Abstract:
This article offers perspectives on those who control the Bhojpuri media industry in Mumbai, India, and delimit what is to be shown. Bhojpuri is a dialect of Hindi spoken in parts of the north Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The influx of migrants from these regions to different parts of India has led to a resurgence of interest in the Bhojpuri media, and has drawn fly-by-night operators to the industry. To cater to the migrants’ needs, ribald action romances are produced; but this very bawdiness hamstrings attempts to widen the audience base. The article examines the issues that plague the industry, and explores the ways in which the industry is struggling to carve a sanitized, yet distinctive identity. Keywords: Bhojpuri; media industry; ribald; sanitized; migrants

Abstract:
This article proposes a quantitative analysis of the Romanian translations of 325 ribald Shakespearean puns, which originate in 20 plays and 71 renditions, with special focus on assessing the impact of translator-subjective and objective factors on the rendition process in the pre-communist, communist, and post-communist periods. The findings invalidate several widespread beliefs: Dragoș Protopopescu’s renditions, banned by the communist regime for their ‘modernizing’ approach to the Shakespearean text, bowdlerized more bawdy puns than ‘ESPLA’, which replaced it as the Party-approved Romanian edition of the dramatist’s plays; Adolphe Stern’s translations, harshly criticized in his period, fare better in terms of ribald pun rendition than Scarlat Ghica’s and Dimitrie Ghica’s, hailed as the most successful of their time; modern translations of Shakespeare display a heterogeneous distribution of target-text puns across the surveyed rendition strategies, despite enjoying similar availability of and access to pun translation studies.

There is a simple joy in finding that the emperor has positively no clothes and especially when the finger is pointed in ribald good English. Donald McCloskey does this service in “The Rhetoric of Economics”, where he argues with force and wit that “modernism” (meaning, roughly, positivism, as in “Positive Economics”) will do as an account neither of what economists do nor of what it makes philosophical sense for them to attempt. Instead they should recognize that models are always metaphors and should make a virtue of the literary devices, which they in fact rely on. Armed with the craft of rhetoric and a new “poetics of economics,” they will achieve better writing, better teaching, better foreign relations, better science and better dispositions.

Abstract:
Abstract The translatability of William Shakespeare’s titillating puns has been a topic of recurrent debate in the field of translation studies, with some scholars arguing that they are untranslatable and others maintaining that such an endeavour implies a divorce from formal equivalence. Romanian translators have not troubled themselves with settling this dispute, focusing instead on recreating them as bawdily and punningly as possible in their first language. At least, this is the conclusion to which George Volceanov has come after analysing a sample of Shakespearean ribald puns and their Romanian equivalents. By drawing parallels between such instances of the Bard’s rhetoric and three of their Romanian translations, my article aims to reinforce the view according to which Romanian translators have succeeded, by and large, in translating Shakespeare’s bawdy puns into their mother tongue.

Abstract:
Much has been written of the Marian devotions of King Louis IX of France. Louis, so we are told, would mortify his flesh on the vigils of the four principal feasts of the Virgin. Regular pilgrimages were made by the King to the great Marian shrines of France, most notably those of Chartres and Rocamadour. Day by day, in his own chapel, the King listened to matins, tierce and compline sung with the appropriate offices of Our Lady, and on Tuesdays and Saturdays the Mass itself was dedicated to the Virgin. When the King took communion, which he did on six principal feast-days each year, two of these feasts, the Assumption and the Purification, were those of the Virgin. Rather than listen to ribald or secular songs, Louis preferred the singing of the Ave Maria stella.

Aristophanes too is a vigorous proponent of peace, and the conclusions of many of his plays appear to suggest or encourage a conservative disposition towards ancestral piety or the rule of ancestral, divine law. While these first impressions are not entirely misleading, a careful examination of the two thinkers’works, with attention to Nicias and the question of the gods, suggests a more complicated and revealing picture. Neither thinker is in agreement with Nicias, who proves to be representative of a fundamental human delusion. Full text
Abstract:
The righoletto was a type of round dance current in Florence and its surrounding countryside in the late 14th and 15th centuries. It was above all a dance accompanied by song, one in which all the dancers sang the refrain, and a soloist sang the stanzas. Twelve canzone a righoletto have been identified in literary sources, together with three closely related works also appropriate to accompany the dance. The lyrics occupy a medium or lower poetic register; they range from moralizing texts to ribald narratives. Despite its country origins, the righoletto and its canzone were shared across social classes, largely via oral transmission. One canzona a righoletto survives with its music, the lauda ““In su quell'alto monte.”” Another, the satiric ““Non ti fidare che oggi èè sìì pocha féé,”” has been reconstructed from its model in the Squarcialupi Codex. The righoletto thus offers valuable glimpses of a vanished form of vernacular culture in late medieval Italy.

