Farrugia, Kathrina. "Transmodern dance practices : Angelin Preljocaj, Mauro Bigonzetti and revisions of Les Noces (1923)." Thesis, London Metropolitan University, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.573408.

Abstract:
In this thesis, I examine the current state of choreographic postmodernism in the wake of recent theories of transmodernism in film and literature studies. Moving from an analysis of revisionist choreographic practices, my aim is to retrace the unwritten histories of particular revisions of Bronislava Nijinska's Les Noces (1923), namely those by Angelin Preljocaj and Mauro Bigonzetti. Whilst their syntactical organisation of choreographic vernacular and thematic treatment of the subject matter, mise-en-scene and choreographic form differ, Preljocaj and Bigonzetti share a common interest, namely their engagement with the choreographic legacies of the artistic migration in their indigenous context and their interest in revising artistic, cultural and narrative artefacts including the Ballets Russes repertoire (1909-1929). Through the analyses of their creative practices and their revisions of Les Noces, I situate the parameters and extensions of the postmodern genre against newer theories of transmodernism that align themselves more readily to the choreographic interest in tracing established histories and practices. The theoretical developments of transmodernism in dance impact two significant areas: firstly, understanding of notions of border-crossing and artistic alterity from existing choreographic legacies, and secondly, revisions of ballet histories associated with works of historical significance. The study suggests choreographic revisionism as transmodern dance practices, where the weight of existing performance histories is re-organised and reconfigured into multidimensional and non-linear identities. The three parts of this thesis are organised in the following way. The first part provides a theoretical context for revisions of Les Noces (1923) as well as a theoretical underpinning to the theories of revisionism and transmodernism. In the second part, at the core of the enquiry, I trace recent dance histories through the choreographic works created by Preljocaj (1985-2010) and Bigonzetti (1990-2010) and their revisions of Les Noces. In the third and final part, the research draws on analyses of Noces (1989) and Les Noces (2002) to facilitate an application of a theorisation of transmodernism in dance and its potential to further the field of dance studies

Abstract:

Groups of taxa of the polychaete family Nereididae were studied with the aim of presenting a revision of the subfamily Nereidinae. Detailed description of characters starting with a selected group, Neanthes, was extended to include a wider range of species level taxa to include as much variation in morphological characters as possible. Description of morphological characters and taxa were systematised in a database of Nereididae using the DELTA (DEscription Language for TAxonomy) system. Based on this database an interactive key of selected taxa is presented. A dataset of 86 characters for 51 taxa were analysed with parsimony methods to test if heterogeneous large genera like Nereis, Neanthes, Ceratonereis and Perinereis were natural groups, and to revise genera in Nereidinae. Although the analyses due to large amounts of homoplasies failed to give results that a complete revision of genera could be provided, they showed that the large genera are not monophyletic groups, and that previous attempts to group species into informal groups based on morphological characters not always are supported. The ingroup could not be grouped as monophyletic, hence suggesting Nereidinae is not a natural group. The results and levels of homoplasy made it impossible to undertake further analyses and provide a revision as such of Nereidinae. Cladistic analyses of a resulting clade from the consensus Nereidinae tree verified the monophyly of Pseudonereis including all 11 taxa considered valid, and a revision of the group including redescriptions of all taxa based on type material could be done.

