Abstract:

Syftet med denna undersökning är att genom en komparativ studie med utgångspunkt i teorier om dialogicitet, hyptertextualitet och transformation, analysera förekomsten av grekisk mytologi i The Lightning Thief (2005) – vilken påverkan dessa har och hur de tar sig uttryck i Riordans roman. De grekiska myterna i The Lightning Thief har jämförts med de som beskrivs i Grekisk Mytologi (1977) av Giovanni Caselli och Michael Gibson, En introduktion till grekisk mytologi (1989) av David Bellingham, samt Ovidius Metamorfoser (8 e.Kr.). Resultaten visar att de grekiska myterna har en förklarande funktion och agerar inspiration för Riordans egen berättelse. Likväl har författaren flyttat över de grekiska gudarna i myterna till The Lightning Thief och utgått från dem som modeller för framställningen av hans egna karaktärer. Dock har Riordan anpassat och moderniserat både myterna och gudarna för att de ska passa in i den värld som författaren själv har skapat.

Abstract:

L'œuvre de Rick Moody échappe à toute tentative de catégorisation générique, elle est à la croisée de styles qui s'entrechoquent et se heurtent pour donner naissance à une prose hétéroclite. Cette fiction protéiforme n'en demeure pas moins traversée par la répétition d'un motif invariant : l'accident. C'est le paradoxe de cette observation qui constitue le point de départ de cette thèse. Comment l'accident, dont le surgissement paraît toujours fulgurant, instantané et unique, peut-il se voir répété, décliné et transformé en un principe structurant qui préside à la composition de l'oeuvre de Rick Moody ? Pour répondre à cette question, il faut nécessairement changer le présupposé sur lequel repose la définition de l'accident pour qu'il ne soit plus seulement envisagé comme ce qui arrive de manière accidentelle mais pour que soit révélée également sa dimension essentielle. Cela revient à proposer l'hypothèse que l'accident est toujours déjà là, qu'il est ontologique. Ce changement de perspective, rendu possible par une manipulation temporelle, encourage, sur le plan de l'analyse littéraire, une étude de la temporalité de l'accident. Son surgissement induit plus largement la question de la représentation de la réalité tandis que sa répétition autorise son inscription dans une durée. Provoquant toujours une rupture, la temporalité de l'accident est double car elle a la possibilité à la fois de mettre un terme et de faire éclore un nouveau début. L'accident crée des formes et des cycles, il surgit, dure, détruit, mais aussi régénère.

Abstract:

Maintaining phosphorus (P) fertility in northern Great Plains (NGP) dryland organic cropping systems is a challenge due to high pH, calcareous soils that limit P bioavailability. Organic P fertilizers, including rock phosphate (RP) and bone meal (BM) are sparingly soluble in higher pH soils. Certain crops species have demonstrated an ability to mobilize sparingly soluble P sources. Objectives of this project were to 1) evaluate the effect of green manure (GM) crops and organic P fertilizers on the P nutrition of subsequent crops, and 2) investigate P fertility differences between organic and non-organic cropping systems. A two-year cropping sequence was conducted on an organic farm in north-central Montana (mean pH=6.6; Olsen P=16 mg kgâ»Â¹). Spring pea (Pisum sativum L), buckwheat (Fagopyrum esculentum L.), yellow mustard (Sinapis alba L.) and tilled fallow were fertilized with 0, 3.1 and 7.7 kg P haâ»Â¹ as RP, grown to flat pod stage and terminated with tillage. Winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) was grown on these plots in year two. Phosphorus uptake of winter wheat was enhanced (P>0.05) by RP following buckwheat only (P=0.02) at 7.7 kg P haâ»Â¹ compared to 0 P. Results indicate buckwheat can enhance P in a subsequent crop. A greenhouse pot experiment in a low P soil (Olsen P=4 mg kgâ»Â¹) consisted of four green manures; buckwheat, spring pea, wheat, and a non-crop control fertilized with 7.0 and 17.5 kg available P haâ»Â¹ as RP, 13.0 and 32.5 kg available P haâ»Â¹ as BM and 10 and 25 kg available P haâ»Â¹ as monocalcium phosphate (MCP). Green manures were harvested, dried, analyzed for nutrient content, and returned to pots. Pots were seeded with wheat. Phosphorus uptake in wheat following all crops was enhanced by MCP (P<0.05). Phosphorus uptake of wheat following buckwheat was enhanced by all P sources over the control. Buckwheat demonstrates the capacity to increase the availability of organic P fertilizers. Soil sampling of organic and non-organic no-tillage (NT) cropping systems was conducted in two separate studies to determine differences in P availability between management systems. Soil analysis determined available P tends to be lower in non-fertilized systems.

