Cooperation and locally driven water management are at the forefront of food production water management for smallholder farmers in low-income countries. The aim of this paper was to critically reflect on the experiences of 5,819 smallholder rice farmers in Karonga District, Malawi, who were members of a farmers’ organization that achieved improved water stewardship, but could not achieve Alliance for Water Stewardship certification within a three-year project. The data for this paper were obtained through farmer and stakeholder interviews. The partnership attempted to bring together four part

SUMMARYA study was conducted to evaluate performance of two rice (Oryza sativa L.) varieties under water saving irrigation through alternate wetting and drying in sandy clay loams of Southern Malawi. The varieties, Nunkile and NERICA 4, are adapted to upland and lowland irrigated conditions, individually, and commonly grown by farmers. Four irrigation regimes were used in the study: (1) continuous flooding with surface water level kept at approximately 5 cm throughout crop duration (CFI), (2) alternate wetting and drying up to start of flowering after which continuous flooding was applied (AWD

Most of the paddy rice farmers have not provided an appropriate response to the innovation of environmentally friendly rice management, because the ability or capacity owned by farmers has not been able to support the production of environmentally friendly and sustainable farming products. The capacity of farmers to manage environmentally friendly paddy rice is closely related to individual behavior towards technological innovations that are applied and disseminated. This study aims to determine the productivity of paddy rice with an environmentally friendly management approach. The research w

The presence of bacterial panicle blight disease caused by Burkholderia glumae have been reported to infect rice plants in Indonesia. There have been no reports of yield losses due to B. glumae infection, but this pathogen is seed-borne so that it can increase the spreading potential to other areas. This study aims to determine the spread of the disease area of bacterial panicle blight in Java and to detect B. glumae based on ITS region of 16-23S rDNA. Angular Leaf Spot (ALS), caused by the fungus Pseudocercospora griseola (Sacc.) An effective and environmentally friendly alternative to control this disease is the use of improved varieties that combine resistance genes of Andean and Mesoamerican origin. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) is the second most important cereal crop in Malawi. Rice productivity in the dominant (85%) rainfed ecosystem is very low, with mean yield of only 1.4 t ha-1. Farmers plant traditional landraces that have low yield potential and are susceptible to various stresses such as drought and diseases. Development and introduction of improved rice varieties, with stress tolerance traits from introduced varieties, such as the New Rice for Africa (NERICAs), could significantly increase productivity. Previous attempts to introduce high yielding irrigated varieties into the dominant

As hypothesized, the study finds that the tendency of rice prices to move together in spatially separated markets has significantly increased since the implementation of MACE. It concludes that ICT-based market information services project enhances linkages between markets and can therefore improve the efficiency with which agricultural markets perform. The study discusses implications of this finding for policy.