Paper III: The definitive version is available at www.blackwell-synergy.com

Abstract:
27/12/2019

Abstract:
Macrobuninae Petrunkevitch is revised and submitted to a cladistic analysis. Macrobuninae, once considered the biggest Amaurobiidae Thorell subfamily is now proved to be not even closely related to Amaurobiinae, the \"true amaurobiids\". Our matrix, composed by 82 terminal taxa and 107 characters, includes representatives of all Macrobuninae genera and new taxa we believed to be part of Macrobuninae. As out-groups, we included representatives of the families Agelenidae Koch, Amaurobiidae, Amphinectidae Forster & Wilton, Chummidae Jocqué, Desidae Pocock, Dictynidae O. P.-Cambridge, Phyxelididae Lehtinen, Stiphidiidae Dalmas, Tengellidae Dahl, Titanoecidae Lehtinen, Zorocratidae Dahl and Zoropsidae Bertkau, which were suggested as related to Macrobuninae by previous studies. Our main results confirm Macrobuninae as not forming a monophyletic group with Amaurobiidae and shows the need to erect Macrobunidae Petrunkevitch, 1928 new rank to include Macrobuninae and relatives. Three other subfamilies are proposed here: Retirinae subfam. nov., Pakehinae subfam. nov., and Zanomyinae Ubick, 2005 new rank. Chummidae, currently composed by one genus and two species, is considered a junior-synonym with Macrobunidae. Amaurobiidae appears as sister group of the \"Oval Calamistrum Clade\" and the \"Fused Paracribellar clade\". The subfamily Macrobuninae is revised at the generic-level and redelimited to include a total of 26 genera. Of those, thirteen are newly described: Siyabonga gen. nov., Peckmaria gen. nov., Ijoubetumsam gen. nov., Imbumbulu gen. nov., Ibhulashi gen. nov., Umunwe gen. nov., Pigozzoi gen. nov., Samadhia gen. nov., Naynay gen. nov., Segoko gen. nov., Deusemais gen. nov., Madiba gen. nov. and Ushaka gen nov.. The remaining known genera are redescribed including their type-species, except the ones with recent, up to date descriptions. Seventeen new species are described: Emmenomma joshuabelli sp. nov., Macrobunus alejandrosanzi, sp. nov., Macrobunus eniomattosi sp. nov., Yupanquia lenktaitisi sp. nov., Ijoubetumsam frizzellae sp. nov., Deusemais viximaria sp. nov., Naynay meikleae sp. nov., Pigozzoi pifozonho sp. nov., Samadhia kellyfujiharae sp. nov., Siyabonga kakhulu sp. nov., Imbumbulu westhuizenis sp. nov., Madiba haddadi sp. nov., Ushaka umsila sp. nov., Ushaka philai sp. nov., Ibhulashi lakeside sp. nov., Umunwe ndabae sp. nov. and Segoko chueneorum sp. nov. Eight genera removed from Macrobuninae are assigned to other subfamilies and/or families. All taxonomic changes are justified by the phylogenetic analysis. For the first time the male specimens of Hicanodon Tullgren, Yupanquia Lehtinen and Chresiona Simon are described; Anisacate fuegianum bransfield Usher is raised to the species level, A. bransfield Usher new rank; Emmenomma beauchenicum Usher is considered junior synonym of E. oculatum Simon; Emmenomma oculatum obscurum Simon is removed from the synonym with E. oculatum and raised to the species level, Emmenomma obscurum Simon new rank. The type specimens of Macrobunus backhauseni (Simon) are considered non co-specifics and a new species Macrobunus alejandrosanzi sp. nov. is described based on the female. The true female of M. backhauseni is described for the first time. Other taxonomic changes include: removal of Notolathys Mello-Leitão from synonymy with Auximella Strand and placement as a junior synonym of Retiro Mello-Leitão; to consider Urepus Roth a junior synonym of Auximella; and Tymbira Mello-Leitão a junior synonym of Metaltella Mello-Leitão
Destes, treze gêneros novos são descritos: Siyabonga gen . nov., Peckmaria gen. nov., Ijoubetumsam gen. nov., Imbumbulu gen. nov., Ibhulashi gen. nov., Umunwe gen. nov., Pigozzoi gen. nov., Samadhia gen. nov., Naynay gen. nov., Segoko gen. nov., Deusemais gen. nov., Madiba gen. nov. and Ushaka gen nov.. Dezessete espécies novas são descritas: Emmenomma joshuabelli sp. nov., Macrobunus alejandrosanzi, sp. nov., Macrobunus eniomattosi sp. nov., Yupanquia lenktaitisi sp. nov., Ijoubetumsam frizzellae sp. nov., Deusemais viximaria sp. nov., Naynay meikleae sp. nov., Pigozzoi pifozonho sp. nov., Samadhia kellyfujiharae sp. nov., Siyabonga kakhulu sp. nov., Imbumbulu westhuizenis sp. nov., Madiba haddadi sp. nov., Ushaka umsila sp. nov., Ushaka philai sp. nov., Ibhulashi lakeside sp. nov., Umunwe ndabae sp. nov. e Segoko chueneorum sp. nov..

