Abstract:
This chapter considers housing as a basic good that satisfies critical basic human needs for shelter. Housing satisfies not only the human need for shelter but also as a place in which the provision of other basic goods can occur. The chapter also considers the widespread but unknown extent of housing deprivation and the consequent negative impacts for well-being, including health. It examines the subsistence right to housing and the role of this right within the United Nations system of human rights. It also examines the issue of refugees and displaced people, urban slums, approaches to housing provision, and regulatory frameworks.

Abstract:
This concluding chapter presents the endings to the stories of the Point Place youth, while highlighting the connections between everyday relatedness and companionship—or nakana—on the streets. Notably, a substantial number of the Point Place youth are still seeking shelter in the city center. Some of them had happy and hopeful endings, while many had perished. However, most of them returned to the streets since they have nowhere else to go. The chapter reviews the housing options for the urban poor, emphasizing the lived disparities between political rhetoric and practice that make the basic right of dignified life, including the right to shelter, an unlikely reality for South Africa's older street youth population.

Abstract:
For generations, historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) have been essential institutions for the African American community. Their nurturing environments not only provided educational advancement but also catalyzed the Black freedom struggle, forever altering the political destiny of the United States. In this book, Jelani M. Favors offers a history of HBCUs from the 1837 founding of Cheyney State University to the present, told through the lens of how they fostered student activism. Favors chronicles the development and significance of HBCUs through stories from institutions such as Cheyney State University, Tougaloo College, Bennett College, Alabama State University, Jackson State University, Southern University, and North Carolina A&T. He demonstrates how HBCUs became a refuge during the oppression of the Jim Crow era and illustrates the central role their campus communities played during the civil rights and Black Power movements. Throughout this definitive history of how HBCUs became a vital seedbed for politicians, community leaders, reformers, and activists, Favors emphasizes what he calls an unwritten "second curriculum" at HBCUs, one that offered students a grounding in idealism, racial consciousness, and cultural nationalism.

Abstract:
This chapter reads Adonais and The Triumph of Life as united by their intense exploration of the purpose, possibilities, and limits of poetry, from elegiac commemoration to visionary rhyme. Though many of Shelley’s poetic works are informed by close attention to these questions, their significance becomes heightened in these late poems. The reading of Adonais sees Shelley’s and Keats’s 1820 letters influence the elegy profoundly, and I read Shelley as fashioning Adonais as a response to their mutual advice. The Triumph of Life grows out of the echo chamber of his response to the literature in which he was steeped as he composed his final poem. Yet rather than the poem being of interest for its status in relation to other works, a letter to John Gisborne of 10 April 1822 reveals the complexity of Shelley’s artistic reaction to his peers which he embeds into the poem. Both poems stand as achievements of serious ambition and poetic consequence.

McSheffrey, Shannon. Seeking Sanctuary. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198798149.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Seeking Sanctuary explores a curious aspect of premodern English law: the right of felons to shelter in a church or ecclesiastical precinct, remaining safe from arrest and trial in the king’s courts. This is the first book in more than a century to examine sanctuary in England in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Looking anew at this subject challenges the prevailing assumptions in the scholarship that this ‘medieval’ practice had become outmoded and little used by the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Although for decades after 1400 sanctuary-seeking was indeed fairly rare, the evidence in the legal records shows the numbers of felons seeking refuge in churches began to climb again in the late fifteenth century and reached its peak in the period between 1525 and 1535. Sanctuary was not so much a medieval dinosaur accidentally surviving into the early modern era, as it was an organism that had continued to evolve and adapt to new environments and indeed flourished in its adapted state. Sanctuary suited the early Tudor regime: it intersected with rapidly developing ideas about jurisdiction and provided a means of mitigating the harsh capital penalties of the English law of felony that was useful not only to felons but also to the crown and the political elite. Sanctuary’s resurgence after 1480 means we need to rethink how sanctuary worked, and to reconsider more broadly the intersections of culture, law, politics, and religion in the century and a half between 1400 and 1550.
