Abstract:
Online Survey is important for College Prog, because of the online survey we can find out the result of the perfomance of the lecturers there. And the system is still using the previous Questionnaire System Manual. This System still uses Media Paper to be taken from the RPU by the Officer Questionnaire, and Officers Questionnaires will give questionnaire sheet to the classes and given to students to fill out. It made ineffetive and inefficient way of assesing the perfomance result Lecturer at the College of Prog, because the questionnaire was manually take a long time on how to manufacture, print, deployment, and inputting the result of the questionnaire form. Because whe the Form Questionnaire were completed by Studen Officer will provide the result to the Questionnaire Form and RPU. RPU will enter one by one Form Questionnaire by using Microsoft Exel, it can allow the occurrence of Human Error. Based on the above the shortage of Higher Education Prog manually change the questionnaire lecturer with Rinfo Form. Rinfo Form a useful system to create an online form, form a payment, and also create an online voting form. And that is very important Rinfo Form is already SSO(single sign on) with Google so student are easier to fill out an online questionnaire. Rinfo Form also use Form Emailer so when the students have finished completing the form, then automatically the student will get an email notification because it fills out the form and the Admin will receive an email notification from anyone who have already filled out questionnaires online, the Rinfo Form also spreadsheet are connected with the so admins easier to recapitalize the data that has been entered.

Abstract:

On Perguruan Tinggi Raharja Learning System is still arguably very conservative. Things like this can be seen by way of learning that students re-enact the moment when they make a report, and students still give a report in the form of a printout to the Lecturer. then the Professor do some checking on the report sheet printouts. If there is a mistake in the making of the report then students must fix it and should be repeated and handed printouts back to the lecturer who relate to corrections. Something lik e this is not very effective because of having to issue a paper very much and the resulting printout that repeatedly before and been repaired. The process of mak ing such reports as well as progress in College Raharja. to be able to facilitate students or Professors are able to use RinfoSheets as a means to help the process of creating a report. RinfoSheet is one of the facilities in RinfoDrive and already exists or is provided in the Email Rinfo. Yg facilities provided by gmail is u sed as the identity of the College Raharja with @raharja. account info is called with Rinfo and Gmail provide that is GoogleDrive named Rinfodrive because it applied in College Raharja as credentials that will be identical to the name Rinfo. With the RinfoSheets report creation process in the learning process so easy can be done online or connected to the network and can be used wherever and whenever as long as it is still connected to the network. Using RinfoSheets is expected to be able to facilitate students in the process of creating reports and charts in the report learning In Perguruan Tinggi Raharja.

Abstract:
Indonesia still has problems about the time of shalat. This reason that encourage Hendro Setyanto to create a new tool in the form of a display of prayer times of all time with a new concept, Di9ital Prayer Time. This digital clock has been published and has been traded to the public. Thus, this study will examine the method and accuracy of the Di9ital Prayer Time in determining the time of prayer. Regarding this theme, this research is a type of qualitative research using an empirical juridical approach. The specification of this study is descriptive analysis, this study intends to provide an overview, examine, explain then analyze the level of accuracy of the Di9ital Prayer Time in determining the time of prayer. The results of this study indicate that after comparing the Di9ital Prayer Time with the schedule of time for the circular prayer of the Ministry of Religion, only a maximum difference of three minutes was found. If the Di9ital Prayer Time is compared to the results of the program of prayer time by Rinto Anugraha, only a difference of four minutes was found, but after being traced, the program for the Rinto prayer did not yet use ikhtiyat. If the results of the Rinto prayer time program are supplemented by two minutes of faith, the difference is a maximum of two minutes. As such, Di9ital Prayer Time is very relevant as a guideline for prayer times. While the determination of the time of prayer by the Indonesian Ministry of Religion which has been the guideline of the people throughout Indonesia is still relevant as a guideline for prayer times. This is still within the limits of relevance, given the schedule of prayer times by the Ministry of Religion is very helpful for the community.