Abstract: The purpose of this thesis is to demonstrate the hypothesis that central categories present in Prison Notebooks come from the critical assimilation of concepts developed by Georges Sorel, in a personal trajectory in which the French thinker was involved in the revisionist production of his time, in direct or indirect dialogue with her. We consider the categories of "historical block", "myth" and "class scission" as emblematic. Furthermore, are the most acute representatives of revisionist thinking in Europe the "vanguard of the opponent's thought", which fulfilled the call in defiance to assimilating their more elaborate moments, overcome it critically conferring a new force to the philosophy of praxis. This is assumed to be a persecuted way in the Prison Notebooks. We will point out and discuss the moments of critical assimilation and appropriation by Gramsci of the revisionist thinking represented, above all, by Georges Sorel. Before that, however, we will follow the constitution of that thought, since their best-known moments, from Germany, through its most important expressions in France and in Italy for, after we understand historically its "marginal" context (i.e. outside of Germany), we can achieve the debate that we consider in a more central point of view, which is Georges Sorel in Cadernos do Cárcere as an important depository of revisionist inheritance
Doutorado
Teoria Política
Doutor em Ciência Política

Abstract:
No presente estudo Astyanacinus é revisado e redescrito. Peru e Astyanacinus sp n. Purus. A distribuição do gênero é extremamente expandida alcançando a Bacia do Alto Paraguai (A. moorii), Alto Madeira (A. multidens, A. sp n. Bolívia e A. sp n. Peru), Purus (A. sp n. Purus e A. multidens.
The genus Astyanacinus was described by Eigenmann (1907) in order to reallocate Tetragonopterus moorii Boulenger (1892). In the present study Astyanacinus is reviewed and redescribed. Based on the taxonomic revision involving 21 morphometric measurements and 13 meristic counts, Astyanacinus is redefined and is composed by seven species, including three new forms. Astyanacinus moorii and Astyanacinus multidens are recognized as valid species; Astyanax orthodus and Astyanax superbus are re-allocated on Astyanacinus; Astyanacinus goyanensis and Astyanacinus platensis are recognized, respectively, as belonging to Astyanax and Oligosarcus; three new species are described: Astyanacinus sp n. Bolívia, Astyanacinus sp n. Peru and Astyanacinus sp n. Purus. The distribution are of the genus is extremely enlarged reaching the Upper Paraguay basin (A. moorii), Upper-Madeira Basin (A. multidens, A. sp n. Bolivia and A. sp n. Peru), Purus basin (A. sp n. Purus), Orinoco basin (Astyanax superbus) and Cis-andin Patia and Atrato basins (Astyanax orthodus). The phylogenetic analysis including 47 taxa and 136 morphological characters hypothesizes the genus as a monophyletic unit based on the sharing of six sinapomorphies: enlargement of mandible, three teeth on maxilla, posterior tip of maxilla outreaching the vertical which passes from the wing of the lateral ethmoid, first proximal radial from the anal fin dorsally directed, postcleithrum 1 and 2 near each other (space between them smaller than the greatest deep from the postcleithrum 1), presence of chevron-like marks. Only A. moorii, Astyanax orthodus, Astyanax superbus, Astyanacinus sp n. Bolívia and Astyanacinus sp n. Peru were dissected and included in the present study, since no available material from Astyanacinus sp n. Purus and A. multidens is founded. A. multidens was partially included in the phylogenetic analyses based on the exam of radiographs and causes low resolution concerning the phylogenetic relationships of Astyanacinus with other characids. The genus is hypothesized as sister-group of Astyanax or could be related with a clade composed by Oligosarcus, Hollandichthys and Rachoviscus, thus the position of the genus is still undefined, pending more studies and additional available material from A. sp n. Purus and A. multidens. According to the phylogenetic results A. sp n. Bolívia is the sister-group from the remaining Astyanacinus species examined based on the sharing of, for example, presence of bony hooks on pelvic and anal fins of adult males. Regarding the biogeography of the group, some geological patterns were hypothesized as responsible for the cladogenetic events of the genus. The distribution of A. moorii on the Upper Paraguay basin can be a result of faunistic exchanges occurred between the headwaters of the Upper Madeira and Upper Paraguay through the influence of a putative dispersal route dating about 10 m.a.. The presence of a Cis-Andin species provides a minimum age for the genus which has evolved, at least, before 12 m.a. (the date of formation of the northwest Cordillera). The distribution pattern of Astyanax orthodus on Central America is explained by the emergence of Isthmus of Panama in the Pliocene (3 m.a.) which formed the terrestrial connection between Central and South America and provides a dispersal route for the species. The presence of Astyanax orthodus in the Orinoco basin can be explained as a result of the ancient connection between Paleo-Amazonas-Orinoco which was separated with the formation of the Vaupes Arch between 8-5 m.a. Additionally, the present study provides the first record of bony hooks on pelvic and anal fins of adult males of the genus Astyanacinus.

