Abstract:
Objective: To determine the three-year survival rate of Class II resin-modified glass-ionomer cement (RMGIC), Vitremer, restorations in primary molars and to compare these results with measurements of survival of Class II restorations of standard restorative materials. Study Design: Data on Class II restorations placed in primary molars during a six-year period were collected through a chart review and radiographic evaluation in the office of a board-certified pediatric dentist. A radiograph showing that the restoration was intact was required at least 3 years after placement to qualify as successful. If no radiograph existed, the restoration was excluded. If the restoration was not found to be intact radiographically or was charted as having been replaced before three years it was recorded as a failure. The results of this study were then compared to other standard restorative materials using normalized annual failure rates. Results: Of the 1,231 Class II resinmodified glass-ionomer cement restorations placed over six years 427 met the inclusion criteria. There was a 97.42% survival rate for a 3-year period equivalent to an annual failure rate of 0.86%. Conclusions: A novel approach comparing materials showed that in this study Vitremer compared very favorably to previously published success rates of other standard restorative materials (amalgam, composite, stainless steel crown, compomer) and other RMGIC studies.

Abstract:
Abstract Provisional restorations are fabricated to protect the prepared tooth structure during the period between tooth preparation and insertion of the definitive restoration. These restorations are also referred to in the literature as interim, temporary, or provisional restorations (prostheses). Such restorations should be uncomplicated and inexpensive to fabricate in a short period of time. Several laboratory and clinical techniques for the fabrication of provisional restorations have been described in the literature, such as the indirect technique, direct technique, and indirect-direct techniques for both single and multiple unit restorations. This article describes a step by step clinical technique for the fabrication of a direct provisional restoration to satisfy the issues of esthetics, patient comfort, speech and function, maintenance of periodontal health, and maxillomandibular relationships while wearing the restoration. Abstract:
Introduction: Although the population is aging and retaining more teeth, there is a lack of studies that address the longevity of dental restorations placed among older adults. Objectives: This study aimed to describe the survival trajectory of dental restorations placed in an outpatient population of geriatric and adult special needs patients over a 15-y span, with particular interest in the longevity of subsequent restorations in teeth that received multiple restorations over time. Methods: Dental restorations of different types and sizes in patients aged ≥65 y treated between 2000 and 2014 at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry were followed until they incurred an event (i.e., restoration replacement, extraction of the tooth, or endodontic treatment of the tooth). Survival analysis and extended Cox regression models were used to generate hazard ratios for selected predictor variables. Results and Conclusion: A total of 9,184 restorations were followed among 1,551 unique patients. During the follow-up period, 28.7% of these restorations incurred an event, and overall the restorations had a median life span of 6.2 y. In multivariable regression models, after controlling for sex and age, a greater number of restoration surfaces were associated with higher risks of failure, and the initial restoration recorded in the database for each participant tended to have a lower risk of failure than that of restorations that included any of those same surfaces that were placed later. This information could be helpful to older adult patients considering various restorative treatment options during the dental treatment–planning and informed consent process. Knowledge Transfer Statement: Informed decision making with regard to potential treatment options is an important component of health and well-being. The present study could contribute to the improved health of older adult dental patients by providing baseline information that clinicians can use as they discuss different restorative treatment options with these patients and their caregivers during the informed consent process.

