Abstract:

A list of acrodont lizard type specimens extant in the Naturalis collection is presented here for the first time. The collections combines original specimens of the former Rijksmuseum van Natuurlijke Historie, Leiden (RMNH) and the former Zoölogisch Museum Amsterdam (ZMA). Currently the Naturalis collection holds primary types of 25 agamid lizard species (11 holotypes, six lectotypes and syntypes for eight species, including types of two species where the type status is unclear) as well as numerous secondary types for 22 species (14 para- and eight paralectotype series). The genus Eutrombicula Ewing (Trombiculidae) currently includes more than 80 species parasitizing amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals worldwide. Coenraad Jacob Temminck (1778–1858) was the first director of the Rijksmuseum Natuurlijke Historie in Leiden, The Netherlands. His large private collection of specimens, composed primarily of birds and mammals, was listed by him in a catalogue published in 1807. However, an unpublished catalogue in Temminck's hand, drafted by him about four years earlier, has been found in the archives of Naturalis Biodiversity Center, Leiden. This paper compares the two catalogues, providing further insights into Temminck's work.
