Kuhnel, Jennifer Lynn. "Rigging a horse and rider: simulating the predictable and repetitive movement of the rider." Thesis, Texas A&M University, 2003. http://hdl.handle.net/1969.1/490.

Full text
Abstract:
It is nice to give animators artistic freedom, but having to animate every bounce, sway, and counter-balancing movement of a rider on a horse isn't freedom at all. It is painstaking labor that could easily be prevented with an effective character setup. If an animation piece is only going to have a few shots with a horse and rider, then the trouble of setting up an automated character rig is not practical, but if there are a significant amount of shots with a horse and rider galloping across the prairie, doing death defying stunts, and walking for an extended time into the sunset then there needs to be a way to automate the reactions of the rider to the horse. This thesis focuses on what parts of a horse one can analyze to know at what point a rider will lean forward, bounce up from the saddle, or in any way react to a variety of different horse movements. The automated character setup, or rig, makes animating a rider on a horse much more efficient.

Fonda, Borut. "Bicycle rider control : a balancing act." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2015. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6352/.

Full text
Abstract:
Cycling is increasing in popularity which is accompanied with a higher rate of injuries sustained due to collisions, crashes or falls. A high proportion of these events happen when the bicycle rider loses control of the bicycle. In order to improve bicycle rider control, the skill of riding a bicycle needs to be understood. Therefore, the overall aim of this PhD work was to explore bicycle rider control skills and to examine the effects of different constraints on the control of a bicycle. The first part of this thesis focuses on developing a valid and reliable methodology that can be further used for studying bicycle rider control skill. Firstly, a protocol to determine knee angle during cycling is being developed. Secondly, some technical approaches when studying muscle activity during cycling are being questioned. Lastly, a portable device based on a single angular rate sensor to record steering rate and bicycle roll rate was tested for reliability in an outdoor setup. Second part of the thesis examines the effects on bicycle rider control of three different constraints: 1) expertise, 2) body position and 3) cycle lane design. Results overall showed that all three constraints significantly affect steering and bicycle roll rate.

Abstract:
The Painting in Canada exhibition, held in the entrance foyer of the Candian pavilion at the Montreal World's Fair, Expo 67, was an example of the new cultural identity of a mature nation state that had emerged from its history of imperial subserviance vigorous, independent, and free. The presence of the painting "For Ben Bella" by the Canadian artist Greg Curnoe represented an example of the latest efforts of Canadian artists to develop an artistic voice corresponding to the nationalist euphoria characteristic of English-Canada in the mid 1960's. The exhibition displayed, through a brief overview of the last century of Canadian painting, the traditional struggle of Canadian painters to negotiate the treacherous shoals between the Scylla and Charybdis of internationalism and nationalism. The new interest in presenting a redefined national culture was the outcome of several years of intense planning on the part of the Canadian Liberal Party, under the leadership of Prime Minister Lester Pearson. This period witnessed the introduction of a variety of new national symbols, such as a new flag and a new national anthem, in an effort to prevent the fragmentation of Canada and restore the political fortunes of the Liberal Party which by 1965 had reached their lowest ebb since the Conservative landslide of 1957. Between 1965 and 1967, Canadian culture underwent a massive reorganization in order to more readily facilitate the integration of culture into the political objectives of the Liberals. This meant promoting cultural forms suitable to address a wide variety of regional elites. By encouraging regional cultures with their financial aid and promoting intercommunication between these diverse regions the Canadian government could encourage the growth of elites with allegiances both to their region and the federal state. The United States had pursued the instrumentalizing of culture in its foreign policy following the development of the Cold War and this instrumentalizing was further encouraged by several propaganda defeats by the Soviet Union between 1956 and 1958. To reconceptualize the American propaganda effort to oppose the Soviet Union and the growing problem of wars of liberation in the Third World more effectively. The United States developed strategies of promoting regional elites that could have a degree of independence but whose fundamental loyalties were nonetheless to the United States and the capitalist order. Canada, by pursuing its goal of a pluralist federalism, thus became a willing model of the interdependent yet independent nation state within the American empire. Ironically, the presence of Greg Curnoe's "For Ben Bella" at the Canadian pavilion seemed to contradict both the strategies of the Canadian and American planners by its attack, on Mackenzie King, a former Liberal Prime Minister of Canada, and its support of Third World revolutionaries, such as the Algerian socialist Ben Bella. This thesis will analyze the relationship between "For Ben Bella" and its articulation of a new Canadian cultural identity and the policy objectives of both the Canadian Liberal Party and American foreign policy. The ideology of Expo 67 can be traced to the growing parallels between the Canadian and American governments domestic and foreign policy and their efforts to contradict this political and historical reality in order to maintain the illusion of Canadian sovereignty. Situated at the forefront of the developments to utilize new developments in technology and communications theory, Canada developed a model of the new cybernetic ideology, known as "technological liberalism," that was the culmination of efforts to modernize the Cold War effort of the Free World. Rather than contradicting this historical constellation, Greg Curnoe and "For Ben Bella" represent the dilemma of Canadian culture at that particular moment, trapped within the American empire at the transition point between ‘modern’ and the ‘post modern’ culture.

