Abstract:
In today's highly competitive, global market place the pressure on organizations to find new ways to create and deliver value to customers grows ever strong. At the same time, market maturity combined with new sources of global competition has led to over-capacity in many industries leading to an inevitable pressure on price. Managers are increasingly interested in actively managing their supply chains because of environmental changes. The study is aimed to identify the importance of effective supply chain management and call out the awareness on the supply chain management in the clothing retail business. The main objective of the study is to provide a h e w o r k for effective supply chain management in the retail clothing business and give some recommendations on how to achieve effective supply chain management. Supply chain management plays an important role on the competitive relativities in achieving success in the market place. The focus of supply chain management is upon the management of relationships in order to achieve a more profitable outcome for all parties in the chain. The framework of effective supply chain management can be described as a network of production under the economic and market environment which processing with the characteristics as purchasing, distribution, customer, and demand to purchase again. Each part of the operation in the model provides the positive effects to the others under the whole supply chain management to avoid the uncertainty and improve the competitive advantage. Information technology can be used to facilitate the company to achieve effective supply chain management. The empirical study provided a clearer vision on the supply chain management from the practical aspect. The survey greatly confirmed importance and significant effects of supply chain management in the retail clothing business.

Oppong, George. "The role of strategic supply chain management in liquor retail." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2009. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/895.

Full text
Abstract:
The underlying objective of this research was to assess the extent to which an efficient supply chain can help retail businesses; particularly liquor businesses to manage their business risks. The case study firm for the research was Big Daddy’s Group, one of the leading independent liquor distribution and retailing firms in South Africa. In order to achieve the objective of the research, a review of relevant literature was done. It began with literature review of retailing in general, highlighting on the major roles they play and the modern trends in the industry. Afterwards the literature was narrowed down to liquor retailing. This was done to ascertain the unique characteristics of that aspect of retailing including the regulations guiding the industry and the specific business risks in that business. The final part of the literature review was on specific concepts and management models such as value chain, supply chain as well as business risk and its management. The literature highlighted the means by which the retailer creates value for the customer and the inherent risks in the industry. There was the indication of supply chain being a key component of the value creating activities (value chain) of the business, and serving as a tool in mitigating possible risks. The literature provided the theoretical proposition (hypothesis) for the assessment of the case study findings from the Big Daddy’s Group. The data collection exercise was done by means of a questionnaire complimented by personal interview. Due to the nature of the firm, in terms of structure and operations, two persons, with considerable insight into the business, the director and the sales/area manager were interviewed for the exercise. The questions posed were categorised into seven key areas of retail operations such as product range, imports, customer awareness, marketing and advertising, supply chain and human resource. The findings were compared with the theoretical propositions developed in the literature review, and the pattern matching logic technique was used to determine the existence or not of any similar predictions or differences. The risks identified in the findings were analysed with the logic of an efficient supply chain as the mitigating tool. The conclusion was that supply chain management is key to the value creation activities and hence the survival of the business. The recommendation therefore is that the retailer should ensure the efficient management of the supply chain network since it has the potential to reduce the inherent risks in their operations.

Lee, Daton. "Supply chain relationships in apparel retail product development." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2002. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc3131/.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to investigate supply chain relationships within the apparel retail product development process under a single site case study setting. Relationship determinants (i.e. drivers, facilitators and barriers) that facilitated or impeded the degree of collaborative efforts between the retailer and the supply chain members were identified. As the retailer integrated its product development process with its suppliers, a triangular relationship was formed between the retailer, the overseas manufacturers, and the designated suppliers. The study found that the retailer sought operational efficiency in its business relationships with supply chain members, but continued to seek long-term commitment in these relationships to establish a virtual vertical company.

The number of natural hazards has been increasing over the last 10 years. Understanding the impact of natural hazards on retail networks is crucial to make effective planning against disruptions. We used daily sales and inventory data from a country-wide retail network and natural emergencies historic data to quantify the consequences triggered by these events in product and financial flows. We analyze sales and inventory flow through points of sale and distribution centers. We propose the Resilience Investment Model (RIM) to invest in resilience against the effects of natural hazards. This model takes into account the operational details of the organization. RIM is a two-stage multi-period inventory flow stochastic program. The resilience investments consist in acquiring additional inventory to buffer against disruptions and the use of real options contracts with suppliers to execute when a declared emergency happens. We use a set of risk profiles over the future costs to align the investment with the financials and preferences of the organization. This research shows how the risk profiles of the decision maker shape the location and distribution of backup stock in a retail network. We show that risk averse profiles reduce worst-case cost by 15% while increasing average cost by 2%. We recommend the use of risk profiles with cost targets to quantify the Value at Risk of the network due to natural hazards.

Abstract:
Postponement as a tool of creating flexibility is not a new concept. It traces back in literature to the 1950’s but was mainly argued as a method useful for manufacturing. However, postponement could potentially be used in all different parts of an organization to delay certain activities, and thereby create flexibility, which is crucial in today’s volatile marketplace. Customers are requiring customized products, yet they are not willing to pay premium for processes involved. Also, competition is increasing, as retailers around the globe compete with each other due to internet and improved information systems. This study focuses on a retailer’s perspective in the supply chain, as previous studies mainly discuss manufacturers, and their different abilities of achieving flexibility. Supply chain management as a concept are discussed, which is described as an integrative approach to dealing with the planning and control of the materials flow from suppliers to end users. This will further be “extended” to demand chain management, where focus lies at customers’ demand and puts emphasis on the needs of the marketplace and identifies the roles and tasks to be designed in the supply chain to satisfy these needs, instead of starting with the supplier/manufacturer and working forward. This is closely connected to flexibility, and postponement as a tool to achieve this. Flexibility as such, is described as the ability to change, or adapt to customer demand. This study aims to explore the Swedish retailing business, and their use of postponement strategies. A quantitative study has been made to be able to create a general picture of their use of this tool, as well as their prerequisite for adopting this tool. This study shows that retailing in general do have adopted strategies for customizations except non-specialized stores where answers to a wide extent differed regarding their use of flexibility. However, these strategies mainly regard packaging, and/or basic customizations. Depending on the market certain retailers are active within; postponement is used in various extents. Expensive products, or customers requiring big quantities of products, are able to get these customized. Money is almost always the main concern in these adaptations. Some factors that have been studied, that were enablers of flexibility and postponement strategies, were not able to be analyzed as very low results were calculated. However, the main-factors: flexibility and postponement were able to be analyzed in detail, as well as discussions regarding the inconclusive data gathered.

