Tabatabaei, Lofty Seyed Mohammad. "Mechanical performance of v-ribbed belt drives." Thesis, University of Leeds, 1996. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/21092/.

Full text
Abstract:
The design and shape of a v-ribbed belt affects its radial movement in the pulley grooves. When rib bottom/ groove tip contact occurs the wedge action decreases. The beginning of the contact depends on belt tension, fit between rib and groove, wear and material properties. For the first time a non-contact laser displacement meter has been used for dynamic measurements of the radial movement of a v-ribbed belt (type 3PK) around the arc of wrap running on a belt testing rig. Accurate and repeatable results are possible. By the help of this device, the radial movement and the beginning of the rib bottom/groove tip contact around the arc of wrap have been determined experimentally for tested v-ribbed belts. This point plays an important role in the mechanical performance of v-ribbed belt drives. Two sizes of standard pulleys were used for mechanical testing. These were paired with nominal effective diameters, de =45 mm and de =80 mm. Tests were carried out at the speed of c.o =2000 RPM and two different values of total belt tensions (F, + F,) for three different types of rib bottom/groove tip contact. (i) Without contact (ii) With contact (iii) Mixed contact. Slip, torque loss and maximum torque capacity have been measured experimentally during the tests. A v-ribbed belt is assumed to be a combination of a flat belt and a v-belt with the same radial movement of the two parts. Based on these assumptions a new theory is developed for the mechanical performance of v-ribbed belt drives, which gives a new modification to Euler's equation (capstan formula). By the help of Maple V (mathematical standard library software) numerical solutions for theoretical modelling give the variation of non-dimensional values of v-ribbed belt tension, flat belt part of v-ribbed belt tension, v-belt part of v-ribbed belt tension, radial movement and sliding angle with the length of active arc. This theory has been developed to obtain expressions for speed loss (slip) in linear and non-linear zones. The experimental and theoretical results show that the radial movement and slip of the v-ribbed belt with rib bottom I groove tip contact is slightly less than the values without contact. However, in spite of more or less apparent similar performance of v-ribbed belt with and without rib bottom contact, it is found experimentally and theoretically that the compressed rubber of the belt (between cord and pulley) is subjected to a variable internal shear force around the pulley after contact.

Abstract:
For the past several years there has been great effort in the analysis of internal duct cooling. The steady increase in power output and thermal efficiency requirements for gas turbine engines has called for significant advancement in turbine blade internal duct cooling technology. Numerical analysis of turbulent duct flow has been largely limited to Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) simulations. This is because of the low computational requirements of such calculations relative to Large Eddy Simulation (LES) and Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS). However, the tides have started to turn in favor of LES, partly because of the exponential increase in computer hardware performance in recent years. Three conference papers make up the contents of this thesis. LES is performed for fully developed flow and heat transfer in a staggered 45º ribbed duct in the first paper. The rib pitch-toheight ratio P / e is 10 and a rib height to hydraulic diameter ratio h e / D is 0.1. The Reynolds numberbased on the bulk flow rate and hydraulic diameter is 47,300. The overall heat transfer enhancement obtained was a factor of 2.3, which matched experimental data within 2%. The surfaces of highest heat transfer enhancement were the ribbed walls and the outer wall. Results from LES of an orthogonally rotating 90º ribbed duct are presented in the second paper for rotation numbers: Ro = 0.18, 0.35 and 0.67. The Reynolds number is 20,000. The P / e and h e / D were the same as in the first paper. Turbulence and heat transfer are augmented on the trailing surface and reduced at the leading surface. Secondary flows induced by Coriolis forces, increase heat transfer augmentation on the smooth walls. Finally, the third paper studies the same flow conditions of the second paper and goes further by including effects of centrifugal buoyancy forces using LES. Two buoyancy numbers are studied: Bo = 0.12 and 0.29. Centrifugal buoyancy does not have a large effect on leading side augmentation ratios for all rotation numbers, but increases heat transfer significantly on the trailing side. In all papers, mean flow and heat transfer results compare well with experimental data.

Cook, P. D. "Wave transmission along a ribbed fluid-loaded membrane." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 1998. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.597935.

Full text
Abstract:
This work considers the model problem of wave transmission along a fluid-loaded plane membrane supported by a finite number of equally spaced ribs with dynamic constraints. One of the ribs is driven by a prescribed time-harmonic line force applied uniformly along its length and the remaining ribs are passive. The steady-state, time-harmonic response of the ribs is investigated with particular emphasis on whether the disturbance is localized near the driving force and if so, at what rate the disturbance decays. Under the assumption of subsonic surface wave coupling only, which is explained in the text, closed-form solutions for the rib-forces are first obtained. The system is shown to exhibit a stop/pass band structure characteristic of one-dimensional periodic systems with lossless coupling between adjacent bays. The drive frequencies which define the band edges are ascertained and their dependence on the properties of the passive ribs is illustrated in detail. A critical rib mass is found at which the disturbances at the ribs vanish. The properties of the previously neglected acoustic (or hydrodynamic) coupling are then studied in order to determine the conditions under which the surface wave coupling approximation is appropriate. Some stop band solutions which include both surface wave and acoustic coupling are found which indicate the relative importance of the two types of coupling. Much of the analytical work is confirmed by numerical results and the methods used to derive these are explained.

Johnson, William Richard. "Active Structural Acoustic Control of Clamped and Ribbed Plates." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2013. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/4011.