Tabatabaei, Lofty Seyed Mohammad. "Mechanical performance of v-ribbed belt drives." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1996. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/21092/.

Full text
Abstract:
The design and shape of a v-ribbed belt affects its radial movement in the pulley grooves. When rib bottom/ groove tip contact occurs the wedge action decreases. The beginning of the contact depends on belt tension, fit between rib and groove, wear and material properties. For the first time a non-contact laser displacement meter has been used for dynamic measurements of the radial movement of a v-ribbed belt (type 3PK) around the arc of wrap running on a belt testing rig. Accurate and repeatable results are possible. By the help of this device, the radial movement and the beginning of the rib bottom/groove tip contact around the arc of wrap have been determined experimentally for tested v-ribbed belts. This point plays an important role in the mechanical performance of v-ribbed belt drives. Two sizes of standard pulleys were used for mechanical testing. These were paired with nominal effective diameters, de =45 mm and de =80 mm. Tests were carried out at the speed of c.o =2000 RPM and two different values of total belt tensions (F, + F,) for three different types of rib bottom/groove tip contact. (i) Without contact (ii) With contact (iii) Mixed contact. Slip, torque loss and maximum torque capacity have been measured experimentally during the tests. A v-ribbed belt is assumed to be a combination of a flat belt and a v-belt with the same radial movement of the two parts. Based on these assumptions a new theory is developed for the mechanical performance of v-ribbed belt drives, which gives a new modification to Euler's equation (capstan formula). By the help of Maple V (mathematical standard library software) numerical solutions for theoretical modelling give the variation of non-dimensional values of v-ribbed belt tension, flat belt part of v-ribbed belt tension, v-belt part of v-ribbed belt tension, radial movement and sliding angle with the length of active arc. This theory has been developed to obtain expressions for speed loss (slip) in linear and non-linear zones. The experimental and theoretical results show that the radial movement and slip of the v-ribbed belt with rib bottom I groove tip contact is slightly less than the values without contact. However, in spite of more or less apparent similar performance of v-ribbed belt with and without rib bottom contact, it is found experimentally and theoretically that the compressed rubber of the belt (between cord and pulley) is subjected to a variable internal shear force around the pulley after contact.

Abdel-Wahab, Samer. "Large Eddy Simulation of Flow and Heat Transfer in a Staggered 45° Ribbed Duct and a Rotating 90° Ribbed Duct." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/35919.

Full text
Abstract:
For the past several years there has been great effort in the analysis of internal duct cooling. The steady increase in power output and thermal efficiency requirements for gas turbine engines has called for significant advancement in turbine blade internal duct cooling technology. Numerical analysis of turbulent duct flow has been largely limited to Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations. This is because of the low computational requirements of such calculations relative to Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). However, the tides have started to turn in favor of LES, partly because of the exponential increase in computer hardware performance in recent years. Three conference papers make up the contents of this thesis. LES is performed for fully developed flow and heat transfer in a staggered 45º ribbed duct in the first paper. The rib pitch-toheight ratio P / e is 10 and a rib height to hydraulic diameter ratio h e / D is 0.1. The Reynolds numberbased on the bulk flow rate and hydraulic diameter is 47,300. The overall heat transfer enhancement obtained was a factor of 2.3, which matched experimental data within 2%. The surfaces of highest heat transfer enhancement were the ribbed walls and the outer wall. Results from LES of an orthogonally rotating 90º ribbed duct are presented in the second paper for rotation numbers: Ro = 0.18, 0.35 and 0.67. The Reynolds number is 20,000. The P / e and h e / D were the same as in the first paper. Turbulence and heat transfer are augmented on the trailing surface and reduced at the leading surface. Secondary flows induced by Coriolis forces, increase heat transfer augmentation on the smooth walls. Finally, the third paper studies the same flow conditions of the second paper and goes further by including effects of centrifugal buoyancy forces using LES. Two buoyancy numbers are studied: Bo = 0.12 and 0.29. Centrifugal buoyancy does not have a large effect on leading side augmentation ratios for all rotation numbers, but increases heat transfer significantly on the trailing side. In all papers, mean flow and heat transfer results compare well with experimental data.