Abstract:
Two experiments were completed to determine whether the form and concentration of iron (Fe) affected Fe toxicity in the Fe-efficient species Pelargonium ×hortorum `Ringo Deep Scarlet' L.H. Bail. grown at a horticulturally low substrate pH of 4.1 to 4.9 or Fe deficiency in the Fe-inefficient species Calibrachoa ×hybrida `Trailing White' Cerv. grown at a horticulturally high substrate pH of 6.3 to 6.9. Ferric ethylenediaminedi(o-hydroxyphenylacetic) acid (Fe-EDDHA), ferric ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (Fe-EDTA), and ferrous sulfate heptahydrate (FeSO4·7H2O) were applied at 0.0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, or 4.0 mg ·L–1 Fe in the nutrient solution. Pelargonium showed micronutrient toxicity symptoms with all treatments, including the zero Fe control. Contaminant sources of Fe and Mn were found in the peat/perlite medium, fungicide, and lime, which probably contributed to widespread toxicity in Pelargonium. Calibrachoa receiving 0 mg Fe/L exhibited severe Fe deficiency symptoms. Calibrachoa grown with Fe-EDDHA resulted in vigorous growth and dark green foliage, with no difference from 1 to 4 mg·L–1 Fe. Using Fe-EDTA, 4 mg Fe/L was required for acceptable growth of Calibrachoa, and all plants grown with FeSO4 were stunted and chlorotic. Use of Fe-EDDHA in water-soluble fertilizer may increase the upper acceptable limit for media pH in Fe-inefficient species. However, iron and Mn present as contaminants in peat, irrigation water, or other sources can be highly soluble at low pH. Therefore, it is important to maintain a pH above 6 for Fe-efficient species regardless of applied Fe form or concentration, in order to avoid the potential for micronutrient toxicity.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ungrafted trees of seven apple rootstock cultivars, M.4, M.7, M.11, M.26, M.27, MM.106, and Maru. bakaidou (Malus prunifolia Borkh. var. ringo Asami; weeping type), and `Fuji' (Malus domestics Borkh.) trees grafted on these seven plus M.9 and M. 16 rootstock were grown in sand. They were regularly supplied with nutrient solutions of N as ammonium alone (A), nitrate alone (T), and both (AT). With both ungrafted and grafted trees, the shoot growth of six rootstock (M.11, M.4, M.7, MM.106, M.26, and M.27) was significantly less with A than with T. With `Fuji' trees grafted on the above six rootstock, the number of flowering buds and the ratios of flowering buds to total emerged buds were significantly enhanced by treatments A and AT, especially in the formation of axillary flowering buds. Flowering and shoot growth of `Fuji' trees grafted on M. prunifolia and M.16 were slightly affected by the form of supplied N. In the xylem sap, cytokinin-like activity was detected in a single zone in paper chromatography in all rootstock and `Fuji' trees. The activity in six ungrafted rootstock (M.4, M.7, M.11, M.26, M.27, and MM.106) and `Fuji' trees grafted on these plus M.9 rootstock were higher with A than with T. Gibberellin-like activity in the same sap was detected in two zones, Rfs 0.3 to 0.4 and Rfs 0.7 to 0.8 in paper chromatography. In the six ungrafted rootstock and in `Fuji' trees grafted on these plus M.9, A led to higher activity at Rfs 0.7 to 0.S, but T led to higher activity at Rfs 0.3 to 0.4. Cytokinin-like and gibberellin-like activities in ungrafted M. prunfolia and `Fuji' trees grafted on M. prunifolia or M.16 were not affected by the form of N.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Chlamydomonas cells excise their flagella in response to a variety of experimental conditions (e.g., extremes of temperature or pH, alcohol or detergent treatment, and mechanical shear). Here, we show that flagellar excision is an active process whereby microtubules are severed at select sites within the transition zone. The transition zone is located between the flagellar axoneme and the basal body; it is characterized by a pair of central cylinders that have an H shape when viewed in longitudinal section. Both central cylinders are connected to the A tubule of each microtubule doublet of the transition zone by fibers (approximately 5 nm diam). When viewed in cross section, these fibers are seen to form a distinctive stellate pattern characteristic of the transition zone (Manton, I. 1964. J. R. Microsc. Soc. 82:279-285; Ringo. D. L. 1967. J. Cell Biol. 33:543-571). We demonstrate that at the time of flagellar excision these fibers contract and displace the microtubule doublets of the axoneme inward. We believe that the resulting shear force and torsional load act to sever the axonemal microtubules immediately distal to the central cylinder. Structural alterations of the transition zone during flagellar excision occur both in living cells and detergent-extracted cell models, and are dependent on the presence of calcium (greater than or equal to 10(-6) M). Immunolocalization using monoclonal antibodies against the calcium-binding protein centrin demonstrate the presence of centrin in the fiber-based stellate structure of the transition zone of wild-type cells. Examination of the flagellar autotomy mutant, fa-1, which fails to excise its flagella (Lewin, R., and C. Burrascano. 1983. Experientia. 39:1397-1398), demonstrates that the fa-1 lacks the ability to completely contract the fibers of the stellate structure. We conclude that flagellar excision in Chlamydomonas involves microtubule severing that is mediated by the action of calcium-sensitive contractile fibers of the transition zone. These observations have led us to question whether microtubule severing may be a more general phenomenon than previously suspected and to suggest that microtubule severing may contribute to the dynamic behavior of cytoplasmic microtubules in other cells.