Abstract:
Balgus Fleutiaux 1920 currently has nine species: B. tuberculosus (Dalman, 1823); B. eganensis (Bonvouloir, 1875); B. humilis (Bonvouloir, 1875); B. obconicus (Bonvouloir, 1875); B. subfasciatus (Bonvouloir, 1875); B. albofasciatus (Bonvouloir, 1875); B. eschscholtzi (Laporte, 1835); B. rugosus (Blanchard, 1843) and B. schnusei (Heller, 1914), further one subespecies. Species of this genus can be easily distinguished from species of other genera of Thylacosterninae by the presence of tubercles in pronotal disk. This study aimed to: the taxonomic revision of the genus; and the phylogenetic reconstruction of the genus, based on morphological and molecular characters. The examination of type material of two species, B. tuberculosus and B. rugosus was performed. Only one species, B. subfasciatus (Bonvouloir, 1875), was not analyzed. The extractions of rDNA 16S were performed using a protocol adapted from Gilbert et al. (2007) for samples preserved in a dry route. Data were analyzed using the maximum aarsimony (MP) and by bayesian inference (BI). The final version of the character matrix contains 55 characters. For BI with morphological data, the model Mkv was used for morphological discrete data with a distribution rate Gamma (). In the case of molecular data, we used the method of Tree alignment (dynamic homology). The Balgus genus was redescribed, as well as all species of the genus which were analyzed. All species remained valid and the subspecies B. schnusei cayennensis Chassain, 2003 are now invalid. A classification key to all species of the genus was generated. The preferred cladogram was generated by MP with morphology due to the fact that it was the most well-resolved cladogram: (Lissomus(C. mutabilis(P. bimaculatus((B. obconicus(B. humilis+B. schnusei))(B. eganensis(B. tuberculosus(B. eschscholtzi(B. albofasciatus+B. rugosus)))))))). New taxonomic studies, aimed B. subfasciatus (Bonvouloir, 1875), are necessary, new characters must be sampled and especially new genes must be sequenced for non-sampled species as well as for those which were already sampled.

