I began writing this essay in what used to be a child’s bedroom. Perched at the small desk by the doll’s house, I looked away to my right and saw how the enormous sash window smoothly held my reflection among the lights and the trees outside. This uncanny framing, this return to the fascination of reflection among the tactile technologies of childhood imagination feels like a fitting place to begin thinking about one of the first poems Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick ever published: ‘An Essay on the Picture P l a n e ’.According to Fat Art, Thin Art, Sedgwick composed the poem in 1973 but the tiny discrepancies — a missing line here, an extra comma there — between the publication of the poem in The Poetry Miscellany in 1975 and the collection of the poem in 1994 hint that the latter text is the product of a slight return to a younger muse, a muse still theorizing the world around her. My own return to ‘An Essay on the Picture Plane’ oscillates between a question and an instruction that Sedgwick’s poem scratched up from my own childhood. The question: “What are you look-ing at?” The instruction: “Look with your eyes, not with your hands”. I learnt both at school. And both, like ‘An Essay on the Picture Plane’, left me tongue-tied.

The massive displacement of Nubians due to the construction of the High Dam in Aswan led to significant geopolitical consequences and shaped new ideological views. Those views, such as the “right to return,” had their impact on Nubian literature as well. But there is more to diaspora than isolation, despair, and political demands. Egyptian Nubians form part of the Egyptian anthropological texture and surely enhance its widely known diversity through the course of history. So it is time to regard Nubia, our border with Africa, as this “place in between,” as an interlude or even as a bridge that sustains two cultures at a time; bringing hybrid motifs together. As a contemporary example of this “border literature,” the Egyptian Nubian writer Mohy El-Deen Saleh composes poetry in Arabic and roves from traditional to modern subjects and from collective reminiscences to individual concerns. This chapter shifts the traditional scope that studies Nubian literature exclusively as a cultural product of a forgotten minority, and analyzes in depth the mutable borders of Nubian identity.

AbstractBoycott efforts against Israel as part of the political conflict between Arabs and Jews in the region have a long history. Boycotts were organised at the Fifth Palestine Arab Congress, during the Arab Revolt in Palestine, at the World Islamic Congress, the Bloudan Conference and by the Arab League. The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement was founded in 2005 with the stated goals of achieving an end to the occupation and colonisation of all Arab lands and a right of return for the Palestinian refugees of 1948 and their descendants, as well as mobilising international support for this. While these demands ostensibly relate to human rights, they pursue a further agenda. At first, this agenda is based on a strategic ambiguity that leaves open what is meant by all Arab lands. Those who can rally behind this demand include both supporters who advocate an end to the occupation and settlements in the West Bank, and those in the BDS movement who propagate the dissolution of Israel as a state—including the militant groups who share the BDS founding call and seek a violent end to Israel in favour of a Palestinian state on that territory.

Abstract The policies of the Greek state vis-à-vis Greek citizens residing abroad are better developed in some areas (pension, cultural/education policy), but very embryonic in others (social protection, family-related benefits). The institutions representing and aggregating the interests of the Greek diaspora, such as the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad and the World Council of Hellenes abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, reflect earlier periods of Greek migration during the post-war period, but meet less adequately the needs of recent migrants, especially following the post-2010 Greek economic crisis. At the same time, political parties continue to play an active role in the relationship between diaspora and the homeland. The policies of the Greek state, especially when exercised informally or with regard to cultural and educational programs, are also characterized by an emphasis on blood, language and religious ties, and are offshoots of a long-standing history of migration to Western Europe, North America and Australia. Possible developments, such as the long-overdue implementation of the right to vote from abroad, an official registrar for Greek citizens residing abroad, new programs of social protection in Greece and new economic incentives for return might change the diaspora policies of the Greek state in the next decades.

AbstractThe top-down solver (TD) is a local fixpoint algorithm for arbitrary equation systems. It considers the right-hand sides as black boxes and detects dependencies between unknowns on the fly—features that significantly increase both its usability and practical efficiency. At the same time, the recursive evaluation strategy of the TD, combined with the non-local destabilization mechanism, obfuscates the correctness of the computed solution. To strengthen the confidence in tools relying on the TD as their fixpoint engine, we provide a first machine-checked proof of the partial correctness of the TD. Our proof builds on the observation that the TD can be obtained from a considerably simpler recursive fixpoint algorithm, the plain TD, by applying an optimization that neither affects the termination behavior nor the computed result. Accordingly, we break down the proof into a partial correctness proof of the plain TD, which is only then extended to include the optimization. The backbone of our proof is a mutual induction following the solver’s computation trace. We establish sufficient invariants about the solver state to conclude the correctness of its optimization, i.e., the plain TD terminates if and only if the TD terminates, and they return the identical result. The proof is written using Isabelle/HOL and is available in the archive of formal proofs.

AbstractAfter the long period of forced work from home, many knowledge workers have not only developed a strong habit of remote work, but also consider flexibility as their personal right and no longer as a privilege. Existing research suggest that the majority prefers to work two or three days per week from home and are likely to quit or search for a new job if forced to return to full time office work. Given these changes, companies are challenged to alter their work policies and satisfy the employee demands to retain talents. The subsequent decrease in office presence, also calls for transformations in the offices, as the free space opens up opportunities for cutting the rental costs, as well as the other expenses related to office maintenance, amenities, and perks. In this paper, we report our findings from comparing work policies in three Nordic tech and fintech companies and identify the discrepancies in the way the corporate intentions are communicated to the employees. We discuss the need for a more systematic approach to setting the goals behind a revised work policy and aligning the intensions with the company’s actions. Further, we discuss the need to resolve the inherent conflicts of interest between the individual employees (flexibility, individual productivity, and well-being) and the companies (profitability, quality of products and services, employee retention, attractiveness in the job market).

