Abstract:
The aim of the investigation was to determine effects of different calf-rearing conditions with regard to the factor of the presence of the dam on the development of the social behavior during the ontogeny. The results of these investigations should express the animal requirements of the calves to the different keeping systems in view of the social environment. The study was carried out in the time between April 1994 and October 1996, until the age of their own reproduction. Two groups of female calves , containing 11 animals (suckling calves) and 10 animals (watering calves) were observed. The first group was raised by dams (suckling calves). The second one was raised without any contacts to the dams (watering calves). Suckling calves exhibited social contacts preferably to their own mother rather than to the other calves of the group. In most cases the contacts between the calves consisted of play runnings and horning. These calves established the rank order after weaning, i. e. after the ninth month. In the time before weaning the social interactions of the suckling calves exceeded those of the watering calves. Mutual suckling behaviour took place only in the group of the watering calves. Social rank order disputes among calves of the automatically fed group already started in their fourth month. The establishment of ranks was principally determined by age and weight. Mutual suckling behaviour were often observed. It was very often during the time as they were fed by the automatic liquid feeder and it was observed till the 22nd month. The number of social contacts to peers of calves in the age between the 9th and 23rd month was nearly the same. Those mothers that had been raised as suckling calves had more interactions with their own offspring and spent more time with them in comparison to the automatically fed group. The rhythm of behavior of the observation (lightly) day was different between the groups over the full observation period. At the end of the observations in October 1996 the rhythm of behaviour was nearly the same, but not for all specifics. Also, there were differences in the daily sums of feeding, laying and standing. The rearing of calves in groups with their dams fulfills the special social needs of cows and calves. The social potencies of adults improve the rearing of the calves. The young's get the possibility to learn from the adults. This possibility is very important and has a positive influence for rearing of their own offspring. This basic principal is important for the development of rearing methods, for a better biological quality and fulfills the specific requirements of calf-rearing.

Abstract:
Hide contamination represents a main source of microbiological contamination of carcass surface. In order to reduce the potential health risks for the consumer the EU implemented measures in the context of the regulations no. 852/-, 853/- and 854/2004. These imply that only clean cattle are suitable for slaughter in order to eliminate the risk of meat contamination via hide or skin. Food business operators are responsible for ensuring that the requirements are met. One problem is, that the meaning of cleanliness is not defined clearly enough. Therefore some European states implemented regulations for the grading of hide cleanliness. The main objective of the own analysis was to point out the correlation between the level of hide contamination and the total bacteria count of the surfaces of the carcasses. Therefore an ascending hide cleanliness classification system for beef cattle was developed which is based on two vertical hide regions, an area measure as well as aspects of cleanliness and humidity based on three major-classes for hide-cleanliness. In total 180 female bovine cattle were classified by their hide, digitally photographed from four perspectives (two standing and two stunned) as well as slaughtered and examined in a group of equal or very similar level of conta- mination on test days. The sampling technique was based on stalked sponge swabs, which were pulled over four exactly defined locations of the freshly flayed carcass twice (front and back side) through a self-developed oblong template measuring 100 cm2. The four incre- mental samples per animal were pooled and tested for the hygiene indicators aerobic colony count as well as for Enterobacteriaceae count and Escherichia coli count. Analyzing the data set statistically all logarithmized aerobic colony counts were normally distributed. Three ordinal scores for aerobic colony count were defined (Score1:0bis≤2log10 cm-2,Score2:2bis≤ 3log10 cm-2 andScore3:>3log10 cm-2) and tested in conjunction with the three major classes of hide contamination. The general finding was that the amount of animals with low total bacteria count (Score 1) decreased with higher major class. The amount of cattle with moderate Summary 119 bacteria content (Score 2) increased slightly with the major class. The amount of animals with high total bacteria count (Score 3) increased substantially with the major class. It could be shown that major-class-I included a statistically significant lower amount of animals with high total bacteria count compared to major-class-II. The same held for the comparison of major-class-II and -III as well as of major- class-I and -III. E. coli and Enterobacteriaceae could be evidenced only on about a third of the carcasses and thus be analyzed in combination with the major-classes and the three Scores. Applying the reduced population respectively the same correlation could be confirmed approximately. Overall the described correlations can be taken as indication that the considered colony counts rise with an increasing visual level of contamination. In case of development and implementation of a regulation system in Germany the application of a maximum of three ascending classes of hide contamination appears to be justifiable. Furthermore the terms „clean“ and „cleanliness“ should be complemented with attributes as „sufficient(ly)“.

Abstract:
Bivalente Impfstoffe dagegen wären also potentiell wirksam.
Botulism is a disease, which still causes high losses in tropical cattle production systems. In Brazil botulism shows next to rabies and plant poisonings the highest mortalities in adult cattle, whereas in countries like Australia or South Africa botulism has to some extend come under control. Estimated losses in Brazil are in the range of 1 % p.a. of the total cattle population. Since even in remote areas vaccines are available the goal of this investigation was to identify causes for continual high losses. The study is based on three different areas of investigation: -A field survey in order to identify effective management measures to protect cattle against botulism. -A bacteriological analysis to identify the main endemic types of C. botulinum. -A study of the efficacy of commercially available vaccines. Results were as follows: -The field survey showed that preventive herd management is practically only of secondary importance. Cattle owners restrict their activities mainly on the treatment of clinical cases, while outbreaks with high losses of animals are widely tolerated. -The bacteriological analysis showed that the predominant types of C. botulinum are C and D. Therefore bivalent vaccines against these types could be effective. Other existing types, e. g. type A, which was found in one case, would not be covered. -The efficacy of vaccines showed considerable differences regarding production of antibodies and persistence of a high level of protection between the different tested vaccines. As a tool for testing the ELISA proved to be only partly suitable. An additional immunoblot confirmed the ELISAs result, but showed also its shortcomings. Finally it is discussed that losses due to botulism result extensively from deficiencies in herd management. These are especially the absence of a systematic vaccination program against botulism integrated into the regular herd management, furthermore, the use of contaminated feeds like poultry droppings, and an ineffective removal of carcasses and carrion

Abstract:
Abstract The structure and morphology of plasma sprayed splats are experimentally investigated using different droplet materials and substrate materials. Droplet materials include aluminum, copper, nickel and refractory metals such as molybdenum and tungsten, and substrate materials include aluminum, stainless steel, and molybdenum plates. The results show that the splashing occurs during the splatting of a completely molten droplet. Most splats formed by droplets molten completely are only central part of the ideal disk type ones, which are defined as the annulus-ringed disk-like splat. It is found that the morphology of such annulus-ringed disk-like splat is greatly influenced by the combination of droplet and substrate materials depending on whether substrate melting occurs. With the combinations of droplet and substrate materials which are of similar thermal properties the splashing of central area of splat tends to occur to present a honeycomb structure at the center of splat. When droplet impacting can cause melting of substrate annulus-ringed splat prefers to present a split type. The flattening ratio of an annulus-ringed disk splat is typically less than 2.

Abstract:
Os livros resenhados foram: Physical Approach to Engineering Acoustics (Ronald N. Miles), Environmental and Architectural Acoustics (Z. Maekawa, J. H. Rindel e P. Lord), Acoustics: An Introduction to Its Physical Principles and Applications (Allan D. Pierce) e Fundamentals of Spherical Array Processing (Boaz Rafaely).
