Abstract:
Type specimens of cyphelloid fungi described by Johannes Rick kept at Herbarium PACA (São Leopoldo, Brazil) were studied, described, illustrated and their species names were updated when necessary. Two invalid names, Cyphella grisea Rick and Solenia minima Rick, are reduced to synonyms of existing names, Lachnella subfalcispora D.A. Reid and Henningsomyces minimus (Cooke & W. Phillips) Kuntze, respectively. Cyphella congregatissima Rick, Glabrocyphella rubescens Rick, Solenia pezizoidea Rick and Theleporus griseus Rick are combined to Seticyphella Agerer, Henningsomyces Kuntze, Maireina W.B. Cooke and Resupinatus Nees, respectively, with the last requiring a new name, Resupinatus rickii. Descriptions, color photographs of basidiomes, and line-drawing illustrations of microstructures from the examined material are given.

Abstract:
Abstract Previous studies have shown that inhibition of receptor-interacting serine/threonine kinase (RICK) (also known as RIP2) results in amelioration of experimental colitis. This role has largely been attributed to nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain 2 (NOD2) signaling since the latter is considered a major inducer of RICK activation. In this study, we explored the molecular mechanisms accounting for RICK-mediated inhibition of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). In an initial series of studies focused on trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-colitis and dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-colitis we showed that down-regulation of intestinal RICK expression in NOD2-intact mice by intra-rectal administration of a plasmid expressing RICK-specific siRNA was accompanied by down-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine responses in the colon and protection of the mice from experimental colitis. Somewhat surprisingly, intra-rectal administration of RICK-siRNA also inhibited TNBS-colitis and DSS-colitis in NOD2-deficient and in NOD1/NOD2-double deficient mice. In complementary studies of humans with IBD we found that expression of RICK, cellular inhibitor of apoptosis protein 2 (cIAP2) and downstream signaling partners were markedly increased in inflamed tissue of IBD compared to controls without marked elevations of NOD1 or NOD2 expression. In addition, the increase in RICK expression correlated with disease activity and pro-inflammatory cytokine responses. These studies thus suggest that NOD1- or NOD2-independenent activation of RICK plays a major role in both murine experimental colitis and human IBD.

Abstract:
Abstract RICK, a serine-threonine kinase, functions downstream of the pattern-recognition receptors Nod1 and Nod2 to mediate NF-kB and MAPK activation in response to specific microbial stimuli. However, the function of RICK in the recognition and host defense of Gram-negative bacteria remains poorly understood. We report here that infection of wild-type and RICK-deficient macrophages with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli, elicited comparable activation of NF-kB and MAPKs as well as secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines. However, production of IL-6 and IL-1b induced by these Gram-negative bacteria was impaired in RICK-deficient macrophages when the cells were previously stimulated with LPS or E. coli. The diminished pro-inflammatory response of RICK-deficient macrophages to bacteria was associated with reduced activation of NF-kB and MAPKs. Importantly, mutant mice deficient in RICK were less susceptible than wild-type mice to P. aeruginosa infection when the animals were previously stimulated with LPS. The reduced lethality of RICK-deficient mice infected with P. aeruginosa was independent of pathogen clearance, but was associated with diminished production of pro-inflammatory molecules in vivo. These results demonstrate that RICK contributes to the induction of pro-inflammatory responses and susceptibility to Gram-negative bacteria after exposure to LPS, a condition that is associated with reduced TLR signaling.

Abstract:
Nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-containing protein (Nod) 2 is an intracellular pattern recognition receptor, which recognizes muramyl dipeptide (N-Acetylmuramyl-L-Alanyl-D-Isoglutamine: MDP), a bacterial peptidoglycan component, and makes a NF-κB-activating complex called nodosome with adaptor protein RICK (RIP2/RIPK2). Nod2 mutants are associated with the autoinflammatory diseases, Blau syndrome (BS)/early-onset sarcoidosis (EOS). For drug discovery of BS/EOS, we tried to develop Nod2-nodosome in a cell-free system. FLAG-tagged RICK, biotinylated-Nod2, and BS/EOS-associated Nod2 mutants were synthesized, and proximity signals between FLAG-tagged and biotinylated proteins were detected by amplified luminescent proximity homogeneous assay (ALPHA). Upon incubation with MDP, the ALPHA signal of interaction between Nod2-WT and RICK was increased in a dose-dependent manner. The ALPHA signal of interaction between RICK and the BS/EOS-associated Nod2 mutants was more significantly increased than Nod2-WT. Notably, the ALPHA signal between Nod2-WT and RICK was increased upon incubation with MDP, but not when incubated with the same concentrations, L-alanine, D-isoglutamic acid, or the MDP-D-isoform. Thus, we successfully developed Nod2-nodosome in a cell-free system reflecting its function in vivo, and it can be useful for screening Nod2-nodosome-targeted therapeutic molecules for BS/EOS and granulomatous inflammatory diseases.

This issue heralds another changing of the editorial guard at The China Quarterly. In his six years at the helm, Rick Edmonds has done a sterling job of keeping up the scholarly standards of The China Quarterly and has seen the journal through increasingly interesting times: the institutional retrenchments that have hit academic publishing across the board, the switch from Oxford University Press to Cambridge University Press in 2001, and an increasing diversity and volume of submissions. Rick deserves a great deal of credit for all that he has given and done for the journal over the past six years, and I would like to open my statement with an enormous “thank you” to Rick.

Abstract:
This article aims to describe the concept of a growing church according to Rick Warren and its relevance to the Toraja Church of the Ebenhaezer Congregation in Palopo. A growing church according to Rick Warren is living loving one another and doing the preaching of the Gospel. The ideas built by Rick Warren are very relevant and good to be used as a measure for the church to experience growth. Based on the author's observations, within the scope of the Ebenhaezer Palopo congregation there is an inharmonious relationship as a fellowship which can have a negative impact in the midst of the ministry and the congregation. The research method used is a qualitative method using a library approach, observation and descriptive analysis. A growing church is a church that is moved by the Holy Spirit so that it produces fruit according to what has been ordained by God. So that there will be an increase in church members, expansion of ministry, mutual love, fellowship, unity, obedience to the Word of God, extensive evangelism and construction of church facilities. So that the church's goals can be achieved, namely to spread the good news about Jesus Christ and to love God and others.

Abstract:

Abstract:
A small but concerning percentage of completed suicides are seen as having left no clues. The classical case, albeit a literary one, is Robinson's Richard Cory. These people often dissemble, even about their suicide risk. An even smaller group of these individuals present themselves in therapy without communicating a sign of suicide risk. Utilizing an idiographic approach, the case of a young adult male (Rick) is presented. The narrative reconstruction gives voice behind the man's mask. The autopsy reveals a young man who was in deep pain and unable to adjust to life's demands. Rick lacked ego strength, being overly narcissistic and having deeply troubled, symbiotic attachments to his family in a world of interpersonal isolation. In the end, even the help of his therapist, who tried to reach through the mask, was not enough and Rick killed himself. The pain had become unbearable. A few guiding remarks for such cases are offered, noting that therapists must constantly address the dissembling in some suicidal patients.
