Abstract:
Purpose Cressey’s Fraud Triangle has been referenced in 8,584 studies and academic papers [1] and is a stalwart of training courses for accounting and audit practitioners and fraud investigators. The Fraud Triangle has endured for three decades in the academic and practitioner worlds. This study aims to explore the origins of Cressey’s Fraud Triangle and challenge its practical value to a fraud investigator. Design/methodology/approach This study has developed from analysis of a targeted literature review carried out as part of a wider study into occupational fraud and corruption. Findings Cressey’s name is intrinsically linked to the Fraud Triangle, although he never used the expression during his lifetime. Two of the three motivational factors identified by Cressey (1953) were developed from the earlier work of Svend Riemer (1941), who it is suggested should have equal billing with Donald Cressey for the concepts that led to the creation of the Fraud Triangle. Practical implications The paper illustrates the limitations of Cressey’s Fraud Triangle for practitioners. Originality/value Many academics and researchers have either misunderstood Cressey’s role in the development of the Fraud Triangle or been unaware of its true origins. Although the pioneering work of Riemer is referenced in a 2014 study on the Fraud Triangle by Alexander Schuchter and Michael Levi, to the best of the authors’ knowledge, this paper is the first to identify the influence of Riemer on Cressey’s thinking and the development of the Fraud Triangle.

Abstract:
At low wind speeds the shortest capillary waves appear to be generated hydrodynamically and not by the wind. This phenomenon is investigated using a Hamiltonian representation of the surface wave dynamics. A perturbation technique of Kolmogorov is used to transform away non-resonant, nonlinear interactions. Resonant interactions are treated by the Hasselmann transport equation, applied to the transformed variables. Calculated spectra show reasonable agreement with the observations of Jähne & Riemer (1990).

Full text
Abstract:
This work deals with neural network-based gait-pattern adaptation algorithm for an active orthosis. The proposed device is developed for lower limbs and based on a commercially available orthosis, Figure 1. Active orthoses can be designed for helping physically weak or injured people during rehabilitation procedures [1]. The robotic orthosis Lokomat is being recently used for rehabilitation of patients with stroke or spinal cord injury individuals [2]. Gait-pattern adaptation algorithms are proposed by Riener, et. al [3], considering the human-machine interaction. The algorithms in Riener, et. al [3] were developed for a fixed base robotic system; they can not be applied directly in the proposed orthosis, since no stability of the gait pattern is considered. A trajectory generator for biped robots taking into account the ZMP (Zero Moment Point) criterion is presented in Huang, et al. [4]. This method presents suitable results with smooth and second-order differentiable curves.

Full text
Abstract:
A Rieke diagram [1] is a magnetron characteristic that visualizes the dependence of the generated frequency fg and the net delivered power PL on the load reflection coefficient GR. GR is defined in a specific magnetron-to-waveguide coupling structure called the standard or reference launcher (Fig. 1). The diagram is plotted as a family of isolines of constant fg and of constant PL in the polar diagram of GR. Rieke diagrams are essential in the design of applications without isolators, such as domestic or professional microwave ovens. Constructing Rieke diagrams is tedious, time-consuming and equipment-demanding [2], [3], preventing systematic studies of their dependence on operating conditions, such as anode voltage and its ripple, filament current, mounting repeatability, etc. We have devised a procedure, centering around a high-power automatic impedance matching device (autotuner), which enables fully automatic measurement and plotting of the stated dependences. A block diagram of the setup is shown in Fig. 1. The autotuner, when terminated in a match (waterload), can accomplish a task inverse to impedance matching: realizing any desired reflection coefficient GR. The measurement consists of stepping through a grid of n suitably chosen reflection coefficients GR = xR + jyR, covering a desired area of the polar diagram. Each GR is measured accurately by the autotuner, along with the corresponding fg and PL. Thus, raw data for constructing a Rieke diagram are obtained, the data consisting of a collection of n points {GR, fg, PL}i, i = 1…n, with GR, in general, irregularly scattered in the complex plane. A dedicated MATLAB routine then reads the data, sorts them out to create tabulated functions fg = f(xR, yR), PL = f(xR, yR), approximates these by a 2D spline, and uses the splines to plot smoothed isocontours for chosen constant values of fg and PL, completing thus the desired Rieke diagram construction. We will present details of this procedure as well as real-life examples. Fig. 1. Rieke diagram measurement setup. References Meredith, R. Full text
Abstract:
Compact spinning is a novel concept generated through re-engineering of established ring spinning process by attaching a pneumatic zone to existing ring spinning machine. Compact spinning achieves a remarkable improvement in yarn quality and yarn structure through better utilization of fibre properties. The advantageous yarn characteristics provide better opportunities for cost savings in subsequent processing stages. Another interesting aspect is the possibility of developing new textile products using compact spinning. There are three major manufacturers in the field of compact spinning machines namely, Sussen (Elite spinning), Rieter (Comfor spin), and Zinser (Air-Com- Tex 700). First launch of Elite spinning machine in India faced a setback due to few practical problems like inadequate lubricating film on ring (does not allow the maximum spindle speed to be achieved), higher maintenance cost, higher labour cost and apron clogging due to accumulation of fly. However, with further developments compact spinning will certainly be the future of ring spinning, on account of its higher productivity and yarn quality.