Abstract:
A revision and a phylogenetic analysis of the genera Zelomorpha Ashmead, 1900 and Hemichoma Enderlein, 1920 were conducted. Phylogenetic analyses used molecular and morphological data. A total of 39 sequences were obtained for COI (887 bases long) and 57 for 28S (1254 bases long). DNA sequences were aligned manually and also aligned with ClustalW (Thompson et al. 1997). Parsimony, Maximum Likelihood, and Bayesian approaches were applied to phylogenetic analyses with each gene region analyzed separately and in a combined analysis. The phylogenetic analysis analyses supported the monophyletic status of the genera Zelomorpha, as defined by Sharkey et al. (2006), and Hemichoma; they upholdseld the hypothesis that the the New World species formerly placed in Biroia belonged to Zelomorpha, and corroborated the synonomy ofgenus Dichelosus with Zelomorpha (Sarmiento and Sharkey, 2005). A total of 3,242 specimens of Hemichoma and Zelomorpha collected through the New World representing 113 species were examined. In addition to the 29 species of Zelomorpha described originally in diverse genera and now moved into the Zelomorpha, 74 new species are described. Seven new species are described for the genus Hemichoma for a total of 10 species. All species are fully redescribed. Fully illustrated keys to the species of Zelomorpha and Hemichoma are provided. The phylogenetic results based on maximum parsimony suggest that, despite the colorful nature of the sister group Hemichoma, species of Zelomorpha were nocturnal and became diurnal secondarily in one lineage. The change to diurnality is linked to a decrease in eye size, to an increase in body size, and to the emergence of colorful patterns. Palatability field tests using lizards as predators of Zelomorpha concinna, a common species with one of the more characteristic and bright color patterns, suggest that the coloration has a warning function and that this wasp is highly unpalatable. Evidence was found that the short ventrally curved ovipositor is an effective defensive structure. Abstract:
N/A

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study examines what Busoni meant by "formal deficiencies" when he described his 1884 version of Chopin Variations, and reveals that changes made to the 1884 version during its process of revision in 1922 correct the "formal deficiencies" and show a fundamental change in Busoni's compositional style and perception of musical motion. Including a detailed analysis of the modifications, omissions, and additions made to the 1922 version (including an examination of the Chopin Prelude in C minor, op. 28, No. 20 as a theme to reveal aspects of its construction used in the variation process), which shows how these changes affect the work's compositional structure.

Abstract:
Abstract:

Stevens, Jennifer. "Faith, fiction and the historical Jesus : theological revisionism and its influence on fictional representations of the Gospels (c. 1860-1920)." Thesis, University of London, 2006. http://sas-space.sas.ac.uk/355/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the stimulus and influence of studies of the historical Jesus on literary depictions of Christ. It examines imaginative reconstructions of the Gospels, alongside significant works of Biblical scholarship, and seeks to establish the role played by fiction in promulgating ideas of the Higher Criticism in Britain. At the same time, it considers how far the demands of working with a sacred source encouraged or restricted literary innovation. The contextual aspects of the study underline how advances in disciplines such as psychology, anatomy, and archaeology informed writers’ conceptions of the New Testament. The Introduction traces changing perceptions of the relationship between fiction and faith in the light of contemporary developments in Biblical interpretation. Chapter One examines a representative selection of Lives of Jesus, looking specifically at their affinities with fiction. The following chapter explores the kind of prose-fiction writing that developed in response to these Lives and to theological revisionism generally. The second part of the thesis focuses on two Anglo-Irish writers: Oscar Wilde and George Moore. Their transformations of the Gospels are analysed in the context of some of their other literary works, their attitudes to Christianity, and their engagement with theology. Chapter Three considers Wilde’s New Testament oral tales, looking especially at their treatment of current theological debates. Chapter Four considers the reappearance of these tales in the writings of Wilde’s contemporaries, and links the study’s two major authors through its discussion of Frank Harris, an acquaintance of them both. The final two chapters deal with Moore’s abiding interest in the religious temperament, following through the development of his drama, The Apostle, into the novel, The Brook Kerith. The Conclusion considers the aesthetics of Biblical fiction and its contribution to the religious discourses of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Abstract:
This dissertation investigates the negotiation of history within the history textbook revision conducted by the Norden Associations between 1919 and 1972. The thesis combines an examination of the discussions surrounding the revision with an understanding of the organization of the revision process to study the negotiations between representatives of different historical cultures and the conditions within these historical cultures. At the end of World War I, the teaching of history was challenged by internationalists and schoolteachers as a chauvinistic and warmongering subject. The war was a catalyst for the emergence of history textbook revisions in general, and in the Nordic countries the war also became a catalyst for efforts to promote Nordic understanding and cooperation. These two outcomes of the war experience merged in the Norden Associations’ history textbook revision. The revision was promoted as both an effort to reach an agreement on a common Nordic history and an effort to present to the international community a peaceful corner of the world. The theoretical framework of this dissertation draws on the concept of the nation as an imagined community and sees national historical cultures as being reflective of the community at that time and place. The discussions of historical events in the thesis are treated as motifs of a national myth, and they are scrutinized as part of the cognitive, political, and aesthetic dimensions of historical culture. The organizational features of the revision are studied through a network analysis of the organizational field. Prior to World War II, involvement in the revision was reserved almost exclusively for historians. From the end of the 1950s, however, the initiative shifted towards teachers and teacher trainers. This dissertation shows that the revision was organized with an emphasis on national boundaries even though the revision itself was an effort to transcend these boundaries. The results of this thesis show that the history within the revision was such an integral part of national identity that it was almost impossible to reach any understanding of a common Nordic history. Most motifs, such as the nation’s founding, liberation, golden age, and decline, within the individual national myths had very little common ground and they often contradicted each other. The debates in regards to historical events were also highly political. The historians involved in the revision process could not see past their own national context and were not able to approach the subject from a purely methodological or scientific stance. Pedagogical issues in the textbooks were almost completely ignored. In conclusion, the history textbook revision conducted by the Norden Associations should probably be seen as a defense of nationalistic hegemony in the understanding of history and cultural identity instead of as a challenge to that hegemony. In addition, the decline in impact of the textbook revision in the 1960s can be explained as a result of this nationalistic identity giving way to the prosperity of a new hegemony that was more liberal, Eurocentric, and global.
Historia utan gräns: Den internationella historieboksrevisionen 1919-2009