Senior, John. "Spirituality in the fiction of Henry Rider Haggard." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2004. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002252.

Full text
Abstract:
Neither an unquestioning support for British imperialism nor a personal pre-Jungian philosophy were the driving forces behind Rider Haggard’s beliefs or his literature. These two concerns were secondary to the author’s fascination with the supernatural, a theme prominent in his era, but less so in our own. A declining faith in European religion provided the dominant focal point in Haggard’s work. Although there are important overtones of imperial concern and indeed points of Jungian significance in the texts, these are generally subservient to an intensive wide-ranging spiritual discourse. The place of Haggard’s work in history and its literary merit are thus misunderstood when his spiritualism is not taken into account. No analysis of the author’s work can be complete without first coming to terms with his spiritual ideas and then with their impact on other topics of significance to both the author and audiences of his day. The spiritual or religious aspect of his writing has been largely ignored because of its subtle nature and its relative unfashionability throughout most of the twentieth century in the critical and intellectual climate of the Western world. However, in the Victorian era, under the materialist impact of Darwin, Marx and industrialization, Europe's Christian God was pushed from centre stage, creating widespread spiritual hunger and anguish. In the resulting religious vacuum Haggard's overtures were of particular significance to his audience. In fact, when considered in terms of his immense contemporary popularity, the pervasive presence of spirituality throughout Haggard's works and in his personal writing gives some indication of the subject's enormous importance not only to the author, but to late Victorian society as a whole. In light of this Victorian significance, the spiritual element rises, by its constant presence and persistent foregrounding, to subvert not only the imperial and the Jungian, but even Haggard's overt adventure text by dealing directly with the underlying metaphysical crisis in Western society.

Haq, Ikram. "Fraud detection for online banking for scalable and distributed data." Thesis, Federation University Australia, 2020. http://researchonline.federation.edu.au/vital/access/HandleResolver/1959.17/171977.

Full text
Abstract:
Online fraud causes billions of dollars in losses for banks. Therefore, online banking fraud detection is an important field of study. However, there are many challenges in conducting research in fraud detection. One of the constraints is due to unavailability of bank datasets for research or the required characteristics of the attributes of the data are not available. Numeric data usually provides better performance for machine learning algorithms. Most transaction data however have categorical, or nominal features as well. Moreover, some platforms such as Apache Spark only recognizes numeric data. So, there is a need to use techniques e.g. One-hot encoding (OHE) to transform categorical features to numerical features, however OHE has challenges including the sparseness of transformed data and that the distinct values of an attribute are not always known in advance. Efficient feature engineering can improve the algorithm’s performance but usually requires detailed domain knowledge to identify correct features. Techniques like Ripple Down Rules (RDR) are suitable for fraud detection because of their low maintenance and incremental learning features. However, high classification accuracy on mixed datasets, especially for scalable data is challenging. Evaluation of RDR on distributed platforms is also challenging as it is not available on these platforms. The thesis proposes the following solutions to these challenges: • We developed a technique Highly Correlated Rule Based Uniformly Distribution (HCRUD) to generate highly correlated rule-based uniformly-distributed synthetic data. • We developed a technique One-hot Encoded Extended Compact (OHE-EC) to transform categorical features to numeric features by compacting sparse-data even if all distinct values are unknown. • We developed a technique Feature Engineering and Compact Unified Expressions (FECUE) to improve model efficiency through feature engineering where the domain of the data is not known in advance. • A Unified Expression RDR fraud deduction technique (UE-RDR) for Big data has been proposed and evaluated on the Spark platform. Empirical tests were executed on multi-node Hadoop cluster using well-known classifiers on bank data, synthetic bank datasets and publicly available datasets from UCI repository. These evaluations demonstrated substantial improvements in terms of classification accuracy, ruleset compactness and execution speed.

