Abstract The metamorphic series of Filali and the Beni Bousera massif represent the most metamorphic unit in the inner part of the Moroccan Rif. The Filali series is composed of micaschists, gneisses, migmatites and granulites wrapped around the ultramafic body of the Beni Bousera. The foliation is broadly coherent all over the massif although differences in lineation and fold axis have been found between the granulites and the micaschists-gneisses. Metamorphic grade increases continuously towards the ultramafic body; however, seven metamorphic zones which account for this increase can be defined: - chlorite zone: muscovite and chlorite underline the S1 schistosity refolded by S2. Small garnet is wrapped by or cut across S2; - chloritoid zone: chloritoid displays the same textures as chlorite and muscovite, underlining S1 and S2 schistosity. Chlorite reacts out to biotite; - staurolite+andalusite zone: staurolite, andalusite, cordierite and garnet have pre-, syn- and post- kinematic features with respect to S2. Garnet reacts out to muscovite, biotite and plagioclase; - staurolite+andalusite+kyanite zone: same textural relationships as in the previous zone. Kyanite is an additional phase, often displaying epitaxial textures with staurolite and andalusite; - andalusite+kyanite+sillimanite zone: fibrolitic sillimanite generally associated with biotite crystallizes from staurolite. However, sillimanite is also directly formed from andalusite and kyanite. As in the previous zone garnet reacts out to biotite, muscovite and plagioclase; - sillimanite+k-feldspar zone: muscovite reacts out to k-feldspar. Modes of biotite and sillimanite increase; - migmatites zone are composed by biotite, sillimanite, garnet, cordierite quartz and feldspars. Garnets do not display the reaction textures seen in the previous zones; - granulites are composed of a primary paragenesis with kyanite+k-feldspar+garnet+ or -biotite+plagioclase+rutile, partially obliterated by a secondary paragenesis with cordierite, sillimanite and spinel.

This investigation addresses the internal experience as a spatial phenomenon. Ascertaining the difference between internal and external experience as a space metaphor leads to the question of the source of the space metaphors in principle. The analogy between time and space and the space metaphors in Husserl’s conception of time are considered. The question of the temporality of consciousness, evidence, and internal experience are brought to the fore by comparing Brentano’s and Husserl’s conceptions. The difference between the direct and indirect modes of consciousness by Brentano, his conception of time as the boundary in the continuum, and his concept of the proteraesthesis proves to be relevant for the concept of internal experience as a spatial phenomenon. The essay calls in question the self-sufficiency of time-experience and the traditional correspondence of time to the internal experience and of space to the external one. The relation of the Here/There- and Now/Then-experience is discussed. I intend to elucidate the experience of boundary as a primary internal experience from which the space-experience arises. In its turn the boundary-consciousness has its origin in the differentiation-experience. In the latter there is no time, the internal one included, but there is a boundary-experience as a primary and indirect experience. Time is s shadow of space; it originates from the manifold of human spaces.Esta investigación aborda la experiencia interna como un fenómeno espacial. Determinar la diferencia entre la experiencia interna y externa como una metáfora del espacio conduce a la cuestión de la fuente de las, en principio, metáforas espaciales. Aquí se atiende la analogía entre el tiempo y el espacio y las metáforas espaciales en la concepción del tiempo de Husserl. Se ponen de relieve la cuestión de la temporalidad de la conciencia, la evidencia y la experiencia interna, comparando las concepciones de Brentano y Husserl. La diferencia entre los modos de conciencia directos e indirectos de Brentano, su concepción del tiempo como el límite en el continuo, y su concepto de la proteroestesis, son relevantes para el concepto de experiencia interna como un fenómeno espacial. El ensayo cuestiona la autosuficiencia de la experiencia del tiempo y la correspondencia tradicional del tiempo con la experiencia interna y del espacio con la externa. Se discute la relación de la experiencia Aquí/Ahí y de la experiencia Ahora/Luego. Mi in-tención es esclarecer la experiencia de la frontera como una experiencia interna primaria de la cual surge la experiencia espacial. A su vez, la con-ciencia de frontera tiene su origen en la experiencia de diferenciación. En esta último no hay tiempo —incluso el interno—, pero hay una experiencia límite como experiencia primaria e indi-recta. El tiempo es la sombra del espacio; se origina en la multiplicidad de espacios humanos..

