Abstract:
Historians of pragmatism have long overlooked Kenneth Burke and Richard McKeon. This has not been without good reason. At first glance, the two read more like critics than adherents of the tradition. Yet placing Burke and McKeon's writings from the 1920s to the late 1950s in the context of their development reveals a shared project aimed at reforming pragmatism. While pragmatists such as John Dewey and Sidney Hook alleged a conceptual fidelity between the scientific method and democratic processes such as public debate, Burke and McKeon questioned this link. Metaphors drawn from science, they

While Richard Weaver, R. S. Sams, director of English in the College during Ward’s tenure, created the useful tensions for these positions to emerge.

In her well-known piece on Walter Benjamin, Hannah Arendt wrote that “posthumous fame… seems to be the lot of the unclassifiable ones.” It is achieved by “those whose work neither fits the existing order nor introduces a new genre that lends itself to future classification.” If she is right, then there may be some hope that Richard McKeon will one day have his moment. For McKeon (who was, in fact, a friend of Arendt) is eminently unclassifiable. Born in 1900, he studied philosophy both with the great French medievalist Étienne Gilson and with John Dewey. He was a twentieth-century American pra

Abstract This article proposes a model of social design inquiry directed toward shaping shared societal goals. Drawing on Dewey and McKeon, the approach is based on means-end evaluation and communication in plurality. This presents a response to the double challenge of dealing with conflicting aspirations for the future and the current need to balance differences in perspectives. The social design inquiry model provides the basis for meliorism in design insofar as it offers a way of working through these challenges by making use of imagination and deliberation.

The view that philosophers take of their art and craft changes when they remember that philosophy is not merely descriptive but is also performative. To use J. L. Austin's vocabulary, this change occurs when philosophers admit that their writings have illocutionary and perlocutionary, as well as locutionary, import. Any proposition is at once a judgment made by a thinking person and an expressive utterance presented to an audience; any argument is rational persuasion (even when it is quoted in a logic textbook). The article takes the distinction between public and private speech in the areas of public employment and defamation, where the leading cases are Connick v. Myers and Dun & Bradstreet v. The thrust of the article is to formulate a clearer definition suitable for use by jurists and lawyers in First Amendment free-speech cases by resorting to three writers of philosophical bent who have addressed the que

Abstract John Locke’s classic treatment of the question of property is presented in chapter 5 of his Second Treatise of Government. For Locke, as for his seventeenth-century contemporaries, the question of property is the problem of acquisition. Agreement on this single problem, Richard McKeon has argued, distinguishes the writing of this period from traditional discussions of property-oriented to the twin problems of acquisition and of use, in the case of Plato and Aristotle, and only to the problem of use in the case of medieval thinkers-and constitutes the hallmark of modern theories of pro

This chapter examines perceptions of federal world order by focusing on a group of American and European émigré intellectuals in the United States who formed the Chicago Committee to Frame a World Constitution Draft (1945–1948). The Chicago Committee, led by Robert M. Hutchins, Richard McKeon, and Giuseppe Antonio Borgese, united leading intellectuals and scholars concerned with the crisis of world order after the atomic bomb. Theirs was a sustained intellectual attempt to delineate the theoretical foundations for a world federation and global government, and cement them in a constitutional do