The present work aims to develop a teaching proposal in mathematics for high school students. The content addressed in the proposal are graphs of functions, especially the graph of the quadratic function: the parabola. The need for greater mathematical rigor in explaining the justification of the quadratic function graph to be a parable has led us to develop a lesson plan proposal with more rigorous mathematical explanations and definitions than are currently presented in textbooks. We used algebraic calculations for the demonstrations and also made use of a practical material, a white board where we have attached a square, and with the use of pins, string and whiteboard brush we can draw the parable taking into account its property. The practical material helps in the explanation as well as visually exemplifies what we want to show with the algebraic calculations. The proposal was presented to the students of two schools, one state public and the other private, which I teach in the city of Viçosa - MG and was also presented to six mathematics teachers, co-workers, five of these teachers from state, municipal and state public schools. private schools of the municipality of Viçosa - MG and a teacher of a state public school in the municipality of Teixeiras - MG.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is concerned with the simulation model of an OPAT dummy rider on a Norton motorcycle in different configured impacts with a rigid barrier. The mathematical equations used in describing the mass-spring-damper-based impacts have been given. The software used in designing the mathematical model have also been outlined. The simulation model was then calibrated against full scale crash tests by means of film analysis and the processed digitised measurements. This led to the investigations into numerical processing of differentiation and integration. A parametric study was also conducted to examine injury to the dummy rider based on some varying parameters. The simulation model was further verified by different configurations and also an introduction of an airbag. Finally, the model was extended to a HYBRID3 dummy rider on the same motorcycle in different configured impacts with a motor car. It is hoped that after the validations and verifications have been performed to examine the robustness of the simulation model, it can assist in the analyses of motorcycle impacts with the less frequent need of conducting a full scale crash test, so that safety design of a motorcycle can be established.

The Brazilian semi-arid region that occupies significantly the Northeast portion is one of the most populated areas of Brazil. However, much of the population still doesn?t have access to water. Public policies and government programs aimed at this region are still far from pro-moting decentralization for the democratization of access to water. Historically, State action, when present, tried to prioritize the construction of large works of water reservoirs, which ended up strengthening the so-called "drought industry". At the end of the 1990s, in the midst of a great period of drought in the Brazilian semi-arid region, several civil society entities come together to create the Articulation of the Brazilian Semi-Arid (ASA). The institution was to coordinate actions to coexist with the Semi-Arid region among them and to democra-tize access to water, which was done mainly through the implementation of the One Million Cisterns (P1MC) Program. The proposal provided for the construction of cisterns to capture and store rainwater, with the objective of human supply. This action has been the object of numerous academic and political debates that seek to highlight the limits and possibilities of this policy. Thus, the objective of this research was to carry out an analysis of the P1MC pub-lic policy already in place and, in the implementation phase, with the purpose of understand-ing its capacity as strategies for coexistence with the semi-arid region for farmers, farmers and rural dwellers. Apodi-RN. The research has a qualitative nature, with semi-structured interviews with the technicians linked to the Coordination of ASA Potiguar, as well as with the beneficiaries of the P1MC public policy. The results indicate the program is dependent upon rainfall in the region. If there is little or no rainfall the P1MC is less effective therefore it is necessary to promote access to water for beneficiary families in other ways. It was also found that the P1MC Program contributes to the reduction of the painfulness of women's work, since it is no longer necessary to go to other localities to obtain water for consumption by the family; The P1 + 2 Program also contributes to maintaining small crops in the benefi-ciaries' homes; The implementation of the Programs provided greater organization, as it pro-moted the creation of Community Associations in communities that did not have.