Abstract:
Abstract Background: Membrane-associated tyrosine- and threonine-specific Cdc2-inhibitory kinase (PKMYT1) is a cell cycle regulatory kinase that inhibits CDK1/CyclinB activity, delaying entry into mitosis in tumor cells experiencing replication stress (RS). RS is frequently induced by genetic alterations that drive premature transition from G1 to S phase, promoting genome instability and creating a synthetic lethal (SL) relationship between these specific alterations and PKMYT1 inhibition. This relationship has been demonstrated preclinically and clinically with CCNE1 amplification and FBXW7 mutations, common alterations in ovarian and colorectal cancers, respectively. Oncogenic KRAS gain of function (GOF) mutations, combined with TP53 alterations, are bona fide drivers of RS. Here we investigate the relationship between KRAS/TP53 alterations and PKMYT1 inhibition, mediated by the first-in-class, potent and selective PKMYT1 inhibitor lunresertib (RP-6306), alone or in combination with RS-inducing agents. Methods: KRAS/TP53 double mutant isogenic cell pairs, across relevant tumor origins, were genetically engineered to express multiple KRAS GOF mutant codons and alleles (G12D, G12C, G12V, G12R, G13D and Q61H). Cell cycle distribution perturbations and RS were evaluated. Sensitivity to lunresertib alone or in combination with chemotherapeutic or targeted agents was assessed by cell growth assays. In vitro findings were further evaluated in KRAS/TP53 double mutant patient-derived xenografts (PDX). Results: Lunresertib inhibited the growth of isogenic KRAS/TP53 double mutant cells, with up to a 12-fold EC50 shift compared to control parental cells. Combination of lunresertib with RS-inducing chemotherapeutic agents (eg. gemcitabine), or the ATR inhibitor camonsertib (RP-3500) led to synergistic cell growth inhibition in KRAS/TP53 mutant cells at significantly lower concentrations than in wild type lines. Mechanistically, KRAS/TP53 isogenic cells showed elongated S-phase and increased cyclin B1 levels, phenocopying the effects of CCNE1 amplification. Lunresertib induced premature mitosis and DNA damage in KRAS/TP53 mutant cells, sparing parental cell lines. PDX efficacy studies demonstrated robust combination benefit in pancreatic, lung and colorectal settings, with durable tumor regressions and complete responses observed. Conclusion: GOF KRAS mutations, when combined with TP53 alterations, show a strong SL relationship with PKMYT1 inhibition, alone or in combination with RS-inducing antitumor agents. Importantly, the SL phenotype was observed across multiple tumor indications and KRAS mutant codons/alleles, suggesting a potential broad scope of clinical utility beyond approved KRAS inhibitors. The mechanism is similar to CCNE1 amplification, characterized by enhanced G1/S transition driving heightened dependence on PKMYT1 to inhibit CDK1/CyclinB. Taken together, our data form rationale for the therapeutic evaluation of PKMYT1 inhibitors in KRAS/TP53 altered tumors and uncover a potential new patient selection biomarker for lunresertib. Abstract:
The Pinto Aceh motif is the creativity of local Acehnese motifs that are different from other motifs in Indonesia. The Pinto Aceh motif has its own uniqueness and aesthetic value. This can be seen from its symmetrical like a butterfly shape. Interest in raising the theme of Pinto Aceh motifs is because researchers want to give a new touch, especially in leather crafts combined with Pinto Aceh motifs. So far the Pinto Aceh motif works that have been created are still the same as the first time this motif was created, always in form of a symmetrical butterfly. Because of that the creation of leather craft works is realized in the form of two-dimensional and three- dimensional works by presenting the new forms. The materials used are parchment leather, vegetable tanned leather, mosquito netting wire, wood, glass, mirrors, synthetic leather and iron. The method used in the creation of this work goes through three stages, that is the exploration stage, the design stage and the embodiment stage. The works created do not only contain aesthetic value but also contain the meaning of freedom of creation, which is manifested in the creation of the Pinto Aceh motif. The expression of the Pinto Aceh motif as a source of inspiration for the creation of leather craft can be a medium for art connoisseurs, especially craft art and in hope to give another new forms of craft art, so that in the future it can become a reference for the development of craft art, especially leather craft. Keywords: PintoAceh, motifs, leather, craf.