Perishability presents a challenging problem in inventory management for the fresh produce industry since it can lead to higher inventory costs and lower service levels. If a supply chain has multiple echelons, that further complicates the issue since companies have an added risk of not having the right amount of product at the right location at the right time. We conduct our research on Chiquita's Fresh Express supply chain. We analyze the impact of perishability on total relevant costs. Our research focuses on determining the optimal inventory policy for the system considering inventory holding costs, shrinkage costs, lost sales costs, forecast accuracy and service levels. We test the sensitivity of the system with respect to forecast errors and the transportation lead time. We developed a discrete-event simulation model using Arena software to conduct the research. Our research demonstrates that by lowering the current target on-hand inventory levels at the distribution center and retail stores, inventory holding costs and shrinkage costs are reduced significantly. Under the optimal inventory policy, the system can save 31% in costs, improve the item fill rate at the distribution center, reduce the total shrinkage volume, and maintain high service levels of more than 95% at the retail stores. Our sensitivity analysis shows that the system is very sensitive to the forecast errors. Additionally, we recommend keeping the transportation lead time as low as possible to maximize the products' lifetime at the retail stores. Reducing the forecast errors or the transportation lead time would reduce the total relevant cost of the system while improving the item fill rates across the supply chain.

Arthur, Sherman M. "Sustainable Supply Chain: Maintaining a Competitive Advantage in Retail Organizations." ScholarWorks, 2017. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/4123.

Full text
Abstract:
Some retail managers encounter challenges with efficiency and responsiveness in their attempts to gain and maintain a competitive advantage in the retail industry. Many retail managers are receptive to changes in global markets, technology, and customer demands. The purpose of this qualitative single case study was to explore the strategies that some retail managers used to motivate their sales associates to maintain a competitive advantage in the retail industry. Maintaining a competitive advantage increases profitability and customer satisfaction. Sustainable Supply Chain Management was the primary conceptual framework for this study. The purposive sample consisted of 4 retail managers from a mid-sized retail distribution organization in southeastern Georgia. Face-to-face interviews were recorded, transcribed, verified, and analyzed. Analysis in this qualitative single case study was based on the sustainable supply chain management framework. Four emergent themes were identified relating to essential strategies, ethical factors, risk factors, and the value of sustainable strategy toward stakeholders, suppliers, and customers. Implications for positive social change include retail managers’ improved ability to motivate their sales associates to maintain a competitive advantage, which will allow organizations to sustain their progress in the community and thereby contribute to the success and wellbeing of employees, families, communities, and the economy. Motivated and qualified employees tend to remain with their organizations, which is good for employees and their families, as well as the business, the community, and the economy.

As most companies in the consumer products space develop operational capabilities to produce and distribute high-quality low-cost products, leading firms in the industry continuously seek new ways to increase profitability and provide value to their retail partners and end consumers. While firms such as Procter & Gamble (P&G) have developed lean and flexible supply chains, this innovation has not had significant impact on the actual sale of product to the customer in individual stores. Analysis shows that large differences in the level of consumer demand for specific products exist across retail chains. However, current practices typically treat all stores across a chain the same. This thesis presents methods to target store-level marketing levers, including product mix, promotions, pricing, distribution and inventory management levels, based on shopper demographics and past purchasing behavior. Specifically, a framework to divide large retail chains into smaller "virtual chains" and subsequently develop targeted micro-marketing strategies for these virtual chains is presented. Research for this thesis was conducted during a six and a half month internship with P&G's Product Supply group at the Cosmetics division in Hunt Valley Maryland. The internship was affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's Leaders for Manufacturing Program.

Scudder, Crescent. "South Africa's cotton supply chain from farm to retail| Applying the triple top line to sustainable apparel supply chains." Thesis, University of Delaware, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1567825.

Abstract:

Growing concerns over the environmental and social impacts related to the production of clothing and textiles have created a need for more discussion about supply chain practices. Currently, there are no guidelines or strategies for addressing sustainable supply chains in the apparel industry that minimize environmental impacts and uphold socially responsible practices. This exploratory case study traces an apparel supply chain, with a focus on cotton, in South Africa that is under a development strategy to create a sustainable supply chain from farm to retail. In-depth interviews were conducted across the supply chain, including cotton farmers, cotton gins, a cotton yarn manufacturer, a textile mill, an apparel manufacturer, and a retailer. The purpose of the study was to gain an understanding of the business decisions at each node of the supply chain that influence the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainability by applying the triple top line model (McDonough & Braungart, 2002). This study identifies strengths and weaknesses in sustainable practices that adhere to the triple top line model within each node of the supply chain. Results found economic factors were drivers for good social and environmental practices, with the latter being the smallest segment of the three. The study makes recommendations for improving practices at each node of the supply chain and recommendations for strategies for developing sustainable apparel supply chains.

Bowen, Craig Andrew. "The effect of mass retail buying practises on competitiveness in the retail value chain." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/29396.

Full text
Abstract:
Historically, South African manufacturers and suppliers to the mass retail environment have been compelled to manage significant business risks as a result of the generic buying strategies employed by the mass retailing format. More recently, best practice initiatives such as SCOR’s collaborative planning, forecasting and replenishment have risen to the fore of supply chain management as ways to mitigate the undesired effects of theses generic buying practices for all participants in the value chain.Traditional thinking centred on optimising only the merchandise activities and function, through cost based performance measures, have caused a number of undesired effects and invalid assumptions. These factors in turn have impacted the competitiveness and sustainability of manufacturers and suppliers as well as the supply chain ecosystem as a whole. Systemic theory suggests that in order to identify these conflicting and invalid assumptions one must approach the problem through sufficiency based thinking processes that communicate the core conflict and map out possible solutions for managers. Data for this study was collected based on the widely accepted best practice framework of supply chain management for the mass retail environment. With this in mind, this research aims to provide an academic foundation for deeper collaboration between mass retailers and their vendors, as well as an understanding of the practical implications of decisions for managers and executives, on both the mass retail, and manufacturing and supply sides of the value chain. While statistical variation is a reality in the retailing environment, the mass retailing format and its supply chain partners are particularly susceptible to the negative effects of ‘bullwhip’ due to the large scale of promotional activities undertaken. Much of this problem can be mitigated through collaboration on a meaningful bases that allows not only for responsiveness for supply chain partners but greater profitability for all participant in the value chain. It is argued that an improvement in throughput will have a positive impact on the competitiveness and sustainability of the local supply and manufacturing organisations in South Africa.

