Abstract:
Gas turbines are today used in numerous industrial and aeronautical applications. To increase the specific power output and efficiency, a high turbine inlet gas temperature is desired. The high temperature leads to the need of cooling critical components in the hot gas path. Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery AB, SIT AB, in Finspång manufactures gas turbines where the internal cooling of critical components is done through serpentine channels. To utilize the cooling air as efficiently as possible, vortex creating objects are placed inside the channel which result in higher heat transfer. To com

The demand for more power and performance from electronic equipment has constantly been growing resulting in an increased amount of heat dissipation from these devices. Thermal management of high-density power control units for hybrid electric vehicles is one such application. Over the last few years, the performance of this power control unit has been improved and size has been reduced to attain higher efficiency and performance causing the heat dissipation as well as heat density to increase significantly. This study experimentally investigates the effects of rotation, the buoyancy force, and the channel aspect ratio on heat transfer in two-pass rotating rectangular channels. The experiments are conducted with two surface conditions: smooth walls and 45?? angled ribbed walls. The channel aspect ratios include 4:1, 2:1, 1:1, 1:2 and 1:4. Four Reynolds numbers are studied: 5000, 10000, 25000 and 40000. The rotation speed is fixed at 550 rpm for all tests, and for each channel, two channel orientations are studied: 90?? and 45?? or 135??, with respect to the plane of rotation. Rib turbulators are p
