Abstract:
Since the mid 19th century, the biogeography of island South-East Asia has been the subject of much study. Early researchers explained many of the species distribution patterns by the rise and fall of sea levels and land. This and the work of other researchers culminated in a theory that emphasized the role of Pleistocene sea level low stands in species evolution. With the advent of newly developed molecular techniques, however, it became clear that many species divergence events had taken place before the Pleistocene and a biogeographical theory focusing on Pleistocene sea level changes was inadequate. In this research, I have developed a new biogeographic model that explains present-day distribution patterns and evolutionary relationships between species. I use this new model to explain 10 ‘mammalian riddles’, i.e. evolutionary or distribution patterns in selected mammal species groups that could not be explained with the existing theories. I developed the new model by analyzing the geological literature for this region, and by mapping palaeogeographical and palaeoenvironmental changes for the last 20 million years. In addition I compiled information on the palaeontological record for the region and on divergence times between taxa using a molecular clock assumption. These phylogenetic data were compared with the palaeomaps to assess whether particular divergence events could be correlated with certain palaeogeographical or palaeoenvironmental changes. The combination of these two information sources has resulted in a much-improved understanding of mammalian evolution in island SE Asia. Using this model it is now possible to relate important palaeoenvironmental events, such as the Late Miocene cooling, an Early–Middle Pliocene highstand, or the emergence and submergence of a land bridge between the Malay Peninsula and Java to evolutionary changes in species. I test the accuracy of the new model by analysing the relationships within several mammal groups using craniometric and molecular analysis. The observed relationships and deduced timing of divergence between taxa could in many cases be explained by the model, which indicates that it is relatively accurate. In addition, with the new model I have been able to find solutions to most mammalian riddles, although these results require further testing. Overall, I therefore believe I have made a significant contribution to the biogeographical understanding of island SE Asia.

Abstract:
"The purpose of this paper is to interpret the riddles of the Exeter Book by reconsidering previous and modern research, claiming that the descriptions of many subjects through different devices offer the reader an insight into Anglo-Saxon sense of playfulness, material culture, literary and ecological consciousness. First chapter analyses riddle genre starting with a historical approach, showing how it could be considered one of the most ancient kinds of literature. In chapter two Anglo-Saxon riddle production and its circulation is investigated. Third chapter has its focus on how the range of different subjects of the Exeter Book riddles provides insight into social relationships. Chapter four and five take into consideration two different approaches, anthropocentrism and ecocriticism, focusing on the meaning of material culture, how Anglo-Saxon interacted with things (non-human objects but also nature) and how interactions affected the concepts of time and modification. The aim is to achieve some knowledge regarding Anglo Saxon perception of life, what it meant for them being inhabitants of the natural world. As a literary genre built upon metaphor, riddles are a perfect example to show how all things shift shape as time unfolds. Riddles solutions have long been object of study and still are under investigation, it is important to not forget the main characteristic of the genre: the fact that it is difficult to solve since it was meant to be a way of entertaining people through the intricacy of the given question. In fact, sometimes riddles do not have a ‘right’ answer, they simply allow for deeper thinking regarding a topic or issue, acknowledging other questions to arise in a critical reading, interrogating many aspects on different levels. Wilford, Sam Milton. "Riddles in the dark? : the human use of caves during the 1st millennia BC and AD across the British Isles." Thesis, Durham University, 2016. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11905/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the significance of the human use of caves across the British Isles during the first millennia BC and AD (c.800 BC- 800 AD). Thus far, work has often focused on individual cave assemblages or has discussed cave-use as an adjunct to wider research as part of specific regional and chronological narratives. Whilst such studies demonstrate the potential importance of caves in the lifeways of past communities, these sites lack an overall context and more work is needed in order to integrate these places within wider narratives of first millennia Britain. As such, this study provides the first comprehensive overview and discussion of the role of caves during the Iron Age, Roman Iron Age and Early Medieval period across England, Wales and Scotland. Using an integrated approach, combining studies of patterns of deposition inside caves with spatial and viewshed analysis of location, this thesis sets out to move away from treating caves as isolated backdrops of activity to examine how these sites, through their morphology and landscape position, influenced human selection and use. It becomes evident that despite cave-use being chronologically and regionally diverse, caves were important sites in many coastal and upland regions, often chosen because of the nature of their morphology and relationship to certain areas of the landscape. Furthermore, similarities in the nature of deposition in caves to that recorded elsewhere in other natural places and archaeological sites, along with the use and construction of manmade subterranean spaces, demonstrates that cave-use was intrinsically linked to wider social concepts of natural places, landscapes and the underground in general. These results enhance our understanding not only of the nature of cave-use during the first millennia but also how these communities perceived the world around them.

