Abstract:
ABSTRACTDevonian miospores have been discovered in the previously poorly dated Old Red Sandstone volcanic sequence of Papa Stour. They occur at two sites in minor sedimentary deposits between the lavas, and fossil fish remains are also present. The age range of the miospores is mid Eifelian to early Givetian, probably more specifically late Eifelian and from a position close to the Achanarras horizon. This allows a correlation of the Papa Stour volcanic sequence with that of the Upper Stromness Flags of Orkney and not the tuffaceous horizons in the Eday Sandstones. The good preservation and composition of the miospores indicate a close similarity to other Orcadian Basin sediments and support the view that the Old Red Sandstone sequences W of the Melby Fault have affinities with the Orkney and Caithness successions rather than with Shetland. The age of the volcanic sequence also provides a valuable datum point for plate tectonic models based on the geochemistry of Old Red Sandstone lavas.

Abstract:
The melitid amphipod genus Dulichiella Stout, 1912, is revised. Based on examination of type material or new material from near type localities, we redescribe D. anisochir (Krøyer, 1845) from Brazil, D. appendiculata (Say, 1818) from the south-eastern United States, D. australis (Haswell, 1879) from eastern Australia, D. cotesi (Giles, 1890) from the Andaman Islands, D. cuvettensis Appadoo & Myers, 2005 from Mauritius, D. fresnelii (Audouin, 1826) from the Red Sea, D. pacifica Lowry & Springthorpe, 2005 from Australasia and D. spinosa Stout, 1912 from California. Based on published illustrations and new material we describe six new species: D. guinea sp. nov. from western Africa; D. lecroyae sp. nov. from the south-eastern United States; D. oahu sp. nov. from Hawaii; D. terminos sp. nov. from south-eastern Mexico; D. tomioka sp. nov. from Japan and D. tulear sp. nov. from Madagascar. The new genus Verdeia is described for two established species, Melita grandimana Chevreux, 1908 from the Cape Verde Islands and Melita subchelata Schellenberg, 1925 from Namibia. We provide a key to the world species of these genera.

The first phylogenetic study of Callibaetis Eaton indicated an unrevealed diversity in this genus, including four new species named as Callibaetis sp. A, B, C and D, and the undescribed nymph of Callibaetis (Abaetetuba) fasciatus (Pictet). Given that neither the nymph of C. (Ab.) fasciatus nor the four new species received a proper description, the objective of this study is to describe them. The nymph of C. (Ab.) fasciatus differs from the others species in the subgenus by the presence of one row of setae on basal part of inner-dorsal row of maxilla and metanotum without spines; Callibaetis sp. A is described as Callibaetis (Abaetetuba) cochlea sp. nov. and differs from the others species in the subgenus by having trapezoid segment III of labial palp in nymphs; Callibaetis sp. B is described as Callibaetis (Aiso) calophenigyn sp. nov. and differs from the others species in the subgenus by the absence of stout setae on dorsal surface of glossa in nymphs, and from the others species in the genus by the forewing with red C and Sc areas in female imago; Callibaetis sp. D is described as Callibaetis (Callibaetis) molinerii sp. nov. and differs from the others species in the subgenus, from South America, by the maxilla with tuft of stout setae on outer margin proximad of palp insertion and paraglossa without row of stout setae on ventral surface; Callibaetis sp. C is described as Callibaetis (Cunhaporanga) imperator sp. nov. and differs from the others species in the subgenus by the presence of a complete row of setae on outer margin of maxilla. Additionally, new keys for species of Callibaetis from South America are proposed.

Abstract:
AbstractHuman food waste is considered to be richer in carbohydrates, lipids and proteins than most natural food supplies; however, it is very well digested in scats. So, as an indication of this kind of food in the diet, we have used each indigestible, anthropogenic origin element found in faeces (e.g., glass, plastic, rubber, etc.). There are few studies discussing the importance of garbage in the diet of mammalian predators living in farmland; definitely, most focus on this issue in urban areas. We studied the contribution of garbage in the diet of raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides), red fox (Vulpes vulpes), marten (Martessp.), polecat (Mustela putorius), stoat (Mustela erminea), American mink (Neovison vison) and Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra) in the agricultural areas of western Poland in 2006-2010. In addition, we examined the spatial changes in the diet of red fox and polecat. The largest contribution of garbage was found in scats of raccoon dog (8.8%), red fox (4.8%) and marten (4.3%). The diet of polecat, stoat and Eurasian otter contained 2.5%, 1.7% and 0.2% garbage items respectively. The most frequent item was plastic. Our analysis showed that garbage consumption by red fox and polecat was greater closer to human settlements. The results reveal a continuous gradient in the garbage consumption that corresponds with the degree of synanthropization of particular species.