Full text
Abstract:
A control metric, the weighted sum of spatial gradients (WSSG), has been developed for use in active structural acoustic control (ASAC). Previous development of WSSG [1] showed that it was an effective control metric on simply supported plates, while being simpler to measure than other control metrics, such as volume velocity. The purpose of the current work is to demonstrate that the previous research can be generalized to plates with a wider variety of boundary conditions and on less ideal plates. Two classes of plates have been considered: clamped flat plates, and ribbed plates. On clamped flat plates an analytical model has been developed for use in WSSG that assumes the mode shapes are the product of clamped-clamped beam mode shapes. The boundary condition specific weights for use in WSSG have been derived from this formulation and provide a relatively uniform measurement field, as in the case of the simply supported plate. Using this control metric, control of radiated sound power has been simulated. The results show that WSSG provides comparable control to volume velocity on the clamped plate. Results also show, through random placement of the sensors on the plate, that similar control can be achieved regardless of sensor location. This demonstrates that WSSG is an effective control metric on a variety of boundary conditions. Ribbed plates were considered because of their wide use in aircraft and ships. In this case, a finite-element model of the plate has been used to obtain the displacement field on the plate under a variety of boundary conditions. Due to the discretized model involved, a numerical, as opposed to analytical, formulation for WSSG has been developed. Simulations using this model show that ASAC can be performed effectively on ribbed plates. In particular WSSG was found to perform comparable to or better than volume velocity on all boundary conditions examined. The sensor insensitivity property was found to hold within each section (divided by the ribs) of the plate, a slightly modified form of the flat plate insensitivity property where the plates have been shown to be relatively insensitive to sensor location over the entire surface of the plate. Improved control at natural frequencies can be achieved by applying a second control force. This confirms that ASAC is a viable option for the control of radiated sound power on non-ideal physical systems similar to ribbed plates.

Proposing an investigantion about the notion of autobiography in theatre, this dissertation discusses the criteria that might accredit a drama text in the autobiographical gender and their possible implications. This reflexion starts from the “autobiographical pact” concept, by Philippe Lejeune, which establishes theoretical support to this category. From this background, this research analyses Mauro Rasi’s trilogy of plays and Pérola. This corpus allows the development of the proposed discussion, as well as demonstrates the mass media acting in the reception process. Through the journalistic and publicity production, the media acts as an extra-literary way, able to fill out eventual gaps between author, narrator and character identity relationship. At last, this dissertation suggests a sort of “autobiographical pact” enlargement, so-called “pact by proxy”.

Abstract:
Svetlana‘s Penkauskienė‘s oil painting collection „Tirpstanti riba“(„Melting bound“) consists of eight separate paintings, that covers the idea of similarity an difference of disparity in age, realized through oil painting. Man‘s figure disappears from paintings of modern art in nowadays. Despite that man‘s figure were the most common and essential piece in paintings of old-world, nowadays it fades. Today the mainstream of modern and abstract art allows us to analyze man‘s physiologic, psychologic and philosophic aspects even without touching the substantial. That is why it is essential to unfold this problem now, when it’s so distant in nowadays and in the other hand it’s so close to our life. In my collection of paintings I try to represent the disparity in age in a different way, I try to discover the similarity and difference of young and old. The intercourse problem between young and old is not only a nowadays problem, it was relevant in all times, but nowadays in these youth-cult times, this is a matter of great importance. So it was my decision to analyze those two separate, always different and always stationary, aspects of youth and age. Whole art work was realized through oil painting. It’s a steady and durable technique, which ensures the work to be done like it was meant to be done in a first place. The aim of art is not the truth, - it’s beauty. Art is not a mirror of reality – it creates one. And it even doesn’t matter if this “new” reality doesn’t represent... [to full text]

Atkin, Paula Ann. "Investigating radionuclide bearing suspended sediment transport mechanisms in the Ribble estuary using airborne remote sensing." Thesis, University of Stirling, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/1893/21901.

Full text
Abstract:
BNFL Sellafield has been authorised to discharge radionuclides to the Irish Sea since 1952. In the aquatic environment the radionuclides are adsorbed by sediments and are thus redistributed by sediment transport mechanisms. This sediment is known to accumulate in the estuaries of the Irish Sea. BNFL Springfields is also licensed to discharge isotopically different radionuclides directly to the Ribble estuary. Thus there is a need to understand the sediment dynamics of the Ribble estuary in order to understand the fate of these radionuclides within the Ribble estuary. Estuaries are highly dynamic environments that are difficult to monitor using the conventional sampling techniques. However, remote sensing provides a potentially powerful tool for monitoring the hydrodynamics of the estuarine environment by providing data that are both spatially and temporally representative. This research develops a methodology for mapping suspended sediment concentration (SSC) in the Ribble estuary using airborne remote sensing. The first hypothesis, that there is a relationship between SSC and l37Cs concentration is proven in-situ (R2=O.94), thus remotely sensed SSC can act as a surrogate for \37Cs concentration. Initial in-situ characterisation of the suspended sediments was investigated to identify spatial and temporal variability in grain size distributions and reflectance characteristics for the Ribble estuary. Laboratory experiments were then perfonned to clearly define the SSC reflectance relationship, identify the optimum CASI wavelengths for quantifying SSC and to demonstrate the effects on reflectance of the environmental variables of salinity and clay content. Images were corrected for variation in solar elevation and angle to give a ground truth calibration for SSC, with an R2=O.76. The remaining scatter in this relationship was attributed to the differences in spatial and temporal representation between sampling techniques and remote sensing. The second hypothesis assumes that a series of images over a flood tide can be animated to provide infonnation on the hydrodynamic regime, erosion, and deposition. Spatial and temporal data demonstrated the complex controls on sediment transport. The data also showed the importance of microphytobenthos in the stabilisation of intertidal sediments, highlighting their importance in defining sources and sinks of radionuclides in intertidal areas. Water volume data from the VERSE model were combined with SSC from the imagery to calculate the total sediment in suspension for each flight line. This provided the figures used to detennine total erosion and deposition, which were then used to derive net suspended sediment and l37Cs influxes of 2.01xl06kg and 604MBq per flood tide.

