Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to examine service level agreements (SLAs) in the retail industry and uses empirical data to draw conclusions on the relationships between SLA parameters and retailer financial performance.Design/methodology/approachBased on prior SLA theories, hypotheses about the impacts of SLA confidentiality, choice of chargeback mechanisms and chargeback penalty on retailer inventory turnover are tested.FindingsRetailer inventory turnover could vary by the level of SLA confidentiality, and the variation of retailer inventory turnovers could be explained by chargeback penalty.Research limitations/implicationsThe research findings may not be readily applicable to SLAs outside of the retail industry. Also, most conclusions were drawn from publicly available SLAs.Practical implicationsThe significant relationships between SLA parameters and retailer inventory turnover imply that a retailer could improve its financial performance by leveraging its SLA design.Originality/valueNot only does this study contribute to the understanding of retail SLA design in practice, but it also extends prior theories by investigating the implications of SLA design on the retailer inventory turnover.

Abstract:
Subject. The article deals with econometric analysis of retail turnover in Russia and its relationship with macroeconomic indicators, like real disposable household income, consumer prices, etc. Objectives. The purpose is to create effective models to analyze the retail turnover in Russia and its relationship with other macroeconomic indicators, taking into account the existence of periods of economic instability. Methods. I apply correlation and regression methods to analyze statistics. To quantify changes in the retail turnover of Russia during the periods of economic instability, I use dummy variables. Results. The Russia’s retail trade turnover index had a reverse and moderate relationship with the consumer price index, direct and strong relationship with the indices of real disposable household income and imports, direct relationship with the manufacturing index. I offer statistically significant regression models of Russia’s retail turnover with the said macroeconomic indicators. Conclusions. The main advantage of models of retail turnover that are built using a large number of observations is a greater number of simultaneously considered factors. The quantitative assessment of retail turnover elasticity by consumer prices confirms the need for inflation targeting by the Central Bank of the Russian Federation. The higher elasticity of retail turnover in manufacturing as compared with the imports denotes the importance of import substitution policy.

Abstract:
Retail inventory is an important indicator for retailers as well as their shareholders and suppliers. Inventory enables retailer to sell products to customer but excessive or slow moving inventory also add extra cost. For shareholders and suppliers this is an indication of retailer’s bright or grim future. The aim of this research is to analyze the inventory turnover’s impact on the performance variables of profit margin percentage and sale surprise in one of the retailing firm of Hubei province China. We will study if inventory turnover is affected by profit margin percentage and sale surprise similarly across all categories and modes of operation in retail firm or there is some variation in the known behavior. We will be testing our hypothesis on data of a large local supermarket chain that operates in the Hubei province of China. They have multiple supermarkets in the tier 1 and tier 2 cities of the province. We investigate correlation of inventory turnover with profit margin percentage and sale surprise across different categories and modes of operation. The analysis reveals that there is a negative correlation between Inventory Turnover and profit margin percentage, while positive correlation exists between Inventory Turnover and Sale surprise across all categories and modes. But its rate of correlation varies between categories and channel structure.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of perceived external prestige on turnover intentions among retail employees in India. Moreover, this study aims to explore the mediating effect of affective commitment on the relationship between perceived external prestige and turnover intentions. Design/methodology/approach – This study is quantitative in nature. The data for the present study were collected from 186 employees working in various retail stores. Existing, established scales were used to measure the research constructs. Findings – The results of the study indicate a negative relationship between perceived external prestige and turnover intentions. A negative relationship was observed between affective commitment and turnover intentions. Moreover, affective commitment was observed to partially mediate the relationship between perceived external prestige and turnover intentions. Practical implications – This study provides valuable insights into understanding the significance of perceived external prestige in retaining employees working in the retail sector. Findings of the study indicate that adoption of non-conventional human resource strategies, like a focus on enhancing external prestige of the organization may be one of the ways to enhance employee commitment and reduce turnover intentions, and thus to retain employees in economies with highly mobile workforce. Originality/value – This research has investigated the significance of perceived external prestige in retaining employees in a context which is different, in several ways, from contexts where most of the previous research has been conducted. It, thus, contributes to current theoretical understanding about perceived external prestige and it impact on work attitudes.