Inventory is the largest asset on Nike's balance sheet-$3.9 Billion on May 3 1 st, 2014-and a key indicator of supply chain health. With new markets, products, and channels being added to Nike's sales portfolio each year, the environment in which Nike's supply chain must operate is becoming increasingly complex. Nike has responded to this complexity by splintering their supply chain into smaller segments, tailoring each segment to specific market and consumer needs. As a result of these market developments and Nike's organizational response, the task of understanding and predicting inventory movements has become increasingly challenging for Nike's business planning teams. This project creates an analytical method by which Nike can combine historical supply chain performance with sales forecasts to accurately predict future changes to company inventory levels. To achieve this goal and facilitate simple and flexible inventory predictions, a model was developed around the key segmentation dimensions that define Nike's supply chain. Use of this model enables Nike's senior management team to accurately predict movements in inventory due to product mix changes in the baseline sales forecasts. Additionally, the model provides Nike with a mechanism to evaluate sensitivity to forecast errors and the inventory costs associated with key strategic decisions to grow or shrink segments of their business. Preliminary results from the model over the time period FY15 - FY18 show a 2% increase in baseline inventory by the end of FY18 due both to growth in Apparel relative to Footwear and to growth in Direct-to-Consumer relative to Wholesale. This upward pressure on inventory leaves Nike in a precarious spot with Wall Street analysts who associate inventory growth relative to sales with poor marketplace performance. By carefully segmenting inventory, applying segment specific forecasts, and analyzing aggregated results through the use of the model, Nike can more accurately predict and explain movements in inventory to shareholders.

Abstract:
Problem: While global IT competition is becoming increasingly severe, various business organizations and companies, in order to maximize the profit and gain market competitiveness, are in urgent need of high-performance workflow systems to improve efficiency. However, the workflow systems that are currently used are embedded with fixed business rules that cannot be easily adjusted by users, resulting in the inability of users to make adjustments to the business rules, so as to satisfy changed requirements and deal with high cost of business management and low efficiency. Therefore, it is highly desirable for users of workflow systems, especially retail supply chain companies, to employ a new type of systems that can be easily adjusted by end users themselves when required.Solution: The rule-based workflow system architecture for the management of retail supply chain business process is recommended. In such architecture, the business rules can be separated from the system logic and managed by users via a friendly interface. The rule-based workflow systems can greatly enhance the system efficiency and lower maintenance cost, as compared with the traditional workflow system or other similar information systems. And the efficiency of retail supply chain business process management can be greatly enhanced by employing rule-based workflow systems. Methods: Two main research problems and four sub-research problems, which serve as the guidance to conduct related research work, have been identified. The research work has been divided into the theoretical part and the empirical part. In the theoretical part, the theory of rule base establishment and rule-based workflow system architecture are discussed. In the empirical part, data analysis as well as prototype design are conducted by employing both quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection. Attempts are also made to verify the theories suggested in the theoretical part by means of empirical research. Based on both theoretical and empirical research, attempts are made to find solutions to the research questions. In general, this thesis arms at providing references for the future research related to rule-based workflow system management in retail supply chain management. The thesis also aims to provide references for the practical use of rule-based systems in the retail supply chain field with such issues as system development and maintenance, especially for the system of complex and changeable business processes. Most importantly, some solutions are offered to the challenges of retail supply chain management.

Colesky, Yolanda. "Investigating sustainable supply chain practices within the luxury brand market." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/14917.

Full text
Abstract:
Luxury fashion brands seem to contradict sustainability. The values of sustainability are commonly associated with terms such as sharing, collaboration, austerity, and collective thinking. Luxury, however, is associated with excess, self-indulgence, delight and decadence (Kapferer & Bastien, 2012:360). Further paradoxes exist where the apparel of the luxury consumer is often manufactured by labourers in low wage-paying producing countries. High wastage is evident in the seasonality of the fashion industry. However, work opportunities are created by the fickleness of the fashion industry and the constant need to own the most current designs (Black, 2012:8). Owing to the high visibility of luxury fashion and the contractions between one -- on the one hand -- supplying income to families by way of employment and -- on the other hand -- not complying to sustainable international human resource practices, fashion brands are the focus of many non-governmental organisations (NGOs) that use the mass media to expose any social wrongdoing in the industry. Luxury fashion brands are constantly in the spotlight, as highlighted in articles posted by the Clean Clothes campaign, a custodian for employees in the global garment industries; Greenpeace; and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). An example of such practices was when Greenpeace reported in 2009 that shoe brands such as Timberland and Clarks were manufactured from leather sourced from the hides of cattle in illegally deforested areas in Brazil. This provided negative publicity for these luxury shoe brands as well as for the Brazilian government that was financing this project (Vurro, Russo & Perrini, 2009:609). The luxury fashion brand industry, as well as the consumers of luxury fashion labels, are accused -- often only for the sake of sensationalism -- of living in the lap of luxury whilst maintaining a supply chain that is riddled with unsustainable practices. The social structure and hierarchy of patrons within a community have, since the Middle Ages, been signalled by the clothes they wore. Social class was a birthright. Today, sporting luxury brands continues to serve as status symbols, but unlike mediaeval times, it is not limited to people with a high social standing at birth as one can work for status, and purchase the items because one deserves them. (Han, Nunes, & Drèze, 2010:15). In 2009, during the International Herald Tribune (IHT) Suzy Menkes, the fashion editor at The Herald, called for “luxury”’ and “fashion” to be separated. Luxury prides itself in its handcrafted garments manufactured by respected tradesmen in the industry. The outcome is that the manufactured goods are made to last a lifetime (Gibson, 2012:23).