Cook, P. D. "Wave transmission along a ribbed fluid-loaded membrane." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.597935.

Full text
Abstract:
This work considers the model problem of wave transmission along a fluid-loaded plane membrane supported by a finite number of equally spaced ribs with dynamic constraints. One of the ribs is driven by a prescribed time-harmonic line force applied uniformly along its length and the remaining ribs are passive. The steady-state, time-harmonic response of the ribs is investigated with particular emphasis on whether the disturbance is localized near the driving force and if so, at what rate the disturbance decays. Under the assumption of subsonic surface wave coupling only, which is explained in the text, closed-form solutions for the rib-forces are first obtained. The system is shown to exhibit a stop/pass band structure characteristic of one-dimensional periodic systems with lossless coupling between adjacent bays. The drive frequencies which define the band edges are ascertained and their dependence on the properties of the passive ribs is illustrated in detail. A critical rib mass is found at which the disturbances at the ribs vanish. The properties of the previously neglected acoustic (or hydrodynamic) coupling are then studied in order to determine the conditions under which the surface wave coupling approximation is appropriate. Some stop band solutions which include both surface wave and acoustic coupling are found which indicate the relative importance of the two types of coupling. Much of the analytical work is confirmed by numerical results and the methods used to derive these are explained.

Johnson, William Richard. "Active Structural Acoustic Control of Clamped and Ribbed Plates." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4011.

Full text
Abstract:
A control metric, the weighted sum of spatial gradients (WSSG), has been developed for use in active structural acoustic control (ASAC). Previous development of WSSG [1] showed that it was an effective control metric on simply supported plates, while being simpler to measure than other control metrics, such as volume velocity. The purpose of the current work is to demonstrate that the previous research can be generalized to plates with a wider variety of boundary conditions and on less ideal plates. Two classes of plates have been considered: clamped flat plates, and ribbed plates. On clamped flat plates an analytical model has been developed for use in WSSG that assumes the mode shapes are the product of clamped-clamped beam mode shapes. The boundary condition specific weights for use in WSSG have been derived from this formulation and provide a relatively uniform measurement field, as in the case of the simply supported plate. Using this control metric, control of radiated sound power has been simulated. The results show that WSSG provides comparable control to volume velocity on the clamped plate. Results also show, through random placement of the sensors on the plate, that similar control can be achieved regardless of sensor location. This demonstrates that WSSG is an effective control metric on a variety of boundary conditions. Ribbed plates were considered because of their wide use in aircraft and ships. In this case, a finite-element model of the plate has been used to obtain the displacement field on the plate under a variety of boundary conditions. Due to the discretized model involved, a numerical, as opposed to analytical, formulation for WSSG has been developed. Simulations using this model show that ASAC can be performed effectively on ribbed plates. In particular WSSG was found to perform comparable to or better than volume velocity on all boundary conditions examined. The sensor insensitivity property was found to hold within each section (divided by the ribs) of the plate, a slightly modified form of the flat plate insensitivity property where the plates have been shown to be relatively insensitive to sensor location over the entire surface of the plate. Improved control at natural frequencies can be achieved by applying a second control force. This confirms that ASAC is a viable option for the control of radiated sound power on non-ideal physical systems similar to ribbed plates.

Proposing an investigantion about the notion of autobiography in theatre, this dissertation discusses the criteria that might accredit a drama text in the autobiographical gender and their possible implications. This reflexion starts from the “autobiographical pact” concept, by Philippe Lejeune, which establishes theoretical support to this category. From this background, this research analyses Mauro Rasi’s trilogy of plays and Pérola. This corpus allows the development of the proposed discussion, as well as demonstrates the mass media acting in the reception process. Through the journalistic and publicity production, the media acts as an extra-literary way, able to fill out eventual gaps between author, narrator and character identity relationship. At last, this dissertation suggests a sort of “autobiographical pact” enlargement, so-called “pact by proxy”.