Full text
Abstract:
In 2010, Simon Estok observed that, "the most immediate question ecocriticism can ask is about how our assumptions about animals affect the natural environment". In this thesis, I respond to this challenge by generating a sustained conversation between the hitherto surprisingly distinct fields of animal studies and ecocriticism. I do this by formulating a new critical concept, that of the geomorphic animal, which I use to show how literary representations of animals often expose the many complex ways in which they constitute space rather than simply inhabiting it. This, in turn, should make them central to future ecocritical readings. I focus on two periods, medieval and modern; the broad historical and generic scope of this thesis is intended to demonstrate the conceptual validity and robustness of geomorphic readings. Chapter One shows how concerns with death and symbiosis are expressed through the earth-bound activities of the geomorphic animals of the Exeter Book riddles. Chapter Two examines geomorphic whales in texts deriving from two related traditions: the Book of Jonah and the Physiologus. Chapters Three and Four focus on modern theatre, which affords distinctive ways of articulating the spatial implications of geomorphism. Chapter Three discusses the literary representation of museums and zoos in terms of the interpretative complexities generated by staging and spectacle. Chapter Four, focusing on mediation, discusses the interplay between animals, viewpoints and place in theatre, also taking into account particular issues arising from the adaptation of plays into films. This argument paves the way to addressing the geomorphic depiction of marginalised humans and human groups, suggesting the critical potential of geomorphism as a means of furthering feminist and post-colonialist aims.

Abstract:
Baker, Giulia. ""Do you get it?" : an investigation into the different types of ambiguity English-speaking children (aged 6-11) are able to comprehend in verbal riddles." Thesis, Cardiff University, 2017. http://orca.cf.ac.uk/105249/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis used the Incongruity Resolution (IR) Theory of humour (Suls 1972, 1983) as a framework within which to investigate English speaking children’s ability to comprehend different types of ambiguity in verbal riddles. Five types of ambiguity (lexical, phonological, morphological, syntactic and idiomatic) were defined by the researcher based upon the way(s) in which linguistic features embedded within riddle form(s) (ie. their actual wording) contributed to producing an ambiguity. These definitions were then used to investigate participants’ comprehension of verbal riddles. These definitions are recommended for future application in order to overcome previous inconsistencies in types of language phenomena constituting discrete ambiguity types when testing children’s humour development and ambiguity comprehension. Participants comprised sixty children equally divided into three primary school Year Groups: Year 2 (aged 6-7), Year 4 (aged 8-9) and Year 6 (aged 10-11). Comprehension of ambiguities was measured (a) receptively through a multiple choice task in which participants were required to identify an ambiguous punchline and (b) productively through a verbal explanation task in which participants were required to explain their understanding of a riddle containing an ambiguous word/phrase. Comprehension criteria were developed to accommodate the different ways in which participants communicated their understanding of ambiguities. Results were used to identify areas of accelerated development in ambiguity comprehension and to establish whether some types of ambiguity are easier/harder for young children to comprehend. Facility of comprehension was linked to linguistic properties manipulated to elicit humour and to the different processing demands they require. A parallel was drawn between the developing ability to comprehend verbal ambiguities and children’s early language acquisition which itself relies upon the sequential acquisition of increasingly complex language processing skills. Findings from the study were applied theoretically to further understanding of humour development and suggestions were made as to how the final stage in McGhee’s (2002) five-step framework might be further refined. Results were evaluated in order to inform classroom practice and to show how verbal riddles might be used in the classroom to meet stipulated criteria for ‘learning experiences’ and ‘skills development’ as detailed in the new (2015) Primary Curriculum for the teaching of English in Wales – specifically those relating to oracy.

