Abstract:
In this paper, we report 10 species of Syllidae, collected in the Socotra Archipelago (Indian Ocean). They belong to eight different genera in four subfamilies namely, Syllinae: Haplosyllis Langerhans, 1879, Megasyllis San Martín, Hutchings & Aguado, 2008, Opisthosyllis Langerhans, 1879, Trypanosyllis Claparède, 1864; Eusyllinae: Eusyllis Malmgren, 1867, Odontosyllis Claparède, 1863; Exogoninae: Salvatoria McIntosh, 1885; and Autolytinae: Myrianida Milne Edwards, 1845. Trypanosyllis mercedesae n. sp., is here formally described and distinguished from congeners. Trypanosyllis richardi Gravier, 1900 is re-described, adding important taxonomic information to the original description, based on specimens collected from Djibouti (Gulf of Aden). We provide new insight into the reproduction of Megasyllis heterosetosa (Hartmann-Schröder, 1991) with the description of a specimen with an attached female dicerous stolon, full of oocytes. Odontosyllis polycera (Schmarda, 1861) is described because it is newly recorded for the Indian Ocean. We also provide some remarks about Myrianida pachycera (Augener, 1913), collected with a chain of stolons.

Nenon, Porter. "“Esther Weren’t No Harlot”: Rape and Marriage in Go Tell It on the Mountain." James Baldwin Review 3, no. 1 (October 4, 2017): 9–26. http://dx.doi.org/10.7227/jbr.3.2.

Abstract:
To consider how James Baldwin resisted racialized notions of sexuality in his first novel, Go Tell It on the Mountain, I employ a number of black feminist critics—including Saidiya Hartman, Patricia Williams, Hortense Spillers, and Patricia Hill Collins—to analyze three under-studied minor characters: Deborah, Esther, and Richard. Those three characters are best understood as figures of heterosexual nonconformity who articulate sophisticated and important critiques of rape and marriage in America at the turn of the twentieth century. Baldwin thus wrote subversive theories of race and sexuality into the margins of the novel, making its style inextricable from its politics. Baldwin’s use of marginal voices was a deft and intentional artistic choice that was emancipatory for his characters and that remains enduringly relevant to American sexual politics. In this particularly polarizing transition from the Obama era to the Donald J. Trump presidency, I revisit Baldwin’s ability to subtly translate political ideas across fault lines like race, nationality, and sex.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
In late August 2002, patches of soybean (Glycine max) plants in a field in Richland County, ND exhibited symptoms and signs of charcoal rot and died prematurely. Dead plants had a silvery-gray appearance, and black microsclerotia (76 ± 28 μm in diameter) were present in the vascular tissue of the lower stems and roots. Stem tissue was placed in petri dishes containing potato dextrose agar (PDA). Gray hyphae grew from the stem tissue and subsequently turned black and formed microsclerotia (188 × 139 ± 48 μm). The fungus was identified as Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid. based on colony color and morphology and size of the microsclerotia (1). To confirm pathogenicity, soybean plants (cv. Garst D 041 RR) were grown in the greenhouse and inoculated with the previously obtained isolate of M. phaseolina. Stems of soybean plants at the V2 stage were excised just below the third node. Mycelia plugs of a 1-week-old culture of M. phaseolina were placed into the large end of disposable micropipette tips (200 μl). The micropipette tips containing the M. phaseolina culture were subsequently placed over 10 excised soybean stems. To serve as a control, 10 excised soybean stems were inoculated with micropipette tips containing plugs of noninfested PDA. Thirty days after inoculation, micropipette tips were removed, and lesions that had developed on the stem were measured. The mean lesion length of M. phaseolina inoculated stems was 7 mm; no lesions developed on the control plants. M. phaseolina was reisolated from infected tissue of inoculated plants that were placed on PDA. Charcoal rot was only observed in the Richland County field; however, no surveys were conducted to determine the prevalence of the disease throughout the soybean production area of North Dakota. Because it is now known that this disease occurs in North Dakota, growers, extension personnel, and crop consultants must scout for the disease and practice recommended management strategies.
