The cell wall polysaccharides of wheat and rice endosperm represent an important source of dietary fibre with up to 50% of the dietary fibre intake in western diets deriving from cereal consumption. They respond to cell-structure disruption caused by herbivore probing and feeding by the formation of callose. By using bioinformatics, the barley semi-dwarfing gene, sdw1, was found to be similar in its structure to that of the semi-dwarfing gene, sd1, in rice.