With a significant decline in the resource base and new regulations of the fisheries in recent decades, only fishers with advanced skills and fine-grained place-specific and calendric knowledge of the marine environment are able to catch enough fish, and the right kind of fish, to secure a decent return. Drawing on insights from cultural ecology, the chapter examines the skills and knowledges that fishers draw on to catch fish in this challenging environment. It gives particular attention to the temporal dimensions of the biocultural knowledge complex, showing how fishers’ knowledge of the links between sea currents, the lunar cycle and monsoon winds play into their decisions about where, when and how to fish. In addition to its direct livelihood significance, calendric knowledge also serves as a resource in the formation of identity as mananagat (fisherman) and authority and status within the fishing community. To further explain why some fishers are able to use their knowledge to make fishing a viable and legitimate livelihood and others are not, the last part of the chapter uses insights from political ecology to address issues of power and dynamics of exclusion in the fisheries.

Abstract Grounded in basic knowledge about human nature and universal needs, the humanistic theory of wellbeing (HTW) proposes that a life is good to the extent that it allows us to perform our humanness well. A well-performed humanness is further defined as the fulfillment of three universal human needs: the need for stability, the need for change, and the need to and for care. Stability is essential for survival, and all biological structures—from DNA molecules to entire bodies and even social groups—need to preserve a high level of orderliness. Homeostasis is a core stability mechanism, but other exists, such as assimilation in the Piagetian tradition or emotional security in Bowlby’s attachment theory. Achieving a goal is also a stability process. The need for stability interacts dynamically with the need for change. Replacing a cell structure, transforming an egg to a chicken, cognitive growth, and improved cultural knowledge are examples of changes that ensure survival. Accommodation in the Piagetian sense and exploration in Bowlby’s theory are also change processes, and the interplay between the safety of a “secure base” and the exploration of new territories is an example of the dynamics between stability needs and change needs. The facilitation of change can be stimulated by reflective judgments originating in wisdom, moral concerns, and a readiness to develop one’s human potentials. Humans are cooperative and dependent. They therefore need to care about each other. Evolutionary, care needs originated with what Churchland calls the “snuggle for survival,” particularly with the intensified orientation toward one’s offspring. This caring orientation was later amplified by selection pressure on sociability. With the birth of human culture, care for others became foundational for the sophisticated social skills that make our humanness possible and unique. For example, when people collaborate toward a joint goal, the wellbeing of all becomes a common concern, and the need to care for each other becomes vital. The relationships between the three universal needs and the wellbeing concepts adopted by the HTW are organized as a hierarchical taxonomy. Concepts identified with stability are referred to as hedonic wellbeing (HWB). Concepts identified with change are referred to as eudaimonic wellbeing (EWB). Care needs intervene on both HWB and EWB. HWB means to be well in the sense of spontaneously like one’s life. HWB comprises two subdimensions: harmony feelings and spontaneous judgments. Prototypical harmony feelings are tranquility, contentment, happiness, and joy. Social feelings such as empathy and love are also harmony feelings. In terms of valence, high levels of pleasure often co-occur with harmony feelings. Spontaneous judgments comprise the thinking element of HWB. The most important indicator of spontaneous judgments is life satisfaction, but domain satisfaction and the presence of meaning in life are also included in this category. EWB means to be well in the sense of becoming a better human being. EWB comprises three subdimensions: opportunity feelings, reflective judgments, and betterment orientations. Prototypical opportunity feelings are interest, engagement, immersion, and wonder/awe. Social feelings such as compassion and romantic love are included as well. Valence is a less salient feature of opportunity feelings, and the levels of pleasure and displeasure vary. Reflective judgments comprise the thinking element of EWB, with wisdom and morality as the most important indicators. In addition to the feeling dimension and the thinking dimension, EWB is further defined by an improvement indicator, referred to as betterment orientations. Personal growth, the search for meaning in life, and a will to be a good human being are important betterment orientations. The taxonomy of humanistic wellbeing accounts for many concepts and their relationships. To summarize them in a definition, HTW suggests that being well means to like one’s life for the right reasons. A life is liked if it feels good and is thought of as good by the person who lives it. The “right reasons” part of the definition is normative and refers to this idea: To count as indicators of a life that goes well, our likings must not violate a small set of humanistic values, specified as respecting basic human rights, avoiding preventable harm, and accepting an ethics of care. The humanistic values are included as background assumptions in the HTW. The values are justified by a combination of empirical evidence—such as the universal need for care—and feminist epistemology. Thus, a value can be regarded as reasonable if it survives the open criticism from a scientific community of peers. From the perspective of feminist epistemology, science is an interactive and social activity. This suggests that new knowledge produces changes in the world and that an altered world in turn provides revised understandings. A humanistic theory of wellbeing is therefore a product of a certain worldview and will hopefully have the potential to contribute to a revised worldview and a better world in return.