Cette thèse s’intéresse à la manière dont l’écriture dans les nouvelles de Rick Bass est intimement liée aux modes d’être des animaux. L’esquive, le mutisme, la souffrance silencieuse ou bien encore la capacité de régénération des animaux mettent l’écriture au défi et l’entraînent à se renouveler. L’auteur évite en effet toute prise prédatrice du langage sur les mondes animaliers et instaure une coïncidence entre son écriture et les « styles » des animaux. Les traces descriptives, les comparaisons inattendues et les variations rythmiques ou sonores donnent à éprouver la présence animalière et disent l’altérité et la vulnérabilité des espèces que les narrateurs et les personnages chassent, rencontrent ou côtoient. Bass met ainsi en œuvre un processus d’approche simultanément physique et scriptural qui permet non seulement de réinventer le mode descriptif, mais aussi de renouveler nos conceptions de l’animal et notre relation au monde non-humain. Cette étude de la représentation animalière dans les nouvelles de Bass tente ainsi de montrer comment la structure et la substance de l’écriture fictionnelle revêtent un rôle essentiel, éthique, politique et idéologique, au sein d’un combat éminemment militant et écologiste
This dissertation examines the manner in which the ways of being of animals have a shaping influence on the writing of Rick Bass’s short stories. The animals’ elusive presence, muteness, silent suffering, and capacity for regeneration challenge the writing and renew it. Indeed, far from trying to intellectually capture the worlds of animals with language, Bass creates some coincidence between his discourse and the “styles” of animals. The descriptive traces, surprising images, and rhythmic or sound variations make the reader feel the presence of animals and transcribe the otherness and the vulnerability of the species that Bass’s narrators and characters hunt, meet, or live with. Rick Bass thus creates a scriptural and physical approach that allows him to redefine the descriptive mode and to reinvent the relations between man and the nonhuman world. This study of the representation of animals in Rick Bass’s short stories thus tries to show how the structure and the substance of fictional writing play an essential role at the ethical, political and ideological levels in an outstandingly activist and environmental fight

Abstract:

Den här uppsatsen analyserar mytanvändningen i Rick Riordans bokserie om Percy Jackson med syfte att uppenbara kopplingar till dagens miljö- och klimatproblematik. Fokus placeras på bokseriens införande av antik grekisk mytologi och de ekokritiska analysmöjligheter som det skapar. Analysen utgår ifrån den ekokritiska teorin bl.a. med begrepp som antropocentrism, ekocentrism, och dikotomin natur - kultur. Analysen genomförs genom en närläsning av karaktärernas dialog och agerande för att utröna de olika perspektiv på miljökrisen som presenteras. Dessa förs sedan samman i en slutgiltig diskussion kring bokens ekokritiska aspekter och de samhällskritiska budskap som karaktärer och läsare ges. Uppsatsen resulterade i slutsatsen att en sorts samhällskritik ligger som bakgrund genom Riordans bokserie. Användningen av den antika mytologin uppenbarar dagens enorma miljöproblematik och de olika synsätt som finns inom miljörörelsen bl.a. genom de miljöer som beskrivs och karaktärernas utspel. Miljöerna som beskrivs är främst urbana samt nedskräpade och smutsiga. Platser där mytologiska varelser inte längre kan leva. Karaktärerna uttrycker en oro och en sorg över mänsklighetens destruktiva påverkan på sin omgivning och deras agerande visar på den riktning som Riordan önskar se och mana mot. Bokserien mynnar ut i en önskan om en framtida värld där människan lever på ett hållbart sätt tillsammans med naturen.

While the use of Native and non-Native elements in recent American Indian art is well documented, the work of contemporary Northwest artist Rick Bartow is frequently discussed almost exclusively in terms of biography. This has led to what is arguably a one-dimensional view of the artist and his work. My project is an attempt to frame this acclaimed artist within a new context: that of his purposeful use of cultural hybridity as a vehicle to explore his own postcolonial identity. My thesis locates this aspect of Bartow's work within a larger critical examination of how a mix of Native and non-Native iconography is used by some artists of American Indian descent to critique the status and reception of indigenous art in the context of Western art history. Bartow's on-going collaboration with Japanese Master Printer Seiichi Hiroshima exemplifies how Bartow's innovative use of the signs and symbols of other cultures endeavors to shift the language used to discuss American Indian art.

