Abstract:
This article studies the phenomenon of ghosting in religious performance through an examination of a famous Yoruba actress, Iyabo Ogunsola (Iya Efunsetan). Ogunsola once played the role of a 19th century historical character, Efunsetan Aniwura, on stage at a remarkable period of Yoruba history thus embedding her life and career trajectory with that of the culture. Iya Efunsetan has currently transited to an Aladura church leader and a gospel performer. Building on works by theatre/performance scholars who have studied how previously staged performances haunt the re-enactment of performances in another place, time, and context, I examine the religious aspect of the phenomenon of ghosting as it relates to Ase, Yoruba concept of metaphysical force. While Iya Efunsetan cannot shake off the ghosts of her theatrical past, I note that she mobilizes the Ase of her embodied theatrical history fame to authenticate herself as a religious leader.

Abstract:
In 21st century Europe, where religion is a more visible focus in local, national and global politics, how do feminist organisations and groups approach religion? This article explores this through analysis of representations of religion on a prominent British feminist webzine, The F Word. In academic literature and public debates, two dominant viewpoints are articulated in debates on women’s rights, religion and secularism: feminist secularism and religious inclusion. In the context of these debates, the study asks how The F Word writers approach religion, and whether and how their representations of religion reflect these academic and public debates. The analysis identifies four dominant approaches to religion, and two underlying themes, and sets these approaches in their wider social context.

Abstract:
According to foundational Islamic texts, motherhood is a key aspect of women’s diverse social roles; however some Muslim religious commentaries position motherhood as the only aspect of women’s contributions to society. The everyday mothering experiences of Muslim women remain absent from these discussions. This anthropological article will examine Muslim women’s narratives of motherhood and mothering in contemporary Britain. In my research, Muslim women in Britain chose motherhood, firstly, as one of the many fronts on which to challenge patriarchy that is evident in some Muslim texts and to thus ‘reclaim their faith’ as articulated in foundational Islamic texts. Secondly, in their mothering experiences, Muslim women found a space of commonality that they shared with other women – motherhood was something these Muslim women believed they shared with their ‘sisters’ who were from backgrounds different to their own. Within their diverse and multifaceted struggles, Muslim women thus identified a space which they share with other women.

Research has shown that the presence of children in the Jewish Israeli emigrant family intensifies their ambivalence about living abroad, but encourages greater involvement with fellow Israelis as they seek to transmit a Jewish Israeli identity and maintain their children’s attachment to the Jewish state. This article explores this assumption by focusing on the experiences of mothering of a group of Israeli emigrants in Britain. Based on twelve oral history interviews, it considers the issues of child socialisation and the mothers’ own social life. It traces how the women created a social network within which to mother and how they tried to ensure their children preserved a Jewish Israeli identity. The article also seeks to question how parenting abroad led the interviewees to embrace cultural and religious traditions in new ways.

In this article, we analyze two contemporary local Eastern Orthodox contexts, Estonia and Finland, which are related and yet different. We are especially interested in how women negotiate with their Orthodox faith and, within it, the figure of the Mother of God. We are interested in the intersections of popular Mariology (both beliefs and practises), gender and ethnicity. We explore Marian interpretations among Finnish and Estonian Seto women because the Mother of God occupies a special role and meaning for women in both cultures. This meaning could be described as a simultaneous process of identification with Mary and differentiation from her. In this interplay, both Mary’s gendered humanity and her ability for divine intervention are accentuated.

Abstract:
Schwarzerden und deren Kolluvien in der Uckermark als Forschungsobjekt werden als Archive zur Aufklärung der holozänen Landschaftsgeschichte und speziell der Bodengenese genutzt. Mit Hilfe eines speziellen interdisziplinären Methodenansatzes wurden Bodencatenen untersucht und im Hinblick auf ihren paläoökologischen Informationsgehalt interpretiert. Ergebnis sind differenzierte Aussagen zu Zuständen der holozänen Landschaftsentwicklung der Region Uckermark im Hinblick auf anthropogenen Einfluß, hydrologische Verhältnisse, Morphodynamik und Bodengenese sowie deren Ursachen- und Wirkungszusammenhänge. Voraussetzung für die Tschernosemgenese im Boreal und z.T. Atlantikum unter Laubmischwald sind die regionalen natürlichen Besonderheiten - der hohe Kalkgehalt des Substrates und die Klimaverhältnisse mit geringen Jahresniederschlägen. Seit dem Neolithikum bis zum Beginn des Mittelalters ist die Uckermark durch ein Vegetationsmosaik charakterisiert, das durch Offenlandbereiche innerhalb von Misch- und Laubmischwäldern gekennzeichnet ist und durch die ur- und frühgeschichtliche Siedlungsdynamik bestimmt wird. Der Landschaftswasserhaushalt in hydrologisch voneinander relativ unabhängigen Kleinsteinzugsgebieten des Jungmoränengebietes wird mit Beginn des Neolithikums sowohl durch die Siedlungsdynamik als auch den globalen Klimawandel beeinflußt und ist durch einen Wechsel von Trocken- und Feuchtphasen gekennzeichnet. Die Schwarzerdegenese und ihr Erhalt ist Ergebnis des Wandels paläoökologischer Zustände der holozänen Landschaftsgeschichte, die durch unterschiedlichen Verhältnisse der pedogenetischen Prozesse Tschernosemierung und Lessivierung auf der Grundlage des unterschiedlichen Zusammenwirkens der natürlichen und anthropogenen Faktoren bestimmt werden.
Phaeozems and their colluvia in the Uckermark were used as archives for the reconstruction of the holocene landscape history and particularly the pedogenesis. Soil catenas were examined and their palaeoecological information interpreted with the help of a special interdisciplinary combination of methods. Results are differentiated conclusions to stages of the holocene landscape development of the region Uckermark regarding anthropogenic influence, hydrologic conditions, morphodynamics and pedogenesis as well as the relations between them. The genesis of chernozems in the Boreal and partly the Atlantic period under leaves mixed woodland was caused by the special regional environmental conditions - the high content of carbonates in the substrate and the climate conditions with low yearly precipitation. Since the neolithic period up to the beginning of the Middle Ages the Uckermark is characterized by a vegetation mosaic consisting of leaves mixed woodlands and open land areas. The vegetation mosaic is determined by pre- and earlyhistorical settlement dynamics. With the beginning of the neolithic period the landscape water regime in mostly hydrologically independent small catchment areas in the young morain area is influenced by both, the settlement dynamics and the global climatic change. The water regime is characterized by an alternation of dry and humid phases. The genesis of chernozems and its conservation in form of phaeozems is the result of the change of palaeoecological stages of the holocene landscape history. The different conditions of palaeoenvironment, caused by various kinds of interaction between the natural and anthropogenic factors, determined the differences of the relation between the pedogenetic processes, the genesis of chernozems and their lessivation.