Abstract:
This is a theoretical paper that aims to explore the determinants of employee turnover intention among retail SMEs in Dubai in terms of incivility (customer, coworker, supervisor) and the mediating role of emotional exhaustion with the moderating effect of resilience. The retail industry in Dubai will be one of the main beneficiaries of the study since it appears that they suffer high turnover intention and cost. Managements and owners of retail SMEs in Dubai would be able to get a better idea of the determinants of employee turnover intention and workplace incivility through the analysis and recommendations developed by the research. Data would be gathered from participants (i.e. employees of retail SMEs in Dubai) who have direct contact with customers, coworkers and supervisors/ management. Viewed in this manner, data gathered would be analyzed in two stages, using descriptive statistics and structural equation modeling using computer software including, SPSS/STATA, AMOS/ Smart-PLS. This paper would elaborate the literature on turnover intention and incivility Subsequently, the research will illustrate the mediating role emotional exhaustion and the moderation effect of resilience among retail SMEs employees in Dubai. Abstract:
Retail trade turnover represents one of the most fundamental socio-economic indicators. Constant monitoring of such indicators has a pivotal role in modernization of the Russian economy. Retail trade turnover reflects countries’ economic capacity and standard of living. This paper proposes a statistically significant econometric model of the retail trade turnover dependence with respect to different factors. Such factors as consumer prices index, unemployment level and average monthly designed salary were taken as the explanatory variables. The variables were selected based on Granger causality test and time series analysis of several socio-economic indicators. For each explanatory variable, a statistically significant model ARIMA (1, 1, 0) was constructed, with the help of which the predicted values of the explanatory variables for October, November and December 2019 were calculated, which were used to forecast the retail turnover for these months.

Abstract:
Purpose Research investigating turnover intention among frontline employees in the Indian retail industry is scarce. The purpose of this paper is to explore factors affecting withdrawal cognitions among front-end retail employees in India. Design/methodology/approach Semi-structured interviews were conducted to explore the factors responsible for developing turnover intentions among the front-end employees. Data were analyzed using the ground theory approach. Findings Qualitative investigation revealed nine factors (abusive supervision, favoritism, perceived job image, insufficient pay, work exhaustion, perceived unethical climate, organization culture shock, staff shortage and job dissatisfaction) are responsible for developing turnover intention among front-end employees in the Indian retail industry. Originality/value The study uncovers antecedents of turnover intention among front-end employees in the relatively neglected Indian retail sector through a qualitative technique. Theoretical contributions, managerial implications, limitations and direction for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
Urban neighbourhoods are defined as much by their commercial character as their residential; retail services not only provide material needs for those living nearby, but less-tangible social and cultural capital as well. It is reasonable to expect, then, that excessive churn in these businesses can threaten the stability of a neighbourhood. Using a longitudinal data set on mixed-use neighbourhoods in New York City, we test whether or not neighbourhoods of varying circumstances and characteristics experience different degrees and types of retail turnover. Results suggest that there are meaningful differences in retail turnover across neighbourhoods. Retail turnover is directly associated with the type of business activity, commercial infrastructure and the neighbourhood’s consumer profile. However, when all three sets of factors are considered simultaneously in a regression analysis, consumer-related characteristics explain turnover more than those related to the local commercial environment. Specifically, businesses that provide necessity and more frequently consumed goods/services are more stable and chain establishments are more likely to venture into markets with some housing price discounts, growth potential and possibly less organised opposition. Neighbourhoods with less (and more heterogeneous) general retail (as opposed to food service) concentration, as well as bigger businesses, are more stable. More importantly, bigger households and higher shares of white residents are most strongly associated with less retail churn, and population growth is the strongest predictor of more turnover.

Abstract:
The paper focuses on the evaluation of the contemporary situation of two economic sectors in the frame of the European Union, namely the wholesale and retail of agricultural and food products. For these industries, the structural profile with the indicators of turnover, value added and employment was elaborated. Hereafter the costs, productivity and profitability indicators ranking of the top 5 Member States were compared to the EU-25 averages. After a 3.1% increase in the turnover index in 2000, the evolution of sales for the agricultural wholesaling sector recorded a series of small increases and decreases in the turnover, ranging from – 0.6% in 2002 to 1.5% in 2004. Between 2000 and 2005, the agricultural wholesaling sector generally recorded a slower rate of expansion for turnover than the wholesale trade average. The specialised in-store food retailing sector generated EUR 120.4 billion of turnover in 2003. The wealth creation of the specialised in-store food retailing was valued at EUR 23.8 billion; equivalent to 6.5% of the retail trade and repair total, while this activity employed 1.4 million persons, some 9.0% of the retail trade and repair workforce. Half (49.9%) of the turnover in the specialised in-store food retailing sector in the EU was generated by enterprises selling fruit, vegetables, meat, fish or bakery products.

