Abstract:
We studied distribution pattern of the epiphytic orchid Rhynchostylis retusa (L.) Blume with respect to (i) site characteristics and host conditions, and (ii) the type and intensity of land use in Kathmandu Valley, central Nepal. We established a 1.5 km grid net and analyzed epiphytic orchids at each point, searching for 10 trees as close as possible to the grid point. There we analyzed bark water-holding capacity, bark pH, bark roughness and light intensity. We assessed the probability of the occurrence of R. retusa in different land use patterns. ABSTRACT Eustachys retusa has low sensitivity to glyphosate at the reproductive stage. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of glyphosate on adult E. retusa plants in order to identify the traits that make possible their regeneration in no-tillage systems. For this purpose, reproductive-stage specimens from wild populations were treated with glyphosate at two different rates (480 and 1,200 g a.i. ha-1) including a non-treated control. Results demonstrated that glyphosate could control E. retusa plants at reproductive stage at 1,200 g a.i. ha-1 dose. However, a certain proportion

In urban forestry plantations are implemented in different cities of the world for social and environmental benefits. Bauhinia retusa and Bauhinia variegata are important species and to be used as large-scale plantation programs in urban forestry which might solve or mitigate urban, social, and environmental issues such as improving the physical & mental health of residents, food and nutrition security, increasing urban biodiversity, cooling the neighboring, preventing soil erosion, flooding, and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution. The aim of this study was to determine the duration of the resistance after the end of the ingestion of non-toxic doses of Crotalaria retusa seeds. Ten sheep were divided into 3 groups of 3 animals each and a control group with 1 sheep. To induce resistance, sheep in groups 1, 2 and 3 received 20 daily doses of 2g kg-1 of C. retusa seeds, followed by 7 daily doses of 4g kg-1. To determine the duration of resistance the sheep in groups 1, 2 and 3 were challenged orally, 3, 7 and 15 days, respectively, after receiving the last dose of 4g kg-1, with a single dose of 5g kg-1. Abstract BACKGROUND: Crotalaria retusa L. belongs to the Fabaceae family and is found in tropical and subtropical regions of the globe. In Ayurveda, its roots are used against hemoptysis. The roots of C. retusa are used in folklore medicine in many countries for the treatment of numerous diseases. Roots are used against fever, cough, dyspepsia, cardiac disorders, stomatitis, diarrhea, scabies, impetigo, and several other disorders. But so far, the pharmacognostical and phytochemical standardization of root has not been reported for proper identification. Hence, the present study was carried ou

Drought conditions may have differential impacts on growth, transpiration, and water use efficiency (WUE) in mixed species and monospecific planted forests. Understanding the resistance (i.e., the capacity to maintain processes unchanged) of different tree species to drought, and how resistance is affected by complementary interactions within species mixtures, is particularly important in the seasonally dry tropics where projected increases in the frequency and severity of drought threaten tree planting efforts and water resources. Complementary interactions between species may lead to more re

Abstract:
Atalantia retusa Merr. is a rare Philippine endemic shrub which was reported to exhibit high antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities. The dichloromethane extract of the air-dried leaves of A. retusa afforded a new triterpene, retusenol (1), and friedelin (2), dischidiol (3), 5,7-dimethoxy-8- (3-methyl-2-oxybutyl)coumarin (4), humulene (5), and β-caryophyllene (6). The structures of 1 - 4 were elucidated by extensive 1D and 2D NMR experiments. Friedelin, a known analgesic and antiinflammatory drug, is an active principle of the shrub. Compounds 1 - 4 were tested for cytotoxicity agains
