Abstract:
Examining the economic value of education has been a central research agenda of social scientists for decades. However, prior research inadequately accounts for the discrepancy between educational credentials and skills at both the individual and societal levels. In this article, I investigate the link between credentials, skills, and labor market outcomes against a background of societal-level educational expansion and skills diffusion. Using internationally comparable OECD data for approximately 30,000 individuals in 26 countries, I find that both credentials and skills generally contribute to occupational and monetary rewards. In particular, the premium for credentials far outweighs that for skills. This is in contrast to recent arguments that skills are the key to economic success. Nevertheless, returns to credentials decline in tandem with educational expansion, whereas skills retain their premium even as they diffuse in a given society. Furthermore, skills diffusion also leads to the diminishing monetary return to high credentials. These findings suggest that skills diffusion promotes more meritocratic reward allocation via devaluing high credentials without explicit depreciation of high skills.

Abstract:
Though foreign language is widely accepted as an important form of human capital and a factor of economic growth, the labor market outcomes for foreign language skills in developing economies remain understudied. This research explores the returns to different levels of foreign language skills in the Russian labor market and tries do disentangle the differences in return associated with job characteristics. The results indicate positive wage premium for foreign language skills in Russia which approximately equals to 9% when controlling for job-related characteristics. Moreover, wage premium for advanced level of knowledge reaches 24%. However, there is considerable heterogeneity in the economic returns across age groups, levels of education, and occupations. The highest return to foreign language skills is obtained by managers and results to be 13%. For elementary occupations the estimate appears to be insignificant which proves that return to foreign language skills exists only for a limited number of specific jobs.

Abstract This article studies the impact of changing job skills on career earnings dynamics for college graduates. We measure changes in the skill content of occupations between 2007 and 2019 using detailed job descriptions from a near universe of online job postings. We then develop a simple model where the returns to work experience are a race between on-the-job learning and skill obsolescence. Obsolescence lowers the return to experience, flattening the age-earnings profile in faster-changing careers. We show that the earnings premium for college graduates majoring in technology-intensive subjects such as computer science, engineering, and business declines rapidly, and that these graduates sort out of faster-changing occupations as they gain experience.

Abstract:
Abstract The labor market increasingly rewards social skills. Between 1980 and 2012, jobs requiring high levels of social interaction grew by nearly 12 percentage points as a share of the U.S. labor force. Math-intensive but less social jobs—including many STEM occupations—shrank by 3.3 percentage points over the same period. Employment and wage growth were particularly strong for jobs requiring high levels of both math skill and social skills. To understand these patterns, I develop a model of team production where workers “trade tasks” to exploit their comparative advantage. In the model, social skills reduce coordination costs, allowing workers to specialize and work together more efficiently. The model generates predictions about sorting and the relative returns to skill across occupations, which I investigate using data from the NLSY79 and the NLSY97. Using a comparable set of skill measures and covariates across survey waves, I find that the labor market return to social skills was much greater in the 2000s than in the mid-1980s and 1990s.

Abstract:
There have been massive research works done on the concept of market timing and selectivity skills that are applied by the fund managers to optimize the returns to the fundholders/investors/clientele. The fact that still remains unidentified/studied is the factor(s) that are influential enough for the maximization of returns. There is a general perception that investors will only look upon the returns but the very factor that may influence that return is yet to be analyzed. This study focuses on gaining an insight into whether there is any correlation that exists between the fund manager’s selection or/and market timing abilities that, in turn, can be useful to the investors also in finding out which fund and fund manager to be trusted for investment.

Do men and women receive different pay-offs, in terms of wage, from cognitive skills in the Swedish labor market? To answer this, the classical Mincer equation is expanded with a variable for cognitive skills (literacy and numeracy) and an interaction term between being a male and cognitive skills to be able to distinguish the actual difference in pay-off. I use data from OECD’s PIAAC survey of adult skills, which provides a unique opportunity to examine gender pay-off differences concerning cognitive skills. The results show that men have a larger pay-off than women once occupation is sufficiently controlled for

