Jones, Edward Allen. "Reading 'Ruth' in the Restoration period : a call for inclusion." Thesis, University of St Andrews, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10023/3061.

Abstract:
This study considers the origin and purpose of Ruth and concludes that it is best to read the narrative as a call for an inclusive attitude toward any person, Jew or Gentile, who desired to join the Judean community in the Restoration period. In chapter one, I review the difficulties that scholars face in ascertaining Ruth's place in Israel's history, and I outline approaches that they have used to try to establish its purpose and origin. I discuss major interpretive positions, which date the book either to the monarchic period, to the exilic period, or to the Restoration period, and I articulate the format of my own study. In chapter two, I consider how the author of Ruth uses characterization to highlight Ruth, a Gentile outsider, and to criticize the Bethlehemite community. Only Boaz accepts Ruth, which leads to his participation in the line of David. In chapter three, I discuss how the author also magnifies Ruth's character by comparing her with Israel's ancestors. In these ways, Ruth demonstrates that an outsider can embody the ideals of the Restoration community and that they can also be a benefit to the nation. In chapters four and five, I examine arguments for dating Ruth to particular periods in Israel's history. In chapter four, I consider efforts to date the language of Ruth as well as the legal practices that the story describes. I also discuss the narrative's supposed congruence with the concerns of various social settings in Israel's history. In chapter five, I draw on current research on refugee communities to see how the experiences of such people can help us understand the concerns of the Restoration community. In chapter six, I review my arguments for regarding Ruth as a call for inclusion in the Restoration period, and I consider how this conclusion should affect the field of Ruth studies as well as the wider field of Second Temple studies.

Abstract:
The second half of the seventeenth century was a period of considerable upheaval in English music, not only because the political instability of the time altered the way musicians were employed, but also because the era saw fundamental changes in the construction and perception of music. The most important of these was a transition between music conceived primarily according to horizontal (imitative) principles and that founded on vertical (tonal) principles, which in turn allowed for vastly expanded formal dimensions. The seventeenth century also witnessed the gradual replacement of the remaining elements of mensural notation and proportional metrical relationships in favour of free tempo with contrasts between duple and triple units, again influencing the way in which works were structured. These elements are examined from the viewpoint of the music theorist, by analysing the thirty-seven treatises which were in circulation in manuscript or printed form during the century. However, the greater part of the dissertation seeks to assess the impact of such profound alterations on the composer himself, through detailed analysis of the music's notation and its development- --in response to the changing styles and techniques; in order to be as certain as possible that such developments were genuine attempts to communicate new attitudes to music and its construction rather than simply the results of mistakes or misunderstandings by copyists, the analysis is restricted to the ninety-four extant autograph manuscripts of composers' own music copied during the period. These primary sources include several previously unidentified sketches and working drafts of pieces which reveal elements of the processes used by composers in the conception of new pieces, as well as finished copies from which has been drawn information on the status of metre, tonality and structure during the period.

Björkman, Nilsson John. "Period Drama : Punctuation restoration in Swedish through fine- tuned KB-BERT." Thesis, KTH, Skolan för elektroteknik och datavetenskap (EECS), 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-303127.

Abstract:
Presented here is a method for automatic punctuation restoration in Swedish using a BERT model. The method is based on KB-BERT, a publicly available, neural network language model pre-trained on a Swedish corpus by National Library of Sweden. This model has then been fine-tuned for this specific task using a corpus of government texts. With a lower-case and unpunctuated Swedish text as input, the model is supposed to return a grammatically correct punctuated copy of the text as output. A successful solution to this problem brings benefits for an array of NLP domains, such as speech-to-text and automated text. Only the punctuation marks period, comma and question marks were considered for the project, due to a lack of data for more rare marks such as semicolon. Additionally, some marks are somewhat interchangeable with the more common, such as exclamation points and periods. Thus, the data set had all exclamation points replaced with periods. The fine-tuned Swedish BERT model, dubbed prestoBERT, achieved an overall F1-score of 78.9. The proposed model scored similarly to international counterparts, with Hungarian and Chinese models obtaining F1-scores of 82.2 and 75.6 respectively. As further comparison, a human evaluation case study was carried out. The human test group achieved an overall F1-score of 81.7, but scored substantially worse than prestoBERT on both period and comma. Inspecting output sentences from the model and humans show satisfactory results, despite the difference in F1-score. The disconnect seems to stem from an unnecessary focus on replicating the exact same punctuation used in the test set, rather than providing any of the number of correct interpretations. If the loss function could be rewritten to reward all grammatically correct outputs, rather than only the one original example, the performance could improve significantly for both prestoBERT and the human group.