Abstract:
The main aim of this project was to consider the geochemical behaviour of a suite of radionuclides (137Cs, 241 Am, isotopes of Pu, Th and U and 234mpa)in the Ribble estuarine environment. Controls on the vertical distribution of radionuclides in sediment deposits were considered and the fluxes of sediment and radionuclides at sites close to the river channel were investigated. Vertical activity distributions were studied by taking cores from various intertidal sediment deposits. Sediment/activity fluxes were studied by installing sediment traps. All samples were analysed by gamma spectrometry. Selected samples were analysed for total organic carbon, mineralogy (XRD), major and trace-metals (XRF), grainsize distribution (laser granulometry) and alpha-emitting radionuclides (alpha spectrometry). The geochemical phase associations of radionuclides were investigated using sequential extraction experiments. Sellafield-derived radionuclides exhibited distinct subsurface maxima (up to 4 785 ± 42 Bq kg" 137Cs, 618 ± 14 Bq kg" 239,240pUand 868 ± Bq kg" 241Am) in mature saltmarsh sediment deposits. Thorium-230 exhibited more complex depth profiles (maximum = 2383 ± 36 Bq kg"). Variations in grain-size were low and therefore not important in controlling the specific activity variation with depth at these sites. The effects of early diagenesis on the specific activity profiles of 137Cs, 241 Am, 239,240pU and 230Th were small. The vertical distribution of Sellafield-derived radionuclides reflected the cumulative discharge pattern from Sellafield implicating a sediment transport mechanism that has involved the integration of contamination from previous discharge events. The vertical distribution of 230Th reflected the annual discharge pattern from BNFL Springfields implicating a transport pathway that involves little mixing of sediment. Levels of Springfields-derived 234mpaand 234Th were highly variable in time and space «0.5 - 495 kBq kg' recorded at Penwortham over the course of the study). The antecedent river discharge regime appears to be the dominant influence on the specific activity of these radionuclides at upstream sites.

Abstract:
In today’s Europe, one third of all buildings are classed as historic buildings, with three quartersof these being graded as energy inefficient. This means that there is a great potential to implementmeasures of energy efficiency while keeping the cultural value in mind. One way to reduceenvironmental impact, with respect to cultural values is according to studies to install internalinsulation. In order to calculate the environmental impact for internal insulation for the entirety ofits life cycle, a life cycle assessment can be used. It can also estimate the improvements in anenvironmental perspective when installing internal insulation. On an initiative from the EU commission, a team of researchers have developed a software called RIBuild – WP5 Software Tool with the purpose of making life cycle assessments in order to determine the environmental impact of internal insulation. The Software Tool is based on a probabilistic method which identifies uncertainties within the life cycle assessments. Therefore, the software is considered to bring something new to the field of life cycle assessments for internal insulation in historic buildings. This study means to evaluate and assess whether or not RIBuild can demonstrate the uncertainties that are linked to life cycle assessments for internal thermalinsulation in historic buildings in an accurate manner. In order to be able to analyze whether the result is reliable in regard to uncertainties, thestandardized framework for life cycle assessments SS-EN ISO 14040:2006, as well as formerstudies on RIBuild, formed the basis for the study’s method and implementation. The resultsproved that with the usage of RIBuild it is possible to detect differences in uncertainties linked tolife cycle assessments between two internal thermal insulations. It is also possible to determinewhich one of these two insulations that are best suited to make the historic buildings more energyefficient. However, it is uncertain if RIBuild can be used to show uncertainties linked to life cycleassessment in internal thermal insulation without a comparison study. This is due to the fact thatRIBuild does not consider actual sources of errors and uncertainties when calculating a life cycleassessment without a comparative study.

The present work aims to propose some relations between the writers Câmara Cascudo and Oscar Ribas considering the similarity in their literary journey, the former belonging to the Brazilian literary system and the latter to the Angolan literary system. During their careers, those writers dedicated themselves to the literary production as well as the research on folklore. The study approach is the concept of literary macrosystem defended by Benjamin Abdala Júnior, which is defined by the contacts that can be established among the national literary systems in the context of Portuguese-language literatures. It focuses on two novels, Câmara Cascudo\'s Canto de muro (1959) and Oscar Ribas\'s Uanga (feitiço) (1951). The analysis of both works allows us to appreciate texts parceled into the literary making and the commitment to publishing their researches. That dualism in both intellectual careers is reflected in the composition of their novels. The reading of Câmara Cascudo\'s essay book, Made in África (1965), has allowed us to see Câmara Cascudo as a reader of Oscar Ribas\'s works and a writer concerned about the African hue of Brazilian culture.

Abstract:
A group of students from the Peace and Development master program at Linnaeus University in Växjö have conducted a field study on agriculture in Ribaue district, Nampula, Mozambique. This study took place over a period of five weeks starting from the beginning of April. The purpose of the research was to perform a socio-economic study to gain a better understanding of the conditions under which the population of Ribaue live, the majority of which are small-scale farmers. Also, how they manage to access resources in order to improve their livelihoods and how small-scale farmers are striving to reach a lifestyle that is more sustainable. This study concentrates on the potential introduction of the Green Revolution Strategy, which is linked to food security and combating poverty, in Mozambique. It asks the question: under what conditions can it be possible for a Green Revolution Strategy to be developed and implemented in the district of Ribaue in Nampula, and which are the necessary prerequisites for a successful implementation of such a strategy? We have, through interviews, observations and participation in various activities, discovered the main issues that need to be addressed in the district. The Green Revolution Strategy exists in theory on the national level but has not yet been fully implemented in practice. Very few producers in Ribaue have heard of the concept ‘Green Revolution’, however, certain parts of its content were known to farmers, such as improved seeds and fertilizers. Furthermore, the gender conditions are still in favor of men, although some significant progress has been made. Better access to education and credit, improved infrastructure, and more effective spread of information and communication are some of the prerequisites that need to be addressed in Ribaue and they are presented in this study.