Globally, high unemployment rates exist amongst individuals with schizophrenia. Evidence suggests that these individuals have a desire to return to work (RTW), however, they experience difficulty in finding as well as sustaining employment. Work plays a pivotal role in the functioning of individuals with schizophrenia and has a substantial positive influence on their quality of life (QOL). Several studies recommend supported employment as a practice aimed at improving rates of competitive employment for individuals with schizophrenia. The current study aimed to explore the experiences and perceptions of individuals, with a primary diagnosis of schizophrenia, about the use of the Model of Occupational Self-Efficacy (MOOSE) as a supported employment strategy in enhancing the work skills and facilitating RTW in the open labour market. A qualitative research design was utilised to explore these experiences and perceptions from nine participants. Additionally, one occupational therapist and one occupational therapy technician were selected and participated as key informants of the study. Participants were selected through the use of purposive sampling. Written informed consent was received from the participants, and their confidentiality was upheld throughout the study. Semi-structured interviews were used to collect data, and were audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. Transcriptions were anal

Abstract:
Aim: There are currently few investments that firms do without making any investment calculation. Det därför är ett problem att det idag inte finns något enkelt sätt att kalkylera på en investering i kompetensutveckling inom IT-området . It’s therefore a problem that there is no simple way to calculate on an investment in skills development in the IT field. Studien undersöker därför: The study is examining if: There is a credible way to measure ROI (Return on Investment) on such an investment? How is it done? Is it possible to standardize the way to measure? In addition to ROI estimated Pay-Back are calculated for each group: IT-users, IT-professionals and system developers. Method: The study was conducted as a quantitative study (web survey). ROI was calculated, and other verbal responses discussed. Data are also presented in graph form. Result & Conclusions: ROI is possible to calculate for this type of investment and for the time period of one year ROI is calculated to 87% of IT users, 67% for system designers and 41% of IT professionals. The Pay-Back time is calculated to 0,53 years for IT users, 0,60 years for system designers and 0,71 years for IT professionals. The difference of ROI and Pay-Back for different groups is due to differences in survey responses and the difference in investment size. If ROI is calculated on the median instead of average ROI is lower. There are uncertainties that can not be taken into account in this type of general computing. Suggestions for future research: Repetition of the study together with a comparative study with data collection by other means. Denna studie har endast samlat in data på ett sätt. Contribution of the thesis: The essay should be interesting for organizations working on skills development.

Abstract:
This study analyses the importance of the skills literacy, numeracy and problem solving on employment and earnings. The main focus of this study is particularly if the effects of skills within the groups ‘women’ and ‘foreign born’ differ from the population as a whole. The study compares the results between Sweden and Germany. The method used is multiple linear regression analysis using ordinary least squares.   The results show that skills have a greater importance for an individuals placing in the wage distribution than for whether the individual is employed or not. The effects on wages are all through positive for both countries, but greater for Germany than Sweden – indicating that the return to skills is higher in Germany. The results further show that women’s wages are lower than men’s in both Sweden and Germany, but the gaps are larger in Sweden. There is also some evidence that foreign-born individuals have a harder time entering the Swedish labour market than the German.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of three empirical studies. The first study, Rationales to Language-in-Education Policies in Postcolonial Africa: Towards a Holistic Approach, considers two issues. First, it explores the factors affecting the choice of an LiE policy in 35 African countries. The results show that the countries adopting a unilingual education system put different weights on the influential parameters than countries adopting a bilingual education system. Second, the study investigates how decision makers can ensure the optimal choice of language(s) of instruction by developing a non-cooperative game theoretic model with network externalities. The model shows that it is never optimal for two countries to become bilingual, or for the majority linguistic group to learn the language of the minority group, unless there is minimum cooperation to ensure an equitable redistribution of payoffs. The second study, The Role of Language in Learning Achievement: A Namibian Case Study, investigates the role played by home language and language proficiency on SACMEQ II mathematics scores of Namibian Grade-6 learners. HLM is used to partition the total variance in mathematics achievement into its within- and between-school components. Results show that although home language plays a limited role in explaining within- and between-school variations in mathematics achievement, language proficiency (proxied by reading scores) plays a significant role in the heterogeneity of results. Finally, the third study, Language Skills and Economic Returns, investigates the economic returns to language skills, assuming that language competencies constitute key components of human capital. It presents results from eight IALS countries. The study finds that in each country, skills in a second language are a significant factor that constrains wage opportunities positively.

Abstract:
In this paper, I examine trends in salary inequality from the 1985-86 NBA season to the 2015-16 NBA season. Income and wealth inequality have been extremely important issues recently, which motivated me to analyze inequality in the NBA. I investigated if salary inequality trends in the NBA can be explained by either returns to skill or widening skill distributions. I used Pareto exponents to measure inequality levels and tested to see if the levels changed over the sample. Then, I estimated league-wide returns to skill. I found that returns to skill have not significantly changed, but variance in skill has increased. This result explained some of the variation in salary distributions. This could potentially influence future Collective Bargaining Agreements insofar as it provides an explanation for widening NBA salary distributions as opposed to a judgment whether greater levels of inequality is either good or bad for the NBA.

