La nature des monomères, la distribution des masses molaires et le degré de réticulation sont des exemples de paramètres habituellement définis par les ingénieurs pour l’optimisation des adhésifs commerciaux. This thesis describes a novel experimental system for the study of polymer flow in a cross-slot using a Cambridge Multi-Pass Rheometer (MPR). Cross-slot flow is capable of generating pure rotation-free extensional flow and the rheological information from the MPR is in a format which can easily be compared with the results of numerical simulations. Using only a small quantity of polymer, this technique provides a quantitative test of the performance of constitutive equations and numerical solvers in extensional flow. The cross-slot apparatus was developed and experiments were studied principal

A supramolecular polymer is a complex assembly of molecules held together by noncovalent bonds, such as hydrogen bonding, host-guest interactions or coordinative bonds. The last few decades great developments have been made in the research and application of supramolecular polymers, and a wide variety of supramolecular polymers have been prepared. These supramolecular polymers have been applied within many application areas, especially for medical applications such as drug or DNA delivery into living cells, and controlled drug release. Rheological modification is frequently cited as a key application for hyperbranched polymers. However, the high degree of branching in these polymers restricts entanglement and the resultant mechanical properties suffer. Longer distances between branch points may allow entanglements. Highly branched polymers, where linear units are incorporated between branch points, are synthesized with an oligomeric A2 plus a monomeric B3. Higly branched polymers differ from traditional hyperbranched polymers in that every monomeric repeating unit of a hyperbranched polymer is a potential branch point, w

This results in the end product having certain limitations; there is poor control over the molar mass, molar mass distribution and chain architecture of the polymer chains. These limitations can be overcome by using a controlled/living free radical polymerisation process, for example the RAFT process.
