Abstract:
Three islands of the Dodecanese (Rhodes, Kos, and Kalymnos) have produced a substantial amount of published evidence which sheds light on population fluctuations and external relations during the twelfth century BC. The burial evidence from the Ialysos cemeteries indicates that the population may have increased fivefold after LH IIIB. A corresponding decrease may have occurred in southern Rhodes indicating a synoecism of the island. If this is so, the reasons may be related to the increasing prosperity of the main town, Ialysos. This is a period of regional diversity. Distinctive island pottery styles developed under marked Minoan influence. However, mainland influence was stronger, broader, and more constant. None of these islands appears to have contributed to the development of IIIC styles elsewhere nor actively participated in maritime trade. Rhodes and Kos acquired objects from the east Mediterranean and Europe. At this time, there is evidence for a revival of sea travel within and beyond the Aegean. Rhodes, in particular, benefited from this but may primarily have been a passive recipient. The resulting prosperity could have been one factor which drew people to the area of Ialysos in a process of synoecism.

Abstract:
Six brachiopod species (5 terebratulids and 1 craniid) from the upper Pliocene sandy and calcareous deposits of the Cape Vagia (Rhodes Island) are described: Gryphus sp., Terebratulina refusa, Megerlia truncata, Megerlia truncata var. monstruosa, Argyrotheca cordata, Megathiris detruncata and Novocrania anomala. This is the first record of Megerlia truncata var. monstruosa from the Pliocene of Greece and of Megerlia truncata from the Pliocene of Rhodes. Megathiris detruncata, Terebratulina retusa and Argyrotheca cordata are described for the first time from the Pliocene of Rhodes. This brachiopod association displays close affinity with those from the Mediterranean province, where assemblages of similar composition are associated with shallow-water, high energy environments. However, the association of Gryphus sp., Terebratulina retusa and Novocrania anomala corresponds to deeper water moderate environments.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to evaluate the water footprints (WFs) of all the main crops on Rhodes island at a municipal unit (MU) scale, as well as for the area of the island as a whole. WF estimations are made with a distinction of rainfed and irrigated crops, using CROPWAT 8.0. Rainfed crops and the drip irrigation method are predominant in the study area, which faces water scarcity issues. Furthermore, a reduction factor in plant coefficients is introduced, to adapt to the drip irrigation technique. From the findings obtained, useful conclusions are drawn regarding the most water-demanding crops, but also the type of their WF component (blue/green/gray). In all categories of crops, there are large fluctuations across MUs, mainly due to the different yields. Higher WF values occur for rainfed and irrigated olives, which constitute the predominant crop, followed by hard and soft wheat. WF is a useful indicator identifying which crops require improvement or restructuring in a study area, and quantifies the exact volumes of water, which is a useful element in the formulation of agricultural policy in the context of sustainable water resources management.

Abstract:
The Archangelos volcano-sedimentary formation is described here. It outcrops at the base of the alpine Archangelos unit of Rhodes island and displays sedimentary and lithological characteristics, which allow its correlation with the Upper Paleozoic - Upper Triassic Tyros-beds, known from the base Gavrovo-Tripolis unit in Peloponnesus, Kythira and Crete. Consequently Archangelos unit is correlated with the Gavrovo-Tripolis unit. Moreover it is suggested that Tyros-beds characterize the base of the external carbonate platform of Hellenides all along the southern Hellenic Arc, from Peloponnesus through Kythira and Crete to Rhodes Island.

Full text
Abstract:
A large number of Red Sea species are colonizing the eastern Mediterranean Sea via the Suez Canal, mainly following the Anatolian coasts and spreading westwards. Portunus pelagicus is one of the most common Red Sea swimming crabs, first recorded in the Levantine Basin in 1898. Four specimens of P. pelagicus were collected in different marine areas of Rhodes Island from 1991 to 2000, while three specimens of the lessepsian fish Apogon pharaonis, first recorded in the Mediterranean in 1947, were caught during 2002 in the NW coast of Rhodes. The sub-tropical character of the marine area around Rhodes seems to facilitate the propagation of lessepsian species. These migrants have reached the island at different velocity and degree of establishment of their populations. The occurrence of the blue swimmer crab P. pelagicus and of the bullseye cardinal fish A. pharaonis increases the number of the decapod Crustacea and fish species of Red Sea origin observed in Greek waters.

Clewlow, David Frederick. "Judeo-Spanish : an example from Rhodes." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/29498.