Abstract:
Thesis (MComm)--Stellenbosch University, 2014.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Sustainability is a key requirement for business success and is often regarded a competitive advantage if strategically managed. Sustainability-mature organisations look to their value chains where the retailer-supplier relationship becomes critical in embedding sustainability. With this in mind, it has been established that a large South African retailer, Woolworths, has limited insight into the level of engagement in terms of sustainability with its key food suppliers, and no knowledge of the effectiveness of current tools used in enhancing their supply chain sustainability. This poses a problem, as it hinders the full implementation of Woolworth’s sustainability strategy across their value chain. In response to this, a study was undertaken to establish the level of engagement in terms of sustainability and obtain supplier feedback on the effectiveness of current tools used to enhance Woolworth’s supply chain sustainability. To facilitate this, the United Nations’ Global Compact and the Supply Chain Sustainability Guideline were utilised. Secondary research was conducted by means of a literature review covering the theoretical concepts of corporate social responsibility, sustainability, supply chain sustainability and retailer-supplier collaboration. The qualitative and exploratory nature of the study necessitated a case study research design, while the technique of purposive sampling was used to select the sample of three of Woolworths’ food suppliers. Data was collected by means of semi-structured interviews facilitated by an interview guide, and data analysis was conducted with Atlas.ti software. It was determined that the current engagement around sustainability between Woolworths and their suppliers is still at a basic and broad level, with a strong environmental focus. Additionally, monitoring and support of sustainability initiatives seems to be lacking. Managerial implications emphasise the importance of an integrated sustainability approach driven by the retailer and a strong focus on collaboration and communication with suppliers around ongoing sustainability challenges and opportunities. The United Nations Global Compact Supplier Engagement Continuum was utilised as a framework to map the current level of engagement and was amended for use in the South African context. Future research agendas suggest replica studies in other industries, and that the amended continuum should be tested and further refined for the South African context. In conclusion, specific propositions were formulated to aid future research.
High-technology manufacturing companies often face rapid price decline and capacity constraints. Especially in the retail side of the business where the supply chain is much longer and revenue is sometimes not recognized until the sell-through point, optimizing inventory positioning is critical. No longer is a one-size-fits-all approach sufficient; in order to perform optimally, manufacturers should categorize their retailers, stores, and products, and tailor their strategy for each accordingly. This work shows how to use metrics such as gross margin return on inventory investment, models and tools such as assortment, promotional risk, supply chain, and replenishment segmentation to drive improvements in inventory performance and recommends ways to apply them in different retail chains. In particular, three retailer types - discount retailers, specialty retailers, and convenience retailers are discussed.

Abstract:
Background: COVID-19 has brought so many changes in the business environment and in the ways of doing business. Food retail companies in Sweden have been trying to cope with the changes and challenges and have made necessary decisions to become resilient. It is in their urge to become resilient; however, the implementation is arduous at times. Purpose: The purpose of the thesis is two-folded. One is to know the supply chain inefficiencies, and the other is to understand how the inefficiencies can be mitigated through the actions of the supply chain professionals. Method: Semi-structured questions have been asked in the interviews to gather in-depth insights from the industry expert. The interviews were taken from the branch managers of food retail stores in Sweden. The analysis has been done based on the content analysis. Findings: Content analysis assisted the emergence of the factors. It was done by analyzing the quotes from the branch managers. Therefore, the relationship between the characteristics and the RBV theory has been scrutinized. Conclusion: The purpose of the thesis was to find the inefficiencies of the food retail supply chain in pandemic times. Also, it was to find the solution about how the supply chain inefficiencies can be tackled to ensure supply chain resilience in the food retail stores in Sweden. For that purpose, data have been collected right from the field where the action takes place, and therefore, the data have been analyzed. Hence, the problems have been found, and the solutions have been recommended.

Smith, David L. G. "The role of retailers as channel captains in retail supply chain change : the example of Tesco." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/190.

Abstract:
The large scale retailer with a strong retail brand and sufficient critical mass in the market place may reach a pivotal point in its development when the directors can address the question: “Does the company want to get directly involved in the functions of centralised buying, logistics and supply chain management?” This thesis takes one such company and expands in some detail about its growth towards excellence in the techniques of retail supply chain change. The evolution and critical decision moments provide an in depth case study for others to use as a benchmark. Its purpose is to examine the role of the retailer as a channel captain; a concept from an earlier marketing era, whose origins it reveals. It takes that learning together with contemporary supply chain thinking and examines real retail supply chain events in Tesco. The results of matching the new and old academic theory with practitioner events confirm that the channel captain is the retailer. It demonstrates that retailers can make the transition into that leadership position and apply supply chain management skills to competitive advantage. This can become a strategic tool both at national and international levels. The principles of this thesis could be used or applied in research in three areas: in depth with Tesco; in breadth, exporting expertise to other retailers; globally with retailers extending the operations internationally and suppliers seeking to trade with European retailers.

Dell Inc. has undertaken a major transformation in strategy since the return of its founder, Michael Dell as company CEO in January 2007. One major aspect of this new strategy is a renewed focus on the consumer market, historically an afterthought compared to Dell's traditional enterprise clientele. In order to more effectively reach consumers around the world, Dell has decided to abandon its direct-only channel strategy and partner with a number of retailers around the world. At the same time, Dell has decided to partner with Contract Manufacturers (CM) and Original Design Manufacturers (ODM) in order to lower manufacturing costs in the extremely competitive consumer market. Dell's initial entry into Retail and move to some CM/ODM has had both positive and negative effects. Sales volumes have gone up and initial feedback from the retail partners has been encouraging. However, these dramatic changes have exposed some weaknesses in Dell's Build-to-Order supply chain including the demand forecast and capacity planning. The Supply Chain group at Dell would like to understand these unintended effects and adjust the supply chain to mitigate any negative impacts. The project involves three phases: identifying the challenges of selling PCs through the retail channel and the challenges of outsourcing manufacturing, quantifying the impact of Retail and CM/ODM on Dell manufacturing capacity and offering recommendations for future supply chain design. The results highlight some unexpected outcomes - Dell could require far more manufacturing capacity in the future than originally anticipated based on the initial effects of retail and CM/ODM. The analysis in this thesis suggests that Dell will need to increase order lead-times or decrease daily order variability in retail sales to manage with its current manufacturing capacity. Additionally, Dell will need to minimize the number of different CM/ODM's it partners with in order to benefit from demand pooling and prevent a need for increased manufacturing capacity.