Full text
Abstract:
Tesis

Abstract:

Abstract:
In the mid-1970s, state courts began to interpret state constitutions independently of the federal constitution in a way that provided greater protection for individual rights at the state versus federal level. Scholars have generally attributed the rise of this movement, known as state constitutionalism, to the actions and scholarship of judges and point to the cause as a fear that the Burger court would rollback Warren court era protections for individual rights. In reality, the concept of state constitutionalism had been present throughout the 1950s-1970s period of state constitutional revision and was deeply influenced by concerns over the status of the federal system. Montana's 1972 Constitutional Convention illustrates the role that constitutional revision had in the subsequent adoption of state constitutionalism. In particular, the creation, adoption, and interpretation of two provisions--the privacy and dignity clauses--shows that the public was engaged in a conscious decision to go beyond the federal protections for individual rights. Montana's experience suggests that further research is needed in order for scholars to fully understand the rise and adoption of state constitutionalism.

Abstract:
Slavery is the chronotope of "Tituba" by M. Condé and "Beloved" by T. Morrison. Slavery is a paradigmatic heritage in other novels by these authors, as well as in Alice Walker's and Gisèle Pineau's art ; it determines the contemporary racial relationships. The splitting up of the slave's body calls to mind the pattern of sewing, narrative weaving, re-membering of the social body, and reinventing a traditionally feminine work. The highlighting of performative power of the master's words reminds us the historicity and the politic aspect of the invention of racism in the plantation system. The example of women's beauty and its racialization illustrates the complicated co-construction of gender and race. The writing of past history of slavery points out and explains the present time, but it requires a painful fight against various processes of individual and collective repression. "Beloved" and "The Color Purple" remind us of the importance of rememory, while "Paradise", "Morne Câpresse" and "Heremakhonon" tell about memory in excess. The criticism of historian claim for objectivity belongs to a global questioning of science on the one hand, and of the heritage of Enlightenment on the other. The ambivalences of postmemory confront the contemporary sacralization of memorial and testimonial literature. Postcolonial haunting is seen in a nex light, quite ironic. The analysis of dialectic motherhood in "Beloved", "Tituba" or "Rosie Carpe" allows us to conceptualise the link between national storytelling, racialization of motherhood and political control of women's bodies. Reading and analysing the novels with the concept of intersectionality shows a global deconstruction of womanhood, freed from the stress of reproductive sexuality. At the crossroad of women's power to give birth and death, the midwife is a recurring character. The midwife is often accused of being a witch, and she belongs to a feminine mythology that can turn the stigma around. The witch is born from rivalry in both religious and medical fields. In Toni Morrison's, Maryse Condé's or Marie Ndiaye's novels, the witch is an intercultural invention ; her parodic and performative strength undermines literary categories. Born from the trauma of slavery, the novels outline the pattern of concrete utopias. The totalitarian and separatist aspect of these utopias appears in the grinning face of the contemporary eschatological hope: the sect. Therefore any hope of a better future seems to be ridiculous ; when the return to a primary space, turning back in time, is dying in the impossible way back to Africa. The "Négritude" of Aimé Césaire is dismissed, and so are the hopes of "Créolité", by a literature that rejects post-racial utopia. There is not any idealization of movement in these novels, which tell contemporary migrations and pains of exile condition. Although the narrative strategies are different, they all intend to expose and overcome the color line