Abstract:
Employee turnover rates are higher in the retail grocery industry in comparison to other industries. This level of turnover produces demoralizing effects on the grocery industrys profitability. The lack of evidence-based information regarding causes of employee turnover may result in senior level leadership within the retail grocery industry formulating retention strategies based upon conjecture. Basing retention strategies on turnover misconceptions may be costly and actually fail to reduce turnover. For these reasons, this study sought to fill the knowledge gap by providing the grocery industry with evidence-based information on the topic of employee turnover. In an effort to provide a better understanding of the factors that support an engaged workforce, data from 151 frontline retail grocery employees gathered perceptions of their work environment, burnout, and turnover intentions. The participating employees represented one grocery chain in Western New York. The key finding was that value conflicts have a strong, statistically significant relationship with cynicism, which in turn increases the likelihood for employee turnover. Making use of this evidence-based information may help in creating strategies for a more engaged workforce and retaining the most valuable employees.

The paper focuses on the retail turnover prediction with artificial neural networks. The artificial neural networks have the potential to learn complex, non-linear relationships within data. The main disadvantage is that neural networks are “black boxes”, so the user cannot explain the obtained results and relationships between data. The modular neural networks allow obtaining more appropriate results by splitting the task into subtasks, thus giving the user more information in the output. In many cases an additional advantage of modular neural network is more precise prediction results, which will be shown in the experimental part of this paper.

Abstract:
The article analyzes the structure, territorial organization and development dynamics of industries in Guba administrative region. The analysis of the complex of natural conditions shows that the basis for the development of industries in the region is the efficient use of local raw materials. However, the underutilization of these opportunities has created certain problems in the complex development of industry in the region as a whole. Despite the rich local natural resources and other opportunities, the share of industrial products in total production very little. As a result of statistical analysis, it was determined that in 2010 the retail trade turnover in the administrative region was 194.1 million manat, but in 2019 it increased to 453.3 million manat. This increase was also reflected in the trade turnover per capita. It is clear from the analysis of statistical data of the relevant years that these indicators amounted to 1253.18 manat and 2625.07 manat. It has also helped increase the share of local products. It was determined that currently the share of local products in the retail trade turnover in the administrative region is 78%. The share of imported products in retail trade turnover is only 22%. Attrition is the major problem in the Indian Retail Industry which experienced the attrition rate of 19.4% in FY 2016 according to KPMG Annual Compensation Trends Survey 2017-18. The focus of these organizations is to reduce turnover by focusing on the underlying factors leading to turnover intentions and actual turnover. The present study was conducted to explore the effect of job satisfaction and core self-evaluation on turnover intentions. The purpose of the study was also to see if core self-evaluation (CSE) moderates the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intentions. The study was conducted using structured questionnaires for measuring the above-mentioned variables. The sample of the study was 347 salespersons from various retail organizations working in Delhi and NCR. Hierarchical multiple regression showed that both job satisfaction and CSE were negatively related to turnover intentions. Also, CSE was found to moderate the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intentions such that the relationship was stronger for the employees with low core self-evaluation. The present study has important implications for policy makers in the retail sector. Managers should use strategies to increase job satisfaction in order to curb high attrition in this sector. They must be aware of the moderating role played by personality attributes in the relationship between job satisfaction and turnover intentions.

Abstract:
The purpose of the article is to identify the structural and regional peculiarities of developing retail trade in Ukraine during 1990–2019. On the basis of the research the author has come to conclusion that the process of developing retail trade in Ukraine during the years 1990–2018 can be divided into four periods, two of which (2000–2013 and 2016–2018) show positive dynamics of changes in the industry, and the other two (1991–1999 and 2014–2016) reflect the negative consequences of the processes that took place in the country’s economy at that time. The structure of retail trade of the whole period analyzed, with the exception of 1993–2001, was dominated by non-food goods. Their share increased from 55.6 % in 1990 to 61.5 % in 2018. The turnover structure at retail trade enterprises in 2005–2013 varied from region to region: in some regions the volume of retail turnover was increasing, while in others it was shrinking. The analysis has showed that during 2005–2019, the structure of Ukraine’s retail trade turnover was dominated by consumer goods produced in the country, but their share fell from 70.5% to 52.4%. The realization of consumer goods in Ukraine during the period analyzed was carried out mainly through traditional sales channels (i.e., shops). The research has resulted in proving that the share of trade turnover made with payment cards increased from 21.3 % to 30.8 % during 2017–2019. At the same time, retail trade, carried out by way of executing bank loan agreements, accounted for a small share, ranging from 2.2 to 2.4 %. A thorough analysis of the commodity structure of retail trade and that of the regional peculiarities of Ukrainian consumers’ preferences can serve as future research perspectives in this direction.