Abstract:
A paradigm shift in dental caries treatment in paediatric dentistry is viewed towards a wide using of composite resins. This prospective clinical trial are evaluated and compared during 18 months of clinical performance of a microhybrid composite with a nanoceramic resin composite placed in сlass I and II cavities in permanent teeth in children. Thirty one children aged between 7 and 15 years were investigated during this study. About 40 restorations were performed, 50% for each material: a nanoceramic resin composite “Ceram. X Sphere TEC one” and a microhybrid resin composite “Charisma”. The restorations have been estimated by investigators immediately after complete polishing a filling. Clinical evaluation was performed 18 months after replacement by two other investigators using modified USPHS criteria. In addition to hand instruments, a magnifier was used for investigation of the restoration margins. Eighteen fillings with “Ceram. X Sphere TEC one” and 17 fillings with “Charisma” were available. The USPHS parameters were analyzed with the Chi-square test in18 months. The level of significance was p<0.05. Also Green-Vermillion index was used for oral hygiene estimation. There are no failed restorations and secondary caries during the studied period. There were no statistically significant differences among the materials used (p>0.5) regarding the clinical performance. Green-Vermillion hygienic index was 1.48. Thirteen children (43.42%) showed satisfactory level of oral hygiene, 10 children (35.71%) demonstrated good level and 7 children (20.87%) – unsatisfactory level. According to the marginal discoloration and surface roughness criteria, there were no significant differences among the restorative materials (p>0.5). Marginal discoloration was seen in children with unsatisfactory oral hygiene that corresponds to the data of recent study. Marginal adaptation rate was 94.95% for nanoceramic, and 82.35% for the microhybrid restorations. The marginal defects recorded had small detectable defects at the enamel margin of the restorations. According to the anatomic form criterion, there were no significant differences among the restorative materials (p>0.5). Postoperative sensitivity of one nanoceramic and two microhybrid restorations was scored as Bravo at baseline examination, but it disappeared by the 18-months evaluation. For color match criterion, the slight differences were observed in microhybrid restoration in 18 months. This shade mismatch was clinically acceptable (Bravo), with no significant differences noted between the materials studied (p>0.5). The nanoceramic and microhybrid composites have provided acceptable clinical performance over 18-months period. The research pertaining to bigger size of a studied sample and longer observation period is considered advisable to ensure the higher clinical success rate of nanoceramic than microhybrid composite in restoration of permanent teeth in children.

Abstract:
The purpose of this randomized controlled study is to investigate the clinical results obtained over four years and incidence of complications associated withone- versustwo-piece custom made zirconia anchorages, in single tooth implant-supported restorations of the maxillary anterior region. Sixty-five patients, with a total of 74 missing maxillary teeth, were selected in the period from February 2007 to July 2010. Two different ways of custom made zirconia abutment and final prosthetic restoration were evaluated: a standard zirconia abutment associated with a pressed layer of lithium disilicate with an all-ceramic cemented restoration versus one-piece restoration with the facing porcelain fired and pressed straight to the custom made zirconia abutment. In 29 cases, the restoration consisted of an all-ceramic restoration for cementation (two pieces); in 45 cases the restoration was a screw-retained restoration (one piece). Three all-ceramic restorations broke during the observation time. Two one-piece restorations fractured after 26 months. At follow-up examination there were no significant differences between one-piece and two-piece groups regarding the PI, BI, and MBL. Awaiting studies with longer follow-up times, a careful conclusion is that zirconia anchorages for single-implant restorations seem to demonstrate good short-term technical and biological results.

Abstract:
Minimal dental restoration of occlusal surfaces using sealing for prevention, preserve sound tooth structure. The aim of this study was to clinicaly assess the performance of three different techniques in minimal dental restoration. A total of 90 teeth (premolars or molars) with minimal carious lesions were equally divided into three groups and included in this study. In group I and II teeth were restored either with the composite resin and the resin modified glass ionomer cement. Composite sealant (separately applied) was used in both groups. In group III teeth received resin modified glass ionomer cement. These materials were used at the same time as a restorative and a sealant. Modified Cvar and Ryge criteria were used for clinical evaluation after 1, 2, 3, 6 and 12 months. Complete retention at the end of the evaluation period for I, II and III group was 97%, 93% and 93% respectively. No secondary caries was recorded after the evaluation period. From the obtained results it can be concluded that minimal dental restorations presents an efficient and successful technique in the treatment of small occlusal carious lesions.

