AbstractThe crystallographic orientation of carlsbergite (CrN) in the north Chile meteorite (hexahedrite) was investigated using electron backscatter diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. These studies examined the CrN crystals in the rhabdites (idiomorphic schreibersite) and in kamacite. It was found that the CrN crystals embedded in rhabdite show a number of different orientation relationships with the host crystals. These orientations can be explained based on the lattice dimensions of both coexisting crystalline materials. It was also found that both carlsbergite and kamacite a

Abstract The Old Woman Meteorite (OWM), the second largest found in the USA, was located by prospectors in a steep canyon in the Mojave Desert about 20 km south of Highway 66 in March of 1976. Because of its weight of nearly 3 metric tons it had to be airlifted out of the mountains by a US Marine helicopter. A small triangular metallographic sample, on loan from the University of California Los Angeles, UCLA, was examined by light microscopy and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis to identify the structures and phases present. A sample of rotting seaweed from Vancouver Island contained specimens of four species of rhabditids. One is new to science and is described as Rhabditis (Pellioditis) littorea n.sp. Morphometrical comparisons were made of some individuals between measurements of the living animal and of the same specimen mounted on a permanent slide. Preliminary notes are given concerning biology and ecology of the species. A list provides information on 11 typical and 2 occasional rhabditid species inhabiting seaweed and their distribution as known so far.

Groundnut is a major cash crop grown in tropical and subtropical regions. In Kenya, groundnut is mostly grown in the Western and Nyanza regions and has been ranked the fourth cash crop of the Lake Victoria Basin (LVB). However, groundnut production in Kenya has continued to decline with farmers attaining less than 50 % of the yield potential of 700 to 1400 kg/ha. Yearly statistical reports by Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA), Nuts and Oil Crops Directorate for the last seven years, show the decline has been consistent. The frontal glands of Bothromesostoma personatum were examined using transmission electron microscopy. These glands have two types of rhabdoid gland cells; one type produces rhabdites and the other a different type of rod secretion (rhabdoids). The ultrastructure of the latter type is described, together with their origin. Long necks containing the rhabdoids emerge from the rhabdoid gland cell bodies and extend to the anterior end of the animal, where they release the rhabdoids. The rhabdoids are compared with the rhammites of other rhabditophoran species on the basis of their dye affinities,