Negli ultimi anni le industrie televisive e cinematografiche hanno visto un rapido ed enorme sviluppo, tanto da essere ormai considerate parte dell’ambiente pubblico quotidiano. Questo sviluppo ha portato ad una diffusione molto maggiore di film e serie televisive in tutto il mondo, e di conseguenza la necessità di dover tradurre ed adattare sempre più materiale nel miglior modo possibile è cresciuta in modo esponenziale. Fortunatamente, grazie a delle circostanze che hanno cambiato gli interessi del pubblico, la traduzione audiovisiva ha acquisito sempre più importanza nel panorama della traduzione ma anche in quello culturale. Nonostante ciò, questo campo della traduzione è ancora poco approfondito, a causa della sua complessità e delle difficoltà che comporta. Due delle principali modalità di traduzione incluse nella traduzione audiovisiva, e quelle di cui si parlerà in questo elaborato, sono la sottotitolazione e il doppiaggio, due modalità che possono sembrare simili ma che in realtà offrono delle problematiche molto diverse fra loro. Nei primi due capitoli, verranno analizzate le due modalità di traduzione, sia singolarmente che ponendole a confronto, nel terzo capitolo si parlerà dello humour e delle sue possibili traduzioni, mentre nel quarto capitolo verrà proposta un’analisi della serie televisiva cult Rick and Morty, analizzandone le tematiche e le scelte traduttive fatte dalla piattaforma Netflix nelle versioni sottotitolate e doppiate in italiano.

Abstract:

Uppsatsen analyserar tre centrala karaktärer samt tre mindre framträdande bipersoner i Rick Riordans bok Född till hjälte (2018). Syftet med analysen är att se hur karaktärerna beskrivs i boken och om de beskrivits stereotypiskt manligt eller kvinnligt, samt varför de är beskrivna på det sättet. Uppsatsen utgår ifrån olika perspektiv på genus, normer, manligt och kvinnligt samt vad som är typiskt för fantasygenren. Analysen visar att tre av de sex karaktärer som analyserats på något sätt bryter mot de stereotypiska könsnormer som beskrivs i arbetet. De resterande tre framställs med tills största del antingen manligt eller kvinnligt kodade egenskaper. En avslutande del kring hur man kan arbeta med litteratur och genus i skolan avlutar uppsatsen.

Orchestral experimentations using electronic keyboards and their resources have been the focus of my work for more than 20 years. The objective of this study is to evaluate the functionality of orchestral experimentations through the analysis, arrangement and demonstration of the piece Sir Lancelot and The Black Knight, written by Rick Wakeman, an English musician. The theoretical aspect of the research was developed through literature review, regarding the evolution of the electronic keyboards, the social, political and cultural environment from the 50s to the 80s when appeared the Rock Progressive and the historical basis about the legend that inspired the studied piece. The analysis had been guided by the Modelo Tripartite of Jean Molino according to Jean-Jacques Nattiez and, mainly for the Sistema de Análise de Arte Comparada (SAAC) of Sandra Loureiro de Freitas Reis. This study intends to make possible the use of the electronic keyboards as an orchestral laboratory, demonstrating the use of the electronic resources associated to the knowledge acquired in the Academy.
Experimentações orquestrais, utilizando teclados eletrônicos e seus respectivos recursos, tem sido o foco do meu trabalho há mais de 20 anos. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a funcionalidade deste procedimento, mediante análise, arranjo e demonstração da peça Sir Lancelot and The Black Knight, de autoria do tecladista inglês Rick Wakeman. O aspecto teórico da pesquisa foi desenvolvido através da revisão de literatura, recorrendo à evolução dos teclados eletrônicos, o ambiente sócio-político e cultural dos anos 1950 a 1980, quando surgiu o Rock Progressivo e os fundamentos históricos sobre a lenda que inspirou a peça estudada. A análise foi norteada pelo Modelo Tripartite de Jean Molino segundo Jean-Jacques Nattiez e, principalmente pelo Sistema de Análise de Arte Comparada (SAAC) de Sandra Loureiro de Freitas Reis. Este estudo pretende viabilizar o uso do teclado eletrônico como um laboratório orquestral, demonstrando a utilização dos recursos eletrônicos associados aos conhecimentos musicais adquiridos no meio acadêmico.