Abstract:
The paper presents an analysis of the methodological side of assessing the turnover of Lithuanian retail trade enterprises, i.e. the indicators to be employed in assessing changes in the volume and composition of the turnover over a longer term, their relationship with other national economic indicators, as well as their theoretical and practical significance. The analysis of changes in the volume and composition of the turnover of Lithuanian retail enterprises in 2000–2008 has revealed its positive and negative trends and the factors influencing these changes. The period under consideration is remarkable in that the years 2000–2001 marked the recovery of the Lithuanian economy after the financial crisis in Russia, its growth until the third quarter of 2008 and the beginning of its decline. The paper summarizes trends in and problems of changes in the volume and composition of the turnover of the country’s retail trade enterprises in the period under consideration and shows the possibilities for its development.

Abstract:
The study explored the link between the career anchors, organisational commitment and turnover intention of a sample of individuals employed in the South African retail sector. A non-probability purposive sample (N = 343) of employees from an organisation in the South African retail sector was utilised. The participants were represented by predominantly women (72%) and black people (94%) between the ages of 25 and 45 years (80%). Following a cross-sectional quantitative research approach, correlational and stepwise regression analysis was performed to achieve the objective of the study. The results showed that the entrepreneurial creativity-anchored individuals were likely to have low organisational commitment and high turnover intention, while the lifestyle-anchored individuals had high levels of organisational commitment and high turnover intention. The dominant affective/normative commitment profile of the sample of participants significantly predicted low turnover intention. The findings of the study and practical implications provide useful information to managers interested in retaining staff in the retail sector.

Abstract:
Digitalization affects many industries, including the service sector. In this area, under the influence of the “digitalization” of the economy, there is a tendency to transfer consumer demand to the Internet. The processes of digitalization of retail trade began several years ago, but during the coronavirus pandemic, they accelerated several times, as evidenced by the growth of turnover of Internet companies. The aim of the study is to predict the share of e-commerce in the structure of retail trade. Research methods: description, comparison, analogy, generalization and analysis. In the course of the study, the dynamics of retail trade, including Internet trade, was analysed, the impact of the pandemic on retail trade was analysed, and factors affecting structural changes in retail trade were identified. On the basis of linear regression, a model of the influence of the growth rate of e-commerce volumes on the growth rate of offline turnover is constructed. The forecast showed an increase in e-trade turnover, therefore, an increase in its share in the overall structure of retail trade. The pandemic accelerated the increase in the share of Internet trade in 2020 and adjusted forecasts for the following periods. The significant growth of ecommerce caused by the pandemic will slow down in the coming years, but the trend of buyer and seller switching to the Internet will continue, which will lead to structural changes in retail.

Abstract:
We study the effects of product variety on operational metrics - inventory turnover and on sales in different mode of operations. Research has shown that performance metrics can vary in different mode of operations. Using 41 months of data from a large retailer, we show that correlation of product variety with inventory turnover and sales is not always negative or positive as shown in previous studies. This correlation can vary depending upon the mode of operations and type of product. Our study highlights impact of increased product variety on inventory turnover and sales in different mode of operations that has previously been overlooked in studies of retail product variety and inventory management. Abstract:
As a newly developed city, Langsa City is one of the right areas to try. Introduced as a Service City, the city strives to meet the needs of its people. However, because Langsa City has minimal in industry, especially in medium and high scale industries, only consumptive needs can be met. Therefore, trade is a growing business, especially in retail businesses. Unfortunately, community retail businesses in recent years have experienced a decline in turnover, the main cause is the inability of local retail businesses to compete with national retail. Therefore the purpose of this study was to analyze the competition of national local economic retail business in a socio-economic way in Langsa City. Using a qualitative approach, the results show that the running of the national retail business in Langsa City has made local retailers turnover decline by an average of 30 percent and every year there are local retail businesses that have small business capital must to shut-down their businesses. The decline in the turnover of local retailers also had an effect on the reduced amount of zakah distributed, the reduction of other social contributions such as contributions to the construction of mosques, dayah, and poor people in addition to the amount of tax that also declined.Whereas in the national retail business the positive effect obtained is from tax contributions. The expectation of local retailers to the government in Langsa City is to prioritize the sustainability of local businesses in order to maintain the stability of the people’s economy.