Abstract:
The supply chain management efficacy of today s competitive environment in Brazil has been identified, in print, as a solution to guarantee profitability, and therefore continuity of companies that are increasingly seeking to integrate their respective supply chains in order to achieve some sort of competitive advantage. However, in the management models presented in print, the tax issue has been considered in a superficial way and thereby failing to fulfill an important role in identifying opportunities that can be converted into economic benefits arising from tax transactions well planned. This study aims to analyze the taxation impact on the supply chain management and, in particular, in the retail sector, through a case study of locating a distribution center, in which a real situation is presented where a company in this sector, drawing on the concepts of tax avoidance, established a distribution center in a distant region of his main consumer market and its suppliers.

Abstract:
Thesis (Master of Retail Business Management)--Cape Peninsula University of Technology, 2020
Like many other suppliers, South African fashion-clothing designers have dealt with a very competitive environment within the retail industry. Thus, this research study explored the most suitable supply-chain-management model for South African fashion designers to achieve efficiency and economic sustainability within the retail environment. In today’s complex markets, the susceptibility of the supply chain is viewed as an ongoing issue for several industries and it is no different for fashion designers. As a result, in the past, the visibility of South African fashion designers in the retail environment appeared to be minimal. Matching the appropriate supplychain-management model with South African fashion designers in retail was the purpose and core focus of this research study, as the “one size fits all” approach appeared questionable and perhaps unrelatable to SMMEs. This research study explored the relationships between fashion designers and clothing retailers, together with supporting stakeholders such as government institutions, fashion councils, educational institutions, and the different consultants or agents. This was done to establish how the different parts could potentially function individually or collaboratively in order to develop an effective and sustainable supply-chain-management model for South African fashion designers in the retail environment. The primary focus and aim of the study was to assess the different functions within the supply-chain-management model and propose a more relevant model for South African fashion designers supplying the retail clothing environment. To reach the objectives of this research study, the empirical information was collected through the qualitative approach, by making use of in-depth semi-structured interviews, as that allowed the participants to answer the questions unreservedly based on their own personal and professional experience. The problem this research study identified was that a significant number of South African fashion-designer brands struggled to maintain longevity and success within the retail environment, due to the supply-chain changes South African fashion designers experienced when supplying retail. Through empirical research, it was identified that the supply-chain-management models available for retail clothing suppliers were designed for larger businesses and not specifically for fashiondesigner businesses which were classified as small, medium and micro-sized enterprises (SMMEs). The findings revealed that, for the fashion and retail clothing industry to realise an effective and sustainable supply-chain-management model for South African designers, the supply chain required good communication and support. The study recommended the establishment of close-proximity hubs, with fashion clothing supply chain functions, in major South African metropolitan cities, which could possibly be achieved through specialised and regulated education and the formation of a national fashion council.

Abstract:

Introduction As the world is becoming increasingly integrated, many firms search for partners overseas with hope to find benefits. Internationalization is today the industrial norm, and in this new and ever-expanding environment, international purchasing has become a major challenge that firms have to face in their daily operations. Yet, despite the growing importance of international purchasing by retailers, previous studies have mainly focused on international purchasing by manufacturing firms, and as the authors have acknowledge the retailers' significance on the national markets, a gap has been identified.

Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to examine and map out the current state of Swedish retailers' international purchasing activities.

Method In order to fulfill the purpose, a quantitative research was chosen. In total, 74 telephone interviews have been conducted, resulting in a response rate of 80 percent. The sample was based on the 120 largest retailers in Sweden, with regards to turnover.

Conclusion Swedish retailers have been grouped into four distinctive clusters; the Veterans, the Freshmen, the Cravens, and the Intellectuals. Each cluster showed clear and specific characteristics that distinguished them from each other. One common feature existed; regarding what risks that were connected with international purchasing. Almost everyone highlighted the loss of control, due to long distances, as being the main risk with international purchasing. The different clusters had diverse suggestions for how to overcome this; the Veterans focused on long-term relationship-building, the Freshmen spread their purchasing activities on multiple suppliers, the Cravens contracted trade companies to take the risk, and the Intellectuals invested in a high level of integration among all actors involved.

Over the past several years, Hewlett-Packard Company's North America Consumer Computing (NACC) division has faced pressures to increase retail product variety in response to growing customer demand. As they pursue incremental revenue and market share to meet corporate milestones, their, product portfolio grows and the overall complexity of the business increases. The holistic effects of this complexity across the supply chain are not fully understood, which can lead to inefficiencies in portfolio management and, ultimately, lower profitability for the division. Faced with this growing problem, the NACC division employed an HP internal consulting group to help quantify the costs and benefits of complexity in their business and to help establish decision-making guidelines to optimize future product cycles. This project involved three main phases: identification of complexity cost drivers in the retail consumer PC business, development of a quantitative model to calculate complexity effects, and suggestion of complexity guidelines for future portfolio planning. Each phase included presentations to senior management and NACC staff as a way to build "complexity consciousness" throughout the organization.
(cont.) The results show that complexity affects not only supply chain and operational efficiency, but also marketing costs, internal accounting systems, and organizational performance. By understanding the difference between valuable and non-valuable variety, NACC has improved their portfolio planning and eliminated products that hurt overall profitability.

Abstract:
The retail industry is today characterized by downward price pressure, and the increasedcompetition in the industry has led to pressure on profit margins. Purchasing and supply chainmanagement have become areas of increased strategic importance and play a crucial role inthe business performance. This study aims to extend previous literature in these fields byproviding the existing research with an empirical study on how the purchasing strategy canincorporate a total cost perspective of the supply chain. The purpose of this study was to suggest aspects to incorporate in the purchasing strategywith the objective to consider a total cost perspective of the supply chain. This was donethrough conducting an empirical case study at a Swedish middle sized retail company, bycollecting and analyzing both qualitative and quantitative data through interviews, meetingsand internal databases. Challenges that prohibit the case company to apply a total costperspective were identified in the purchasing process and a total cost model was built tovisualize how these affect total costs. Our findings show that there are six challenges thatprohibit the case company to include the total cost perspective in the purchasing process; theinability to reach minimum order quantities (MOQ), production specific requirements, thedifficulty to combine order suggestions on related stock keeping units (SKU), an uneven flowof orders to suppliers, inefficient time supply period and an inability to coordinate transports.Three aspects were identified as root causes for these challenges and suggested to the casecompany to incorporate in their purchasing strategy to enable the management of total costs inthe supply chain. The aspects are flexible time supply periods, internal and externalinformation sharing and coordination of transport. Furthermore, this research also gives anunderstanding of how the formation of the private label assortment fuels the challenges thatprohibit the company to take a total cost perspective.