Abstract:
Abstract Mitochondria assemble in a dynamic tubular network. Their morphology is governed by mitochondrial fusion and fission, which regulate most mitochondrial functions including oxidative phosphorylation. Yet, the link between mitochondrial morphology and respiratgion remains unclear. Here, we uncover a mitochondrial morphology dedicated to respiratory growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which we refer to as “Ringo”. The Ringo morphology is characterized by stable constrictions of mitochondrial tubules. Ringo constrictions are mediated by the yeast dynamin Dnm1 and, unlike mitochondrial fission, occur in the absence of contacts with the endoplasmic reticulum. Our data show that blocking formation of the Ringo morphology correlates with decreased respiration, decreased expression of OXPHOS subunits and perturbed mitochondrial DNA distribution. These results open important perspectives about the link between mitochondrial form and function.

In the era of intense competition in the marketing world, companies are driven to create creative advertising effectively. The right advertising will have a long-term marketing impact, and easily influence and take market position. The problem discussed in this study is how Rinso try to influence consumer purchasing decisions by taking advantage through meaning of denotation, connotation, and myth in taking the position of detergents that can maintain color quality through Rinso Color. This study uses Barthes Semiology theory, with descriptive qualitative research methods. The object of research is color, which can be concluded from this analysis, if color is a form to showed how is the character of a personality. Personality that wants to be formed through color, is another effort that needs to be done through Rinso Color. It can be seen that the preparation of aspects of advertising represents all aspects of both character, tagline, diction, to the target market of Rinso which is part of the total branding terminology in integrated marketing communication. Therefore, this thesis aims to reveal the effectiveness of the online services provided by Pegadaian Syariah Siringo-ringo through the Pegadaian Syariah Digital Service (PSDS) Application Service in increasing the number of customers. The background to the problem in this research is that errors often occur in applications and services that do not comply with procedures. The data collection method uses qualitative methods with observation, interviews and documentation. The research results show that this application is largely operating according to its intended use, although it is not yet fully effective in facilitating transactions. This application is not really effective in increasing the number of customers because customers still have minimal knowledge regarding the function of this application. Then the increase in the number of customers did not increase too much, but there continued to be an increase every year, be it gold savings customers, pawnshops, etc.

Abstract:
Abstract Linker-Evolved-Group-Optimized-Lipophosphonoxins (LEGO-LPPO) are small synthetic modular peptidomimetics with promising antimicrobial activity. The LEGO-LPPO mechanism of antibacterial action has been determined to be the depolarization and disruption of bacterial membranes. Their modular nature is advantageous for fine tuning their biological properties. In order to optimize the structure of LEGO-LPPO even further, it is important to understand the interaction of LEGO-LPPO with bacterial membranes at the molecular level. In this work, we present the synthesis of five LEGO-LPPO (designated as 1_naph2-4-G to 5_naph2-4-G) molecules bearing fluorescent naphtylethyl moieties and their usage in the study of LEGO-LPPO behaviour in the membrane. Our goal was to characterize fluorescently labelled LEGO-LPPO under conditions that do not completely disrupt the membrane, mostly in the form of membrane-bound monomers.&amp;#xD;We observed the intramolecular interactions of hydrophobic modules of 1_naph2-4-G in the buffer by detecting dynamic naphthyl excimers and their disappearance after 1_naph2-4-G bind into the membranes. In the membrane, the molecule 1_naph2-4-G slightly affects the membrane fluidity of DOPG membranes above the phase transition. The naphthyl fluorophore itself has fast and almost unrestricted rotation around ethylene linking groups (rinf=0.010), which indicates a considerable chaotropic effect of the hydrophobic modules of 1_naph2-4-G at the given depth of the membrane.&amp;#xD;1_naph2-4-G proved to be a useful model for observing the interaction of LEGO-LPPO antibiotics with the phospholipid bilayer enabling us to decipher its effects on membrane state and dynamics; its binding and penetration into the membrane, its structure and the particular depth that it occupies.&amp;#xD;

