Abstract:
This article revives the agency of Lavinia in Titus Andronicus through a blended ecocritical and complexivist approach. A ‘blue’ ecocritical lens identifies Lavinia’s alignment with aquatic imagery, and tracks the development of this imagery across four main phases in the play: human tears, a river, a flood, and a freeze. These phases broadly map onto different modes of ecological relations as the play explores alternative patterns of human–environmental interactions. Lavinia is reinterpreted as an active and independent complex ecosystem, and one capable of communicating through the same aqua

Abstract:
This paper examines two competing proposals for reforming and reviving confidence in the world monetary system, and the two economists, Robert Triffin and Fritz Machlup, who led the charge, one for centralized reserves, and the other for flexible exchange rates. Triffin would later claim that no one did more to ensure that floating exchange rates emerged the winner in the policy debate than Machlup because of his influence on academic economists and policy makers through the Bellagio Group conferences. The Bellagio Group conferences and Machlup’s leadership role are examined.

Abstract:
Over a century ago, 15 states enacted alien land laws designed to deprive Japanese immigrants of property rights. It took half a century for these laws to be repealed. Today, alien land laws are experiencing a strong revival in America. Twelve states have enacted new versions targeting the Chinese community, with seventeen states preparing to follow suit. This Paper provides a comprehensive analysis of this revival, tracing its legal roots to early 20th-century Supreme Court cases that upheld the constitutionality of the old alien land laws. These cases, referred to as “zombie cases,” remain o

Abstract:
Ibn Wahb (d. 197/813), a disciple of Malik (179/795), is reported to havesaid, “We were once with Malik and made mention of the Sunnah. [Uponhearing this] Malik proclaimed, The Sunnah is Noah’s Ark—whoeverboards it will be saved, and whoever refuses will drown.’” Sentiment likeMalik’s is not difficult to locate. Many of the early jurists rooted the legitimacyof their legal hermeneutic in a steadfast commitment to the traditionsof the Prophet. Thus, the oft-quoted remark of al-Shafi‘i, “If a hadith is authentic, then it is my madhhab.” This rhetorical commitment, however, wasa negotiated one. Pr