Full text
Abstract:
While many riddles exist in the Anglo-Saxon Exeter Book containing female characters, both as actual human females and personified objects and aspects of nature, few scholars have discussed how the anthropomorphized “females” of the riddles challenge and broaden more conventional portrayals of what it meant to be “female” in Anglo-Saxon literature. True understanding of these riddles, however, comes only with this broader view of female, a view including a mixture of ferocity and nobility of purpose and character very reminiscent of the valkyrie (OE wælcyrige), a figure mentioned only slightly in Anglo-Saxon literature, but one who deserves more prominence, particularly when evaluating the riddles of the Exeter Book and two poems textually close to the riddles, The Wife's Lament and Wulf and Eadwacer, the only two poems with a female voice in the entire Old English corpus. Riddles represent culture from a unique angle. Because of their heavy dependence upon metaphor as a vehicle or disguise for the true subject of the riddle, the poet must employ a metaphor with similar characteristics to the true riddle subject, or the tenor of the riddle. As the riddle progresses, similarities between the vehicle and the tenor are listed for the reader. Within these similarities lie the common ground between the two objects, but the riddle changes course at some point and presents a characteristic the vehicle and tenor do not have in common, which creates a gap. This gap of similarities must be wide enough for the true solution to appear, but not so wide so that the reader cannot hope to solve the mental puzzle. Because many of the riddles of the Exeter Book involve women and portrayal of objects as “female,” it is important to analyze the use of “female” as a vehicle to see what similarities arise.

Abstract:
In Swahili language proficiency is measured in terms of a speakers knowledge and use of methali (proverbs), misemo (sayings), mafumbo (riddles) and vijembe (sharp comments). The aim of the paper is to show the different uses of mafumbo and vijembe. Their meanings are at first sight hidden to the addressee, but understood in the context of their use. Mafumbo can be used as teasing, as circumscription for parts of the body of which it is taboo to speak of, as moral reprimands and warnings, and as a secret language between intimate partners or groups of people. Vijembe - `What cuts more than a knive? - the tongue´ - are used on kanga and in newspapers. An important feature of vijembe is that it always asks for an answer, therefore has a strong aspect of competition.

This study analyses bereavement and melancholia feeling as thematic elements in Lygia Fagundes Telles´s book, A noite escura e mais eu (2009). In this research, we sought to identify death and loneliness representations in some tales of this work. The narrative fiction of chosen tales instigates the unusual and may pervade the social and individual problems that are found in life. The narratives tension brands fortune games that are related to the perception about death and loneliness. This study aims therefore to identify, in this literary production, psychological issues surrounding bereavement and melancholy phenomenon - riddles of life – that the human being seeks to discover. The tales "Boa noite, Maria", "A rosa verde" and "Uma branca sombra pálida", selected for the study reveal reflections on human existence, remarkable feature in Lygia Fagundes Telles´ work. The writer seems to portray, in this collection, through the characters, everyday elements that allow the reader existential questioning and (re) organization of life and society values. Her writings focus on particular moments of life of certain actors who, when in narrative moments, a reality dramatic perception or subjective revelations are brought to consciousness. This process leads the characters to pain and lucidity. The research lets highlight that bereavement and melancholia phenomena are veiled in a cloud of uncertainty that require further development not searching for certainties, but rather in search of understanding, or at least acceptance. Trying to decipher the riddles of life with the look on human insecurities was a challenge.