Measures of agricultural and food policy in industrialized countries are increasingly targeted at food quality. Regulation by governments to guarantee food safety are at the heart of the public debate. Public instruments of quality assurance are introduced on markets via certification and labelling. Public support for organic production or guaranteed regional origin shall provide quality signals for consumers. Arguments for consumer protection, such as the Precautionary Principle, are stressed but they may serve as a rationale for non-tariff barriers to agricultural and food trade, too. In addition to the public activities a large number of private initiatives for quality assurance does exist in the food industry. So far, a comprehensive economic evaluation of the policy measures directed at food quality, the private-sector quality assurance initiatives, and their interaction is not available. Such an analysis has to account for consumers’ incomplete information, uncertainty about food quality as well as consumers’ information behaviour. Given this background, this special issue shall contribute to a well-founded economic evaluation of the role of markets and the state in assuring food quality. The following collection of papers covers a variety of important issues relating to food quality, consumer behaviour and the role of markets and the government as regards food safety. Case studies refer to a number of industrialized countries, namely the European Union, the US, Japan and New Zealand. Despite the variety of topics and case studies discussed, it is a common feature of all papers that they have a methodological focus - either in theoretical or quantitative analysis or both. In that sense, the authors show convincingly that analytical economic research can be applied fruitfully to food-quality and food-safety issues in the future, as it has to price analysis and agricultural market policy in the past. The first paper, by Charles B. Moss, Troy G. Schmitz and Andrew Schmitz, is titled "The brave new world: imperfect information, segregation costs, and genetically modified organisms". It deals with genetically modified (GM) foods where consumer resistance has been particularly high, especially in Europe. In a microeconomic framework, the authors argue that consumers' willingness to pay for GM-free products will lead to a market segregation between GM and non-GM foods. Simulations with their model indicate that segregation costs and the magnitude of the supply shift are crucial for the economic impacts of market segregation. Moss, Schmitz and Schmitz elaborate those combinations of market segregation costs and increased supply due to the new technology under which the society’s welfare remains unchanged or improves. Adequate responses to food safety concerns among consumers are increasingly important for political and business strategies targeted at consumer information. The next two contributions investigate survey and experimental data which can provide valuable insights for designing such strategies. First, Jochen Hartl and John Fox address the issue of consumer acceptance of new technologies in "Estimating the demand for risk reduction from foodborne pathogens through food irradiation". Applying a double-bounded dichotomous choice model to data from a mail survey in eight US states, they investigate consumers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for reduced risk from foodborne pathogens. They find that the median WTP exceeds the additional cost of irradiation, but that the "embedding effect" is also present so that WTP only partially reflects the extent of risk reduction. In their analysis they also test for isolated and combined impacts of further individual characteristics and design factors, providing insight in various topical and methodological issues related to the demand for risk reduction in foods. So, despite the fairly restricted use of food irradiation in the EU, the European audience receives information that will be relevant for further developments and research. Second, Michele Graffeo, Lucia Savadori, Luigi Lombardi, Katya Tentori, Nicolao Bonini and Rino Rumiati present results from an experimental study in their paper on "Trust and attitude in consumer food choices under risk". With this contribution, the European experience of declining consumer trust due to various food safety crises is taken into consideration. The authors test with a structural-equation model for different hypothesized causal linkages between specific elements of attitude, antecedents of trust in the food chain system, and food choice as the dependent variable. Their analysis identifies two affect-based elements of trust and attitude, respectively, i.e. perceived shared values and food consumption as a positive experience, as key factors determining food choice in the context of a food scare. However, overall trust in the food chain system does not have a significant impact on participants’ choices, thus questioning attempts in the EU to generally regain consumer trust. "Relating diet, demographics and lifestyle to increasing US obesity rates" is the contribution of Christiane Schroeter. Obesity is linked to the quality and quantity of foods consumed and it has become a major threat to human health in industrialized countries. Schroeter analyzes data from the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) within a multivariate analysis to investigate how obesity can be explained with these cross-sectional data. A major result is that a number of dietary, demographic and lifestyle variables affect the body-mass index. The author cannot confirm, however, the causality often postulated between fast-food consumption