Abstract:
As a case study in cultural production and consumption and of the commodification of culture in late seventeenth- and eighteenth-century England, this study examines how musicians in London began to emerge from their dependence on the patronage of court, aristocracy and church into a more public sphere, moving from positions as salaried employees to a more freelance existence where they contributed to their income by putting on public commercial concerts. Taking as its starting point the almost 50,000 references to music recorded in the Register of Music in London Newspapers 1660–1750, a database has been built to record detailed information extracted from over 12,000 advertisements, puffs and news items related to commercial concert giving in London between 1660 and 1750. Concert advertisements and other material may thus be studied longitudinally in relation to each other, providing a valuable source of data for the growth of concert giving in London over a long and important period of its development. Public commercial concerts emerged in London in the period following the restoration of Charles II in 1660, developing from private music meetings dominated by amateur performers and informal public performances by professionals in taverns via John Banister's first advertised concerts in 1672. By 1750, public commercial concerts in London may not have achieved their final form or the heights of popularity that accompanied the ‘rage for music' of the 1790s, but they were promoted regularly and with a clear sense of programme planning, laying the foundations for later expansion. The possibility for musicians to make a living as freelance professionals without having to rely solely on patronage, their development of commercial skills, their emerging links with music publishers, all this is witness to the birth of music as a business in London in the period between 1660 and 1750.

Keefer, Chelsea Elizabeth. "Use of Plant Growth Regulators to Expand the Period of Sagebrush Seed Germination and Reduce the Risk of Restoration Failure: Laboratory Trials." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2019. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/8576.

Abstract:
Seed germination during unhospitable environmental conditions can be a major barrier to direct seeding efforts in dryland systems. In the sagebrush steppe, Artemisia tridentata Nutt. ssp. wyomingensis and Artemisia arbuscula are important shrub species that are being used in restoration, but seeding success is highly sporadic due to inter-annual and intra-seasonal weather variability. Altering and expanding the period of germination, as a form of bet-hedging, may improve plant establishment. Our objective was to determine if we could expand the period of germination using plant growth regulators (PGRs) applied in a conglomerated seed coating treatment. In a laboratory study, the seed was either left untreated, conglomerated separately with two concentrations of a germination inhibitor, abscisic acid (ABA), or with two different germination promoters, gibberellic acid (GA3) and 1-Aminocyclopropane carboxylic acid (ACC), a precursor to ethylene. Seeds were incubated in a loam soil at five constant temperatures (5-25 C) for approximately three months. Results indicate that seed treatments with PGRs can delay or speed germination. The greatest response to the seed treatments was observed at 5 C. For example, at this temperature PGRs delayed the time for 25% of the seeds to germinate by a maximum of 35 and 21 d and decreased this time by 5 and 25 d for A. t. ssp. Wyomingensis and A. arbuscula, respectively. Field studies are needed to determine if the bet-hedging strategy developed in this study will increase the likelihood that some seeds will germinate during periods that are more favorable for plant establishment.

Based on the history of science, this research aimed to discover the materials used as pigment and the specificities of colonial Brazilian artistic production through literature related to decorative arts of the period. To achieve some of those materials we‟ve referred the treatises on painting of the italians Cennino Cennini‟s Trattato della Pittura (c. 1398) and Giorgio Vasari‟s Le Vite de più eccelenti architetti, pittori, et scultori italiani, da Cimabue, insino a tempi nostril (1550); of the portugueses Filipe Nunes‟s Arte da Pintura, Symetria e Perspectiva (1615); as well as the dictionary of terms of Rafael Bluteau‟s Vocabulario Portuguez e Latino (1712) and the text Segredos necessarios para os officios, artes e manufacturas, e para muitos objectos sobre a economia domestica (1794). We also observed artistic knowledge present in some of the books published by the Casa Literária do Arco do Cego and partner publishers (1799 to 1801). Several elements to the composition of this research came from contemporary studies in the areas of architecture and conservation restoration related to Jesuit constructions of art and colonial painting and scientific analyses of these materials

Abstract:
Tillage erosion is the dominant soil erosion process in hummocky landscapes. The topsoil lost from the convex upper slope positions (i.e., hilltops knolls, ridges) gradually makes its way to the concave lower slope positions (i.e., foot slopes, toe slopes/depressions), while reducing yield capability in the knolls. The accumulation of topsoil in the concave lower slope positions does not increase yield potential. Landscape restoration is a process by which organic-rich topsoil is removed from lower slope positions and is moved to the knoll positions where it is applied and incorporated as additional topsoil. Field studies on this matter have shown increases in crop yield productivity due to land restoration on the convex upper slope positions. Using a model developed in STELLA ®, this research examines the net monetary benefit of landscape restoration in specific landscape scenarios modeled after areas in Manitoba which are prone to tillage erosion. This study demonstrates that farming operations in hummocky landscapes, experiencing topsoil loss at knolls benefit from landscape restoration as it can lead to positive net returns. In this study, the research shows that landscape restoration, in the Rural Municipality of Lorne (South Western Manitoba), led to revenues greater than restoration costs for arable land used for agricultural purposes. Depending on soil conditions and tillage choices the payback period for landscape restoration ranged from 8 to 18 years.