Abstract:
In this paper the two analytical models which predict damage, post-earthquake restoration strategies and its period of water supply pipeline network are presented. The detailed model evaluates emergency restoration period of water supply pipeline network using the actual network data and the several restoration strategies that was provided from the experiences of past earthquakes. The simplified model also evaluates restoration period by strategy restoring from the side of distribution reservoir using the 1 km grid data of pipeline length of pipe type and diameter estimated from population data of reference area and water-supply pipeline expansion data. Using actual data of water supply pipeline network of three waterworks bureaus in Japan, we studies the accuracy of grid data of the proposed pipeline length modeling of the simplified model. Finally the efficiency and accuracy of approximate restoration period using the simplified model are confirmed by comparing with the results of two models about damage estimates and restoration periods.

Abstract:
Zirconia (ZrO2) is used to fix restorations as a core material because of its mechanical properties, aesthetics, and compatibility. This study aims to analyze the failure types in ZrO2-based restoration fabricated in a dental laboratory in Misurata, Libya. Data were collected from laboratory records for a 30-day period with follow-up for five months. About 6% of the total restorations had defects with different percentages, 46% of which were fractures, 29% of which had weak bonding between ZrO2frameworks and veneers, 18% of which had cracks, and 7% of which had shade defects. Although ZrO2is a suitable material for dental restorations, defects may occur and lead to the failure of dental restorations. A thorough study is necessary to analyze the cause of failurein zirconia-based restorationsand to improve the properties to produce a versatile dental restorative material.

Full text
Abstract:
This study considers the origin and purpose of Ruth and concludes that it is best to read the narrative as a call for an inclusive attitude toward any person, Jew or Gentile, who desired to join the Judean community in the Restoration period. In chapter one, I review the difficulties that scholars face in ascertaining Ruth's place in Israel's history, and I outline approaches that they have used to try to establish its purpose and origin. I discuss major interpretive positions, which date the book either to the monarchic period, to the exilic period, or to the Restoration period, and I articulate the format of my own study. In chapter two, I consider how the author of Ruth uses characterization to highlight Ruth, a Gentile outsider, and to criticize the Bethlehemite community. Only Boaz accepts Ruth, which leads to his participation in the line of David. In chapter three, I discuss how the author also magnifies Ruth's character by comparing her with Israel's ancestors. In these ways, Ruth demonstrates that an outsider can embody the ideals of the Restoration community and that they can also be a benefit to the nation. In chapters four and five, I examine arguments for dating Ruth to particular periods in Israel's history. In chapter four, I consider efforts to date the language of Ruth as well as the legal practices that the story describes. I also discuss the narrative's supposed congruence with the concerns of various social settings in Israel's history. In chapter five, I draw on current research on refugee communities to see how the experiences of such people can help us understand the concerns of the Restoration community. In chapter six, I review my arguments for regarding Ruth as a call for inclusion in the Restoration period, and I consider how this conclusion should affect the field of Ruth studies as well as the wider field of Second Temple studies.

Abstract:
The second half of the seventeenth century was a period of considerable upheaval in English music, not only because the political instability of the time altered the way musicians were employed, but also because the era saw fundamental changes in the construction and perception of music. The most important of these was a transition between music conceived primarily according to horizontal (imitative) principles and that founded on vertical (tonal) principles, which in turn allowed for vastly expanded formal dimensions. The seventeenth century also witnessed the gradual replacement of the remaining elements of mensural notation and proportional metrical relationships in favour of free tempo with contrasts between duple and triple units, again influencing the way in which works were structured. These elements are examined from the viewpoint of the music theorist, by analysing the thirty-seven treatises which were in circulation in manuscript or printed form during the century. However, the greater part of the dissertation seeks to assess the impact of such profound alterations on the composer himself, through detailed analysis of the music's notation and its development- --in response to the changing styles and techniques; in order to be as certain as possible that such developments were genuine attempts to communicate new attitudes to music and its construction rather than simply the results of mistakes or misunderstandings by copyists, the analysis is restricted to the ninety-four extant autograph manuscripts of composers' own music copied during the period. These primary sources include several previously unidentified sketches and working drafts of pieces which reveal elements of the processes used by composers in the conception of new pieces, as well as finished copies from which has been drawn information on the status of metre, tonality and structure during the period.