Syftet med denna uppsats är att undersöka berättarna och narraterna i Rick Riordans The Lightning Thief (2005) och The Lost Hero (2010), samt att se vilka implikationer de har på berättandet i sig självt. Uppsatsen fokuserar på en komparativ undersökning av romanerna i fråga, och gör allt detta från en narratologisk utgångspunkt. Det narratologiska perspektivet kommer framför allt ifrån Gérard Genettes Narrative discourse och hans termer extra-, intra-, hetero- och homodiegetiskt berättande. Studien av narraten gör detsamma men med Gerald Prince artikel ”Introduction to the Study of the Narratee” i Reader-response criticism: from formalism to post-structuralism. För ett bredare perspektiv på flera, både nyare och äldre, narratologiska studier använder uppsatsen också Manfred Jahns ”Narratology 2.1: A Guide to the Theory of Narrative”. Genom analysen kan man utläsa att The Lightning Thief antar ett homo- och extradiegetiskt berättande med en specifik grupp av narrater. Detta kontrasteras med The Lost Heros hetero- och extradiegetiska berättande med en grundnarrat utan uppenbara kännetecken. I förlängningen kan man också upptäcka att det finns en skillnad mellan berättarens och narratens förhållande till en verklig läsare och hur, speciellt i The Lightning Thief, läsaren är tvingad att fundera på hur den relaterar till både narraten och berättaren.
This paper aims to study the narrators and the narratees in Rick Riordan's The Lightning Thief (2005) and The Lost Hero (2010), and to see what implications they have on the narrative itself. The paper focuses on a comparative examination of the novels in question and does all this from a narratological standpoint. The narratological perspective first and foremost comes from Gérard Genette's Narrative discourse and his terms extra-, intra-, hetero-, and homodiegetic narrative. The study of the narratee does the same but with Gerald Prince's article "Introduction to the Study of the Narratee" in Reader-response criticism: from formalism to post-structuralism. For a wider perspective of several, both new and old, narratological studies the paper also uses Manfred Jahn's "Narratology 2.1: A Guide to the Theory of Narrative". Through the analysis, one can gather that The Lightning Thief takes on a homo- and extradiegetic narrative with a specific group of narratees. This is contrasted with The Lost Hero's hetero- and extradiegetic narrative with a "zero-degree narratee" that has no apparent characteristics. By extension, one can also notice that a difference lies with the narrator's and narratee's relationship to an actual reader and how, especially in The Lightning Thief, the reader is forced to figure out how it relates to both the narratee and the narrator.

Abstract:

A growing number of Community Artists are doing work with potential relevance to the field of historic preservation. They have seen a need for action in low-income communities and communities of color that are losing their historic, physical, and social character through dilapidation, redevelopment, and displacement. These artists have found nontraditional ways to bolster communities while preserving neighborhood buildings, histories, and social structures. This thesis analyzes three community art case studies as a means to evaluate changes proposed to our current preservation system by leaders in historic preservation concerned with issues of equity and social justice. This study finds that these projects offer many useful examples for preservationists interested in better serving underrepresented communities through the field of historic preservation.

Abstract:

This study is a research on how dystopian features are expressed within different genres. The purpose is to discuss films that contain dystopian features in relation to genre and to examine if there are shared conventions in the films that can make dystopia a film genre on its own. The theoretical base includes genre theory and Rick Altman’s semantic/syntactic approach to film genre. Five films from different genres, all produced within the time period of 2000-2010, are analyzed with a semantic/syntactic approach to genre and then discussed in relation to dystopia and prior research. By using a semantic/syntactic approach to film genre it is possible to identify shared conventions. Only by using a co-ordinate semantic/syntactic approach is it possible to fully understand the interaction between conventions within a genre. The result shows that there are conventions that are characteristic for dystopia and dystopia can thus be considered a subgenre. The films analyzed in this essay share conventions characteristic for dystopia but also offer variation in form of, for example, theme. The subgenre dystopia therefore offers something familiar but also variation which is central in film genre. The analysis also shows that there are symbols that carry meaning within these films which implies that they have a common iconography.

Abstract:

Literature is an important part of the curriculum of Swedish secondary school and The Lost Hero by Rick Riordan is a popular novel among teenagers in Stockholm. This creates an opportunity to look closer at the novel, and to investigate the narrative’s discussion of the female, and in this particular case, its depictions of the female characters. This essay will show that by reading the novel with a feminist approach, inspired by the work of Luce Irigaray, the narrative reveals cultural aspects that might work well as a ground for discussions in the classroom. This essay considers how the narrative allows for opportunities of female resistance. Without replacing the male on the frontier of adventure, and without betraying their femininity, the female characters of the novel manage to change the power dynamic of how they are perceived. The female protagonist, Piper, works as a gatekeeper for the female resistance, and eliminates – for the cause – unbeneficial female behaviours. A feminist approach is beneficial to the diversity that is expected in Swedish secondary school. In addition to already existing research on Riordan’s work, this essay helps justify why The Lost Hero is a good literary alternative for the classroom.