Yin, Jianfei. "Structure-borne sound transmission between isotropic, homogeneous plates and periodic ribbed plates." Thesis, University of Liverpool, 2012. http://livrepository.liverpool.ac.uk/8193/.

Full text
Abstract:
The prediction of sound and vibration transmission in built-up structures is important for human comfort, health and safety. For structural reasons, engineering structures often incorporate periodic ribbed plates to increase stiffness and stability whilst reducing the weight. However, vibration propagation on periodic ribbed plates is complex due to the existence of stop/pass bands. This thesis is concerned with predicting vibration transmission between isotropic, homogeneous plates and periodic ribbed plates. The objectives are to investigate the use of Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA) and develop and validate advanced SEA (ASEA) using ray tracing to incorporate tunnelling mechanisms. Two approaches were considered for modelling the periodic ribbed plate: either representing it as a single subsystem or representing each bay as a single subsystem in the high-frequency range (above the fundamental local mode of the bay). In the low-frequency range (below the fundamental local mode of the bay) Finite Element Methods (FEM) and laboratory experiments show that the periodic ribbed plate can be adequately modelled in SEA using wave approaches from periodic structure and orthotropic plate theories. In the high-frequency range a significant decrease in energy along successive bays was identified using FEM leading to the conclusion that it is not appropriate to model a periodic plate as a single subsystem. SEA models were therefore investigated that treated each bay as an individual subsystem using wave theory. For different L-junctions formed from an isotropic, homogeneous plate and a periodic ribbed plate, SEA significantly underestimated the response in the bays. Experimental SEA (ESEA) was used to investigate these discrepancies which confirmed the existence of tunnelling mechanisms between physically unconnected subsystems. In contrast to SEA which gave errors up to 60 dB for the furthest bay from the junction, ASEA gave errors less than 6 dB when the mode count for the bay was greater than five. A range of two- and three- plate structures with different periodic ribbed plates or periodic folded plate have been modelled with ASEA. The results all lead to the conclusion that ASEA can successfully incorporate tunnelling mechanisms and provide a significantly more accurate approach to predicting high-frequency vibration transmission across periodic ribbed plates than SEA.

Dunlop, Paul. "The characteristics of ribbed moraine and assessment of theories of their genesis." Thesis, University of Sheffield, 2004. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/12841/.

Full text
Abstract:
Ribbed (Rogen) moraines are large subglacially formed transverse ridges that cover extensive areas of the beds of the former Laurentide, Fennoscandian and Irish ice sheets. Since the flow speeds and stability of ice sheets are known to be sensitive to conditions operating at the bed, a full understanding of the processes of ribbed moraine genesis are critical if we are to appreciate their role in ice sheet dynamics. Several theories of ribbed moraine genesis have been published, however, these could not be tested due to the paucity of data on ribbed moraines. This thesis addresses this deficit by producing the first representative data set on ribbed moraine characteristics. Various remote sensing and GIS techniques were used to record the morphological, morphometric and spatial characteristics of ribbed moraines in Ireland, Canada and Sweden, over a combined area of 81,000 km2 • This established that some published accounts were inaccurate or untrue, and that ribbed moraine morphology is more complex than was hitherto reported. This thesis demonstrates that ribbed moraines form independent of topographic influences, are not always curved down-ice, do not have accordant summits, can have both steep proximal and distal sides, have undulating crests and resemble waves, are not always anastomosing and do not necessarily fit neatly together like a jigsaw. This thesis also provides the first quantitative database of ribbed moraine ridge length, width, height and wavelength, and demonstrates they exist over a larger scale range than was previously thought. The above data were used to test the various ribbed moraine theories. This led to the rejection of the topographic model of shear and stack and undermined the credibility of all other shear and stack hypotheses, the two-step hypothesis, the megaflood hypothesis and the thennal fracturing model of fonnation. Ribbed moraine wavelength data were used to test the only numerical computer model of ribbed moraine formation, which argues that they are the product of instability in a deforming subglacial till. Extensive tests failed to falsify the model and it is concluded that it remains the prime candidate of explanation. However, if future tests or observations do falsify this model, we argue that because ribbed moraines share many common properties of other natural instabilities, it will be another instability mechanism that will emerge as being successful is explaining their genesis.

Heat transfer coefficients and pressure drop data were determine experimentally for turbulent flow in circular ducts equipped with internal transverse ribs. Both fully developed and entrance region results were obtained. The effects of the rib height, rib spacing, and Reynolds number were investigated. The Reynolds number ranged from 5,000 to 75,000, whereas the pitch p/H was varied in the range 4 to 15. Two rib heights were investigated, namely, 0.05 e 0,10 times the tube inside diameter. The friction factor for the periodic geometric was found to be always much larger than the smooth tube friction factor, increasing rapidly with H/D. For the tubes with short ribs, the friction factor decreases with increasing pitch, but the opposite is true for the tall ribbed tubes in the range investigated. For H/D = 0.05, tha heat transfer coefficient is highest for values of p/H around 10 and low Reynolds number. For H/D = 0,10, the highest heat transfer coefficients measured were for p/H = 10, where it was found to be nearly independent of the Reynolds number. Performance comparisons between the ribbed and smooth tubes were made under two types of constraints, namely, equal mass flow rate and equal pump power. It was found that the ribbed tubes have higher heat transfer perFormance for all cases investigated, except for H/D = 0.10 with Re > 60,000.

