Lorente de Nó came to Uppsala, Sweden, in 1924 to work with Robert Bárány, with the goal of studying the central nervous system pathways of the vestibular nystagmus response. Bárány’s 1907 book described a patient with a lesion involving the reticular formation of the pons close to the abducens nucleus who could generate only the slow phase of nystagmus. With stimulation, the patient’s eyes slowly deviated to one side and became pinned. The patient also had a loss of voluntary eye movements. Bárány concluded that there must be separate centers in the brainstem for the production of the slow an

Both copper and iron are essential metals that have a critical function in a series of biochemical pathways. This chapter describes the disorders associated with genetic abnormalities in copper and iron metabolic pathways and their manifestations in adult patients. Mutations in the genes of the copper transporting P-type ATPases, ATP7A and ATP7B are associated with Wilson disease, Menkes disease, occipital horn syndrome and ATP7A-related distal motor neuropathy. Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) is a group of disorders characterized by excess iron deposition in globus palli

Abstract:
Nepenthes is a genus of 130-160 species, almost half of which were described after 2001. The recent, rapid increase in species descriptions has been driven by application of a less rigorous species concept by botanists, taxonomic inflation, and discoveries of new taxa during explorations of remote parts of Southeast Asia. Many recently published species descriptions of Nepenthes are based entirely upon qualitative morphological information and are not supported by adequate research. Accordingly, the status of many Nepenthes taxa is contested. Evolution within the genus is not well understood,

Abstract:
Coma is a pathological state of unconsciousness from which a patient cannot be roused to wakefulness by stimuli, and reflects dysfunction of the brainstem reticular system and its thalamic projections (the neuronal basis of wakefulness), or diffuse injury of both cerebral hemispheres. A unilateral lesion of a cerebral hemisphere (e.g. haemorrhagic stroke) will not cause coma unless there is secondary compression of the contralateral hemisphere or brainstem. Coma is a medical emergency, because a comatose patient is at high risk of permanent brain injury or death, caused either by the underlyin

This chapter looks into the legacy of Santiago Ramón y Cajal. Historians rank Cajal alongside more recognizable names such as Darwin and Pasteur among the greatest biologists of the nineteenth century and Copernicus, Galileo, and Isaac Newton among the greatest scientists of all time. In his final testament to the neuron theory, Neuron Theory or Reticular Theory? Cajal reported to have seen more than a million neurons. Cajal’s drawings of these neurons are much like portraits. “Only true artists are attracted to science,” he once said. Although the majority of his work concerns the nervous sys