and obesity. An interesting Californian case study is then presented by Henrich Brunke, Julian M. Alston, Richard S. Gray and Daniel M. Sumner: "Industry-mandated testing to improve food safety: the new US marketing order for pistachios". Food safety events in pistachios have occurred on several occasions since 1997 and in various countries, when aflatoxin levels were too high. Established as a US federal marketing order by the Californian pistachio industry, the new US marketing order for pistachios is a form of collective action. The marketing order contains standards and controls to reduce the likelihood of dangerous pistachios and further food safety events. The authors present simulations with a pistachio market model indicating that the net welfare effect of the new marketing order is in all cases positive. The marketing order, according to Brunke et al., raises the benefits of consumers and producers by guaranteeing a safer product. The following paper by Sayed H. Saghaian and Michael R. Reed analyses the "Demand for quality-differentiated beef in Japan", a country where consumers have very discriminating tastes and are willing to pay very high prices for high-quality food. This is clearly shown by large price differences between four origins, two domestic beef types plus imports from Australia and the US, reported by the authors for four different beef cuts. Based on a model of vertical product differentiation, Saghaian and Reed estimate an inverse demand system for each beef cut, which allows to capture non-price quality competition. Their analysis shows that Japanese consumers prefer domestically produced beef to imported beef and that quality-related substitution effects exist among the various origins. This paper clearly stresses the need for market analyses based on more detailed data, in particular for marketing applications. The final paper, by Mohammed Khaled, Vhari McWha and Ralph Lattimore, is titled "Fragmenting markets and quality change in New Zealand foods: empirical analysis with a Rotterdam model". The authors estimate a demand system, present a comprehensive set of food price and expenditure elasticities and analyze structural changes in New Zealand’s food demand over the last two decades. Various trends, like the increasing household consumption of fruits and vegetables, poultry and food away from home, are related to changes in consumers’ perspectives of food quality. Additionally, Khaled, McWha and Lattimore show that the consumption of major foods like fish, poultry, and meat or meals away from home have become more price elastic compared to earlier studies. The authors address this to increasing market fragmentation, i.e. the development of increasingly heterogeneous markets as a consequence of more differentiated consumer preferences. In general, the set of articles in this special issue covers many interesting topics and raises new questions. Therefore, we hope that the methodological approaches and the issues covered here will stimulate future economic research on food quality and food safety.

Abstract:
One of the greatest joys in watching Foxtel is to see all the crazy people who run talk shows. Judgement, ridicule and generalisations slip from their tongues like overcooked lamb off a bone. From Oprah to Rikki, from Jerry to Mother Love, the posterior of pop culture claims a world-wide audience. Recently, a new talk diva was added to the pay television stable. Dr Laura Schlessinger, the Mother of Morals, prowls the soundstage. attacking 'selfish acts' such as divorce, de facto relationships and voting Democrat. On April 11, 2001, a show aired in Australia that added a new demon to the decadence of the age. Dr Laura had been told that a disgusting video clip, called 'Rock DJ', had been televised at 2:30pm on MTV. Children could have been watching. The footage that so troubled our doyenne of daytime featured the British performer Robbie Williams not only stripping in front of disinterested women, but then removing skin, muscle and tissue in a desperate attempt to claim their gaze. This was too much for Dr Laura. She was horrified: her strident tone became piercing. She screeched, "this is si-ee-ck." . My paper is drawn to this sick masculinity, not to judge - but to laugh and theorise. Robbie Williams, the deity of levity, holds a pivotal role in theorising the contemporary 'crisis' of manhood. To paraphrase Austin Powers, Williams returned the ger to singer. But Williams also triumphed in a captivatingly original way. He is one of the few members of a boy band who created a successful solo career without regurgitating the middle of the road mantras of boys, girls, love, loss and whining about it. Williams' journey through post-war popular music, encompassing influences from both Sinatra and Sonique, forms a functional collage, rather than patchwork, of masculinity. He has been prepared to not only age in public, but to discuss the crevices and cracks in the facade. He strips, smokes, plays football, wears interesting underwear and drinks too much. My short paper trails behind this combustible masculinity, focussing on his sorties with both masculine modalities and the rock discourse. My words attack the gap between text and readership, beat and ear, music and men. The aim is to reveal how this 'sick masculinity' problematises the conservative rendering of men's crisis. Come follow me I'm an honorary Sean Connery, born '74 There's only one of me … Press be asking do I care for sodomy I don't know, yeah, probably I've been looking for serial monogamy Not some bird that looks like Billy Connolly But for now I'm down for ornithology Grab your binoculars, come follow me. 