Abstract:
The development of the business world is increasingly rapid, so it needs a special strategy to increase the turnover of the company, in this case the retail company. In increasing the company's turnover can be done using the Data Mining process, one of which is using apriori algorithm. With a priori algorithm can be found association rules which can later be used as patterns of purchasing goods by consumers, this study uses a repository of 209 records consisting of 23 transactions and 164 attributes. From the results of this study, the goods with the name CREAM CUPID HEART COAT HANGER are the products most often purchased by consumers. By knowing the pattern of purchasing goods by consumers, the company management can increase the company's turnover by referring to the results of processing sales transaction data using a priori algorithm

Abstract:
The article is aimed at studying the current state of the retail market of Ukraine, determining its state and development trends. The main factors influencing the change in retail turnover are allocated, namely: purchasing power; state and problems concerning the supply of products; development of material and technical base; institutional transformations; increased competition. On the basis of generalization of characteristics of the modern trading market, its main features and development trends are highlighted, the most important of which are: focusing on improving the service; development of Internet commerce; diversifying the additional services; expanding the list of sales channels; optimization of assortment and reorientation of activities in favor of food products. The main indicators of trade enterprises are analyzed on the basis of data of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine during 2010–2020, namely: the number of economic entities in the market, distributed by size and by organizational-legal form, as well as the volume of products sold under the CEA 47 «Retail Trade»; regional structure of retail turnover (legal entities), structure of products; retail turnover by product groups. It is emphasized that the transformation processes that take place in retail trade relate to both changes in the trading objects themselves and the channels of sale of products. It is defined that the process of globalization in the domestic trade of the country is taking place, accompanied by the widely spread tendency of transition of retail enterprises to the Internet space along with search for platform companies. The need for further support of business on the part of the State, stimulation of its development, taking into account modern requirements, is substantiated. It is emphasized that timely implementation of measures by the owners of retail enterprises will be instrumental in their adaptation to modern market conditions, increasing the competitiveness and efficiency of their activities.

The article focuses on the study of the role of the commodity circulation sphere in the social and economic development of Ukraine and the consequences of modernization of this sector for society and economy. Purpose. The article aims to diagnose positive and negative trends in the development of the commodity circulation sphere in the process of its social and economic modernization. Method (methodology). To achieve the goal, it is carried out the economic assessment of such indicators of the development of the commodity circulation sector as the volume of retail turnover per unit of the existing population; the population's supply of retail space; the retail turnover per one retail trade object; the turnover of goods stocks; labour productivity; number of employees and wages according to the State Statistics Service. The object of the study is the development of the commodity circulation sphere in Ukraine. The subject of the research is the scientific and practical principles of the diagnostics of the commodity circulation sphere in the conditions of its social and economic modernization. Results. It is noted that the efficiency of functioning and development of the commodity circulation sphere in Ukraine is still not on the sufficient level. Such characteristics as retail trade turnover per unit of population in rural areas, rural population's supply of shops, volumes and levels of employment, wages, and in particular its material and immaterial stimulation have to be improved within the social plan. The negative aspects and trends of the social and economic modernization of the commodity circulation sphere in Ukraine, which have been revealed, should be taken into account when planning and implementing a more qualitative, well-balanced and effective state policy in this area.