Adkins, Jessica Y. "Revision of Wyeomyia (Hystatomyia) Dyar & Knab (Diptera: Culicidae: Sabethini." Thesis, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/30430.

Abstract:
Members of the tribe Sabethini (Diptera: Culicidae) oviposit and develop in phytotelmata (plant-held waters) and are primarily distributed in a pantropical pattern. Recent cladistic studies have demonstrated that while the tribe is monophyletic, three of its 13 genera are not. The genus Wyeomyia is particularly problematic and debate among culicidologists continues with regard to the monophyly of its subgenera. For example, the subgenus Hystatomyia was recently resurrected to include seven species within Wyeomyia that were without subgeneric placement. This was based on unique larval, pupal, and adult characters. However, 12 more undescribed species were separated out and identified as Hystatomyia species by John Belkin during the "Mosquitoes of Middle America" project. The objective of this study was to provide a modern species-level revision of Hystatomyia that includes diagnosis and description of all species and an examination of phylogenetic relationships within Hystatomyia using morphological characters from larval, pupal, and adult stages.
Graduation date: 2004

Abstract:
102
In view of the reorganization of the Executive Yuan in A.D. 1976~ 2013 around the Political Alternation, Feeling the pressure of the global economic crisis, the Taiwanese government will eventually have to reinforce its governance capacity and make administrative operations more effective in order to cope with various challenges. The Executive Yuan has actively sought opinions from all sectors, as well as conducted seminars and public hearings on different issues to reexamine systems and regulations in the hope of reforming government structure, improving the efficiency and quality of government services, and increasing Taiwan’s competitiveness. This time, the structural reform is focused on building a streamlined, flexible and effective government. Therefore, this study will also extend to cover the legislative procedures of act modification. As the object which “the Amending Bill of Executive Yuan Constitution Law” is, this research intends to discuss the core issue of “Why the amending procedure of the Executive Yuan Constitution Law always being interrupted and never succeed as anticipation” and attempts to figure out the reasons and causalities. After the martial law was lifted and before the direct presidential election was held, the trends of political democratization, economic liberalization and social diversification conferred by the internally and externally political and economic situation led the government to push forward reforms. Comparing two political turnovers since 2000, there are different political and economic challenges which demanded the governments with higher efficiency. Since launching in 1987, organic modification of the Executive Yuan has spanned over two decades, and yet no changes have been made in the existing basic framework. The best solution for the oversized administrative body is to reevaluate the functions of the 37 ministries and councils as well as nearly 700 other agencies (organizations) under the Executive Yuan and adjust or merge some of these offices to streamline the Executive Yuan. The core government functions will be retained and strengthened, while new ministries or councils may be created to meet new demands. Along with the overall streamlining, government human resources will also be placed under closer supervision. Finally, based on the February 2010 draft amendments sent by the Executive Yuan to the Legislative Yuan, this paper aims to explore the most appropriate framework suitable for the current cabinet organization. That can be used to present a direction in policy recommendations that may poise to offer certain help in the Executive Yuan’s promoting organizational reengineering.