In recent years, there has been a considerable interest in the molecular organization of biological membranes. It has been hypothesized that self-assembling, freely diffusing, submicroscopic domains consisting of sphingolipids, cholesterol and certain proteins exist and the prevailing view is that those lipid rafts serve as platforms for specific molecular interactions by the preferential exclusion and inclusion of proteins. It was presumed, that in particular viruses make use of plasma membrane lipid rafts to augment the infection process and spread efficiently. However, the exact biological function and physical basis of protein partitioning into microdomains remains an outstanding question in virus biology. In the present study, fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy was used to study lipid raft partitioning of the HIV-1 glycoprotein gp41 by detecting Foerster Resonance Energy Transfer between fluorescently labeled viral and raft marker proteins in living cells. Plasma membrane microdomain association of gp41 was demonstrated and by introducing systematic mutations and truncations in different gp41 motifs, the cholesterol recognition amino acid consensus (CRAC) was identified as the crucial determinant of the lateral sorting. Interestingly, we observed a systematic cell-to-cell variability in our raft related data that suggests underlying cell-biological mechanisms of membrane organization. Moreover, fluorescence polarization microscopy revealed a distinct CRAC requirement for gp41 oligomerization whereas other properties, such as intracellular distribution and expression efficiency were clearly demonstrated to be CRAC independent. Our data provide further insight into the molecular basis and biological implications of the cholesterol dependent lateral protein sorting for virus assembly processes at cellular plasma membranes.

Issaiene, Fatima Zahra. "Littérature orale du Maroc : analyse ethnolinguistique des devinettes." Electronic Thesis or Diss., Sorbonne université, 2023. http://www.theses.fr/2023SORUL106.

Full text
Abstract:
My thesis, entitled "Oral literature of Morocco: ethnolinguistic analysis of riddles”, is based on the analysis of 713 riddles collected in situ in different regions of Morocco. The riddle is a language game that uses ritual formulas and stylistic ornaments to cleverly mask the entity to be guessed. The state of the art is devoted to the place of the riddle within Moroccan oral literature and to a synthesis of previous work on riddles in Morocco, the Maghreb and Africa. I then proceed to a linguistic analysis of this literary genre, studying the composition of the riddle (question/answer, opening and closing formulas, clues leading to the solution, etc.), then its syntactic structure (predication, complex sentences, negation), its semantic richness through the main figures of speech (metaphor, personification, comparison, antithesis, etc.), and its prosodic structure (rhymes, alliteration, assonance, repetition, etc.), which gives it its poetry. The second part of my analysis is strictly ethnolinguistic, describing the culture and values of Moroccan rural society in the past. Certain themes are explored in greater depth than others, such as the image of women in Moroccan society, weaving, the symbolic value of animals and saucy riddles. I believe that the originality of my thesis lies in both the linguistic and ethnolinguistic perspectives, as well as in the morpheme-by-morpheme segmentation of all the riddles used as examples, thus providing a good overview of Moroccan Arabic

Edmunds, Susan. "The English riddle ballads." Thesis, Durham University, 1985. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/7574/.

Full text
Abstract:
The term 'English Riddle Ballad' is taken here to describe the six items in Child's collection of English and Scottish popular ballads which have become known as such: Child numbers 1, 2, 3,45, 46 and 47. All these ballads are in the English language, and all contain some sort of questions which do not have direct answers; beyond this, the group is not a homogenous one in age, place, form or content. For each ballad, as many variants as possible have been assembled and are described chronologically in Appendices. By an examination of the whole corpus of texts, this thesis traces, within the limitations of the material, the history and transmission of each item. At the same time, the various relationships with cultural and historical backgrounds are explored. The tunes have been arranged in groups to help in identifying patterns of transmission. In particular, the nature and effects of the riddling element in each case is investigated, and a separate chapter (8) goes on to compare and analyse these as poetic structures. This chapter also puts forward a definition of riddling based on the mental processes involved, rather than on the linguistic form of the riddle itself; this avoids the problems of former definitions of the genre which exclude much material that is traditionally and instinctively classed as riddle. According to this definition, however, only four of the six 'Riddle Ballads' can be said to contain true riddling elements. A final chapter brings the ballads into alignment with modern anthropological studies of the riddle, describing other contexts in which riddling occurs, and evaluating the achievements of this limited but intriguing genre.