Full text
Abstract:
Presented here is a method for automatic punctuation restoration in Swedish using a BERT model. The method is based on KB-BERT, a publicly available, neural network language model pre-trained on a Swedish corpus by National Library of Sweden. This model has then been fine-tuned for this specific task using a corpus of government texts. With a lower-case and unpunctuated Swedish text as input, the model is supposed to return a grammatically correct punctuated copy of the text as output. A successful solution to this problem brings benefits for an array of NLP domains, such as speech-to-text and automated text. Only the punctuation marks period, comma and question marks were considered for the project, due to a lack of data for more rare marks such as semicolon. Additionally, some marks are somewhat interchangeable with the more common, such as exclamation points and periods. Thus, the data set had all exclamation points replaced with periods. The fine-tuned Swedish BERT model, dubbed prestoBERT, achieved an overall F1-score of 78.9. The proposed model scored similarly to international counterparts, with Hungarian and Chinese models obtaining F1-scores of 82.2 and 75.6 respectively. As further comparison, a human evaluation case study was carried out. The human test group achieved an overall F1-score of 81.7, but scored substantially worse than prestoBERT on both period and comma. Inspecting output sentences from the model and humans show satisfactory results, despite the difference in F1-score. The disconnect seems to stem from an unnecessary focus on replicating the exact same punctuation used in the test set, rather than providing any of the number of correct interpretations. If the loss function could be rewritten to reward all grammatically correct outputs, rather than only the one original example, the performance could improve significantly for both prestoBERT and the human group.

Abstract:
As a case study in cultural production and consumption and of the commodification of culture in late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England, this study examines how musicians in London began to emerge from their dependence on the patronage of court, aristocracy and church into a more public sphere, moving from positions as salaried employees to a more freelance existence where they contributed to their income by putting on public commercial concerts. Taking as its starting point the almost 50,000 references to music recorded in the Register of Music in London Newspapers 1660–1750, a database has been built to record detailed information extracted from over 12,000 advertisements, puffs and news items related to commercial concert giving in London between 1660 and 1750. Concert advertisements and other material may thus be studied longitudinally in relation to each other, providing a valuable source of data for the growth of concert giving in London over a long and important period of its development. Public commercial concerts emerged in London in the period following the restoration of Charles II in 1660, developing from private music meetings dominated by amateur performers and informal public performances by professionals in taverns via John Banister's first advertised concerts in 1672. By 1750, public commercial concerts in London may not have achieved their final form or the heights of popularity that accompanied the ‘rage for music' of the 1790s, but they were promoted regularly and with a clear sense of programme planning, laying the foundations for later expansion. The possibility for musicians to make a living as freelance professionals without having to rely solely on patronage, their development of commercial skills, their emerging links with music publishers, all this is witness to the birth of music as a business in London in the period between 1660 and 1750.

Keefer, Chelsea Elizabeth. "Use of Plant Growth Regulators to Expand the Period of Sagebrush Seed Germination and Reduce the Risk of Restoration Failure: Laboratory Trials." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8576.

Abstract:
Seed germination during unhospitable environmental conditions can be a major barrier to direct seeding efforts in dryland systems. In the sagebrush steppe, Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. wyomingensis and Artemisia arbuscula are important shrub species that are being used in restoration, but seeding success is highly sporadic due to inter-annual and intra-seasonal weather variability. Altering and expanding the period of germination, as a form of bet-hedging, may improve plant establishment. Our objective was to determine if we could expand the period of germination using plant growth regulators (PGRs) applied in a conglomerated seed coating treatment. In a laboratory study, the seed was either left untreated, conglomerated separately with two concentrations of a germination inhibitor, abscisic acid (ABA), or with two different germination promoters, gibberellic acid (GA3) and 1-Aminocyclopropane carboxylic acid (ACC), a precursor to ethylene. Seeds were incubated in a loam soil at five constant temperatures (5-25 C) for approximately three months. Results indicate that seed treatments with PGRs can delay or speed germination. The greatest response to the seed treatments was observed at 5 C. For example, at this temperature PGRs delayed the time for 25% of the seeds to germinate by a maximum of 35 and 21 d and decreased this time by 5 and 25 d for A. t. ssp. Wyomingensis and A. arbuscula, respectively. Field studies are needed to determine if the bet-hedging strategy developed in this study will increase the likelihood that some seeds will germinate during periods that are more favorable for plant establishment.