Abstract:
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)
This thesis examines a group of German intellectuals and politicians who, during World War I, formulated and proposed a democratic ideology based on their interpretation of the German Enlightenment philosopher Immanuel Kant and integrated his ideas with those of Karl Marx, the father of modern socialism. Their theory was an attempt to legitimize democracy in Germany at a time when democratic reforms came to the forefront of German politics. These thinkers advocated a non-revolutionary foundation for social democracy by emphasizing the role of human reason and agency in the process of democratization. Because they had abandoned the need for revolution, which most early nineteenth-century socialists believed was socialism’s ‘final goal,’ these thinkers were known as revisionists. The revisionists’ primary medium through which they espoused their views of social democracy was the journal Sozialistische Monatshefte, which ran from 1893 until 1933. The timeframe on which this argument focuses is the last two years of World War I, when Germany’s failure achieve a victor’s peace opened new avenues for the center-left of the political spectrum to achieve democratic reform. The revisionists sought to carry forward the process of democratization, and by doing so, reconnected with the ideas of the Enlightenment.

Abstract:
98
Background: Osteoarthritis(OA) is a major cause of pain and disability, particularly in older people. Total hip and knee replacement are widely recognized as being successful and effective treatments for OA. Now, the relative researches in National Health Insurance (NHI) focus on total hip replacement (THR) and total knee replacement (TKR). Revision of THR and TKR are lack of discussion. Therefore, we want to analyze the tendency of THR, TKR, revision of THR, and revision of TKR by using the data base of NHI. At the same time, we hope these statistics in the future as a reference for health policy. Methods: Nationwide inpatient datasets of Taiwan’s NHI database from between 1997 and 2007 were used. We selected operation code were THR (8151), revision of THR (8153),TKR (8154) and revision of TKR (8155) in patients of different population characteristics, place of care characteristics and disease patterns of medical resource utilization (in-hospital medical cost and length of hospital stay) and quality of care (in-hospital mortality and postoperative infections) influence the situation. Result: The results showed that hip and knee replacement and re-replacement of the annual number of factors exhibited an upward trend. In hip replacement surgery in the majority of male (58%), knee replacement surgery in women (72%) than in men. Cause in the replacement, the THR was osteonecrosis (46.4%), revision of THR due to the unique and specific complications (84%), the TKR is osteoarthritis ( 95%), revision of TKR due to a unique and specific complications (83%). Hospital ownership and comorbidity were medical resources utilization predictable factor; ages and comorbidity, will increase the quality of medical care in risk. In the hip, knee replacement interval, hip male, less than 39 years of age, the diagnosis of osteonecrosis and have the accident event and then a short time interval (p <0.001); in the knee replacement to male 40 -49 years of age, the Eastern Branch and the main diagnosis are for other re-replacement of short time intervals (p <0.001). Conclusion: Over the past ten years, there has been an increase in the number of THR, TKR, revision of THR and TKR. These risk factors could be used as a reference for future health promotion.

Abstract:
The Safety Analysis Report (SAR) of the Oregon State University TRIGA Research Reactor (OSTR) was prepared and used as a safety baseline for the reactor's operation since 1968. Although, in general, revision of the Safety Analysis Report of a research reactor is not a regulation requirement, it should be revised from time to time to include changes to the facility or procedures or update to current regulatory standards. The ANS 15.21 workgroup developed a draft standard format and content for safety analysis reports for research reactors. An area of this guidance, which was selected for this work's revision of OSTR-SAR, is the radiation protection program and waste management chapter. The Health Physics program of the facility was observed. The radiological data were obtained from the annual reports for more than 10 years of operation. The related data, such as meteorological data, were obtained and prepared for the analysis processes. The current federal regulation limits and recommendations were used as the references for dose assessments. The results show the OSTR has a sufficient radiation protection program not only for the facility's workers, but also for the general public, and the program is in full compliance with the federal regulations. The dose estimation shows that the workers and general public can not receive and have not received doses in excess of regulatory limits from the normal operation of the OSTR.
Graduation date: 2000
