Abstract:
An attempt is made to resolve contradictions in recent studies of the phylogeny of the Rhabdocoela (including the major parasitic flatworm groups), with a hypothesis based on parsimony analysis of characters determined at both the light microscopic and the ultrastructural level. The rhabdocoel subtaxa "Dalyellioida" and "Typhloplanoida" are shown to be non-monophyletic. The taxon Endoaxonemata, comprising the last common ancestor of the Neodermata, Pterastericolidae, Fecampiidae, and Acholadidae and all its descendants is named as a result of the study. Many flame bulbs of Syndisyrinx punicea (Rhabdocoela: Umagillidae) are formed by one perikaryon containing many mitochondria and a reticulum of membranes mainly in its periphery. Large liquid-filled lacunae were seen in the perikaryon and adjacent to it. Flame bulbs are without junctions, without external and internal leptotriches; the weir consists of some indistinct longitudinal ribs of variable size arranged in a single row, and bundles of microtubules extend along the flame bulb. Cilia are tightly packed, with microtubules oriented identically. Many flame bulbs open into one capillary with

The marine microturbellarian diversity is scarcely known from the Pacific coastline of South America. The coastal margin of Peru is highly influenced by cold-water currents (Humboldt Current System). These cold-water currents play important roles in shaping the marine species diversity in this area. However, there are no previous records of marine microturbellarians for Peru. Here, we describe a new species of Rhabdocoela and report on five other species of marine microturbellarians for this country. Carcharodorhynchus giaae n. sp. Microturbellarian flatworms comprise a diverse assemblage amongst meiofauna. These animals primarily exhibit carnivorous feeding habits, preying on various organisms, such as crustaceans, annelids and even other microturbellarians. However, details of their diet are poorly known. This study represents the first documentation of a proseriate preying upon a rhabdocoel. The proseriate was extracted from the sediment and studied alive. Within its digestive tract, structures of the reproductive systems of its prey were observed and identified as belonging to Phonorhynchopsis haegheni, a pred

Abstract:
Twenty-one free-living species of turbellaria (Platyhelminthes) were found in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve (Loreto, Peru), a Peruvian Amazon floodplain. The total 21 observed taxa comprise five species of Catenulida, two species of Macrostomida, two species of "Lecithoepitheliata", 10 species of Rhabdocoela and two species of Tricladida. Most of the species are cosmopolitan and occur in freshwater habitats worldwide. Of the species collected, only Mesostoma ehrenbergi was previously known from this region, whereas five species of Rhabdocoela were only recently described from the Pacaya-