Abstract:
An increasing number of retail groups is facing problems with optimizing distribution and replenishment of products to serve stores. Lead times in the fashion industry are long and dealers often have to plan their purchases several months in advance for the coming seasons. The products are packed in production before they are sent to the central warehouse. Decisions about the pack configuration are made in connection with the purchase order. By packaging multiple stock-keeping units (SKUs) together, the efficiency increase and the costs in the supply chain can be reduced, while misallocation costs may arise. The master thesis is performed at the Venue Retail Group, which is a leading group in the Nordic region within the accessories, travel equipment and shoes. The objective of the paper is to identify the optimal pack configuration in order to generate increased turnover sales within the supply chain for own production synthetic bags. In this paper the pack problem is formulated as an optimization problem. A model is designed to determine the optimal packing order quantities that satisfy every store category's forecasted demand with the goal to minimize the total costs. By mapping product flow and identifying costs related to pack configuration the paper suggest a change of Venue Retail Groups existing pack strategy to achieve the objective.

Abstract:
The issue of food scandals originating from unsafe food has in recent years caught the attention of the public. Consequently, the number of food recalls has increased, and food retailers and food producers are getting questioned regarding their ability to provide consumers with safe food products. Thus, because the primary responsibility to deal with this problem is the food business operators who have real control over the products within the Food Supply Chain (FSC). Even though food safety has received more interest from academic researchers and practitioners in the latter years, we could identify that previous literature still lacks research on food recalls. In addition, prior research interprets food recalls as generalizable within the FSC and does not have its various product flows in mind. In order to fill the research gap, this study seeks to gain a deeper understanding of food recalls in the context of the different product flows within the FSC from a retailer perspective. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to investigate how the occurrence and the consequences of food recall differ across various product flows within the FSC by focusing on four elements. The elements include the challenges within the FSC to ensure food quality, the reasons behind food recall, the types of food recall, and the consequences they infer. The current study had finally answered the following research question: “How do the occurrence and the consequences of food recalls differ across various product flows within the FSC?” In order to answer the research question and address the purpose of the thesis, a qualitative study was conducted by focusing on Swedish food retailers and conducting interviews with responsible Purchasers within each of the product flows, and additionally, Quality Assurance Managers. The sample of the semi-structured interviews was selected based on the position and experience of food recalls within the retailers. This to assure that the interviewees possessed sufficient insights regarding the studied field to fulfill the purpose of the study and answer its research question. From the gathered data, several themes were derived through the thematic analysis, and the analysis and discussion regarding the elements led us to a conclusion. The result confirmed that the various product flows, and in some cases, even specific products within the flows, need to be taken into consideration when the occurrence and the consequences of food recalls are addressed within the FSC. This is because the different product flows include different products with different characteristics making them more or less complex to handle along the chain and when carrying out food recalls. Even though previous theories assume a general approach, the findings still confirmed the theories regarding the challenges within the FSC to ensure food quality, the reasons behind recalls, the types of recalls, and the consequences the recalls can infer. However, the main differences found between our study and prior research regarding the FSC were that supply chain-related reasons are more commonly related to food reclaims and that environmental consequences are considered an additional consequence of food recalls.

Abstract:
The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies small physical commodities firm owners need to establish a distribution channel within the commodities market to enhance profits. The general business problem was that importing physical commodities from emerging markets was not profitable. The specific business problem was some small physical wholesale commodities firm managers lacked strategies to establish distribution channels for imported commodities. The information presented in this study is important to suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, and retailers of organic cacao products to identify strategies to enhance their distribution channels. Disruptive innovation and the theory of constraints grounded the conceptual framework to relate ideas presented in this study. The central research question guiding the study concerned strategies small physical wholesale commodities firm owners used to establish distribution channels within the commodities market. Participants included 6 small business owners who gave recorded responses during in-depth, face-to-face interviews. The 6 interview recordings were transcribed, then coded and interpreted. Data analysis revealed 6 themes, which included price point strategy, B2B relationships, differentiation, strategic locations, sufficient operating capital, and customer relationships. Enhancing profits in the distribution channels of small organic cacao companies requires a holistic approach in the New York City area. The social implications of this study may draw attention to organic cacao, which is a healthy alternative to confectionery chocolate. Strategies introduced to enhance profits may increase economic growth in the local communities in the New York Tri-State area.

Hsiao, Ju-Miao Melody. "The Impact of Retailer-Supplier Cooperation and Decision-Making Uncertainty on Supply Chain Performance." University of Sydney, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/2098.

Full text
Abstract:
Doctor of Philosophy
Buyer-supplier relationships have been increasingly considered a critical part of contemporary supply chain management. In response to dynamic and unpredictable market changes, buyers and suppliers enter into cooperative relationships to pursue individual goals and joint goals for better economic and non-economic performance of the supply chain. On the other hand, cooperation between channel members is surrounded by uncertainty, which can create a detrimental impact on the performance of a supply chain. Previous research has focused on various aspects of uncertainty that could affect supply chain member behaviour. The present research contends that relationship behavioural factors play an important role in increasing or mitigating channel members’ perceived uncertainty in their supply or purchase decision-making. Specifically, the purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of retailer-supplier cooperation and retailer/supplier’s decision-making uncertainty (DMU) on retail supply chain performance from the perspectives of both the retailer and the supplier. A holistic model was developed as the theoretical framework for this conceptualisation. A sample of 202 retailers and 64 suppliers in the sporting goods retail business in Taiwan was used to separately test a number of hypothesised relationships by using structural equation modelling (SEM). The findings indicate that both cooperation and DMU are the key determinants of retail supply chain performance, including financial performance and non-financial performance (i.e., supply flexibility and customer service). Financial performance is positively affected by retailer-supplier cooperation and negatively affected by DMU in both the retailer model and the supplier model. The five dimensions of retailer-supplier cooperation (i.e. trust, guanxi, dependence, coercive power and non-coercive power) have significant effects on cooperation. However, apart from guanxi with the retailer/supplier, neither other relationship dimensions nor retailer-supplier cooperation have any influence on retailer’s DMU or supplier’s DMU. The results also indicate that differences and similarities exist across retailers and suppliers with respect to the effects of several relationship dimensions on cooperation and uncertainty. 2 The holistic empirical model developed for this research contributes further to understanding the links, which have been lacking in the extant channel relationship literature and supply chain management literature, between buyer-supplier relationships, DMU, and supply chain performance. The findings that a retailer/supplier’s DMU can erode the performance of a supply chain in various aspects highlight the need for improvement in some areas of supply chain efficiency and effectiveness, through cooperation-enhancing actions between the retailer and the supplier. From a managerial perspective, the performance improvement in the supply chain, in turn, will motivate more reciprocal commitment and efforts from the retailer and the supplier to maintain their working relationship. As such, mutual trust and enriched guanxi, dependence and non-coercive power help both the retailer and the supplier to have less uncertainty in their purchase/supply decision-making process. It creates a win-win position for both parties in the supply chain.