AbstractRheumatic diseases have many classification criteria and management guidelines that are continuously being updated in order to improve the quality of healthcare provision. With these ever-evolving criteria and guidelines, practicing clinicians need an easy way to get to the core of these updates and to retain them in an easy and memorable way. Classification criteria are meant to differentiate between similar diseases and also to confirm or rule out a certain disease based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The diagnosis of rheumatic diseases can be challenging since many clinical signs and symptoms as well as many laboratory markers are not specific and can be positive in many diseases.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter does not stress the marketisation of higher education rather focuses upon the way in which this is done; the marketingisation of higher education. I do not deny that widening access to skills that can fuel growth is a logical extension of a consumerist ideology. What follows acknowledges these structural changes and then focuses on how marketing is a consequence and reinforce of such structural change. Indeed there is a substantial literature which addresses it (e.g. Molesworth et al. Having, being and higher education: The marketization of the university and the transformation of the student into consumer. Teaching in Higher Education, 14(3), 277–287, 2009; Brown R, Carasso H, Everything for sale? The marketisation of UK higher education. Routledge, London, 2013). Nor does it support that marketingation has brought no or only limited contributions to higher education. The expansion of the privileges of higher education to the many from the few, the greater governance and transparency of the process and practices of higher education institutions in their compact with society and a clearer ways to evaluate these activities have, to varying degrees, enhanced higher education. These interventions have opened the market for world class universities (WCUs) allowing them global as well as local reach. Yet it is strange that these improvements are consequences of market interventions by Governments, by publishers in terms of league tables, and by employers in terms of preferred (mythical?) skill sets and not for educative purposes. The emergent practices encouraged by these interventions increase the influence of marketing and facilitate a metamorphosis of institutions from educational entities to market responsive service providers whose intent focuses on impact and enhanced return on capital. This leads WCUs into the endless and Sisyphusan striving, often devoid of any ultimate worthy end but ends which are an inevitable consequence of managing rapidly increasing competition and shifting demands effectively rather than educative priorities. The chapter describes and discusses the consequences.

Abstract:
Maintenance, especially in a Marine environment, is continuous and costly. Life Cycle Management of a Marine Gas Turbine system encompasses many costs, of which repair parts, labor and equipment downtime associated with failures and maintenance are a significant portion. In fact, people (labor) make up the largest component of overall maintenance costs. Investing in people the largest cost driver to life cycle cost has a direct return in the long run, in terms of maintenance effectiveness and efficiencies. Applying and reinforcing knowledge and skills in a maintenance environment translates to improved reliability outcomes, longer operating time, fewer parts needs, and ultimately costs savings. However, given today’s constrained fiscal environment, the value of spending money for training rather than buying more parts or applying more maintenance, may not appear obvious. Such thinking is short sighted, and ultimately leads to reduced reliability and increased maintenance in the long run. This paper will explore these areas, and recommend how training programs can be effective predictive, proactive and responsive.

Abstract:
The training paths are essentially based on the acquisition of knowledge in which the transmission of knowledge is organized starting and through the acquisition, and capacity for further modulation, of textual or alphanumeric languages. An area of particular intellectual value is however normally recognized and delegated to the activities defined as creative or artistic. The very concept of "vision", typical of the current methodologies of strategic thinking, refers to the ability to communicate through visual interpretive hypotheses, the experience of reality. In Italy a new regulation called "School-Work Alternation" has been introduced in the training courses, for the development of those attitudes of so-called soft-skills in operational and relational responsibility, for a positive outlook in working contexts. The case study of this manuscrippt concernes the students of the Liceo Artistico who forge their attitudes to know how to deal the conceptual mediations between visible and invisible, between visual thinking and concept vision images. The Drawing accompanies the way they look at the world and elaborate a shareable image. These formative features have made their contributions in these experiences particularly interesting and original, not so much for non-profit creative collaborations that they have been able to develop with the Institutions that have welcomed them, but above all for the current image and innovative that they have been able to interpret and return.

