Abstract:

We recently examined specimens of the Rhopalopsole from Hubei, Ningxia and Shaanxi, China and three new synonyms of Rhopalopsole sinensis Yang & Yang, 1993 are established: Rhopalopsole furcata Yang & Yang, 1994, Rhopalopsole hongpingana Sivec & Harper, 2008 and Rhopalopsole ningxiana Li & Yang, 2010 are synonymized with Rhopalopsole sinensis Yang & Yang, 1993. We also place Rhopalopsole furcospina (Wu, 1973) as a nomen dubium. Long hairs on the antennae of R. sinensis thought to be diagnostic also occur on Rhopalopsole ampulla Du & Qian, 2011, Rhopalopsole exiguspina D

Abstract:

<i>Rhopalopsole</i> Klapálek, 1912, is a species-rich genus in the family Leuctridae, with more than 80 valid species known from the Oriental and eastern Palaearctic Regions.We recently examined specimens of <i>Rhopalopsole</i> Klapálek, 1912 from Hubei and Guizhou, China and provided a supplementary description of <i>Rhopalopsole ampulla</i> Du & Qian, 2011, <i>Rhopalopsole exiguspina</i> Du & Qian, 2011 and <i>Rhopalopsole memorabilis</i> Qian & Du, 2014. Additionally, we provide new images of these species to facilitate identification.

A new species of the genus <i>Rhopalopsole</i> (Plecoptera, Leuctridae) from Yunnan Province, China, <i>Rhopalopsole dulongjianga</i> <b>sp. nov.</b>, is described and illustrated.This new species is compared to the similar species, <i>Rhopalopsole bispina</i> (Wu, 1949). Recently, we reviewed the specimens of the genus Rhopalopsole Klapálek, 1912 we have collected and checked the holotype and paratypes of Rhopalopsole duyuzhoui Sivec & Harper, 2008. The species of Leuctridae (Plecoptera) from Guangxi, China are reviewed. Two species of Rhopalopsole are described as new to science, R. cestroidea sp. nov. and R. triangulis sp. nov., belonging to the R. vietnamica group and the R. magnicerca group, respectively. Six species of Leuctridae are now known for Guangxi including two additional species of Rhopalopsole and one Paraleuctra recorded for the first time. Rhopalopsole sinensis Yang and Yang, 1993 is one of the most widely distributed stoneflies in southern China. In this study, the genetic structure of nine different geographical populations of R. sinensis was studied based on three datasets of the 18S, COI and ITS2 genes. The phylogenetic trees showed that there had been a great degree of genetic differentiation among its nine geographical populations, but the hypothesis of random mating did not support the formation of reproductive isolation among different geographical populations, indicating that R. sinensis did not form cryptic species. We present detailed evidence that Rhopalopsole trichotoma Yang & Du, 2021 and R. wulingensis Sivec & Shimizu, 2008, are junior synonyms of R. basinigra Yang & Yang, 1995 via a comparative morphological evaluation. We also present a comparison for R. basiningra from Guizhou Province, southwestern China, to understand the reliable characters of this species. The first new species of Leuctridae (Plecoptera) from Jiangsu Province of eastern coastal China, Rhopalopsole vespertilio sp. nov. is described and illustrated. The new species belongs to the R. magnicerca species group and is distinguished by the bat-like shaped central plate of tergum 10, by the medially narrowed subtrapezoidal transverse bars, and by the upcurved hook formed by the small epiproct. The new species is compared with similar taxa.

The only known member of genus Leuctra Stephens, 1836 from China, L. fusca tergostyla Wu, 1973 is discovered in Sichuan Province of southwestern China for the first time. New illustrations of this subspecies are provided for identification. The taxonomic status of L. f. tergostyla is discussed. Another species of Leuctridae, Rhopalopsole sinensis Yang & Yang, 1993 is studied herein and supplemented with new illustrations. The female of R. sinensis is illustrated for the first time.

At least 56 species of the leuctrid genus Rhopalopsole Klapálek, 1912 are recorded from China. Only the larvae of R. hamata Yang & Yang, 1995 has been previously associated with adults. The larvae of R. vespertilio Chen & Du, 2017 are described for the first time based on specimens from Jurong City, Jiangsu Province of southeastern China. Brief biological notes are provided for R. vespertilio and the sympatric Nemoura nankinensis Wu, 1926.