Ingoldian fungi are aquatic hyphomycetes that presents conidia sigmoid or branch and occur in lotic and lentic environment, being easily found in foam of water bodies. Aiming to contribute to the knowledge of the biodiversity of Ingoldian fungi in semiarid region, was conducted an inventory in water bodies of areas of extreme biological importance of the Brazilian semiarid. In a single expedition, samples of foam and submerged leaves were collected in water bodies of four localities in semiarid region (Brejo Paraibano-PB, Serra da Jib?ia-BA, Chapada do Araripe and Serra de Ibiapaba-CE). The samples of foam were collected and packaged in plastic bottles of 250 mL and the submerged leaves were packaged in plastic bags. In ?Laborat?rio de Micologia?(LAMIC), the foam was homogenized and 200 ?L of each sample were transferred to 30 slides, which were exposed at room temperature to evaporation. After evaporation, was addition of one drop of lactic acid and sealed with nail polish. Samples of submerged leaves were subjected to the technique of washing in flowing water and cut into pieces of 1 cm?, that were placed in petri dishes containing distilled sterile water for observation of fungi. The bottles and slides were deposited in the ?Herb?rio da Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana? (HUEFS). The pure cultures were deposited in the ?Cole??o de Cultura de Micro-organismos da Bahia? (CCMB). The first chapter presents all 27 taxa of Ingoldian fungi found in the study, 23 of these taxa present description, geographic distribution, taxonomic comments and illustration; 22 are new records: american continent (3), Neotropics (1), South America (3), Brazil (5), Brazilian semiarid region (7), Cear? (2) and Para?ba (1). The second chapter shows all species of the genus Campylospora with descriptions, comments, geographical distribution, a key to the genus and illustrations. The semiarid rainfall regime is northeastern Brazil is highly variable. Climate processes associated with rainfall are complex and their effects may represent extreme situations of drought or floods, which can have adverse effects on society and the environment. The regional economy has a significant agricultural component, which is strongly influenced by weather conditions. Maximum precipitation analysis is traditionally performed using the intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) probabilistic approach. Results from such analysis are typically used in engineering projects involving hydraulic structures such as drainage network systems and road structures. On the other hand, precipitation data analysis may require the adoption of some kind of event identification criteria. The minimum inter-event duration (IMEE) is one of the most used criteria. This study aims to analyze the effect of the IMEE on the obtained rain event properties. For this purpose, a nine-year precipitation time series (2002- 2011) was used. This data was obtained from an automatic raingauge station, installed in an environmentally protected area, Ecological Serid? Station. The results showed that adopted IMEE values has an important effect on the number of events, duration, event height, mean rainfall rate and mean inter-event duration. Furthermore, a higher occurrence of extreme events was observed for small IMEE values. Most events showed average rainfall intensity higher than 2 mm.h-1 regardless of IMEE. The storm coefficient of advance was, in most cases, within the first quartile of the event, regardless of the IMEE value. Time series analysis using partial time series made it possible to adjust the IDF equations to local characteristics
O regime pluviom?trico no semi-?rido Nordestino ? altamente vari?vel. A an?lise de chuvas intensas ? feita tradicionalmente utilizando as equa??es tipo intensidadedura??o- freq??ncia (IDF).

Abstract:

This study was made to examine how successful elite Swedish equestrian athletes perceived their transition from junior to senior level. The objectives were a) to examine Young Riders perceived demands, resources and barriers in the transition to elite seniors, and b) to examine the riders’ coping strategies, perceived quality and lessons learned from the transition. The study involved six informants (n = 6), including three females and three males (1 event rider, 2 show jumpers and 3 dressage riders). Participants were between 25-31 years of age (m = 27). A semi-structured interview guide was developed for equestrian sport and based on the Athletic Career Transition Model (Stambulova, 1997, 2003) and the Develomental Model (Wylleman & Lavallee, 2004). The results show that participants perceived emotional support as an important resource and had the ability to set long term goals. They used problem focused- and approach-cognitive coping strategies in a successful way in order to manage their perceived demands and barriers during their transition to the senior level.

Abstract:

This thesis will examine the free rider problem in a unique setting: how states compete over gambling revenues. As the economy tightens, states continue to look for revenue streams to supplement their already strained budgets. Gambling is an attractive option for many states, as it is a steady and reliable source of income each month. With appealing funds available, different states have intensified their competition, authorizing new casinos on neighboring state borders to entice out-of-state visitors. States receive money from these visitors but are not responsible for their social problems, which they bring back to their home states. This phenomenon is a modern incarnation of the free rider problem. This paper explores three main questions. To begin, does the gambling market expand with the introduction of a new state's gambling facilities? Next, are states able to successfully reclaim revenues? Lastly, what are the effects of changes in tax rates on state revenues? These questions are examined in two regions. First, the newly authorized slots in Pennsylvania are having a direct impact on the casinos in Atlantic City, NJ. Also, a variety of tax changes in the Midwest states of Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri is shifting revenues among these three states. The free rider problem relating to states and gambling will continue to be an important and relevant issue for years to come