Abstract:
The paper presents the Lithuanian agricultural land users change analysis in almost a century period. The reasons leading to agricultural land users change trends were analysed. The main factors affecting the relationship of land use and the way of the land use are political changes in the country, economic and social aspects have less impact. Therefore, taking into account the political situation in Lithuania of this long analysed period, the agricultural land users change was analysed in three stages, which took place at the time of the conversion of reforms: land use between 1920 and 1940, land use during the Soviet period between 1940 and1990, and land use after the restoration of Lithuania's independence between 1990 and 2014. After the analysis of the land use of these periods land use characteristics of appropriate epochs as well as the land users’ change trends (of the entire period) and their causes are presented in the paper.

Columbu, Stefano, Gian Matteo F. Picchizzolu, and Antonio Cazzani. "The construction materials and static-structural aspects of the Budello tower (Teulada, southwest Sardinia, Italy)." In FORTMED2020 - Defensive Architecture of the Mediterranean. Valencia: Universitat Politàcnica de València, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/fortmed2020.2020.11549.

Full text
Abstract:
The Budello tower is located on a slight promontory from which it dominates the entire bay of Teulada and the towers of Sant’Isidoro, Pixinni, Malfatano and Porto Scudo. The tower, built in 1601 with irregular ashlars of local stones (mainly of magmatic-intrusive origin), has a truncated cone shape, an external diameter of 10,2 m and a height of 11,80 m. Inside it consists of a single room, with a domed vault and a central pillar, equipped with a embrasure, a fireplace, a trap door in the cistern, and a staircase, from which the square of arms was accessed. It was a torre de armas garrisoned by: 1 commander (in 1603), 1 artilleryman and 4 soldiers (1767), 1 artilleryman and 3 soldiers (1801), 1 artilleryman and 4 soldiers (1812). Although it underwent several restorations, documented as early as the years 1617-1619, the tower remained generally in good condition until the period 1763-1784, in which new restoration works were carried out including the closure of the parade ground with a classic parapet with gunboats and battlements. Other restoration works are carried out in 1808, 1819 and 1840. The tower remained in operation until 1843. Like all the other coastal fortifications, it was then definitively demilitarized with the Regio Decreto of 25 April 1867. Specific objectives of the research are the petrographic and physical-mechanical analysis of the stones and ancient mortars used in the construction of the tower, the structural analysis of the building and related geometric-constructive characteristics. The final intention is to understand the decay processes taking place on the tower both in terms of materials and static-structural aspects, and to envisage possible restoration interventions to be implemented aimed at its conservation.

Abstract:
The ribat in Bouna (present day Annaba), also called the Fusula Ribat, dominates the promontory of the hill with the same name and overlooks the port of the town. This defensive structure, whose typology dates from the Fatimid period, belonged to a chain of ribats marking Islamic territory along the length of the Mediterranean coast. It was concealed under the Sidi Boumerouane Mosque. Thus, through a series of transformations, the site became a veritable military-religious complex. The recent process of patrimonialization, as well as the restoration project at the complex, has revealed the structure of the ribat, leaning against the wall and essentially forming the foundations of the first mosque of the town. The aim of this article is, on the one hand, to bring new knowledge, as much technical as historical, about this fortified structure, which has largely been ignored by historical research until now, and on the other, to carry out the restoration project of this edifice, which has now been classed as national heritage.