Abstract:
This thesis consists of two parts. Part One is a novel (The Riddle of Turandot), whose central character is a fifty-five year-old-woman and Part Two is an essay entitled The Representation of Older Women in Contemporary Fiction. Feminist theorists argue that it is difficult if not impossible to represent feminine subjectivity within the constraints of a phallocentric language. In my essay I will show that the fictional portrayal of older women is even more problematic in view of ageist attitudes inherent in Western society and directed primarily at women. In fact older women rarely appear in contemporary novels - except as caricatures.

Abstract:
Over the last 40 years, there has been a dramatic increase nationwide in the rate of children being driven to school in a private vehicle in the U.S., exacerbating problems from traffic congestion to childhood obesity. While many studies have focused on walking and cycling for the trip to school, few explore parental decision making and the interaction between all travel modes. This study conducts a survey of parents of children attending six elementary schools in San Luis Obispo regarding their children’s travel to school. It explores factors in mode choice, establishes local travel patterns for children, and describes parents’ decision making and the interaction between driving and alternative modes: walking, cycling, school bus, and public transit. An association is found between child gender and parental permission for walking/cycling and riding public transit without adult supervision. An association is also found between parents’ own activity, walking/cycling and riding public transit, and their likelihood to encourage their children to use these modes. Based on survey findings, the study outlines strategy alternatives and recommends implementing free transit days for families, organizing a community safety audit for transit settings, forming a partnership between San Luis Coastal Unified School District and the City of San Luis Obispo to divert demand for school bus transportation to other alternative modes, and organizing a walking school bus.

Abstract:

Paulson, Jennifer Ellen. "Riddled constructs : a study of musical humour in Emmanuel Chabrier's comic operas." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/39506.

Full text
Abstract:
The music of Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894) has received high praise from prominent twentieth-century French composers, including Ravel, Poulenc, Debussy, and Satie. These composers indicate Chabrier as a venerable figure and a significant influence on early notions of French musical modernism; particularly celebrated is his musical humour, which has long been recognized as a defining and rewarding characteristic of his works. Remarkably, Chabrier’s music disappeared from the performing repertory almost immediately and is hardly known today. My dissertation begins to redress this imbalance by offering analyses of humour-producing musical processes in Chabrier’s comic operas. These works are among the composer’s most celebrated and also offer the most variegated and nuanced expression of his aesthetics of musical humour. Chapter 1 introduces central concepts and methodological concerns, in particular those pertaining to the interdisciplinary field of humour studies. A detailed consideration of generic antecedents prefaces my analyses of Chabrier’s works in the popular genres of opérette and opéra bouffe. Works by Offenbach, Hervé, and Lecocq are discussed in Chapter 2 in order to determine comic and humorous gestures that are characteristic of these genres. In Chapter 3, humour-producing incongruities and disjunctions in Chabrier’s popular operas—the three opérettes, Vaucochard et fils 1er (incomplete, c. 1864), Fisch-ton-kan (incomplete, c. 1864), and Une Éducation manquée (1879), and the opéra bouffe L’Étoile (1877)—are considered with respect to generic expectations. These works are shown to combine characteristic humour techniques with varying degrees of emphasis, demonstrating different facets of Chabrier’s practice as a musical humorist. Chapter 4 offers an investigation of humorous musical discourse in Chabrier’s mature opéra comique Le Roi malgré lui (1887) that is more comprehensive. Adapting concepts developed for the linguistic study of verbal humour, the analyses that I present reveal humour mechanisms in virtually every musical parameter and active on multiple structural and intertextual levels. The sophistication and variety of humour techniques identified recommends the study of Chabrier’s style and aesthetic not only as a conceivable model for the modernist ideals of later generations, but for its own sake, as music with a highly developed language that challenges traditional processes through humour.