The biodiesel is an alternative to petrochemicals and derivatives because it is produced from renewable sources, as vegetable oils and animal fat, and reduces the level of pollutant emissions in the diesel. The investigation of alternative sources of triglycerides for biodiesel production has been extensively explored. In this work, seeds of 26 of different plant species (Leguminosae, Myrtaceae, Celastraceae, Chrysobalanaceae, Rubiaceae, Rutaceae, Sapindaceae) of the semiarid region of the State of Bahia were collected and the oil extracted for studies as alternative source for the production of biodiesel. The present work selected the most promising plant species for the production of biodiesel, using the chromatography methods CG-MS and CG-FID to identify the fatty acids in the oils, followed by the physical-chemical characterization of the oils from the most promiing species: Syagrus coronata, Dilodendron bipinnatum, (mamoninha) and Magonia pubescens (timb?). Thus, acid index, saponification index, peroxide value, iodine index, and refractive index were determined. Because presents better physical-chemical characteristics, the oil of ?Timb?? was selected for the experiment about the best process conditions to produce ?Timb?? biodiesel in order to improve methyl esters production (% m/m). ?Timb?? biodiesel was produced by methanol route using alcohol/oil molar ratio 8:1, the concentration of catalyst was 0,5 wt%. The values determined for the physical-chemical parameters of the Timb? Methyl Biodiesel (BMT) are within the limits established by the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels ? ANP, except for acid index, total glycerin and kinematic viscosity.

Abstract:
Equestrian sports are unique because they are based on the interaction of the horse-rider dyad. Anecdotal evidence suggests that appropriate mental attributes of the rider contribute considerably towards achieving effective communication between horse and rider. This thesis aims to determine which and to what extent psychological traits and states of equestrian riders play a role in horse-rider performance. Part I of the thesis determines that equestrian riders exhibit a unique personality profile. Personality traits also seem to affect how riders perceive their horses' temperaments. Elite riders show superior abilities to cope with stressful situations, a trend which was examined more closely in part II: Differences in precompetitive levels of arousal and mood states between more advanced and novice riders were determined. Furthermore, intensity levels and directional interpretations of somatic and cognitive arousal were shown to have an effect on competitive performance. Riders' interpretation of their horses' temperament were also shown to be correlated to elements of arousal and competitive performance. Practical implications are that in order to improve horse-rider communication and to achieve optimal performance, less competent riders should develop relevant coping strategies to control levels of arousal. Part III explored the use of and differences in psychological skills at different competence levels in equestrian sports. Elite riders demonstrated more comprehensive coping strategies than non-elite riders. On that basis, a psychological skills training program was developed and administered to amateur riders. Improved competitive performance 'following completion of the program confirmed that psychological skills training can play an important role in equestrian sports. In conclusion, the current thesis provides some evidence regarding the role psychological states and traits play in equestrian sports. Equestrian riders of all disciplines may be well served to spend time honing their own psychological skills in order to optimize their relationship with their horses.

Abstract:

Two distinct studies were undertaken in order to examine the effects that both external weight distribution, and internal, bike-rider interface forces had on cyclists. The first section of the study looked at the bike-rider interface forces, and how they fluctuate during normal cycling; as well as how they vary with changes in rider power output, hand position, and cadence. In order to analyze these changes in isolation, three different studies were undertaken. The studies each examined 10 USAC Category 3 or better riders who were tested for 6 minute trials. Riders were tested with their hands on the tops, drops and hoods, with cadences of 60-90 RPM, and power outputs of 1-4 watts per kg. It was found that for each 1 W/kg power output increase, saddle forces decreased by 5.2 percentage points and bottom bracket forces increased by 3.3 percentage points. Cadence did not affect bike-rider interface forces. Shifting a rider's hands from the hoods to the tops and the drops increased the stem force by approximately 2 and 4 percentage points, respectively.

The weight distribution study examined the effect of different bike fitting procedures on the bike-rider system, front/rear wheel, weight distribution. The study compared 13 amateur and 14 professional riders with four different fitting techniques. It was found that the Retül Fit weight distribution was 44.7%/55.3% front/rear and the Body Geometry Fit was 32.5%/61.5% front/rear. It was also found that the professional fit and the self-fit 40.4%/59.6%, and 38.5%/61.5% respectively, are similar (p=.9239).