Abstract:
Retail supermarket chains face high turnover that creates costs and compromises customer satisfaction. Turnover intention is influenced by the fit or misfit of employees to the job and the organization, as well as their satisfaction with the job and the commitment to the organization. This paper investigates the relationship of person-job (P-J) and person-organization (P-O) fit with job satisfaction and organizational commitment. A total of 211 questionnaires from employees in the retail supermarket chains in Kosovo were collected. Regression analysis is used to test the relationships between fit constructs and work attitudes as outcomes and their effect on turnover intention. Bootstrap mediation is used to test the direct and indirect effect of fits on turnover intention. Results show that person-job fit and person-organization fit have a significant positive effect on job satisfaction and organizational commitment. All these constructs have a negative effect on turnover intention. P-J and P-O fit have a direct negative effect on turnover intention, which is also partially mediated by job satisfaction and organizational commitment. This paper supports previous evidence that P-J and P-O fit have a positive effect on work attitudes and eventually reduce turnover intention. The direct effect of fits on turnover intention is stronger than the indirect effect, mediated by job satisfaction and organizational commitment.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of demand uncertainty on inventory turnover performance through empirical modeling. In particular the authors use the inaccuracy of quarterly sales forecasts as a proxy for demand uncertainty and study its impact on firm-level inventory turnover ratios. Design/methodology/approach – The authors use regression analysis to study the effect of various measures on inventory performance. The authors use a sample financial data for 304 publicly listed US retail firms for the 25-year period from 1985 to 2009. Findings – Controlling for the effects of retail segments and year, it is found that inventory turnover is negatively correlated with mean absolute percentage error of quarterly sales forecasts and gross margin and positively correlated with capital intensity and sales surprise. These four variables explain 73.7 percent of the variation across firms and over time and 93.4 percent of the within-firm variation in the data. Practical implications – In addition to conducting an empirical investigation for the sources of variation in a major operational metric, the results in this study can also be used to benchmark a retailer’s inventory performance against its competitors. Originality/value – The authors develop a new proxy to measure the demand uncertainty that a firm faces and show that this measure may help to explain the variation in inventory performance.

Abstract:
Professional articles regarding managerial means to address pharmacist turnover generally focus on policy and psychological dimensions in lieu of relative cost analysis. We present a cost–benefit argument, based on ‘efficiency wage theory’ from the economics literature to reduce the rate of pharmacist turnover in retail establishments and hospitals. Drawing from national pharmacist data, we discuss the rationale for how much management could enhance pharmacist salaries in an organization to cost effectively reduce the turnover rate. We suggest using the approach as an adjunct to existing managerial policies aimed at reducing pharmacist turnover.

Abstract:
The present contribution is aimed at offering evidence of the impact of antiCOVID government actions on trade. Using monthly Eurostat data, it investigates the relationship between the turnover of sales and the adoption of governmental measures. Explanatory variables encompass three indexes measuring the government response, namely, a stringency, a health containment and an economic support index. A consumer confidence index is used as control variable. It has been estimated through a generalised least squares model with heteroskedasticity and autocorrelation. The results outline that the percentage change of the index of deflated turnover of retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco is positively correlated with consumer confidence and negatively correlated with restrictive governmental measures. It is also determined that the percentage change of the index of deflated turnover of retail sale via internet is positively correlated with stringency governmental measures, this confirms the growing importance of internet as channel for trade.

Abstract:
Inventory turnover differs across different retailers and operation modes employed by the retailers. Such a variation while undermining the usefulness of inventory turnover for performance analysis; requires particular attention. We perform an empirical analysis using sales data from a large retail firm for the year 2013-2016 for investigating the relationship of inventory turnover with mode of operations. The analysis reveals that the variation of inventory turnover among different mode of operations is much larger than variation of inventory turnover within each mode. So there is significant relationship between mode of operations and inventory turnover. This study inspects the influence of different channel structures on inventory turnover in a large supermarket, which has employed multiple modes of operations in different categories.

Abstract:
Purpose In today’s retail environment, retailers’ leadership skills can make the difference between the success and failure of their retail stores. Despite the acknowledgment that retailers’ leadership skills and behaviour are important, treatment of the topic within the retail marketing and management literatures is still very limited. Against this backdrop, this paper aims to focus on the relationship between the retailers’ charismatic leadership and frontline employee outcomes. Design/methodology/approach For the purpose of this study, the authors develop hypotheses about the influence of the retailers’ charismatic leadership on frontline employee job satisfaction, self-efficacy, organizational identification and turnover intentions. Using structural equation modelling, hypotheses are tested using a sample of 208 frontline employees from the Finnish retail industry. Findings As a first main contribution, the findings of this study indicate that charismatic leadership has a very strong positive impact on job satisfaction. As a second contribution, this study shows that there is strong positive link between charismatic leadership and the self-efficacy of frontline employees. As a third contribution, this study indicates that charismatic leadership is positively related to organizational identification. And finally, this study indicates that charismatic leadership has a very strong negative impact on employee turnover intentions. Originality/value This study contributes to retail management and services marketing literature by broadening the current understanding of the leadership behaviour of retailers and its effectiveness and demonstrating how frontline employees respond to charismatic leadership in the retail setting.