Dittrich, Alex D. K. "The ecology of Ribautodelphax imitans (Ribaut.) : a seldom recorded planthopper in the UK." Thesis, Anglia Ruskin University, 2016. http://arro.anglia.ac.uk/702728/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study is primarily concerned with the ecology of Ribautodelphax imitans (Ribaut.), a seldom recorded, data deficient and rare species of planthopper (Delphacidae: Auchenorrhyncha: Hemiptera) in the UK. Although it dealt with the ecology of this one species, it explored its community, related species and how they respond to habitat, host plants, and each other. Firstly this project looked at the community position of R. imitans over a single season, clarifying its numerical abundance related to other species in its community. The lifecycles of many species could be modelled over the year; delphacids and cicadellids were mostly synchronous within each family. Monitoring the site over the course of several years also highlighted co-abundance patterns with a related planthopper Javesella pellucida (Fab.), which opened up avenues for experiments and comparisons between this species and R. imitans. Host plant associations of R. imitans were investigated, as were the associated host plant networks of the Auchenorrhyncha community. It was determined that R. imitans was monophagous on tall fescue Schedonorus arundinaceus, but the community was dominated by generalist species. It was determined that in this typical grass feeding Auchenorrhyncha community, plant diversity was not the main driver for species richness however it was probably a factor in its stability. As tall fescue was the dominant grass on the study site, Coe Fen, it was determined that structures associated with this grass, tussocks, were important in the Auchenorrhyncha community. Tussocks were investigated using survey and experimental manipulation approaches. Firstly the role of tussocks in grassland appeared to ameliorate the negative effects of declining sward height outside of tussocks - as a result of cutting and grazing - as more insects were found in tussocks surrounded by shorter swards than long. Secondly, there were contrasting responses of different groups to different aspects of tussock structure, it was thought that delphacids prefer denser and more nutrient-rich areas, whereas cicadellids prefer more open and less nutrient-rich areas of sward. These may relate to both their nutritional physiology and their biomechanics. The strong fidelity towards tussocks of its host plant could increase conspecific heterosexual encounters of R. imitans, thus maintaining high local population size and natality. Lastly, interactions between and within species were investigated in a series of lab-based experiments. No effect of conspecific or allospecific density could be attributed to a change in developmental rate. However, there was evidence of host plant shifting in the generalist J. pellucida caused by the presence R. imitans. The combination of host plant specificity, habitat specificity and competitive dominance feed into a model that would explain how rare species, or low-density populations can persist. However without fully understanding the distributions of species, one cannot be fully certain of its real distribution and status. This thesis provides a clear understanding of aspects of the species’ general ecology, thus helping advise on how to collect further national records of this species, unlocking the key to its true status.

Abstract:
M.Tech. (Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology), Vaal University of Technology
This research investigated the structural bond strength of GFRP rebars in concrete beams under dynamic loading with the aim to characterize the structural bond behaviour and evaluate the limitations of the GFRP rebars under dynamic loading. The dynamic loading in this study was set at 500 repeating cycles to simulate a more realistic dynamic loading scenario such as earthquake since most dynamic loading studies are carried under ten repeating cycles. The experimental work was divided into 2 main tests which were firstly, the tensile tests of the GFRP rebars in order to evaluate the tensile strength of the rebars and characterize their properties. Secondly, the flexural tests of GFRP and steel reinforced concrete beams in order to evaluate the bond strength of GFRP and steel rebars, to characterize the average bond strength of GFRP and steel reinforced concrete beams under dynamic loading and finally to compare the average bond strength of GFRP rebars to Steel rebars in both dynamic and static loadings. The tensile tests were carried out using a Universal Testing Machine (UTM) and the results of the tensile tests of the GFRP rebars showed that the average experimental tensile strength of GFRP rebars was only 56.65% of the nominal tensile strength provided on the supplier data sheet. As for flexural tests, they were carried out through a four-point bending test using a UTM in conjunction with a universal dynamic shaker to create the dynamic loading set up. Steel reinforced concrete beams were used as control beams during the tests and factors such as the tensile strength of the GFRP rebars, the slip of the rebars, the load-deflection relationship and the stress-strain relationship were investigated. The results of the tests showed that the tensile strength of the GFRP rebar is strongly proportional to the maximum beam load bearing capacity and the maximum stresses of GFRP reinforced concrete beams. The results also showed that the average bond strength of GFRP rebars in static loading (8.44 MPa) was only 80% of the average bond strength in dynamic loading (10.95 MPa). Moreover, the experimental work showed that the failure of GFRP reinforced concrete beams depicted large deflections (19 mm) and slips (5 mm to 12.5 mm) when compared to steel reinforced concrete beams (for which the maximum deflection was 9.66 mm at failure and slippage values of 2 mm to 10 mm). Based on that it could be stipulated that the tensile strength of GFRP rebars is one determinant factor to the bond strength behaviour of GFRP rebars in concrete. Hence, the structural bond behaviour of GFRP rebars could be well-defined if more studies were done on the bond behaviour of GFRP rebars in concrete beams under dynamic loading using another type of GFRP rebars that would consist of a relatively high tensile strength as compared to the ones used in this study and different surface texture.