Abstract:
Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI) policy has been widely used in various supply chains due to the benefits such as lower inventory levels and costs of retailer, and less frequent stock outs. In this study, the benefits of VMI policy in a manufacturer-retailer setting are analyzed under three different scenarios (Traditional Decision Making, VMI agreement and Centralized Decision Making). A manufacturer that produces a particular product is considered and that product is sold to a retailer operating under known demand forecasts. Under Traditional Decision Making System, each party is responsible for its own costs. Under VMI, manufacturer controls the replenishment decisions of the retailer and solves a Constrained Two-Echelon Lot Sizing Problem with Backordering. Under Centralized Decision Making, manufacturer and retailer act like merged, the problem under consideration is Two-Echelon Single Item Lot Sizing with Backordering. Through an extensive numerical study, three different scenarios&rsquo
results are compared and the conditions beneficial under VMI are identified. Under VMI, a Lagrangean Relaxation algorithm is proposed to reduce solution time. In terms of computational effort, solution times of proposed algorithm and MIP model are compared.

This research investigates the management of green supply chains through the major implications of management control systems. Green supply chain management characteristics that define high performing buyer-supplier engagements were: sustainability, performance management, quality management, shared investment, waste reduction, and the relationship between partners. This study found that a buying firm needs to employ management control systems in ensuring the supplier outputs. Collaborative management, another important facet in effectiveness of green supply chain management, was found to define successful buyer-supplier relationships. The study also found challenges with initial investment and opportunism, that companies should safeguard themselves through substantive agreements. Mutual investment by both manufacturer and retailer into their operations enhances service to customers and managing relationships in green supply chain management.

Abstract:
The increasing of competition levels between firms, as evidenced primarily by the process of globalization of markets, helps organizations to seek more innovative management alternatives that might make them able to survive in this scenario of constant changing. At the same time, there is the emergence in the last two decades of several studies that begin to deal with a collaborative and integrative perspective of firms in supply chain management (SCM), examining the role of the relationship between manufacturing and marketing as an important agent that acts in the process of delivering products and services to the final customer. In this context, transactions involving the processes of production and commercialization (manufacturing and retail) are an important function of SCM, because they represent the role of intermediary between the products processing and the availability to the consumer. Thus the main function in relation to their management is to develop mechanisms for collaborative operation and people\'s development that can enhance this process of production and distribution. The design of people\'s performance, focused on continuous and integrated learning of the individuals\' organization, starts to become clearer and the analysis of its performance, individually and collectively, becomes an essential item for the activities of manufacturing and marketing management in an SCM succeed. At the same time, the use of educational techniques that propose to develop a learning design prioritizing life experience represents an important mechanism for contributing to the construction process of individual learning (acquiring knowledge and developing skills and attitudes). Among the various educational techniques studied, the presentation of business situations through the use of simulation in the business game stands out as an important method of experiential learning, by providing the individual with the experience and the development of analysis and reflection on the proposed problems, and an active stance at the face of organizational facts presented. This research aims to reflect on its central point the importance, in an educational context for learning through the simultaneous use of two simulators, the collaborative relationship in SCM. The contribution of this work is based on the following assumptions: present and analyze the proposal for simultaneous use of two organizational simulators that can assist the process of experiential learning (through business games); analyze how the use of more than one simulator can simultaneously depict, with greater degree of fidelity, the operations of the organization relationship in a supply chain; and provide evidence that might support future studies to justify a methodology for simultaneous use of two organizational simulators. The proposed approaches in this study allow infer that the adopted life experience (business game) with the simultaneous use of two simulators is an important educational tool to support studies on the collaborative relationship in the supply chain. The obtained results allowed us to verify that the proposal of the released learning design achieved its objectives because the simultaneous use of two simulators expanded the range of analysis and decision-making of the firms. This provided a greater sense of realism in the simulation, generating motivation and involvement of teams\' members, creating greater reflection on the conceptual issues addressed in the proposed game.

Abstract:
We consider a two-level supply chain involving a manufacturer and a retailer who serves as the quality gatekeeper. The manufacturer determines a wholesale price and a defective rate and announces his decisions to the retailer, who then makes her decisions on the retail price and identification rate that means the percent- age of the defects identified by the retailer and reflects the retailer’s gatekeeping effort on her quality assurance. We accordingly develop a leader-follower game and solve it to find Stackelberg equilibrium for the manufacturer and the retailer. In order to examine whether or not the supply chain benefits from the retailer's quality gatekeeping effort, we also develop and solve another leader-follower game where the manufacturer still announces its wholesale pricing and defective rate decisions but the retailer only decides on the retail price. We show that the manufacturer’s equilibrium defective rate for the game with the retailers gate-keeping is higher than that for the game without the retailer’s gatekeeping. The ratio of the manufacturers profit to the retailer’s profit is increased when the retailer serves as the gatekeeper. Moreover, the retailer reduces her price when she acts as the gatekeeper, if and only if the supply chain-wide cost decreases as a result of the retailer’s gatekeeping effort. We also perform sensitivity analysis of each parameter in our game models to further examine the impacts of the retailer’s gatekeeping on the manufacturer’s and the retailer’s decisions and profits. We find that the retailer’s penalty cost per defect has more significant impacts than the manufacturer’s unit penalty cost. The paper ends with a summary of managerial insights.