Abstract:
The important dare in the solar photovoltaic (PV) system is to investigate the performance under partial shading conditions. A robust intelligent algorithm (RIA) connected with internet of things (IoT) is developed to offer the real-time monitoring of solar PV systems, thus ensuring global maximum power point tracking (MPPT). The RIA comprises a limited-time terminal sliding-mode control (LTTSMC) and a quantum particle swarm optimization- (QPSO-) radial basis function (RBF) neural network. The LTTSMC creates a quick limited-system-state convergence time and allows for singularity avoidance. However, if the system ambiguity is overrated or underrated, the tremble phenomenon or steady-state error probably occurs around the LTTSMC. The QPSO-RBF neural network is integrated into LTTSMC to handle plant parameter variations and external load perturbations, thus reducing tremble and steady-state errors. With the aggregation of the RIA and the IoT, the remote monitoring in the solar PV system yields faster convergence to nonsingular points, and it also introduces neural network method to achieve more accurate ambiguity estimation. Experimental results show the mathematical analysis and performance enhancement of a prototype algorithm-controlled solar PV system based on digital signal processing under transient and steady-state loading conditions. Because the proposed solar PV system has notable advantages over the classical terminal-sliding solar PV system in terms of tracking accuracy and robust adaptation, this paper is worthy of reference to designers of relative robust control and neural network learning algorithm.

El artículo analiza ciertos temas centrales de la filosofía del lenguaje de Anton Marty: primero, su teoría genética del origen casual del lenguaje; segundo, su descripción de los componentes mereológicos y semánticos del lenguaje, en particular del concepto de forma inter-na; tercero, su crítica del juicio categórico, basada en sus análisis de las oraciones impersonales y existenciales; cuarto, la importancia del concepto de existencia para aclarar problemas ontológicos. El trabajo hace además hincapié en señalar las conexiones entre su pensamiento y el de Edmund Husserl, ambos discípulos de Franz Brentano.The article addresses some essential issues of Anton Marty’s philosophy of language: first, its genetic theory of the random origin of language; second, his description of the mereological and the semantic components of language, focused on the concept of internal form; third, its criticism of the categorical judgment, based on its analyses of impersonal and existential sentences; fourth, the importance of the concept of existence in order shed light upon ontological problems. The paper also focuses on emphasizing the connections between his thought and that of Edmund Husserl, both disciples of Franz Brentano.

En este ensayo se considera a Baja California como un producto territorial del fenómeno migratorio, y se realiza una descripción general de la dinámica poblacional que ha experimentado el estado a partir de los constantes movimientos migratorios en destacadas áreas de su espacio geográfico. Demostrando así la existencia en Baja California de movilidades geográficas de población constituidas principalmente por tres tipos de movimientos: el interno, el interurbano, y el internacional; además de encontrar la presencia de cadenas de migración interna basadas en sistemas de reciprocidad social. Finalmente, se proporcionan las conclusiones del trabajo.

Longtemps considérés comme des dépôts de plate forme externe, les calcaires à silex de la dorsale calcaire externe (composée entre Oued Laou au Nord et Assifane au Sud, de trois nappes : nappe du J. Lakraa, du J. Tazoute et du J. Tissouka) sont interprétés aujourd'hui comme des dépôts de pente et de bas de pente résultant de courants gravitaires. Ils sont le résultat d'une sédimentation profonde au pied d'une marge passive en formation créée lors du rifting liasique tethysien. L'analyse sédimentologique de treize coupes levées sur le terrain montre la présence de cinq types de lithofaciès : mégabrêches, coulées et épandages brêchiques, turbidités grossières, calciturbidités et hémipélagites. Suivant le type de dépôts et l'énergie des courants, certains lithofaciès s'agencent en associations de faciès caractérisant certains milieux de dépôt : associations de pente, de bas de pente, de transition pente-bassin, de bassin etc. . . Cette étude sédimentologique réalisée sur les trois nappes de la dorsale externe met en évidence deux grands épisodes tectono-sédimentaires. Après installation d'une plate forme carbonatée au Trias, le rifting de la marge initié à l'Hettangien se manifeste au cours du Sinemurien par une distension découpant la plate forme antérieure en blocs basculés avec installation d'une sédimentation grossière à mégabrêches et debris-flows longeant des accidents N150 (parallèles à la paléo transformante Açores-Gibraltar) à N40 (parallèles à la dorsale de l'Océan liguro-piémontais). Du Pliensbachien au Dogger P. P. Par la poursuite de la distension individualisant un système découpé en Horsts et Grabens qui deviennent le siège d'une sédimentation profonde matérialisée par des turbidités calcaires et des dépôts hémipélagiques.