Šiame magistro baigiamajame darbe išsamiai analizuojama vienos valstybės ribas peržengiančio įmonių jungimosi problematika Europos Sąjungoje ir Lietuvoje. Nagrinėjami trys vienos valstybės ribas peržengiančio jungimosi būdai: vienos valstybės ribas peržengiantis įmonių jungimasis vadovaujantis Europos Bendrijų Teisingumo Teismo sprendimu SEVIC byloje, vienos valstybės ribas peržengiantis akcinių bendrovių jungimasis pagal ES Tarybos Reglamentą 2157/2001 ir vienos valstybės ribas peržengiantis ribotos atsakomybės bendrovių jungimasis pagal Dešimtąją direktyvą ir juos įgyvendinančius nacionalinius teisės aktus. Darbą sudaro keturi skyriai. Pirmajame skyriuje aptariamos dvi vyraujančios teorijos dėl įmonėms taikytinos teisės, t.y. inkorporacijos ir realios buveinės teorijos, ir analizuojamas šių teorijų poveikis vienos valstybės ribas peržengiančiam jungimuisi. Prieinama prie išvados, jog būtent nuo to, kokios valstybės teisė bus taikoma konkrečiai įmonei, didžia dalimi, kiek to nereglamentuoja atitinkami Europos Sąjungos teisės aktai, priklausys ir pats jungimasis, t.y. tokie klausimai kaip kreditorių, akcininkų, obligacijų turėtojų ir darbuotojų teisių apsauga ir pan. Antrajame skyriuje vienos valstybės ribas peržengiantis įmonių jungimasis analizuojamas Europos Bendrijų Teisingumo Teismo sprendimo SEVIC byloje kontekste ir prieinama prie išvados, jog vienos valstybės ribas peržengiančiame jungimesi turi teisę dalyvauti visos įmonės, kaip jos apibrėžtos Europos Bendrijų... The issues of company’s cross-border mergers in European Union and Lithuania are thoroughly analyzed in this master thesis. Three cross-border merger ways are scrutinized herein: cross-border mergers of the companies pursuant to the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Communities in SEVIC case, cross-border mergers of the public limited liability companies pursuant to EU Council Regulation 2157/2001, and cross-border mergers of the limited liability companies pursuant to Tenth Directive and pursuant to national legal acts implementing above European Union legal acts. The thesis is composed of four sections. Two prevailing theories on issues of applicable law to companies, i.e. incorporation and real seat theories, and its effect to cross-border mergers are discussed in the first section. It is approached herein to the conclusion that cross-border mergers largely depend exactly on the law of the state applicable to company in so far as European Union legal acts prescribe otherwise, i.e. such issues like the creditors, shareholders, debenture holders, and employees rights protection and etc. Cross-border mergers of companies in the context of the decision of the Court of Justice of the European Communities in SEVIC case are analyzed in the second section and it is approached to the conclusion herein that all companies as they are described in Article 48 of the Treaty Establishing European Community are entitled to participate in cross-border mergers with the... Darbe formuluojama ginčų dėl nedidelių sumų nagrinėjimo sąvoka, pristatomi ir apibūdinami šios sumarinio proceso rūšies pagrindiniai procesiniai požymiai, uždaviniai bei tikslai. Analizuojant darbe keliamus klausimus pagrindinis tyrimo objektas buvo šiame procese pagrindinį vaidmenį atliekantis teismas, įstatymų jam suteikta prerogatyva šio proceso atžvilgiu. Autorius analizuoja Lietuvos Respublikos Civilinio proceso kodekse įtvirtintas bylinėjimosi ginčų dėl nedidelių sumų formas ir daro prielaidą, jog šios rūšies procese įstatymo leidėjas teismui suteikia per didelę prerogatyvos teisę. Atsižvelgiant į tai, jog pastarasis procesas laikytinas bylinėjimosi forma, kuria siekiama greitesnio nei įprasta bylos išnagrinėjimo ir nereikalaujama tokio bylos aplinkybių ištyrimo laipsnio, koks yra būtinas nagrinėjant bylas bendrąja ginčo teisena dar nereiškia, jog šalims neturi būti suteikta atstovavimo teisė, ribojama teisė būti išklausytam. Tačiau įvertinant tai, jog yra suteikta galimybė surašyti trumpesnį, supaprastintos formos sprendimą, kuris palengvina teismo bei pagalbinio personalo darbą, nestabdo civilinės apyvartos ilgais bylinėjimosi laikotarpiais ir yra veiksminga proceso koncentruotumo priemonė, teismas savo nuožiūra galėtų ir turėtų labiau populiarinti bei praktikuoti šį civilinio proceso kodekse reglamentuojamą ginčų sprendimo būdą.
In the work Small claims litigation: does the implementation of the Court’s discretion have limits? the conception of Small claims litigation is formulated, the main attributes, goals and objectives of this sort of summary process are determined and described. When analyzing the problems, raised in this work, the main object of the research became the Court, which plays the leading role in this process due to prerogative power, given by the law. The author of this work analyzes the different forms of Small claims litigation, established in the Civil Process Code of the Republic of Lithuania, and makes an assumption that in this sort of process the prerogative power given to the Court by legislative bodies is excessive. Although the process in question is regarded to as a form of litigation, which is used to speed up investigation of a case without requiring the level of fact-finding as high as it is necessary in cases of common legal proceedings, it does not mean that the parties’ should not be given the right to be represented, or their right to be heard should be limited. Considering the fact, that the opportunity has been given to draw up a more concise and streamlined solution, which would facilitate the work of the Court and ancillary staff, would not impede civil turnover with long litigation periods, and would be a good measure of process concentration, the Court at its discretion should put more efforts popularizing and practicing this method of dispute procedure... Abstract:
Our research is about the hydrogeological study of the region of the ribaa-bittit sources. These sources are situated between the karstic plateaus of moyen atlas and the sais plain. They are fed by these plateaus. To understand the hydrogeological behaviour of these sources we are going to study in the first part of our worck the stable data of this hydrogeological unit of el hajeb-ifrane, that is its lithostratigraphy, its geomorphology, its hydrographical net work. This unit is constituated by carbonated rocks with argillaceous and marly layers. The consequence of which is superposition of underg round aquifers. In the second part, we underline the essential caracteristics of the climate of the unit of el hajeb-ifrane with a special interest for the analysis of the precipitations given that the latter represent in this area the cause of the through-flowing. It appears that the number of rainy days is important but also that the rains is weak. In the third part we study the hydrogeological structure of the ribaa-bittit based on the analysis of the hydrograms of the most important sources. Even if sources are probably fed by the same area differences of hydrogeological behaviour are noticed between the various ribaa-bittit sources under consideration. Folloing these three essential parts quite necessary for the understanding of the hydrogeological behaviour of the ribaa-bittit sources a last chapitre will give more details about both uses of these waters of this unit which are the rupplying in drinking water of the meknes city and the irrigation of sais plain

