When the poetry under scrutiny comes from the "losing side" in a colonial war of liberation, important moral and ethical questions arise. This thesis uses evidence from British and international archives to examine the events leading up to Rhodesia’s Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) on 11 November 1965 from the perspectives of Britain, the Old Commonwealth (Canada, Australia, and New Zealand), and the United States. One such enzyme is the ethene monooxgyenase (MO) from Mycobacterium rhodesiae JS60. However, epoxide degradation occurs due to downstream metabolism by the organism and abiotic hydrolysis. Abstract:

This thesis discusses the struggle for independence in Rhodesia, from the Unilateral Declaration of Independence in 1965 to internationally recognised independence in 1980. Whilst there are many existing accounts and discussions of the Rhodesia crisis, there is very little work that considers the role of advocacy organisations and the pressure they exerted on successive Governments and the broader left in Britain, and little consideration of the African nationalist movement outside of Rhodesia or the nationalist bases in neighbouring countries. The aim of this thesis is to use the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland to examine the way in which the Anglo-American special relationship functioned away from a crisis and on an issue over which the British were, uniquely the controlling power. Africa became a Cold War battleground in the sense that both the Americans and the Soviets wanted saw this vast area as a potential gain. For over forty years, at the turn of this century, the white settlers of Southern Rhodesia devoted considerable energy to the discussion and the regulation of inter-racial sexual relations.
