Abstract:
The main challenge of modern agriculture lies in the need of enhancing crop productivity to guarantee food security while achieving the sustainability of cropping systems in a changing climate. In a recent speech to the 21st Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21) held in Paris, the president of the United States declared that for all the challenges we face, the growing threat of climate change could define the contours of this century more dramatically than any other. Sub-Saharan Africa is today facing a big challenge regarding food deficiency and water scarcity due to climate change. One of these countries is Rwanda, a small landlocked country in the middle of Africa. Rwanda strongly depend on agriculture, both in the aspect of reducing poverty and hunger but also because their economy security depend on it. Because of increasingly fluctuating rainfalls their agriculture becomes more dependent on irrigation and the availability to water resources. To investigate how the climate change will affect the amount of water resources in the coming decades, this st

McKnight, Benjamin 1985. "Fertility-Based Herbicide Injury Recovery from Clomazone in Hybrid Rice (Oryza sativa L.)." Thesis, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/148113.

Full text
Abstract:
Clomazone is a carotenoid biosynthesis inhibitor commonly used as a preemergence and postemergence herbicide in rice for the control of grass weeds. Rice injury can occur and symptoms are often associated with soil characteristics and environmental conditions. The objective of this research was to investigate how environmental conditions and planting density influence clomazone injury in rice plants. Also, different fertility treatments were assessed to determine if remediation from clomazone injury occurred. Field studies were conducted in 2008 and 2009 to determine the role of planting date,

Flooding cycle in wetland rice (Oryza sativa L.) production systems is often subject to seasonal and cultural variations which may affect the availability and uptake of nitrogen in different ways. These factors may more or less influence the physiological and growth responses of the plant. In an effort to improve productivity in rice cropping systems, two controlled environment studies and a field trial were conducted to evaluate the growth and yield responses of rice to different flooding regimes and nitrogen fertilizer management strategies. Farmers in Nepal lose about a third of their harvested grain due to postharvest handling and storage. This has led to food insecurity and economic losses. Despite the importance of postharvest, the grain storage system in Nepal relies on traditional storage structures like bamboo granaries. The incidence of storage pests is reported up to 100% in these structures. To minimize the storage loss, farmers use different grain protection methods including toxic chemicals.