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to examine how physical and mental metamorphoses affect the perception of the self. To do this I study the literary characters Apollo (The Hidden Oracle, by Rick Riordan) and Edward Cullen (Midnight Sun, by Stephenie Meyer), both of whom experience these different kinds of metamorphoses. I approach this problem with the help of philosophy of mind and, more specifically, the mind-body problem as well as the problem of personal identity. Amongst other things, I find that the physical metamorphoses are what enable and initiate the mental ones. I also discover that one of the biggest impacts on personal identity and the self comes from whether the characters are immortal or not.

The working cowboy remains part of the contemporary culture of Texas. A visual record of him appeared early in the state's history, in daguerreotypes, followed by representations in contemporary black and white as well as color photographs, film and video. Although the way of life for the Texas cowboy has changed, it remains a thriving part of the Texas economy, society, and culture. Moreover, the image of the cowboy has permeated popular culture and fine art. This paper explores what late twentieth century popular culture and fine art images of the cowboy signify, emphasizing aspects of how they signify in relation to an existing tradition of photographic representations. Using Barthes' "Myth Today," it considers how the documentary aspect of early photographic representations of cowboys is transformed in contemporary popular culture and fine art to become mythology, for example, by the exaggeration of features of dress to connote ideals allegorically.

The actual prevalence of arterial hypertension in adolescents is still a matter of controversy, with rates ranging from 1% to 10%. In order to assess this prevalence and therisk factors for arterial hypertension, 5174 adolescents (13 to 18 years) attending public and private schools in a 350,000 inhabitant Brazilian city were screened. One week before the first visit, informed consent was signed and a questionaire to be answered by parents was given. In visit one, blood pressure, height and weight were measured at schools and the questionaire was collected. Blood pressure measurement was done following recommendations of the 1996 Update on the 1987 2nd Task Force Report on High Blood Pressurein Children and Adolescents. Adolescnets with blood pressure equal or above the percentile 95th for age, height and sex were refered for a second and third visit at the medical office. Adolescents with abnormal blood pressure at visit one and in only one more visit were considered as labile arterial hypertension and individuals with abnormal blood pressure in all three visits were considered hypertensive.There was 0,7% (35) of hypertensive adolescents (30 with sistolic hypertension and 5 with diastolic hypertension) and 1,4% (75) of labile hypertension. When the hypertensive population (age 15 ± 1 year) was comparedto the normal blood pressure adolescents (age 15 ± 2 years) a greater body mass index (29 ± 6 versus 21 ± 4, p< 0, 00001), a higher percent of body mass index above then normal (77% versus 13%, p<0,00001), a higher rate of males ( 80% versus 38%, p<0,0001) and a statistically higher rate of history of previous nephritic or nephrotic syndrome was found in hypertensive adolescents. There was a trend to low family income in hypertensive adolescents (20% versus 9,7%, p=0,076). There was no difference between birth weight (low than 2,500g), black race, salt consuption, sports practice and positive parents history for hypertension between the two groups. In conclusion, a methodologically adequate survey using a large sample found a smaller prevalence of hypertension in adolescents than previous studies. Hypertension was related to overweight and obesity, male gender, previous history of nephrotic or nephritic syndromes and likely to lower social economical level. The significant amount of labile hypertension reinforces the need for a careful evaluation before the diagnosis of hypertension can be made in adolescents.

Agrichemicals have been misused by rice farmers in Vietnam for a long time. This thesis has studied the rice farmers’ knowledge, risk awareness and risk perception to get an understanding of the rice farmers’ agrichemical management. 15 rice farmers in An Giang province in the Mekong Delta, Vietnam were interviewed in 2015 when the winter-spring rice was cultivated. Field method Contextual Inquiry was used to observe and interview the rice farmers. The rice farmers in Mekong Delta, Vietnam think that they are exposed to a medium risk when handling pesticides. They think that pesticides are the most effective pest controlling method. They do not use any protective gear because the weather is to hot which makes the protective gear uncomfortable to wear, even though the majority of the farmers have experienced health effects. The farmers overuse agrichemicals. The rice farmers can increase their gross income if they start using agrichemical more responsible. The majority of the farmers do not follow recommendations established in research. The Vietnamese government have a big responsibility to implement new laws to create a healthier and more environmentally sound agriculture.
