compared with its previous counterpart.

Abstract:
This study addresses price convergence in two cities in Turkey (Istanbul and Ankara) using the annual data over the three quarters of the 20th century (1922–1998), characterized by prevailing high inflation rates for most of the period. In contrast to the rest of the literature addressing convergence in price levels with a typical result of extremely slow convergence rates at best, we argue that convergence is much easier detected in growth rates rather than levels of prices. We suggest using the bounds testing procedure of Pesaran et al. (2001) for this purpose. We find a clear-cut evidence on the existence of a common driving force behind inflation dynamics in Istanbul and Ankara—a finding that is intuitively appealing from the point of view of economic theory.

Abstract:
This rapid review examines evidence on the structural causes and drivers of gender inequalities in the Eastern Neighbourhood region and how these gender inequalities contribute to instability in the region. While the Eastern Neighbourhood region performs relatively well on gender equality compared with the rest of the world, women and girls continue to face systemic political and economic marginalisation and are vulnerable to gender-based violence. Research on Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Moldova identifies the key underlying cause to be a set of traditional patriarchal gender norms, intersecting with conservative religious identities and harmful customary practices. These norms do not operate in isolation: the literature highlights that gender inequalities are caused by the interplay of multiple factors (with women’s unequal economic resources having a critical effect), while overlapping disadvantages affect lived experiences of inequalities. Other key factors are the region’s protracted conflicts; legal reform gaps and implementation challenges; socio-economic factors (including the impact of COVID-19); and governance trends (systemic corruption, growing conservatism, and negative narratives influenced by regional geopolitics). Together these limit women and girls’ empowerment; men and boys are also affected negatively in different ways, while LGBT+ people have become a particular target for societal discrimination in the region. Global evidence – showing that more gender unequal societies correlate with increased instability – provides a frame of reference for the region’s persistent gender inequalities.

Full text
Abstract:
Truck platooning has many benefits over traditional truck mobility. Literature shows that platooning improves safety and reduces fuel consumption between 5% and 15% based on platoon configuration. In Illinois, trucks carry more than 50% of freight tonnage and constitute 25% of the traffic on interstates. Deployment of truck platooning within interstate highways would result in significant fuel savings, but may have a direct impact on flexible pavement performance. The channelization of the platoon and reduced rest time between consecutive loads would accelerate the damage accumulation at the channelized position. Ultimately, this would lead to pavement service life reduction and a subsequent increase in maintenance and rehabilitation costs. Therefore, the main objective of this project is to quantify the effects of platooning on flexible pavements and provide guidelines for the state of Illinois by considering the aforementioned factors. Although the benefits of platooning are quantifiable, not every truck route is platoonable. For efficient platooning, trucks need to travel at a constant high speed for extended distances. The integrity of the platoon should be preserved because interfering vehicles would compromise the platooning benefits and road safety. An introduced high-level approach considers the volume/capacity of a roadway and the expected number of highway exit and entry conflicts. Using these parameters, each roadway section is assigned a level of platoonability, ranging from one to five—with five being the highest. A framework was developed to analyze the Illinois highway network. It was found that 89% of the network highway is platoonable under average capacity conditions.
