Abstract:
The ‘distant gaze’ is that of the men who went beyond the confused events that reached them from their country among the reticulates or in their workplaces, to regenerate themselves and Italy in generally unfinished projects. Once back in their homes, the day after their liberation or at the end of their life, they turned another gaze to reread, rethink and put in order the many memories of events and people that were still before their eyes. This was a gaze willing to be acknowledged, which now turns to ours, encouraging us to measure the distance that always divides people’ lives, to hold the meanings that dwell in their narratives.

Abstract:
The concept of literary style is joined, on the one hand, with grammatical and prosodic constraints and, on the other hand, with the large-scale dramatic construction of character and action: mimesis. The latter, however, depends on the former. Whereas, dramatic mimesis is an ‘imitation’ or modelling from without, literary style radiates from within the mimetic and lets it appear. We may therefore think of a succession of mimetic styles in Shakespeare’s career which are different modes of bringing character and action to appearance: elevated, articulated, reticulated, saturated, and evacuated.

Abstract:
Both copper and iron are essential metals that have a critical function in a series of biochemical pathways. This chapter describes the disorders associated with genetic abnormalities in copper and iron metabolic pathways and their manifestations in adult patients. Mutations in the genes of the copper transporting P-type ATPases, ATP7A and ATP7B are associated with Wilson disease, Menkes disease, occipital horn syndrome and ATP7A-related distal motor neuropathy. Neurodegeneration with brain iron accumulation (NBIA) is a group of disorders characterized by excess iron deposition in globus pallidus, substantia nigra pars reticulata, striata and cerebellar dentate nuclei. Several genes associated with NBIA have been identified.

Abstract:
Recovering the photographic contexts for Gertrude Stein’s Three Lives at its first publication in North America in 1909, this chapter interprets the text’s formal fragmentation and repetition in terms of the deconstructive syntax of spacing and doubling in Surrealist photography. Just as the Surrealists used the photographic frame to convulse the real, the narrative frame in Stein’s composite text serves to constitute its realist narration as narration and, more specifically, as a typological system of discourse. To be narrated typologically, for the three women in Three Lives, is to be silenced and killed; but Stein also recasts silence and deathly disappearance as a means of resistance, an intransigent acting out of type that is metaphorically reticulated in the blank interstices that separate and bridge her serialized lives.

Clarke, Charles, Jan Schlauer, Jonathan Moran, and Alastair Robinson. Systematics and evolution of Nepenthes. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198779841.003.0005.

Full text
Abstract:
Nepenthes is a genus of 130-160 species, almost half of which were described after 2001. The recent, rapid increase in species descriptions has been driven by application of a less rigorous species concept by botanists, taxonomic inflation, and discoveries of new taxa during explorations of remote parts of Southeast Asia. Many recently published species descriptions of Nepenthes are based entirely upon qualitative morphological information and are not supported by adequate research. Accordingly, the status of many Nepenthes taxa is contested. Evolution within the genus is not well understood, because nuclear and maternally inherited plastid genomes cannot resolve relationships between many species, particularly those that evolved recently through introgression or reticulate evolution. Improvement in our understanding of the systematics and evolution of Nepenthes requires the adoption of ‘best practice’ collection and preservation methods, and the application of quantitative analytical methods for morphological, genetic, and ecological information.

Full text
Abstract:
The anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS) described almost 30 years ago, is now recognized as a major cause of deep vein thrombosis, stroke, and heart attacks in young people (<45 years of age). It is also the commonest treatable cause of recurrent miscarriages and a major cause of late fetal death. Other clinical manifestations are cardiac valvular disease, livedo reticularis, renal thrombotic microangiopathy, thrombocytopenia, haemolytic anaemia, epilepsy, and cognitive impairment. The presence of anti-phospholipid antibodies (aPL) has been closely related to the development of thrombosis and complications in pregnancy. However, not all patients with aPL will develop the clinical features. Lupus anticoagulant is generally thought to be more strongly associated with the risk of clinical manifestations of APS than anticardiolipin and anti ?2-glycoprotein I antibodies. The exact pathogenic mechanisms leading to thrombosis and/or pregnancy morbidity are poorly understood. Therapy of thrombosis is based on long-term oral anti-coagulation and patients with arterial events should be treated aggressively. Obstetric care is based on combined medical-obstetric high-risk management and treatment with aspirin and heparin.

Isbell, R. Australian Soil Classification. CSIRO Publishing, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1071/9781486304646.

Full text
Abstract:
The Australian Soil Classification provides a framework for organising knowledge about Australian soils by allocating soils to classes via a key. Since its publication in 1996, this book has been widely adopted and formally endorsed as the official national system. It has provided a means of communication among scientists and land managers and has proven to be of particular value in land resource survey and research programs, environmental studies and education. Classification is a basic requirement of all science and needs to be periodically revised as knowledge increases. This Second Edition of The Australian Soil Classification includes updates from a working group of the National Committee on Soil and Terrain (NCST), especially in regards to new knowledge about acid sulfate soils (sulfidic materials). Modifications include expanding the classification to incorporate different kinds of sulfidic materials, the introduction of subaqueous soils as well as new Vertosol subgroups, new Hydrosol family criteria and the consistent use of the term reticulate. All soil orders except for Ferrosols and Sodosols are affected by the changes.

Full text
Abstract:
Chlamydial pathogens cause a wide-range of infections and disease, known as chlamydioses, in humans, other mammals and birds. The causative organisms are Gram-negative obligate intracellular bacteria that undergo a unique biphasic developmental cycle involving the infectious elementary body and the metabolically-active, non-infectious reticulate body. At least two species, Chlamydophila psittaci and Chlamydophila abortus, are recognized as causes of zoonotic infections in humans worldwide, mainly affecting persons exposed to infected psittacine and other birds, especially ducks, turkeys, and pigeons, and less commonly to animals, particularly sheep. Outbreaks occur amongst aviary workers, poultry processing workers, and veterinarians. Infection is transmitted through inhalation of infected aerosols contaminated by avian droppings, nasal discharges, or products of ovine gestation or abortion. Person to person transmission is rare. Control strategies have met with variable success depending on the degree of compliance or enforcement of legislation. In the United Kingdom control is secondary, resulting from protection of national poultry flocks by preventing the importation of Newcastle disease virus using quarantine measures. Improved standards of husbandry, transport conditions, and chemoprophylaxis are useful for controlling reactivation of latent avian chlamydial infection. Vaccination has had limited effect in controlling ovine infection. Improved education of persons in occupational risk groups and the requirement for notification may encourage a more energetic approach to its control.