Abstract:
Today’s power plant outages are much more time, quality and dollar sensitive than ever before. At $600,000 of lost revenues per calendar day, along with the multi-million dollar outage costs for a 500 MW unit while out of service, today’s owners want to know that everything possible is being done to return their units back on-line, on target. It is the outage manager, working in close concert with his labor force and outside contractors, who is usually charged with making this happen. His job is tough, it’s stressful and in these days of leaner staffs, he needs all of the support he can get. That’s the objective of this paper, to offer him that support and ideas on how to keep those shut-downs on target. In this paper, outage management skills are addressed, from the perspective of the owner and his general contractor as well as from their various contractors’ perspectives. Starting with the initial specification development, the bidding process is reviewed. Then, the structuring of the construction contract is discussed with the objective of devising a win-win document. Properly setting up the site operations and then managing the work within the constraints of the originally defined scope, schedule and budget are reviewed. And finally, specific tools and techniques are introduced to keep the plan in focus. Managing a power plant outage can be a daunting undertaking and if not properly managed, from the conceptual phase right through to the final completion, the outage target dates will never be assured. However, this paper shows that if properly structured and properly managed, a very successful project can result.

Abstract:
This study seeks to examine the impact that the field of study of workers in Trinidad and Tobago is likely to have on their earning capacity. Using individual persons’ data from the Continuous Sample Survey of the Population (CSSP), for the period 1991-2015, the returns of private and public sector workers were estimated by estimating a Mincerian Earnings function using the Quantile Regression technique. This study finds that men employed in low- and middle-income jobs for most fields (arts, humanities, science, engineering and architecture, social science, business, law, and mathematics and computer science and law enforcement) all suffered a wage decline in 2004-2015. This may be due to changes in the skill set where there was much growth in the industry demand for highly-skilled and unskilled men. This implies that middle income jobs which hire semi-skilled men, may be possibly becoming more polarized during the 2009-2015 recession. Men employed in high income jobs, earn better wages in more fields, particularly STEM areas. The earnings of women employed in low, middle- and high-income jobs for most fields, especially in the areas of STEM all improved in 2004-2015. This is likely to be the result of the rising participation of women in STEM fields, and a greater integration of STEM competencies in STEM and Non-STEM occupations.

Abstract:
There is typically a project in the course of “Mechanism Design” or “Kinematics of Machines”. The purpose of the course project is to apply analysis and synthesis theories to practical mechanisms, strengthen the understanding of theories, improve analysis and synthesis skills of mechanisms, and prepare students to cope with practical engineering problems in industry. The real testing of mechanisms is often missing in the project because of the limited project time and the lacking of a simple and effective testing device. This paper introduces a simple, effective and efficient approach to measure the motion parameters of the analyzed or synthesized mechanisms for the course project. The Calculator Based Ranger (CBR™) System is used to measure motion parameters of mechanisms. The CBR™ system includes a sonic motion detector with a built-in microprocessor, a graphing calculator and some connecting cables. The CBR™ system sends out an ultrasonic pulse and then measures the time it takes for that pulse to return after bouncing off the closest object. When the data is collected, the CBR™ system calculates the distance of the object from the sonic motion detector using a speed-of-sound calculation, and then computes the first and second derivatives of the distance data with respect to time to obtain the velocity and acceleration data. Students first design and analyze the mechanisms. The mechanism performance is analyzed and the output link position, velocity and acceleration plots are generated by Matlab. Pro Engineer or AutoCAD is used for mechanism geometric modeling. The designed mechanisms are then fabricated in the department machine shop by the students. The output motion parameters of the fabricated mechanisms are measured by the CBR™ system. The measured output motion parameters are compared with the analysis results to improve the fabrication precision and measurement accuracy. In this paper, the scotch yoke mechanism is used to show the motion parameter measurement process. Students get hands on experience about the analysis, synthesis, fabrication, and testing of mechanical systems when the CBR™ system is incorporated with the course project.

Biggs, Simon, Michael Fairweather, James Young, Neil Hyatt, and Francis Livens. "The DIAMOND University Research Consortium: Nuclear Waste Characterisation, Immobilisation and Storage." In ASME 2009 12th International Conference on Environmental Remediation and Radioactive Waste Management. ASMEDC, 2009. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icem2009-16374.