Abstract:
Dans la region du moyen ouerrha, l'etude des blocs calcaires du jurassique superieur qui emergent en position tectonique complexe, de part et d'autre du village de moulay bouchta, a permis d'etablir une stratigraphie detaillee et de subdiviser la serie du malm-berriasien en deux formations: a la base, les calcaires de msila; au sommet, une serie plus marneuse que nous nommons marno-calcaires d'el bouied. Les variations de facies tant verticales qu'horizontales, que presentent ces formations, nous ont conduit a definir 7 membres et a faire un decoupage spatial du secteur en deux zones de facies: la zone de moulay bouchta est et la zone de moulay bouchta ouest. L'analyse a la fois bio- et lithostratigraphique des blocs prerifains montre que les variations laterales de facies sont en relation avec la paleogeographie du bassin et que ces blocs refletent la polarite de celui-ci. L'etablissement des cartes de facies a permis de reconnaitre cinq coupures lithologiques majeures de large extension (eustatisme). Elles sont en grande partie liees a des fluctuations du niveau marin, mais sont parfois associees a des phases tectoniques. L'etude paleontologique des principaux genres d'ammonites a ete realisee. La faune n'est abondante que dans le kimmeridgien inferieur et dans le tithonien (zones a fallauxi et a microcanthum). Les associations fauniques des principales zones reconnues sont donnees pour la premiere fois pour l'ensemble du prerif interne. Au kimmeridgien inferieur on note l'abondance des ataxioceratidae (ardescia, schneidia), qui etaient jusqu'ici essentiellement connus dans la province submediterraneenne; il semble que la differenciation des faunes d'ammonites mediterraneennes et submediterraneennes soit en grande partie liee a la profondeur du milieu. Au tithonien, la faune d'ammonite appartient typiquement a la province mediterraneenne

Dans la zone prerifaine interne des regions de msila et de mouylay bou chta, l'etude de nombreuses coupes a permis d'etablir une stratigraphie detaillee des calcaires du jurassique superieur. Les importantes variations de facies tant verticales qu'horizontales ont conduit a definir 7 membres au sein de la formation des calcaires de msila. Les faunes d'ammonites et de tintinoidiens (chitinoidella et calpionelles) fournissent des datations nombreuses qui permettent des correlations precises. La barre des calcaires de msila est isochrone, le passage aux marnes sus-jacentes heterochrone. Les nombreux niveaux de slumps, de breches, d'ammonitoco-rosso et les variations brutales de facies dans le sens vertical sont le reflet de phases tectono-sedimentaires. Dans cette region, la polarite du bassin a ete conservee

Abstract:
La chaîne Bético-Rifaine, située dans la partie occidentale de la Méditerranée, est le résultat de la convergence des plaques européenne et africaine et des processus de subduction qui en résultent. Il s’agit donc d’un lieu d’exception pour étudier les processus liés à la dynamique de la subduction. Cette thèse se focalise sur l’étude du domaine interne de la chaine du Rif. Deux zones d’étude ont été sélectionnées (Ceuta et Cabo Negro) où affleurent des roches crustales de haute pression-basse température (HP-BT) (seulement à Ceuta) mais aussi des roches de basse pression-haute température (BP-HT) ainsi que des roches ultrabasiques dont la signification tectonique, le mode et les âges de mise en place restent encore très débattus. Une approche multi-pluridisciplinaire a été effectuée pour réaliser ce travail, avec une étude structurale et pétrographique détaillée, ainsi que des datations U/Th/Pb sur zircon, monazite et xénotime et 40Ar/39Ar sur mica blanc. Les résultats obtenus démontrent que : (i) à environ 29 Ma un métamorphisme de moyenne pression-haute température (MP-HT) affecte les unités des Sebtides inférieures et Ghomarides. Cette phase est contemporaine d’un épaississement de la croûte et de la mise en place de sills de diorite ayant une signature géochimique d’arc magmatique calco-alcalin fortement potassique. Cette phase est d'autre part contemporaine du métamorphisme de HP-BT observé dans les unités crustales des Sebtides supérieures, (ii) à environ 21 Ma une phase d’extension contribue à l’exhumation finale de ces roches. Cet évènement est associé à un épisode métamorphique qui se développe à la limite des conditions des facies amphibolites et schistes verts, sous des conditions de 400-550°C et 1-3 kbar. La combinaison quasi-contemporaine d’unités métamorphiques de gradients thermiques radicalement différents est caractéristique