Abstract:
The following paper describes the work originated from a University exercise drill, made during the Restoration Lab of the architecture Department of the Università degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. It shows the results of a relief and metric characterisation campaign of the ‘Masseria del Gigante' (Giant’s Farmhouse) Temple, in Cumae, in the Naples province. This is a rural building from the XVIII century, built and extended by incorporating the rests of the cell of an ancient temple from the Flavian Age, located at the eastern border of Cumae lower city’s Foro, that was called “del Gigante” (of the Giant), because a large Jupiter’s bust was found in its proximities. Well known in the world of antiquarian dealers, it was pictured in many drawings and landscape paintings since the end of the XVII century and the first half of the XVIII, the Masseria Temple taken into exam has been acquired by the public domain only at the end of the 1990, so only after this period the first archaeological investigations were made. Afterwards, between 1996 and 2002, conspicuous restoration and securing works were made. Today the structure is used as a temporary deposit for archaeological findings and it’s among the buildings included in a wider restoration and re-functionalization project that has been proposed by the Campi Flegrei Archaeological Park and that is now about to start. The following research was developed from the structure’s relief made with photo-modelling techniques and it aimed to identify the construction methodologies and the degrading phenomena in place, with special regards to the identification of the ancient parts of the Temple, of those pertaining the conversion in a farmhouse and, lastly,, those realised during the aforementioned restoration works.

Abstract:
The Graeco-Roman theatre of Catania stands in the heart of the historic centre, on the south-eastern slopes of the hill of Montevergine. The building visible today was built during the Julio-Claudian period as part of a programme that saw the rebuilding of the monument, which probably used structures and materials from the earlier Greek theatre. The work undertaken over more than fifty years, involving expropriation, demolition, excavation, and restoration, has, on the whole, made it possible to bring to light the surviving parts of the theatre, improving the comprehension of this monument, despite the fact that some sectors have been irreparably compromised.

Status of perennial tree germplasm resources in India and their utilization in the context of global genome sequencing efforts. World Agroforestry, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.5716/wp20050.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:
Tree species are characterized by their perennial growth habit, woody morphology, long juvenile period phase, mostly outcrossing behaviour, highly heterozygosity genetic makeup, and relatively high genetic diversity. The economically important trees have been an integral part of the human life system due to their provision of timber, fruit, fodder, and medicinal and/or health benefits. Despite its widespread application in agriculture, industrial and medicinal values, the molecular aspects of key economic traits of many tree species remain largely unexplored. Over the past two decades, research on forest tree genomics has generally lagged behind that of other agronomic crops. Genomic research on trees is motivated by the need to support genetic improvement programmes mostly for food trees and timber, and develop diagnostic tools to assist in recommendation for optimum conservation, restoration and management of natural populations. Research on long-lived woody perennials is extending our molecular knowledge and understanding of complex life histories and adaptations to the environment, enriching a field that has traditionally drawn its biological inference from a few short-lived herbaceous species. These concerns have fostered research aimed at deciphering the genomic basis of complex traits that are related to the adaptive value of trees. This review summarizes the highlights of tree genomics and offers some priorities for accelerating progress in the next decade.

Veland, Siri, and Christine Merk. Lay person perceptions of marine carbon dioxide removal (CDR) – Working paper. OceanNETs, July 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.3289/oceannets_d3.3.

Full text
Abstract:
This working paper presents first insights on lay public perceptions of marine carbon dioxide removal (CDR) approaches. In seven focus groups, three in Germany and four in Norway (including one pilot) the researchers asked members of the lay public to share their views of the ocean and the effects of climate change, four CDR approaches, as well as their reflections on responsible research and innovation (RRI) of marine CDR. The four CDR methods were ocean iron fertilization, ocean alkalinity enhancement, artificial upwelling, and blue carbon management through restoration of coastal and marine ecosystems. In addition, respondents were asked to compare the four approaches. Our findings indicate that the public will be very supportive of blue carbon management irrespective of its actual carbon sequestration potential, due in part to the perceived bad state of marine ecosystems worldwide. Participants were skeptical whether any of the CDR approaches could have relevant effect on carbon sequestration and long-term storage; they reasoned about issues such as the ability to scale up treatments in time and space, unforeseen or unforeseeable effects on ecosystems in time and space, and the role of industry in the implementation process. They argued that despite the potential availability of marine CDR, industry and the general public should stop polluting behaviors and practices. Nevertheless, the participants universally agreed that further research on all four CDR methods should be pursued to better understand effects on climate, ecosystems, local communities, and the economy.