Abstract:
The highly variable demand of fast fashion causes retailers in the industry to face large uncertainties when allocating initial inventory batches across multiple locations. Further into the selling season, inventory imbalances might arise as an effect of deviations from expected demand. To mitigate these imbalances, retailers can make use of lateral transshipments of inventory from locations with excess stock to those facing the risk of a stockout. Such transshipments require models for determining what and how much to ship as well as when to ship it. This thesis investigates how such a model can be applied on replenishment warehouse level in a fast-fashion retail setting. The research was conducted through a quantitative case study at Hennes & Mauritz (H&M), one of the largest fast-fashion retailers in the world. An appropriate existing transshipment model based on the concept of service level was identified and adjusted to suit the characteristics of H&M. In contrast to the vast majority of models in literature, empirical probability distributions were used for dynamically modelling short-term demand. The proposed model was evaluated and found to suggest transshipments yielding significant revenue increase driven by lowered price reductions. This thesis differs from existing literature by providing a unique case-study of how a transshipment model can be applied in practice and how it performs on empirical data from one of the largest fast-fashion retailers in the world.

Abstract:
This dissertation offers an empirical investigation of the links between the political sphere and the management of local public services in France. When they administer public services, local governments can decide either to provide a service in-house, or to externalize its management, and therefore conclude contracts with private entities. First, this choice of governance is analyzed in the case of French school canteens and the political drivers of this choice are highlighted. The political contestation in the municipal election is found to be one of the drivers of the organizational choice. Second, we analyzed public-private contracts in case of externalization. We found those contracts to be more rigid than pure private contracts. Besides, this excessive rigidity can be explained by the level of political contestation in the municipality. Finally, the determinants of the local food supply is studied. We find that the availability of alternative food networks is sometimes driven by political considerations. This dissertation contributes to add knowledge to the understanding of the management of local public services, as well as to the understanding of food retail stores availability

Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior
The present work had as main objective the identification of the composition and supply chain management of horticulture products, meat and derivatives, milk and derivatives in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul. Specifically, it characterized the supply chain of the products in the retail networks of the region, it identified the strategies of the retail networks, as well as the mechanisms of coordination existing and used by the networks, and, once there are these data, it objectified, also, evaluating the perspectives on inserting the agricultural producers of the region in this productive circuit. For the execution of the multiple cases study, the representatives of the retail networks of the region were interviewed to find out: the more important competitive criteria for inserting them in the circuit; what agents do the negotiations; what are the mechanisms that co-ordinate the transactions between the retail and its suppliers. Was conducted, also, a survey with the producers to know how many agricultural units of production in the region work with the products of interest researched, as well as the analysis of the agrarian structure, product quality, scale of production, commercialization and competitive criterion they believe are the more important for its insertion in formal circuits of commercialization. It could be concluded from the different analyzed panoramas that the retail networks do not possess legalized mechanisms of coordination together with its suppliers for distinct situations. Taking into consideration the networks themselves, it is remarkable the phenomenon of mimicry isomorphism from small networks to the big ones. Finally, in the scope of agricultural producers, it is remarkable that they face different kinds of problems for accessing the retail networks. It is clearly that the producers lack of professionalism is the main impediment for reverting the panorama. Adaptations that conduct them to production scale, logistic of supplying and after-sale works are crucial to obtain an allocation in formal circuits of commercialization.

ABSTRACT The basic grocery supply chain and the retailers themselves make use of practices to support management of business processes with the aim of better meeting demand requirements and/or reduced costs of the processes along the supply chain. However, by researching the management of the supply chain of more specific product categories, such as fruit and vegetables, it can be observed that there is a significant difference in management of the supply chain for these products compared to basic grocery. The differences are due to, among other factors, the particularities of the supplier market, competitiveness, and the strategic importance of fruit and vegetables for the retailers. On the other hand, products with shorter shelf life, like fruit and vegetables, require more attention on managing the order-todelivery cycle, so that the availability at point of sale is guaranteed. The lower the order-todelivery cycle, the longer the product will be available before it becomes inappropriate for commercialization. Moreover, differently to the suppliers of basic groceries, the supplier base of fruit and vegetables in a national context are characterized by low professionalization of manpower and poor management infrastructure. In this context, the objective of this project is to develop a method for planning the supply process of fruits and vegetables in retail supply chains . For this purpose it was proposed to undertake case studies in different store formats, distribution centers and first-tier suppliers. As result it is expected to analyze the differences between the categories of basic groceries and fruits and vegetables, thus showing the contextual factors that lead to the need for a method for planning the supply process of fruits and vegetables in retail supply chains. Finally, it is expected to contribute by proposing a method that takes into account such particularities. This research contributes to the theory, since it groups under-researched elements in a specific sector, the fruits and vegetables, in order to contribute to the development of the subject taking into account the Brazilian context. Beside this, it is expected that the results of this thesis contribute to the practice of retail supply chains, particularly the management of supply and distribution of fruit and vegetables items.
Abstract:
The aim of this PhD research is to study the impact of the inventory inaccuracy issue on replenishment policies under the wholesaling / e-retailing context. The inventory inaccuracy is defined as a discrepancy between the quantity shown by the Informational System and the quantity actually Physically available for sales. Such discrepancy has as root many sources of errors such as execution, transaction, misplacement, supply unreliability or shrinkage errors. We provide empirical evidence on the wide presence of inventory inaccuracies through one case study of wholesaling organizations. In e-retailing context customers’ demands are remotely satisfied based on the inventory level shown in the information system. The main interest of the research community was about studying the inaccuracy under the retail context. After motivating our research empirically and by the literature review, we develop three inventory frameworks subject to inventory inaccuracies under the wholesaling / e-retailing context with different configurations of the stochastic errors describing the inaccuracy issue. The error configuration could be additive for some sources of inaccuracies such as transaction as well as multiplicative (also known as stochastically proportional) for other sources such as shrinkage. Our first inventory framework aims to extend single-period (Newsvendor) model to the e-retailing/wholesaling context subject to inaccuracy. In Addition, to providing managerial insights, we compare the behavior of the optimal ordering strategies under the additive and the multiplicative error settings. Our second inventory framework is an extension of the former to the case of two selling periods. By solving exactly the two-period problem, we show that the behavior of the optimal ordering quantities is not monotonic, and conclude that a myopic policy could not be optimal. Thanks to a numerical study, we derive some interesting managerial insights about the management of the error risk between the two selling periods. Thanks to the theoretical results of our second inventory framework, we propose a third framework dealing with the inventory inaccuracy issue under a multi-period setting by assuming cost minimizing as a target but also by considering two Cycle Service Level constraints to achieve, the former for the demand satisfaction and the latter for the sales commitment satisfaction. We provide a comprehensive numerical study by comparing several policies as making inspection and RFID deployment
