This thesis is about potentiality theory and the right to life. It is an attempt to distil the potentiality position into its strongest incarnation in order to see what it has to offer. In Chapter I various attempts to discredit potentiality theory are examined. Particular emphasis is placed on Michael Tooley's defense of abortion and infanticide and his critique of potentiality theory. It is concluded that a well articulated potentiality position need not lead to any obvious absurdity, and can resist the charge of philosophical arbitrariness. Women die every year as the result of unsafe abortion methods. Abstract:
This dissertation seeks to rhetorically examine how women who have had abortions construct their abortion experience, with particular attention given to the role of various identity factors (such as race, nationality, class, spirituality, and geographic location) in the construction of their experiences. By giving voice to women's experiences and placing this voice in a historical context of differential racialization, as well as within both Critical Race Feminism (CRF) and Reproductive Justice (RJ) frameworks, this dissertation asks: How does the narrator construct the importance of her ident

Thesis (PhD)--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Problem statement For utilitarians, human beings have intrinsic moral significance based on only two acquired characteristics: sentience, or the ability to suffer, and psychological personhood. Sentience is the entrance-requirement for moral significance, but does not justify a "right to life" claim; at most a "right" not to suffer. Personhood, described as some sort of self-conscious awareness with a concept of the future, may justify a "right to life" claim. However, since personhood is absent in prenatal beings, and

Claims asserting that abortion harms the mental, physical and emotional health of women have recently gained influence among the judicial and legislative branches of government as well as the general public. While there is a growing body of literature on the place of such women-protective arguments in the contemporary abortion debate, comparatively little has been written on the origins of such claims. This paper traces the role of women-protective claims within the anti-abortion movement from the early nineteenth century to the present, using a variety of primary source material, including me

Abstract:
Though hailed as one of the most exemplary laws on abortion, the 1996 Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act of South Africa does not directly address conscientious objection. The consequences of such a gap serve as an obstacle to the efficacy of a liberal abortion law in practice. Where there are no clear laws or guidelines, the environment is conducive for healthcare providers acting within their ‘own’ interpretation of the law. This thesis centres around nurses as the largest single group of health care providers in South Africa. Within this context, it explores the factors that shape h

This thesis seeks to understand the various forces that have shaped the form, content, utilization and emergence of abortion narratives--both within a historical context and for political value. By comparing the themes that emerge within and across three sets of narratives--anti-abortion narratives, pre-Roe narratives that support abortion rights, and post-Roe abortion-rights narratives--and by identifying both gaps and influxes in the use of narratives, this thesis argues that the content and utilization of abortion narratives is directly connected to broader discursive strategies and politic

Abstract:
This thesis examines how four different women's rights organizations in Nicaragua are arguing against the current abortion prohibition (2018). The thesis is based on a qualitative text analysis where an analytical framework has been developed to categorize the different arguments that were found. Moreover, the thesis compares how the relevant organizations are arguing compared with how they argued ten years ago (around 2008). Various ways of arguing against the law were found among the organizations. Some based their arguments on the health-related issues the prohibition leads to. Others focus

Abstract:
Discursive constructions of abortion are embedded in the social and gendered power relations of a particular socio-historical space. As part of research on public discourses concerning abortion in South Africa where there has been a radical liberalisation of abortion legislation, we collected data from male group discussions about a vignette concerning abortion, and newspaper articles written by men about abortion. Our analysis revealed how discourses of equality, support and rights may be used by men to subtly undermine women’s reproductive right to ‘choose’ an abortion. Within an Equal Partn

Objectives: This research investigated Grade 11 learners’ knowledge of the CTOP Act and its stipulations.