Abstract:
Svetlana‘s Penkauskienė‘s oil painting collection „Tirpstanti riba“(„Melting bound“) consists of eight separate paintings, that covers the idea of similarity an difference of disparity in age, realized through oil painting. Man‘s figure disappears from paintings of modern art in nowadays. Despite that man‘s figure were the most common and essential piece in paintings of old-world, nowadays it fades. Today the mainstream of modern and abstract art allows us to analyze man‘s physiologic, psychologic and philosophic aspects even without touching the substantial. That is why it is essential to unfold this problem now, when it’s so distant in nowadays and in the other hand it’s so close to our life. In my collection of paintings I try to represent the disparity in age in a different way, I try to discover the similarity and difference of young and old. The intercourse problem between young and old is not only a nowadays problem, it was relevant in all times, but nowadays in these youth-cult times, this is a matter of great importance. So it was my decision to analyze those two separate, always different and always stationary, aspects of youth and age. Whole art work was realized through oil painting. It’s a steady and durable technique, which ensures the work to be done like it was meant to be done in a first place. The aim of art is not the truth, - it’s beauty. Art is not a mirror of reality – it creates one. And it even doesn’t matter if this “new” reality doesn’t represent... [to full text]

Abstract:
The ribat in Bouna (present day Annaba), also called the Fusula Ribat, dominates the promontory of the hill with the same name and overlooks the port of the town. This defensive structure, whose typology dates from the Fatimid period, belonged to a chain of ribats marking Islamic territory along the length of the Mediterranean coast. It was concealed under the Sidi Boumerouane Mosque. Thus, through a series of transformations, the site became a veritable military-religious complex. The recent process of patrimonialization, as well as the restoration project at the complex, has revealed the structure of the ribat, leaning against the wall and essentially forming the foundations of the first mosque of the town. The aim of this article is, on the one hand, to bring new knowledge, as much technical as historical, about this fortified structure, which has largely been ignored by historical research until now, and on the other, to carry out the restoration project of this edifice, which has now been classed as national heritage.

Abstract:
The present study reports on experimental information regarding the turbulent free convection flow and thermal field structure, along an isothermally heated vertical flat plate with ribs. The hight to distance ratio of the ribs was equal to 0.1. The obtained experimental data consist of visualization of the flow, as well as detailed mean temperature and turbulent intensity distribution measurements covering the ribbed part of the heated plate. Heat transfer rates and their enhancement, due to the presence of the ribs, have been estimated from the obtained temperature profiles and by using Newton’s cooling law. Comparisons with corresponding measurements in forced convection reported in the literature, are also made. The described experiments constitute a first approach towards a more detailed investigation regarding the significant free convection currents existing under certain conditions in cooled channels. However, they also reveal some physical aspects of the heat transfer enhancement processes in ribbed surfaces which are believed to be applicable in more general situations and could lead to establishing some design criteria for ribbed surfaces.

Full text
Abstract:
This Coastal and Hydraulics Engineering Technical Note (CHETN) describes the design and implementation of a wave model evaluation system, altWIZ, which uses wave height observations from operational satellite radar altimeters. The altWIZ system utilizes two recently released altimeter databases: Ribal and Young (2019) and European Space Agency Sea State Climate Change Initiative v.1.1 level 2 (Dodet et al. 2020). The system facilitates model evaluation against 1 Hz1 altimeter data or a product created by averaging altimeter data in space and time around model grid points. The system allows, for the first time, quantitative analysis of spatial model errors within the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Wave Information Study (WIS) 30+ year hindcast for coastal United States. The system is demonstrated on the WIS 2017 Atlantic hindcast, using a 1/2° basin scale grid and a 1/4° regional grid of the East Coast. Consistent spatial patterns of increased bias and root-mean-square-error are exposed. Seasonal strengthening and weakening of these spatial patterns are found, related to the seasonal variation of wave energy. Some model errors correspond to areas known for high currents, and thus wave-current interaction. In conjunction with the model comparison, additional functions for pairing altimeter measurements with buoy data and storm tracks have been built. Appendices give information on the code access (Appendix I), organization and files (Appendix II), example usage (Appendix III), and demonstrating options (Appendix IV).