Vagdoutis, Nikolaos. "Hans Kelsen and Carl Schmitt in Weimar : a riddle of political constitutionalism." Thesis, University of Glasgow, 2018. http://theses.gla.ac.uk/9076/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis approaches the Weimar constitutional debate by focusing on its most significant participants, Hans Kelsen and Carl Schmitt. It reveals that this debate concerned the constitutional question in the context of the contradiction between the democratic modern state and the capitalist economy. It was in that sense a debate on the 'riddle' that was identified by the young Marx concerning the problem of the political form through which modern societies are regulated, caught between the political question, namely that of political power, and by the social question, namely that of the socio-economic structures of power. In effect the term “political constitutionalism” captures this tension through which Hans Kelsen and Carl Schmitt approached the constitutional question. The historical context of the Weimar Republic is important in order to bring into the light the theories of Kelsen and Schmitt (and, secondarily, of other Weimar theorists who also approached the constitutional question through similar problématiques). Regarding this context, it is, firstly, demonstrated that the Weimar Constitution was a post-traditional constitution that dealt both with the political question (the introduction of parliamentary democracy) and with the “social question” through its “economic constitution”. It is, secondly, demonstrated how the relationship between political and socio-economic power affected, in turn, the constitutional order throughout Weimar by leading ultimately to its structural transformation. This thesis argues, firstly, that Schmitt’s solution to Marx’s riddle dissociated the constitution from its democratic promise in order to protect a concept of constitutionalism that would maintain the 19th century liberal political-economic divide. Hence, it ended up as a theory of “authoritarian liberalism” that legitimized the “structural transformation” of the Weimar constitutional order between 1930-32; secondly, that Kelsen’s solution, while placing emphasis on the association of the constitution with the democratic promise, underplayed the power of the capitalist mode of production to affect both the State and the constitutional order itself. As a result, and although he defended the Republic and the Weimar Constitution, he could not see that the constitution itself was traversed by the power of capital in its entanglement with the mode of production.

Mohd, Roslan Ummu Atiqah. "Stability index for riddled basins of attraction with applications to skew product systems." Thesis, University of Exeter, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10871/16683.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines how novel invariants called the "stability index" as proposed by Podvigina and Ashwin can be used to characterize the local geometry of riddled basins of attraction for both skew and non-skew product systems. In particular, it would be interesting to understand how the stability index behaves on the basin boundary between multiple basins of attraction. Then we can ask this question: How can we identify when a basin is riddled? To answer this, we present three models with the presence of riddled basins. In the first model, we present a skew product system of a simple example of a piecewise linear map. We prove that the riddled basin occurs within a certain range of parameter and calculate the stability index analytically for this map. Our results for the stability index at a point show that for Lebesgue almost all points in the map, the index is positive and for some points the index may be negative. We verify these results with our numerical computation for this index. We also make a corollary claiming that the formula for the stability index at a point can be expressed in terms of the stability index for an attractor and Lyapunov exponents for this map. This suggests that this index could be useful as a diagnostic tool to study bifurcation of the riddled basins of attraction. In the second model, we refer to a skew product map studied by Keller. Previously, Keller computed the stability index for an attractor in his map whereas in this thesis, we use an alternative way to compute the index; that is on the basins of attraction for Keller's map, found by inverting his map. Using the same map, we also verify maximum and minimum measures as obtained in his paper by studying Birkhoff averages on periodic points of Markov map in his system. We also conjecture result by Keller and Otani on the dimension of zero sets of invariant graph (i.e. basin boundary) that appears in Keller's map to a complete range of a parameter in the map. The last model is a non-skew product map which is also has a riddled basin. For this map, we compute the stability index for an attractor on the baseline of the map. The result indicates that the index is positive for Lebesgue almost all points whenever the riddled basin occurs.