Abstract:
Rex Stout maintained his popular readership despite the often controversial and radical political content expressed in his detective fiction. His political ideals often made him many enemies. Stances such as his ardent opposition to censorship, racism, Nazism, Germany, Fascism, Communism, McCarthyism, and the unfettered FBI were potentially offensive to colleagues and readers from various political backgrounds. Yet Stout attempted to present radical messages via the content of his detective fiction with subtlety. As a literary traditionalist, he resisted using his fiction as a platform for an often extreme political agenda. Where political messages are apparent in his work, Stout employs various techniques to mute potentially offensive messages. First, his hugely successful bantering Archie Goodwin-Nero Wolfe detective duo—a combination of both the lippy American and the tidy, sanitary British detective schools—fosters exploration, contradiction, and conflict between political viewpoints. Archie often rejects or criticizes Wolfe's extreme political viewpoints. Second, Stout utilizes the contradictions between values that occur when the form of detective fiction counters his radical political messages. This suggests that the form of detective fiction (in this case the conventional patterns and attitudes reinforced by the genre) is as important as the content (in this case the muted political message or the lack of overt politics) in reinforcing or shaping political, economic, moral, and social viewpoints. An analysis of the novels The Black Mountain (1954) and The Doorbell Rang (1965) and the novellas "Not Quite Dead Enough" and "Booby Trap" (1944) from Stout's Nero Wolfe series demonstrates his use of detective fiction for both the expression of political viewpoints and the muting of those political messages.

Full text
Abstract:
Rex - the new accounting standard. Final assignment for bachelor’s degree in business administration. The purpose of the essay is to analyze the views of authorized accounting consultants on the new accounting standard Rex and if it can contribute to develop the profession towards an accounting profession.Data was collected through literature study and through a survey. Respondents to the questionnaires are authorized accounting consultants at the Srf consultants. The surveys were sent to 300 authorized accounting consultants, of which we received 45 responses. Data from the surveys has finally been processed by z-tests and hypothesis tests. We found through z-tests and hypothesis tests, that a significant part of the respondents believes that Rex develops the profession towards an accounting profession. Our results indicate that Rex contributes to the development of authorized accounting consultants into an accounting profession. Our essay contributes with knowledge of whether authorized accounting consultants can be considered a profession. Brundin Franksson and Eisersiö (2011) concluded that Reko was one step towards developing the occupational role to become a profession. The starting point was based on the previous accounting standard Reko. This study has been based on the accounting standard Rex. We came to the same conclusion as Brundin Franksson and Eisersiö. However, apart from the fact that we have examined different standards, the differences have been that we have had different respondents. The essay has contributed with knowledge that the profession may develop as a result of the new context. The essay has also contributed to filling knowledge closures about Rex, as we have previously found no research that has already dealt with the new standard. The contribution can be guaranteed even if the results are not representative of the entire population.

Abstract:
The human use of landscape causes fragmentation and loss of original habitats. Different species vary in their sensitivity to habitat loss. Especially carnivores can be more sensitive to decrease of their habitat because of lower abundance of their prey. On the other hand several opportunistic carnivores can profit in human modified habitats. This study was carried out in the České Budějovice basin, Czech Republic during the years 2008 and 2009 and the aim of this study was to determine carnivore{\crq}s habitat preferences in the fragmented landscape. During these two years were seven carnivore species monitored in forest patches by using scent stations. Records of this monitoring were compared with physiognomy of these patches and structure of surrounding landscape.

Abstract:
<em>Abstract</em>.—Gulf of Mexico marshes have been found to support more than 80 species of fish, 60 species of birds, and many reptile, mammal, and invertebrate species (Stout 1984). In addition to the ecological services provided by salt marshes, the 2005 hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico raised public awareness of the ability of intertidal marshes to reduce personal property damage from storm surges. Since marshes can be destroyed through natural or anthropogenic processes, methods to protect these areas are being developed; one such method is the use of “living shorelines.” Living shorelines serve multiple roles by controlling erosion, maintaining natural coastal processes, and sustaining biodiversity through land-use management, soft armoring, or combinations of soft and semihard armoring techniques. Living shorelines provide a viable alternative to common hardened structures such as bulkheads, stone revetments, and seawalls. One type of living shoreline was used at Saw Grass Point Salt Marsh on Dauphin Island, Alabama. Dauphin Island’s Fort Gaines Harbor was constructed in the 1950s by removing approximately 3 ha from Saw Grass Point Salt Marsh. The harbor now serves as one of Dauphin Island’s two primary access points for recreational and commercial boats to the Gulf of Mexico. Chronic erosion has resulted in the loss of 0.5 ha of the remaining marsh. This saline tidal marsh is of significant ecological importance and is one of only two on Dauphin Island. In 2004, a community-based restoration grant was used to protect and restore the marsh through the use of exposed nearshore precast concrete breakwaters called Coastal Havens. These structures function as detached breakwaters to minimize the effect of storm surge and boat wake through wave attenuation; they also provide suitable substrate for oyster colonization. These structures were selected over other erosion control technologies, including vertical bulkheads, rock or wooden sills, and headlands. In April 2005, 182 units were installed in two interlocking rows parallel to the east perimeter of the marsh in water approximately 1.3 m deep. Oyster density on the coastal havens, measured 19 months postinstallation, was 205 oysters/m2. Measurements behind the breakwater indicate some sediment accretion. The project cost was approximately US$335/m to protect 162 m of shoreline. The dual function of these structures has controlled the erosion behind the breakwater and has provided habitat for a wide array of National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration trust resources, including locally important species such as spotted seatrout (also known as speckled trout) <em>Cynoscion nebulosus</em>, blue crabs <em>Callinectes sapidus </em>and Gulf stone crabs <em>Menippe adina</em>, eastern oyster <em>Crassostrea virginica</em>, red drum <em>Sciaenops ocellatus</em>, southern flounder <em>Paralichthys lethostigma</em>, and various species of commercially important shrimp (brown shrimp <em>Farfantepenaeus aztecus</em>, pink shrimp <em>F. duorarum</em>, and white shrimp <em>Litopenaeus setiferus</em>).