des « ceintures métamorphiques appariées ». Dans ce cas nous proposons le modèle suivant : à 29 Ma, pendant la subduction Alpine, les unités des Ghomarides et Sebtides inférieures se situent au niveau de la plaque supérieure du système de subduction où se développe le métamorphisme de MP-HT. En parallèle le métamorphisme de HP-BT se manifeste dans le panneau plongeant constitué par les Sebtides supérieures. La déshydratation de la plaque plongeante induit un magmatisme calco-alcalin dans la plaque supérieure. A 21 Ma, le recul de la plaque plongeante produit une phase d’extension créant l’ouverture du bassin d’Alboran et l’exhumation des unités de HP-BT<br>The Betic-Rif Cordillera, located in the western part of the Mediterranean, results from the convergence of the European and African plates and related subduction processes. It is therefore an exceptional site to study the processes induced by subduction dynamics. This thesis focuses on the study of the internal domain of the Rif chain. Two key areas have been selected (Ceuta and Cabo Negro) where high pressure-low temperature crustal rocks (HP-LT) (present only in Ceuta) but also low pressure-high temperature rocks (LP-HT) and ultrabasic rocks outcrop. Their tectonic significance, placement mode and ages are still heavily debated subjects. A multidisciplinary approach was developed to carry out this work, with a detailed structural and petrographic study, as well as U/Th/Pb dating on zircon, monazite and xenotime and 40Ar/39Ar on white mica. The results obtained show that: (i) at circa 29 Ma a medium pressure-high temperature metamorphism (MP-HT) affects the lower Sebtides and Ghomarides. This phase is simultaneous with a thickening of the crust and the placement of diorite sill having a geochemical signature of calc-alkaline to high-K magmatic arc. This phase is contemporaneous to the HP-LT metamorphism observed in the crustal units of the upper Sebtides (ii) at circa 21 Ma an extension phase contributes to the final exhumation of these rocks. This event is associated with a metamorphic episode developed at the boundary between Amphibolite and Greenschist facies conditions, at 400-550°C and 1-3 kbar. The quasi-contemporary emplacement of metamorphic units with radically different thermal gradients is characteristic of “paired metamorphic belts”. In this case we propose the following model: at 29 Ma, during Alpine subduction, the units of the Ghomarides and Lower Sebtides are located within the upper plate of the subduction system where the MP-HT metamorphism develops. In parallel, the HP-LT metamorphism occurs within the lower plate constituted by the upper Sebtides. Dehydration of the lower plate induces calc-alkaline magmatism in the upper plate. At 21 Ma, the slab rollback produces an extension phase creating the opening of the Alboran basin and the exhumation of the HP-LT units

Abstract:
Située à l'extrême-ouest de la Méditerranée occidentale, la chaîne bético-rifaine s’est formée au travers d’une histoire orogénique alpine complexe, impliquant des processus de subduction liés à la convergence entre l’Afrique et l’Eurasie depuis le Crétacé. Une découverte importante de ces quatre dernières décennies d'investigations géologiques, a été la mise en évidence des vestiges d’un événement varisque dans les zones internes de la chaîne. Ces résultats soulignent bien la présence de deux systèmes orogéniques superposés, les zones internes de la chaîne bético-rifaine demeurent donc des zones privilégiées pour étudier l’importance de l’héritage structural et métamorphique dans les réactivations partielles ou totale par les évènements les plus récents. Ce travail est localisé dans le secteur de Beni Bousera, ou affleurent les roches crustales et mantéliques qui forment les unités les plus internes de la chaîne. Il s’appuie sur une étude menée à partir des analyses structurales et pétrologiques, des datations U-Th-Pb sur monazite et 40Ar-39Ar sur des micas et des amphiboles. Il nous permet de résumer l’histoire de la chaîne bético-rifaine de la manière suivante : 1) un événement de HP-HT affecte la base du domaine interne à ca 281 ± 3 Ma. Ces nouvelles données pétrologiques et géochronologiques obtenues dans le Rif interne sont corrélées avec les Bétiques, les Kabylies et le massif de l'Edough en Algérie, la ceinture mauritanienne et les Appalaches. Elles attestent d'un domaine convergent au cours du Carbonifère supérieur- Permien inférieur. Tous ces segments orogéniques font partie des Variscides nord-africains construits à la marge nord-ouest du Gondwana en réponse à une convergence entre cette dernière et la Laurentia. 