Abstract:
Work trips are considered one of public transportation's biggest markets. It is important to understand this market as fully as possible because of the potential for congestion mitigation or air quality improvements, among other things. While much effort has been invested in researching travel on public transit, very little effort has been concentrated in understanding the work travel market. This document attempts to be a comprehensive resource which can provide current information on the persons and trips being taken on public transit for travel to/from work. This research looks at the 2009 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) to examine the difference between work and non-work transit trips and riders, choice and captive work trips and riders, and New York City (NYC) and non-NYC work trips and riders. In addition, transit mode share for work trips across an array of socio-demographic factors is examined. As a supplement, historical trend data utilizing past NHTS/Nationwide Personal Transportation Surveys (NPTS), the American Community Survey, and American Public Transportation Association data is used. The data analysis is primarily descriptive in nature and is performed in SPSS (a statistical analysis software) and then graphed in Microsoft Excel. Interpretation of the results is based upon a comprehensive literature review and the author's knowledge and familiarity in the field of public transit. There were several interesting and noteworthy findings uncovered during this research. In the historical trend analysis, it was discovered that the proportion of transit trips being for travel to/from work has declined since 1983. Further analysis appears to indicate that the decline is being caused by new riders who are making new non-work trips. This comes as the existing work riders and trip numbers appear to be holding steady. More research is needed to confirm this finding and to probe for more specific reasons on why this is occurring. In terms of work transit trips, it was discovered that they tend to be taken on faster modes (such as commuter rail and elevated/subway) resulting in slightly higher in-vehicle speeds than non-work transit trips (11.8 MPH versus 11.2 MPH). The analysis also showed that those commuting via non-transit modes were 20 percent more likely to make a stop on their commute than those that took transit. Of those commuting on transit, riders were more likely to make a stop on their way home from work rather than to work. An analysis of choice and captive riders found that in the 16-24 year old age group, 85 percent of riders were choice riders. This finding could perhaps signify that more young adults are choosing to ride transit. However, this result should be interpreted with caution because of the small sample size and potential data issues with the 2009 NHTS dataset. More research should be carried out in the future to verify these results.

Abstract:

With only four years of mandated state-standards in adult basic education (ABE), very little is known about the influence of state-standards implementation on the unique learning needs of its adult students. Two decades of research on standards-based education in the U.S. K12 system has yielded widely debated results regarding the impact of state-standards on student achievement. Against this backdrop, state-standards implementation within the distinct context of Minnesota ABE was examined in this study, specifically the perceived influence of standards implementation on teacher practices and student engagement in cognitive rigor, as well as the teacher, site, and student characteristics reported to have either supported or challenged implementation. The basic qualitative design was utilized to collect and interpret the perceptions and experiences of its sample of 12 Minnesota ABE teachers from distinct instructional contexts with 12 or more hours of standards implementation training. Data triangulation was utilized for data collection, including an interview and two member checks. The inductive analysis procedure in concert with the constant comparative method was used to analyze the interviews and develop themes and deeper connections based on the theory of complex adaptive systems. The results of the study showed that, overall, participants reported modest changes in their teaching practices that they perceived to have increased their students’ engagement in cognitive rigor. Participants also reported modest changes in student demonstration of learning that indicated increased cognitive rigor. Findings indicated a minimal contrast to the inconclusive nature of the K12 research base in establishing a link between standards implementation and increased student achievement. Furthermore, the findings showed that state leaders should continue to offer robust training and support teacher collaboration.

Abstract: This work aims to analyze the provincial laws of Bahia that were intended to limit the alleged threat posed by freed African people. Similarly, we are interested in the debates surrounding the drafting of these laws and their daily effect on this segment of the population. Referring to national laws, particularly the Constitution of the Empire of Brazil and the Criminal Code of 1830, we will explore the legal situation of freed Africans, in addition to foreigners without citizenship rights, who were both left at the mercy of local restrictive measures. Therefore, we decided to examine the laws made in two stages: laws made before and laws made after the Malês' Revolt of 1835. In terms of security measures that affected the African population, we will analyze the law that ended trafficking on November 7, 1831 in this debate, which contradicted the interests of lords and traffickers of African slaves. This type of trade was not stopped on behalf of peace in the province, but as we shall see, under the argument of the urgency of security, the laws became tougher with the intention to restrict the maximum autonomy of freed Africans, or even remove them completely from the Empire, which was very common through deportations. This work also addresses how these Africans used the legal tools available to them, where possible, to reassess the concept of justice and reverse these laws in their favor

The present research aims to investigate the literary translation activity of the Carioca poet Ana Cristina Cesar, relating her translation work to the critical conjectures and criteria that guide her own poetic writing. Setting specific analysis in "Words" ("Words"), translation of the poem of the North American poet Sylvia Plath. It will start from the discussion of concepts of literary translation sketched by scholars and poet-translators, Rosemary Arrojo (2003), Paulo Henriques Britto (2016), Paulo Rónai (1976), Mário Laranjeira (1993), Henri Meschonnic (2010), Georges Mounin (1963), Paul Ricoeur (2011), Michaël oustinoff (2011), Lawrence Venuti (2002), Roman Jakobson (1970), Paul Zumthor (2018), Breno Silveira (2004), Even-Zohar (2012), Susan-Bassnett (2003) and Leila M. Darin (2015). These concepts will be added by original fragments of the poet Ana Cristina Cesar, who left us about her translation practice in the book "Criticism and Translation" (2016). The critical sense that guided the poet in his choices, in the lexical and grammatical fields, and that marked his conception of literature between the English (starting language) and the Portuguese (language of arrival). Being relevant the research material included, the publications of "Writings in England", translation drafts that were published and their critical production, some of them located in the IMS (Moreira Salles Institute), in Rio de Janeiro