Abstract:
Struts and bifurcations installed in the bypass duct of aeroengines can deteriorate the aerodynamic and acoustic performances of the fan and therefore should be accounted for in the design process. This paper compares two 3-D unsteady RANS simulations of a fan model obtained respectively for an isolated and an installed configuration. In the installed case the strut–bifurcation system creates a strong disturbance of the steady flowfield. This involves a deformation of the rotor wakes during their convection, so that their impingement on the stator generates pressure fluctuations acting as sound sources with strong scattered azimuthal mode orders. The scattering is found by analyzing the acoustic field upstream and downstream of the fan stage. The present results are obtained while the rotor is supersonic (Mtip, rel ≈ 1.24). Since all the blades are identical, no frequency scattering (buzz-saw) does happen in the simulations.

Abstract:
Abstract An experimental investigation of the effect of inlet flow conditions and improved geometries on the performance of modern axial exhaust diffusers of gas turbines has been completed. The first article in the two-part series [1] leveraged a scaled model to examine parametric variations in both diffuser geometry and inlet flow conditions with the latter having significant consequences for diffuser performance. This second article pivots on the conclusions of the companion article and offers findings and physical insight on diffuser performance for on- and off-design inlet flow conditions. Using a high-performing diffuser design from the companion article, an experimental investigation is carried out with tailored distributions of inlet Mach distribution, inlet swirl angle, and inlet radial flow angle which are designed to replicate conditions of an industry diffuser at various loads. Six different inlet distributions were investigated including a design condition and five other conditions which feature mass flows both greater than and less than the design condition. The measurements were taken at near full-scale turbine exit Reynolds number (ReH roughly 39% of the value for an H-class diffuser) and at full-scale turbine exit Mach number. The study was accomplished in a blow-down, cold-flow wind tunnel facility, and measurements included 5-hole probe traverses at planes of interest, axial pressure distributions, strut pressure distributions, and oil-flow visualization. Over the range of inlet conditions studied, pressure recovery at the exit varied by up to 68.5% from that of on-design operation. Tracking of performance coefficients along the axial direction suggested the existence of flow phenomena which were in some cases able to be confirmed with on-strut pressure measurements and flow visualization. In addition to physical insight, the results presented here offer an experimental benchmark for the sensitivity of diffuser performance to inlet flow conditions.

Abstract:
Abstract An experimental investigation of the effect of inlet flow conditions and improved geometries on the performance of modern axial exhaust diffusers of gas turbines has been completed. As the first of a two-part series, this article concentrates on characterizing diffuser sensitivity to parametric variations in internal geometry and inlet flow conditions. Full-factorial experiments were carried out on five parameters including the inlet Mach distribution, shape of the support struts, shape of the oil-drain strut, diffuser hade angle, and the hubcap configuration. To enable an efficient sweep of the design space, experiments were performed in this initial study at a down-scaled turbine exit Reynolds number (ReH roughly 3% of the value for an H-class diffuser) and at a full-scale turbine exit Mach number. The study was accomplished in a continuous, cold-flow wind tunnel circuit, and tailored distributions of Mach number, swirl velocity, and radial velocity derived from on-design conditions of an industry diffuser were generated. Measurements included 5-hole probe traverses at planes of interest. Diffuser performance was most sensitive to the inlet Mach distribution with losses of 0.081 points of pressure recovery due to a nonuniform Mach distribution with higher velocity near the hub versus a uniform one. Detailed comparisons of axial flow variation for a top-performing configuration versus related configurations shed physical insight regarding the evolution of kinetic energy distortion into viscous loss in the wake, as well as highlight the benefit of uniform inlet profiles in practice despite the lower theoretical recovery of such cases. The results presented here isolate the inlet flow distribution as a parameter of high interest for further study which is carried out for both on- and off-design conditions in the companion article [1].