The county of Japan implemented a nationwide process of modernization after the Tokugawa Shogun lost the ruling of government to the Emperor Meiji. During this seventy-year period of radical reform, Japan modernized into a strong industrial nation. This occurred while the sovereign state was exposed to new technologies and cultural influences from the dominant western powers of the day. This thesis presents a macro analysis framework for the organizational transformation during the Japanese Meiji Restoration period. The concepts used to model changes from the target period of Japan’s opening to the world include conventional organization change theories, such as: Lewin’s Unfreeze, Change and Refreeze, and Kotter’s Eight Steps. Complex change system theories are also used for modelling this change progress, which include: Bifurcation and Cusp Catastrophe. This thesis puts the point forward that complex change system theories can be used to gain some insight of possible outcomes of a specified event. This can be achieved by recognizing, analyzing and influencing the self-organizing process at certain stages of implementation.

The construction techniques of stucco washing finish was imported by Japanese and used up to now. The traditional workmanship is improved with the process of teaching and imitation. Besides, the techniques of workers are different with the location and construction styles. Meanwhile, the workmanship is on the decline from popular to fade. Therefore, it’s the most discussed Issue in the cases of restoration of historic sites and buildings. Inside those cases of reutilization in Taiwan, many historic sites and buildings were built in Japanese rule period. Furthermore, most construction external walls of these are stucco washing finish. After a progress of transition of time, space and different using pattern, the materiel is deteriorated and should be restored and preserved to the primary mode. According to this, the thesis studies on the factor of stucco washing finish deterioration and restoration techniques. Use the buildings built in Japanese rule period in Taiwan to be our objects. Due to the less data of materiel deterioration and restoration techniques on the construction external walls with stucco washing finish of historic sites and buildings, it’s important to establish the database. The study emphasizes on the investigation of deterioration before restoration and the use of factual restoration techniques to establish restoration procedure and deterioration grade. Furthermore, propose restoration countermeasure and technical specifications to smooth restoration of the construction external walls with stucco washing finish and make the buildings be restored and preserved to the primary mode to attain the cultural and historic value. The contents include these items following: (1) An introduction of stucco washing finish and a study of deterioration factor. Studying the deterioration factor by realizing the construction techniques of stucco washing finish and deterioration cases to propose deterioration countermeasure. (2) Restoration techniques and engineering of stucco washing finish. By investigation of deterioration and restoration case study, we know there are two restoration types of construction external walls with stucco washing finish. One type is cleaning supplementary lacquer. The other type is imitating and restoring. Studying restoration techniques of stucco washing finish, fix restoration procedure and analyze the skills. Generalize the contents and flow of experiment by case study. (3) Propose restoration factor and technical specifications of stucco washing finish. Try to establish restoration procedure system and propose deterioration evaluation grade. Propose restoration method and restoration technical specifications across the important things such as deterioration question, maintaining, restoration method and technique. This thesis intends to benefit the factual engineering of the preservation of historic sites and buildings and build database for restoration.

In the recent year, the protection of culture resource is important to the development of local area. Due to the serious earthquake in the central part of Taiwan caused serious damage on the people’s property on September 21 1999, and it also caused some damage on the protection of culture resource. This theory researches the problems of the protection of the culture resource. The Rice Milling Building of Shihkang is one of a historic agriculture building which is established in 1941. The characteristic appearance of this building is covering with Siding Due to this building didn''t collapse in the serious earthquake in 921.So people pay attention to it again even if it ever faced to be destroyed due to the agricultural technique were growing up. The main structure of this rice milling building has two components; One is wooden structure with Japanese style, and the other is combining with brick structure and wooden structure. This rice milling building with Japanese style is the only one which is conserved completely in center area of Taiwan. The major structure doesn’t collapse in many times of the earthquake within fifty years. This building shows that it might have special design inside. This research has three components which mainly discuss about the methods of restoration for this kinds of construction:1.The history of the Rice Milling Building of Shihkang 2. The style of wooden structure 3. How the damage of this building is and restoration methods 4. Research of the restoration methods which classified by materials 、working methods and the distribution of the materials.

Abstract:
The Reflection of the Exclusion Crisis (1678-1683) in Contemporary Literature Kristýna Hoblová abstract This work of literary history analyses the reflection of the Exclusion Crisis (1678-1683) in contemporary literature across genres. It is based on the theory of the rise of the public sphere by Jürgen Habermas and on the theory of Michael McKeon, understanding the ideology of the late Stuarts as a last remnant of aristocratic ideology. The Exclusion Crisis is presented here as a period of unsettling negotiations between the declining Stuart ethos and the Whig ideology of the rising mercantile classes. The interpretation of chosen texts serves to discover creative transformations of the political discourse of the newly emerging political parties of Whigs and Tories, stressing the negotiations between genres, individual authors and political ideologies. The first chapter offers a brief overview of the socio-historical context, Habermas's theory of the rise of the public sphere and Michael McKeon's conception of aristocratic ideology. It also introduces the Tory political theory defending the Stuart divine right of kings on the basis of Robert Filmer's patriarchal household-state analogy and the Whig defence against absolutist tendencies of the Stuarts through asserting the priority of Law over the Royal...