Abstract:

Advanced analytical and computational capabilities are allowing researchers to enhance the model complexity of bicycles and motorcycles in order to understand handling, stability and dynamic behavior. These models allow designers to investigate new frame layouts, alternative materials and different architectures. The structural stiffness of a frame plays a critical role in the handling behavior of a bike. However, the influence of structural stiffness has received limited attention in the existing literature. This study attempts to fill the gap by presenting analytical results that investigate the influence of structural stiffness in conjunction with rider positions on three distinct bicycle layouts. The analytical model consists of four rigid bodies: rear frame, front frame (front fork and handle bar assembly), front wheel and rear wheel. The overall model exhibits three degrees-of-freedom: the roll angle of the frame, the steering of the front frame and the rotation of the rear wheel with respect to the frame. The rear frame is divided into two parts, the rider and the bicycle frame, that are assumed to be rigidly connected. This is done in order to allow the model to account for varying rider positions. The influence of frame flexibility is studied by coupling the structural stiffness of the frame to the governing equations of motion. The governing equations of motion from a benchmark bike in the existing literature have been used, and then modified to accommodate rider positions and frame stiffness. Layouts from the benchmark bicycle, a commercially manufactured bicycle, and a cargo bicycle are used for this study in conjunction with rider positions ranging from a no hands position to a small aero tuck. The results are analyzed and compared with some proven analytical and experimental results in the existing literature. Results indicate that some of the rider positions can play a significant role in influencing the dynamic characteristics of a bike. Structural stiffness is seen to significantly affect the weave mode when the stiffness is reduced substantially. It is observed that the forward and lower rider positions are generally associated with a faster speed for onset of self-stability, that additionally last for a longer range of speeds. Furthermore, addition of a large luggage load to the cargo bike is seen to have a stabilizing effect as well as increase instability sensitivity to stiffness. Overall, it is observed that the inclusion of frame stiffness and an assessment of the distribution of a rider’s mass are important factors that govern the dynamic behavior of a bike, and should therefore be carefully evaluated.

Abstract: This research, as a kind of boat, becomes composition that is launched in a sea in search for a fold. A crease in the line of the outside in which it is possible to invent a habitable inside and and give passage to affections of that which is known as rigor. A rigor that is related to the discipline of Real Analysis, which is included in a large majority of undergraduate courses in Mathematics in our country. Such rigor is shown to be discursively linked to many practices that occur in the formation of mathematics teachers, which greatly influence the way they deal with their own graduation and their professional practices. In our composition, we adopted a flow-writing aesthetic, in which fictional narratives were composed having as inspiration and support experiences experienced by the author himself and by a whole multitude of subjects and works that surround and cross him, in order to build a Thesis without Organs, that is, a composition without prior organization. To this goal, we established closer theoretical alliances with the archaeological thought by Michel Foucault and with the concept of Body without Organs, by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, as well as consonances with theoretical constellations that orbit each of these thinkers. In this way, in the rhizomatic lines composed from couplings, decouplings and interruptions of flow caused in and by the constructed narratives, it was possible to operate in the cracks and think about the concept of Rigor without Orga... The semi-arid Bahia is a very diverse area, with differences not only in climate but also in culture, enabling studies in various areas of knowledge, as well as study of the lexicon that is the window through which a community can see the world (Cf. ISQUERDO, 2007). From the need to explore this lexical inventory, we will address the following question: does the lexicon found in hinterland communities of Bahia's semiarid interior show influences of Galician and / or Archaic Portuguese, ie check if there are in the lexicon used in semiarid Bahia Iberian influences, especially if there is maintenance of so-called archaisms. The existence of this kind of lexicon, especially in the speech of older people, is our initial hypothesis. In this sense, we seek to carry out the survey of backcountry lexicon, checking for influences of the Spanish, Galician, and Portuguese languages, based initially in the corpus of the collection "samples of spoken language in the Bahian semi-arid" UEFS / FAPESB. The research methodology is the quali-quantitavie method. The corpus of data used is part of the database of the research project "Portuguese Language in the Semiarid Bahia." In order to recognize and analyze, in full measure the relevance of the lexicon of the semi-arid Bahia, the decision was made to investigate the unknown and to known about the subject as recognized in the growing literature base for this topic. In this sense, the possibility of studying the Iberian influences within the Bahian semi-arid lexicon means understanding more effectively the great cultural wealth within the the area, culminating in new dialogues for future more watchful eyes of the semiarid cultural source, and hence of its lexical richness. The results indicate that there is maintenance of some archaic terms, especially in the most isolated communities.