2) autour de 29-26 Ma, un événement métamorphique avec un gradient de type Barrovien à Abukuma affecte les Sebtides (les unités les plus internes de la chaîne), et il est interprété comme résultant de l'évolution de la plaque supérieure d'une zone de subduction. Cet évènement alpin est caractérisé par un chemin prograde marqué par un réchauffement à la base des Sebtides entre 26 et 22 Ma. De telles conditions reflètent un amincissement et un réchauffement de la croûte liée à la remontée asthénosphérique due au retrait de la plaque plongeante ; cet événement marque le début d’un évènement extensif majeur. 3) Au Miocène inférieur à 22-20 Ma, les zones internes (ou domaine d’Alboran) sont affectées par une extension E-W contemporaine de l’ouverture du bassin d'Alboran dans un contexte arrière-arc, et par l’intrusion de filons granitiques dans les péridotites et les unités métamorphiques crustales du domaine interne. Cet évènement a permis l’exhumation finale des Sebtides. 4) Du Miocène inférieur au Miocène moyen, la chaîne bético-rifaine a acquis sa géométrie arquée (l’arc de Gibraltar) suite à la collision entre les zones internes et les zones externes, attestée par une phase de raccourcissement majeur de direction NE-SW à E-W, et 5) l’arc de Gibraltar est affecté par une phase de raccourcissement N-S ante-Pliocène de direction N-S, qui a modifié considérablement sa géométrie<br>Located at the extreme tip of the western Mediterranean, the Betic-Rif orogenic system is built through a complex alpine orogenic history involving processes of subduction related to convergence between Africa and Eurasia since the Cretaceous. A remarkable discovery during the last four decades of geological investigations, has been the remains of a variscan event in the internal zones of the belt. These results underline the presence of two superimposed orogenic systems, the internal zones of the belt thus remain a privileged area to study the importance of the structural and the metamorphic heritage in the partial or total reactivation by the most recent events. This work is located in the Beni Bousera sector, where crustal and mantle rocks that form the innermost units of the chain are exposed. Based on structural and petrological analyses, U-Th-Pb dating on monazite and 40Ar-39Ar dating on micas and amphiboles. The history of the Betic-Rif belt can be summarized as it follows: 1) a HP-HT event affects the base of the internal domain at around 281 ± 3 Ma. These new petrological and geochronological data obtained in the internal Rif, are correlated with the Betics, the Kabyle, the Edough massif of Algeria, the Mauritanian, and the Appalachian belts, attesting a convergent domain during the late Carboniferous – early Permian. All of these orogenic segments are part of the North African Variscides built at the north-western margin of Gondwana in response to convergence between the later and Laurentia. 2) at around 29-26 Ma, a Barrovian to Abukuma metamorphic event affects the Sebtides (the innermost units of the chain) and interpreted as the evolution of the upper plate of a subduction zone. This alpine event is typically characterized by a prograde metamorphic path marked by heating affecting the base of the Sebtides between 26 to 22 Ma, such conditions reflect thinning and heating of the crust related to the asthenosphere upwelling due to slab roll-back. This event marks the beginning of a major extensive event. 3) In the Miocene around 22-20 Ma, the internal zones are affected by an E-W extension contemporary to the opening of the Alboran Basin in a back-arc context, and the intrusion of granitic dykes into the peridotites and crustal metamorphic units, the exhumation of the Sebtides was complete at this time. 4) From early to middle Miocène, the Betic-Rif belt acquired its arcuate geometry (the Gibraltar Arc) during the collision between the Internal and the external zones, attested by de NE-SW to E-W shortening phases across the arc. 5) more lately prior to Pliocene, the Gibraltar arc was subjected to contractional possess related to a N-S shortening phase, which drastically altered its geometry

Abstract:
Les peridotites sont essentiellement des lherzolites a spinelle, equilibrees aux alentours de 10 kbars et 990c. Cependnat, au toit du massif ultrabasique, on rencontre des peridotites a grenats dont les conditions de cristallisation fournies par l'etude theromo-barometrique sont de 880 a 980c et 10 a 15 kb. Ces conditions physiques sont voisines de celles deduites des parageneses metamorphiques presentes dans les granulites (kinzigites) sus-jacentes. Les peridotites et les kinzigites ont subi une evolution commune pour se mettre en place dans une croute continentale moyenne (gneiss et micaschiste du filali). Les peridotites presentent un gradient de deformation croissant depuis la base jusqu'a leur sommet (contact avec les kinzigites). Seules les empreintes structurales des phases alpines ont ete conservees : un aplatissement avec cisaillement vers le se (referentiel actuel) se limitant au coeur du massif, suivi d'un cisaillement oppose vers le nw, retrouve au toit du massif et dans toutes la pile cristallophyllienne sus-jacente. Ces cisaillements opposes correspondraient aux mouvements reciproques des plaques afrique-europe au mesozoique et au tertiaire, distension suivie d'une collision.

Considerando la dinámica de las políticas emergentes, que apuntan a un renovado interés en profundizar la iniciativa después del período de turbulencia 1999-2002, el propósito de este encuentro fue discutir las acciones en distintas áreas tendientes a profundizar el proceso de integración. Los documentos y la conferencia fueron patrocinados por el Departamento de Integración y Programas Regionales del Banco Interamericano de Desarrollo, a través de la Iniciativa Especial de Comercio e Integración. El Departamento desea expresar su agradecimiento por la colaboración de la Fundación y particularmente al Profesor Renato Flores. El reciente deterioro de la credibilidad interna y externa del MERCOSUR es resultante de los caminos elegidos por los socios para enfrentar las coyunturas internas e internacionales considerablemente desfavorables que marcaron los últimos años. El exceso de flexibilidad para acomodar diferencias, la falta de empeño ante la agenda de profundización del bloque y la ausencia de una visión común sobre el papel del proyecto de integración para las estrategias de desarrollo de los cuatro países miembros han venido distorsionando el proyecto original. En la raíz de esta evolución están las divergencias en las políticas macroeconómicas de los socios mayores y la falta de instrumentos para lidiar con las diferencias de tamaño de las economías y para integrar las estructuras productivas asimétricas de los cuatro países. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo realizar una evaluación de la problemática de la agenda comercial del MERCOSUR, analizando sus progresos y dificultades, procurando identificar las raíces de los problemas del proceso de integración y estudiando los principales dilemas actuales. This case study is one of ten international studies developed by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), in association with the Korean Research Institute for Human Settlements (KRIHS), for the cities of Anyang, Medellin, Namyangju, Orlando, Pangyo, Rio de Janeiro, Santander, Singapore, Songdo, and Tel Aviv. At the IDB, the Competitiveness and Innovation Division (CTI), the Fiscal and Municipal Management Division (FMM), and the Emerging and Sustainable Cities Initiative (ESCI) coordinated the study. This project was part of technical cooperation ME-T1254, financed by the Knowledge Partnership Korean Fund for Technology and Innovation of the Republic of Korea. At KRIHS, the National Infrastructure Research Division coordinated the project and the Global Development Partnership Center provided the funding. The case study includes the experience of the city of Rio de Janeiro in smart city initiatives, focusing mainly on Rio Operations Center Project-COR. The methodology was based on field research, site visits, publications, and interviews held with representatives of local government of the City of Rio de Janeiro. The report addresses the city backdrop, the main urban challenges, the history of digital initiatives, and their evolution over time. For the Rio Operations Center, the general model of participation, organizational aspects, the keys functions, the monitored events, the mechanisms for access, dissemination of information, and the decision-making process are described, as well as the typologies of existing systems and their integration with COR. The study concludes that it is a successful model with a high degree of maturity, and that sharing the experience of Rio de Janeiro with other cities is very important. However, the model needs to continue evolving and rely on strong institutional support so that Rio de Janeiro's population can increasingly enjoy the benefits of technological innovations applied to the city's daily challenges.

