A list of acrodont lizard type specimens extant in the Naturalis collection is presented here for the first time. The collections combines original specimens of the former Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden (RMNH) and the former Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA). Currently the Naturalis collection holds primary types of 25 agamid lizard species (11 holotypes, six lectotypes and syntypes for eight species, including types of two species where the type status is unclear) as well as numerous secondary types for 22 species (14 para- and eight paralectotype series). In the years after its foundation in 1814, the United Kingdom of the Netherlands witnessed the emergence of several new sites where natural history—the study of naming, describing and classifying plants, animals and minerals—was carried out. These new sites, such as the Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie (National Museum for Natural History), founded in 1820, the Rijksherbarium (National Herbarium) and the colonial site Nederlands-Indië (Netherlands Indies) had not existed in that form and in that combination before. Natural history collections contain a wealth of information on species diversity, distribution and ecology. However, due to historical and practical constraints, this valuable information is not always available to researchers. Our project aimed at unlocking data handwritten in notebooks owned by Johanna Bonne-Wepster, a Culicidae researcher. These handwritten notes refer to specimens labeled with a number only. The notebooks were scanned and entered into a Google spreadsheet. The specimens were provided with a unique identifier, labeled with the information from the notebooks and the data exp

Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778–1858) was the first director of the Rijksmuseum Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden, The Netherlands. His large private collection of specimens, composed primarily of birds and mammals, was listed by him in a catalogue published in 1807. However, an unpublished catalogue in Temminck's hand, drafted by him about four years earlier, has been found in the archives of Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden. This paper compares the two catalogues, providing further insights into Temminck's work.

AbstractThe Leiden artist Hieronymus van der Mij is only known today as a portrait painter, e.g. from the twelve portraits in the Lakenhal in Leiden, one in the Rijksmuseum and the series of professors done for Leiden University. He also owed his fame in his own day primarily to his portraits, but as Jan van Gool pointed out in 1750 (Note I), he also had a penchant for painting 'antique and modern cabinet pictures'. The main reason why these have been forgotten is that over the years they have slipped almost unnoticed into the oeuvre of Willem van Mieris, not seldom with false signatures to bo