The Objective of this thesis was to study experimentally the thermodynamic behavior of the Convective Boundary Layer (CBL) during the dry and rainy period in a semi-arid climate region of the Northeast of Brazil (NEB), with the use of radiosondes on days 16, 17 and 18 November 2013 (dry period) and from 03 to 08 April 2014 (rainy period) in the municipality of Apodi-RN and in the rainy period of 09 to 17 April 2011 in the municipalities of Mossor?-RN and Quixeramobim-CE. They were launched 15 balloons (dry period) and 32 in Apodi-RN and 35 in Mossor?-RN and 36 in Quixeramobim-CE (both in the rainy period). Through radiosondings were collected profile data of atmospheric pressure, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction and Low Level Jets. For surface data in Apodi-RN was used a portable surface weather station to collect data and were calculated the average, maximum and minimum every 10 minutes during 24 hours. It was applied the T-Student test and was found that some weather variables showed statistically significant differences at 5%. To determine the CBL height was applied the profiles method using the potential temperature and it was analyzed three informations from each profile: the average of layer, the value in the base and top. In Apodi-RN, the CBL height was higher in the dry season than in the rainy period, being lowest in the early morning (5:00 HL - Local Time) and highest in the late afternoon 17:00 HL. The potential temperature was slightly higher in the dry season than the in the rainy reaching maximum values at 17:00 HL. In Mossor?-RN and Quixeramobim-CE, the CBL height during the rainy season was shallower, colder and wetter in both sites. The T-Student test was applied both to evaluate the statistical differences between the data by period and by location. The results were shown in the Chapter 4.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to examine some factors that make a human grouse hunter to prolong and increase its hunting effort. The theory of optimal foraging is used for explaining their behavior. The data of this study is collected from a web-based inquiry from 2007 answered by grouse hunters in Sweden. The method that has been used is mainly bivariate statistics and logistic regression analysis. Key findings shows that an experienced grouse hunter has more than 5 times the chance of prolonging hunting effort when grouse density is high, compared to a beginner grouse hunter. On the same time experienced grouse hunters also stop hunting in advance when grouse density is low to a larger extent than inexperienced hunters. Other factors of importance for prolonging the hunting effort for a day are age and the travel distance to the hunting area. A hunter in the age of 35-60 years has got half the likelihood of prolong a good hunting day, compared to a hunter younger than 35 years old. A hunter that has travelled more than 300 km to the hunting area has got half the likelihood of prolonging, compared to a hunter with less than 300 km from its home adress to the hunting area. Conclusions: The result suggests that the behaviour of an experienced hunter is easier to explain by optimal foraging theory than less experienced hunters.

Abstract:
Local governments were constitutionally established in 1976 as bodies democratically elected and currently have a relevant role in Portuguese development. The legal framework regarding the assignment and power transfers to these governments has provided a degree of autonomy in pursuing their objectives and financial management of its resources. Against this background, it seems pertinent to examine the financial management of these governments in order understand the conditions under which citizens electorally reward or punish policies adopted by local governments. Is it the case that voters support financial sound policies pursued by the governments? Or, on the contrary, they prefer reckless financial policies that fail? A possible answer to these questions lies in the so-called financial performance. The analysis of financial performance is a hot topic either to policy makers or researchers and fiscal discipline is a key value in public finance management at the national and local levels. Financial performance may also be an instrument that voters consider at the ballots. Elections are the main accountability instrument, used by voters to evaluate incumbent’s performance. Voters elect incumbents if they regard their performance as satisfactory; otherwise, they elect opponent candidates. In this sense, the objective of this dissertation is to analyze the relationship between several dimensions of financial performance and the prospects of incumbent re-election, over two electoral cycles (2002- 2005 and 2006-2009). Based on public finance and public choice literatures we test some well-known hypothesis such as fiscal illusion and fiscal conservatism of voters. The results suggest that Portuguese voters seem to adopt fiscal conservative attitudes.