Feed inputs represent the largest variable cost of producing meat and milk from ruminant animals. Thus, strategies that improve the efficiency of feed utilization are needed to improve the global competitiveness of Israeli and U.S. cattle industries, and mitigate their environmental impact through reductions in nutrient excretions and greenhouse gas emissions. Implementation of innovative technologies that will enhance genetic merit for feed efficiency is arguably one of the most cost-effective strategies to meet future demands for animal-protein foods in an environmentally sustainable manner. While considerable genetic variation in feed efficiency exist within cattle populations, the expense of measuring individual-animal feed intake has precluded implementation of selection programs that target this trait. Residual feed intake (RFI) is a trait that quantifies between-animal variation in feed intake beyond that expected to meet energy requirements for maintenance and production, with efficient animals being those that eat less than expected for a given size and level of production. There remains a critical need to understand the biological drivers for genetic variation in RFI to facilitate development of effective selection programs in the future. Therefore, the aim of this project was to determine the biological basis for phenotypic variation in RFI of growing and lactating cattle, and discover metabolic biomarkers of RFI for early and more cost-effective selection of cattle for feed efficiency. Objectives were to: (1) Characterize the phenotypic relationships between RFI and production traits (growth or lactation), (2) Quantify inter-animal variation in residual HP, (3) Determine if divergent RFIphenotypes differ in HP, residual HP, recovered energy and digestibility, and (4) Determine if divergent RFI phenotypes differ in physical activity, feeding behavior traits, serum hormones and metabolites and hepatic mitochondrial traits. The major research findings from this project to date include: In lactating dairy cattle, substantial phenotypic variation in RFI was demonstrated as cows classified as having low RMEI consumed 17% less MEI than high-RMEI cows despite having similar body size and lactation productivity. Further, between-animal variation in RMEI was found to moderately associated with differences in RHP demonstrating that maintenance energy requirements contribute to observed differences in RFI. Quantifying energetic efficiency of dairy cows using RHP revealed that substantial changes occur as week of lactation advances—thus it will be critical to measure RMEI at a standardized stage of lactation. Finally, to determine RMEI in lactating dairy cows, individual DMI and production data should be collected for a minimum of 6 wk. We demonstrated that a favorably association exists between RFI in growing heifers and efficiency of forage utilization in pregnant cows. Therefore, results indicate that female progeny from parents selected for low RFI during postweaning development will also be efficient as mature females, which has positive implications for both dairy and beef cattle industries. Results from the beef cattle studies further extend our knowledge regarding the biological drivers of phenotypic variation in RFI of growing animals, and demonstrate that significant differences in feeding behavioral patterns, digestibility and heart rate exist between animals with divergent RFI. Feeding behavior traits may be an effective biomarker trait for RFI in beef and dairy cattle. There are differences in mitochondrial acceptor control and respiratory control ratios between calves with divergent RFI suggesting that variation in mitochondrial metabolism may be visible at the genome level. Multiple genes associated with mitochondrial energy processes are altered by RFI phenotype and some of these genes are associated with mitochondrial energy expenditure and major cellular pathways involved in regulation of immune responses and energy metabolism.