Full text
Abstract:
Legacy waste treatment, storage and disposal, as well as decommissioning and site remediation, from the UK’s civil nuclear programme are estimated at a cost of £70B. Within the UK, the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) directs the strategy for all civil nuclear decommissioning and demanding timescales have been set for remediation of all nuclear sites. Additionally, the Committee on Radioactive Waste Management (CoRWM) recently delivered a recommendation, accepted by Government, that geological disposal in a mined repository presents the “best available approach” for long term management of the waste legacy. There is therefore a requirement to decommission all power generation and experimental reactors, and fuel reprocessing plants, to decontaminate land, and to return nuclear licensed sites to brown or green field status. The engineering and scientific challenges that lie ahead in meeting these targets are significant, and many of the ideas required to deliver the final end state have not yet been researched. In recognition of this the UK Research Council’s Energy Programme released a call for research proposals in the area of nuclear waste management and decommissioning valued at £4M. A grant was subsequently awarded in 2008 to a consortium led by the University of Leeds, with member universities from Manchester, Imperial College, Sheffield, Loughborough and University College London. The DIAMOND (Decommissioning, Immobilisation And Management Of Nuclear Wastes For Disposal) consortium will undertake research aligned with the strategic priorities of the NDA and the CoRWM recommendations. Its primary purpose is to be adventurous and to deliver innovation. However, research is also being performed that will be of more immediate benefit to industrial stakeholders, with near-term impact achieved through the adoption of off-the-shelf technology currently implemented by other industries. Currently more than 20 industrial organisations are linked directly to the consortium. The aims of the consortium are to carry out internationally leading research in the areas of decommissioning and waste management that underpins the development of innovative and relevant technologies for industrial use. It will broaden the research base that focuses on relevant technologies, support new links within and between universities, promote multi-disciplinary collaboration and new applications of existing knowledge, and train the next generation of researchers to address a developing skills gap.

Abstract:
“Education´s goal is the ability to master life with self-creative forces, in order to achieve something good and beautiful.” Götze, C. (1898). Das kind als Künstler Projects at Mexican schools of architecture often focus on conventional issues of dimension and function; in a country with the largest number of students in the architectural discipline there is an existing disinterest in the appropriation of knowledge, exploration of complexity, and expression of ideas. Such a disinterest calls for the evolution of architectural education. This research proposes it is possible to manage the creative forces of individuals. A working model composed of distinct components will be generated to stimulate areas related to artistic development. In preparation, essential components of the model have been extracted by analysis from the Bauhaus Preliminary Course developed by Johannes Itten, considering its influence on sequential tutors as well as its moment of historic implementation (1918-1923). The objective is to transform Itten´s pedagogy by means of a systemic design process focusing on the development of creative skills. The first methodological approach has been extracted from three of Itten’s thematic fields, each structured by a set of common elements: principle, objective, common material, exercises, and phases (Fig. 1). The sets are related according to their role in the development of talent as a means to discern and reveal artistic character: - BEING UNDER CONSTRUCTION: A physical-soul-spiritual unity that incorporates artistic education through exercises for awakening the body and intellectual harmonization (Fig. 1a). - BALANCED COMPOSITION: Refinement of the senses through intuitive analysis of artistic structures and a critical drawing of reality (Fig. 1b). - CONTRAST: The art of objectivity through the study of opposites: feeling-thinking, intuition-intellect, expression-construction (Fig. 1c). A responsible party, acting as structural element, directs the capacities stimulated within the group and materialized by cohesive exercises, guiding students to define an authentic trajectory: - FAMILIARIZATION: Understanding the bases. - EXPERIMENTATION: Articulation of new configurations. - APPROPRIATION: Creation from the unknown. - OPERATION: Execution in real-time. - REDIRECTION: Return to the origin to adjust and resume. By asserting the student is the center of his or her unique working model the implementation of this method in architectural studios allows for the assignment of any creative exercise and is suitable for all levels of investigation.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.4995/IFDP.2016.3644

Abstract:
Additive Manufacturing (AM) is a revolutionary technology in the manufacturing sector, although it has yet to become a cornerstone of formal engineering education. This paper discusses the procedure, result, and impact of incorporating physical prototyping, design iteration, and Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) in a first-year, first-semester technical drawing and CAD course. In the course, students design balloon powered model car assemblies and are expected to learn core concepts of engineering design, such as modeling, assemblies, and tolerancing. The course consists of 473 students that each design up to two unique model cars. These model cars are fabricated using AM from these CAD designs and returned to students for assembly. Surveys are given to students to empirically validate the usefulness of incorporating AM in the course, with regards to motivating students and improving their ability to accurately translate imagined designs from CAD to physical products. The results show improvement in student intrinsic motivation concerning CAD processes. Student design abilities are also assessed: when student designs do not function as intended, it corresponds with a greater mismatch in how they imagine their CAD design in comparison to its final physical assembly. The mismatch on average decreases for students who design a second model car, which suggests an improvement in design skills. As a whole, our findings demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of including AM in a first-year course, particularly with respect to improving student motivation and their development of key CAD-related skills. Such motivation and skill development is particularly important early in an engineer’s career as it can impact their potential to learn and design over the course of their budding career.