Full text
Abstract:
This study explores the Judeo-Spanish dialect through the analysis of an oral sample provided by two native speakers from Rhodes. A twenty-minute segment has been transcribed phonetically and incorporated into the thesis. A preliminary section provides the necessary historical, cultural and linguistic background for the analysis of the sample. Distinctive phonetic, morphological, lexical and syntactical features of the informants1 speech are pointed out and their significance demonstrated both synchronically, in relation to Eastern Judeo-Spanish and modern Hispanic Romance, and diachronically, showing survival of old Spanish elements. In the conclusion, the writer states that the development of the dialect was the result of the unique sociological conditions prevailing in the Sephardic communities of the ottoman Empire and highlights both the historical continuity of Judeo-Spanish as well as its participation in the common heritage of Hispano-Romance. He notes the presence or lack of certain foreign elements in their speech and alludes to Westernization and their education on Rhodes. He mentions differences in their pronunciation. The writer concludes that the segment of the dialogue recorded and transcribed is representative of the distinctive features of Judeo-Spanish and that, as such, it is a good introduction to the dialect.

One of the most significant influences on the quality and character of a school is the school principal. With principals as the driving force behind their schools, evaluation of their performance is detrimental to their success as school leaders. Until very recently, however, school administrators have eluded the same level of scrutiny and intervention that teachers have undergone for years despite their high profile status in terms of leadership and instruction. The neglected area of principal evaluation, therefore, must be revisited. With the historic passage of Article 31, Rhode Island's Student Investment Initiative and S.A.L.T.- School Accountability for Learning and Teaching, increased attention has been placed on the effectiveness and quality of Rhode Island's schools. With this legislative mandate in mind, along with the extensive educational literature placing principals at the forefront of school effectiveness, this study investigated the various evaluation systems used to assess the performance of Rhode Island principals and the attitudes principals had toward these appraisals. Interviews were conducted with principals from each of Rhode Island's 36 school districts in order to examine current evaluation practices used to assess them and to uncover individual perceptions regarding the process. The study also included the collection of evaluation instruments, follow up questionnaires, and other artifacts such as contracts and job descriptions as a means of triangulation. This study confirmed that while Rhode Island principals indicated their desire to be held accountable for their work, they did not possess the necessary authority to carry out many of the duties and obligations inherent in their role as instructional leader. Staff selection and budget appropriations are key examples of the diminished authority they possess. The results of the study coupled with recommendations will be presented to Rhode Island's State Department of Education so that it can begin exploring administrative assessment procedures that can eventually be developed and implemented at the state level. With Rhode Island's many initiatives and mandates targeting accountability, it is recommended that Rhode Island retain a uniform method of assessing principal performance since a school's success or failure is often attributed to the school's principal.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1988.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 117-122).
This is a study of the design competition for the new State House in Providence, Rhode Island, which began in 1890 and ended in 1892. The competition was supervised by the Rhode Island State House Commission, a body formed by the legislature and presided over by former Rhode Island Governor Herbert W. Ladd. The Commission was initiated in January 1890 and began meetings in May 1890. The competition ran in two parts. First local Rhode Island architects were invited to compete and then a group of nationally known architects were brought in to compete with three of the Rhode Island firms. The interest in this building and the competition which led to its construction lies in the style of the completed building and in who was selected to design it. McKim, Mead & White were the winners of the competition and they produced a design (and eventually a building) which is a monument to the then new trend in American classicism which became popularized through the vehicle of the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. This building represents the ideals of the "City Beautiful", or "White City", movement which grew out of the influence of the Fair on the American Public. The study seeks to show how a small group of architects, which included McKim, Mead & White, had the correct social and professional connections to obtain such monumental projects as the Rhode Island State House. It is hoped that the story of the State House's competition will shed light on how the small elite which ruled American architecture in the 1890's was able to maintain their control.

Abstract:
Rapid economic development and also population growth of urban centers in developing island nations have resulted in the generation of large amounts of MSW that in the past were dumped at uninhabited areas indiscriminately. Also, islands have very limited space for new, sanitary landfills. This study examines islands where WTE has been implemented successfully (Bermuda, Martinique, St. Barth) and several others (Jamaica, Mauritius, Rhodes) where WTE has been considered and is in various stages of implementation. The study showed that the per capita generation of MSW increases as GDP per capita increases. Also, it is usually recommended that the waste management system be improved one step at a time, that is, to go from dumps to sanitary landfills, to waste to energy; it is interesting to note that the three islands examined in this study went directly from dumps to WTE. This phenomenon can be partly attributed to the scarcity of land for new landfills, but may also be due to the desire to develop a local and renewable energy source.