The research points to a path of artistic experimentation, unveiled in the very first my space contact with the dance: the "house of contact," object investigation of this research that establishes connections multiple and heterogeneous of performer-creator with life stories, which are raw material smain articulate for the recognition of principles and recurrences of a drama specific particular and local, the "dramaturgy of contact." to buy the basics of such a proposition, I use theoretical and methodological rhizome of Deleuze and Guattari (1995), in their percepts and affects (1992), brokered by the triad image-time-motion of Deleuze (1992), as a strategy of theoretical and practical cut across writing. Based on the notion of body subject of Merleau-Ponty (1999) and the dramaturgy of Eugenio Barba (2010) in fabric with the phenomenology of perception and contact-improvisation were the demonstrators elements that support the principles of dramaturgy Contact aroused by the life stories of those who practice, responding to the main objective of this Research Essay. We used the following methods of data collection: survey bibliographic documents that permeated the nature of the subject studied here and their interfaces with different areas knowledge, participant observation, interviews open and collecting individual and collective sense through letters, photographs, videos, songs, drawingsand relational objects that allowed reflection and analysis constructed by mapping a timeline of the School Ribalta dance, the dance company Ribalta and triad Marlene-Beth-Mayrla, lives that exist in the House Ribalta and give any sense of this writing. Abstract:
[Truncated abstract] Shipbuilding is fast becoming a priority industry in Australia. With increasing demands to build fast vessels of lighter weight, shipbuilders are more concerned with noise and vibration problems in ships than ever. The objective of this thesis is to study the vibration response of coupled structures, in the hope that the study may shed some light in understanding the general features of ship vibration. An important feature characterizing the vibration in complex structures is the input mobility, as it describes the capacity of structures in accepting vibration energy from sources. The input mobilities of finite ribbed plate and plate/plate coupled structures are investigated analytically and experimentally in this study. It is shown that the input mobility of a finite ribbed plate is bounded by the input mobilities of the uncoupled plate and beam(s) that form the ribbed plate and is dependent upon the distance between the source location and the stiffened beam(s). Off-neutral axis loading on the beam (point force applied on the beam but away from the beam’s neutral axis) affects the input power, kinetic energy distribution in the component plates of the ribbed plate and energy flow into the plates from the beam under direct excitation ... solutions were then used to examine the validity of statistical energy analysis (SEA) in the prediction of vibration response of an L-shaped plate due to deterministic force excitations. It was found that SEA can be utilized to predict the frequency averaged vibration response and energy flow of L-shaped plates under deterministic force (moment) excitations providing that the source location is more than a quarter of wavelength away from the plate edges. Furthermore, a simple experimental method was developed in this study to evaluate the frequency dependent stiffness and damping of rubber mounts by impact test. Finally, analytical methods developed in this study were applied in the prediction of vibration response of a ship structure. It was found that input mobilities of ship hull structures due to machinery excitations are governed by the stiffness of the supporting structure to which the engine is mounted. Their frequency averaged values can be estimated from those of the mounting structure of finite or infinite extents. It was also shown that wave propagation in ship hull structures at low frequencies could be attenuated by irregularities imposed to the periodic locations of the ship frames. The vibration at higher frequencies could be controlled by modifications of the supporting structure.

Isdell, Robert Earl. "Shifting Patterns of Ribbed Mussel Distribution and Ecosystem Services in Response to Sea Level Rise." W&M ScholarWorks, 2018. https://scholarworks.wm.edu/etd/1550153621.

Abstract:
Throughout the salt marshes of the US Atlantic Coast, ribbed mussels (Geukensia demissa, Dillwyn, 1817) and smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora Loisel) form an important mutualistic relationship. Spartina provides habitat and promotes settling of ribbed mussels, which, in turn, stabilize and fertilize the Spartina and sediment. This relationship, however, is at risk of interruption due to sea level rise, erosion, and coastal development. Among the most at-risk segments of the marsh, the front (waterward) edge of the marsh is also where ribbed mussels and their ecosystem services are concentrated. Despite their importance of ribbed mussels to the salt marsh ecosystem, very little is known about the spatial distribution. in order to address these questions, we had the following objectives: 1) to identify spatial factors influencing mussel distribution across the landscape, 2) to quantify the contribution of ribbed mussels to nitrogen removal in the presence of Spartina, and 3) to assess how the distribution of the population and its ecosystem services are likely to change by the year 2050. We conducted field work in the summers of 2015 and 2016 to survey ribbed mussel populations in 30 marshes around the Chesapeake Bay. Ribbed mussel population density and distribution was positively related to the number of Spartina stems, the exposure of the site, and to a minor degree, the amount of agriculture within 300 m. The amount of forested land cover within 60 m was negatively related to ribbed mussel density. With these factors, we built a model to estimate ribbed mussel populations in the first two meters (edge) of the marsh, and estimated the presence of 805 million mussels along the edges of Virginia's marshes. Sediment core incubations revealed that when ribbed mussels are integrated with Spartina, the ammonium and particulate removal is enhanced, relative to when mussels occur separately, but that the overall rates vary dramatically by the location of the marsh whence the cores were collected. Spatial application of a 0.62 m sea level rise scenario and local erosion rates altered the distribution of both marshes and ribbed mussels. Overall, ribbed mussel abundance declined by 3.6% between 2018 and 2050; however, most locations saw moderate to large declines, while a very few locations saw very large increases (> 100%). Declines in abundance were greatest in urban areas dominated by fringing marsh and extensive shoreline armoring, while gains were greatest in agricultural areas with extensive marshes. The projected redistribution of mussels by 2050 will have important implications for water quality improvement goals that will need to be addressed by local and state authorities. This dissertation has focused on the seascape ecology and management of ribbed mussels in the Chesapeake Bay. The work has demonstrated the importance of applying spatial techniques to study and understand organisms and ecosystems at the interface between land and water. Only through further study and proactive planning will we be able to plan for and address the coming impacts of anthropogenic climate change and sea level rise.

