Abstract:
The concluding chapter summarizes the main arguments advanced in this book. It outlines both the main theoretical arguments developed and the key empirical findings presented in the preceding chapters. These chapters have argued that in processes of translation, two interrelated changes occur as both the meaning of travelling norms and the social and political practices within a given context change. Focusing on the project’s monitoring and evaluation apparatus, this chapter now analyses how the outcomes of the project are retranslated into transnational development discourse. In these retranslations, the ardent work of the local fieldworkers as translators of global norms is systematically ignored. Instead of accounting for complex processes of norm translation, project monitoring and evaluation techniques carefully police the boundaries of transnational policy paradigms. In these paradigms, the decisive work of norm translators is therefore lost in retranslation.

Including exciting new work from leading translation theorists, practicing literary translators, and prominent thinkers from adjoining disciplines such as psychoanalysis and neuroscience, the essays gathered here demonstrate many rich areas of overlap, with translation pedagogy, the fundamental nature of translation, the translator's creativity, retranslation, canon formation, and the geopolitical stakes of literary translation among them.

Abstract:
It is common knowledge that translation and translated literature played an important role in Chinese literature in the first decades of the twentieth century. The lack of resources needed to train individuals in languages such as Russian or even English and French, however, meant that many translations were made by translators who did not know the original language in which a source was written. Two important methods emerged for producing this type of translation: “tandem translation” (duiyi) and relay translation or retranslation (zhuanyi). Through a survey of the translation practices of Lin Shu (1852–1924) and his later rivals, including Zheng Zhenduo (1898–1958) and Mao Dun (1896–1981), this chapter suggests that these practices offer an opportunity to think through not only some of the fundamental questions of translation in modern world literature but also the place of translation in academic scholarship on comparative literature.

Finnish is one of the few existent Finno-Ugric languages, a language without articles, and with only one, genderless word for the pronouns “she” and “he”. Due to this, the problems faced by the Finnish translators of The Second Sex differed in some ways from those discussed after the publication of the new English translation. This chapter describes the genesis of the second, unabridged Finnish translation, the choices made by the translators as well as the philosophical interpretations motivating those choices. In addition, Beauvoir’s way of understanding the concept of becoming is analyzed. The chapter ends with a discussion of the philosophy of translation and of the reception of the second Finnish translation.

Abstract:
The eventful career of the ‘Velesian readings’ constitute an instructive chapter in the history of New Testament exegesis. Around 1570, Pedro Fajardo, Marquis of los Vélez, jotted down some 2,000 variant readings in a printed New Testament, giving later researchers the impression that these annotations resulted from a persistent perusal of Greek manuscripts. The original annotated book was never found, but the Velesian readings found their way into many editions, for example Walton’s 1657 Polyglot. Eventually, the readings were shown to be retranslations from Latin into Greek, intended to vindicate the Latin Vulgate against the received Greek text. This chapter traces the role scholars played in their unmasking. It shows that variant readings were of paramount importance in theological controversy.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the cultural translation of Shakespearean tragedy in Italy as a long and difficult process that took place alongside the equally protracted establishment of the country as a unified state in the nineteenth century. Shakespeare came to Italy initially mediated by translations and critical interpretations made in France and Germany; and to begin with literary debates about his work took precedence over theatrical performances. Reworking Shakespeare for Italian culture meant retranslating Italian plots and materials, as a number of the plays have Italian settings. It also meant dealing with tragedy as a genre (tragedy) that, since Dante’s DivineComedy, had been at best secondary. As well as reviewing the plays’ own performance history, various kinds of adaptation (including opera, music and painting) and the leading role played by actors in promulgating Shakespeare (such as Tommaso Salvini, Eleonora Duse, and Carmelo Bene) are analysed.