Abstract:
The evolution of the lower course and estuary of the river Ribble (Lancashire, U.K.) during the Holocene is the object of study, along with the history of sediment fluxes in them and their influence on past human settlements. Investigation of the valley floor geomorphology and terrace fill stratigraphy and sedimentology, as well as palaeoecological analysis and a number of 14C essays, allowed the reconstruction of Late Pleistocene and Holocene alluvial history and chronology of a reach at the transition point between fluvial and estuarine influences; the archaeological evidence is evaluated in this context. Alluviation and incision cycles led to the formation of four river terraces. The oldest terrace, rich in coarse-grained materials, seems to be of Pleistocene age. 14C dating on the second terrace would point to an Earliest Holocene or Younger Dryas age; the fill, however, comprises abundant fine-grained overbank sediments. Large parts of the unit were reworked during a phase of lateral channel activity that occurred prior to ca. 8900 cal BP; between then and ca. 6900 cal BP the river underwent meander cut-offs, after which limited lateral activity occurred. New alluviation occurred around 4700 cal BP, possibly related to the aggradation of the third terrace, though its fill is only certainly known, from archaeological evidence, to be of pre-Roman age. Channel size increase occurred by the time the terrace was deposited. The fill features abundant clayey sediments; it was incised at or after the end of the Roman period. The last terrace was deposited in the late first millennium AD mainly as overbank silts, and has since been incised again. Fluvial response appears mainly related to climate changes, river activity corresponding to shifts to wetter, cooler climate. Human action likely enhanced fluvial response in the historical period, leading to post-Roman incision and deposition. There seems to be a good connection between sediment production in the catchment and deposition downstream. Local factors also show a major importance in determining river response. Early Holocene fluvial history finds no match in other Northern English rivers; a different response to the same climate changes is apparent, possibly related to differences in sediment supply conditions. No clear evidence is found supporting an influence of sea-level change on river processes. On the other hand, it appears plausible river sediment input has a driving influence in enhancing or causing minor regressions recorded on the estuary. The conditions existing in Roman times could have allowed access from the sea to the Roman sites at the upper end of the Ribble estuary and by its North shore; a relative sea-level minimum could have caused a shift of focus in naval traffic from the former to the latter site.

Ahn, Soo Whan. "Turbulent fluid flow and heat transfer induced by square-ribbed surface roughness in concentric annuli." Thesis, University of Ottawa (Canada), 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/5657.

Full text
Abstract:
In this study, the asymmetric turbulent fluid flow and heat transfer induced by square-rib roughness elements in concentric annuli are analytically studied in an attempt to investigate the resultant effect of artificial roughness on the heat transfer and friction forces. In the analysis, a turbulence model based on a modified Prandtl's mixing length theory based on a previous study of the flow in parallel plates with a rough surface on one side is used to determine the velocity distribution and friction. The two velocity profiles in the problem are matched using a force balance. The temperature distribution is then predicted and heat transfer coefficients are calculated. The results of the velocity profiles and friction factors are in good agreement with the experimental results. The effects of various parameters such as the roughness ratio, the pitch to roughness ratio, the radius ratio, etc. on friction factor and Nusselt number are investigated. The present study demonstrates that certain artificial roughness elements may be used to enhance heat transfer rates with advantages from the overall efficiency point of view.

Abstract:
ABSTRACTLateral Resistance of Piles near 15 Foot Vertical MSE AbutmentWalls Reinforced with Ribbed Steel StripsJarell Jen Chou HanDepartment of Civil and Environmental Engineering, BYUMaster of ScienceA full scale MSE wall was constructed and piles were driven at various distances behind the wall. Lateral load tests were conducted to determine the effect of pile spacing from the wall on the lateral resistance of the piles and the force resisted by the MSE reinforcement. The piles used for this study were 12.75 inch pipe piles and the reinforcements were ribbed steel strips.Load-deflection curves were developed for piles located behind the wall at 22.4 inches (1.7 pile diameters), 35.4 inches (2.8 pile diameters), 39.4 inches (3.1 pile diameters) and 49.9 inches (3.9 pile diameters). Data results show that the lateral resistance of the pile decreases as the spacing behind the wall decreases. Measured load-deflection curves were used to compare with computed curves from LPILE with p-multiplier developed for the lateral resistance of piles closer to the wall. A curve was created showing the variation of p-multiplier with normalized pile spacing behind the wall. The curve suggests that a p-multiplier of 1 (no reduction in lateral resistance) can be used when a pile is placed at least four pile diameters from the back face of the wall.