'Kids,' Robbie Williams Robbie Williams is a man for our age. Between dating supermodels and Geri 'Lost Spice' Halliwell [1], he has time to "love … his mum and a pint," (Ansen 85) but also subvert the Oasis cock(rock)tail by frocking up for a television appearance. Williams is important to theories of masculine representation. As a masculinity to think with, he creates popular culture with a history. In an era where Madonna practices yoga and wears cowboy boots, it is no surprise that by June 2000, Robbie Williams was voted the world's sexist man [2]. A few months later, in the October edition of Vogue, he posed in a British flag bikini. It is reassuring in an era where a 12 year old boy states that "You aren't a man until you shoot at something," (Issac in Mendel 19) that positive male role models exist who are prepared to both wear a frock and strip on national television. Reading Robbie Williams is like dipping into the most convincing but draining of intellectual texts. He is masculinity in motion, conveying foreignness, transgression and corruption, bartering in the polymorphous economies of sex, colonialism, race, gender and nation. His career has spanned the boy bands, try-hard rock, video star and hybrid pop performer. There are obvious resonances between the changes to Williams and alterations in masculinity. In 1988, Suzanne Moore described (the artist still known as) Prince as "the pimp of postmodernism." (165-166) Over a decade later, the simulacra has a new tour guide. Williams revels in the potency of representation. He rarely sings about love or romance, as was his sonic fodder in Take That. Instead, his performance is fixated on becoming a better man, glancing an analytical eye over other modes of masculinity. Notions of masculine crisis and sickness have punctuated this era. Men's studies is a boom area of cultural studies, dislodging the assumed structures of popular culture [3]. William Pollack's Real Boys has created a culture of changing expectations for men. The greater question arising from his concerns is why these problems, traumas and difficulties are emerging in our present. Pollack's argument is that boys and young men invest energy and time "disguising their deepest and most vulnerable feelings." (15) This masking is difficult to discern within dance and popular music. Through lyrics and dancing, videos and choreography, masculinity is revealed as convoluted, complex and fragmented. While rock music is legitimised by dominant ideologies, marginalised groups frequently use disempowered genres - like country, dance and rap genres - to present oppositional messages. These competing representations expose seamless interpretations of competent masculinity. Particular skills are necessary to rip the metaphoric pacifier out of the masculine mouth of popular culture. Patriarchal pop revels in the paradoxes of everyday life. Frequently these are nostalgic visions, which Kimmel described as a "retreat to a bygone era." (87) It is the recognition of a shared, simpler past that provides reinforcement to heteronormativity. Williams, as a gaffer tape masculinity, pulls apart the gaps and crevices in representation. Theorists must open the interpretative space encircling popular culture, disrupting normalising criteria. Multiple nodes of assessment allow a ranking of competent masculinity. From sport to business, drinking to sex, masculinity is transformed into a wired site of ranking, judgement and determination. Popular music swims in the spectacle of maleness. From David Lee Roth's skied splits to Eminem's beanie, young men are interpellated as subjects in patriarchy. Robbie Williams is a history lesson in post war masculinity. This nostalgia is conservative in nature. The ironic pastiche within his music videos features motor racing, heavy metal and Bond films. 'Rock DJ', the 'sick text' that vexed Doctor Laura, is Williams' most elaborate video. Set in a rollerdrome with female skaters encircling a central podium, the object of fascination and fetish is a male stripper. This strip is different though, as it disrupts the power held by men in phallocentralism. After being confronted by Williams' naked body, the observing women are both bored and disappointed at the lack-lustre deployment of masculine genitalia. After this display, Williams appears embarrassed, confused and humiliated. As Buchbinder realised, "No actual penis could every really measure up to the imagined sexual potency and social or magical power of the phallus." (49) To render this banal experience of male nudity ridiculous, Williams then proceeds to remove skin and muscle. He finally becomes an object of attraction for the female DJ only in skeletal form. By 'going all the way,' the strip confirms the predictability of masculinity and the ordinariness of the male body. For literate listeners though, a higher level of connotation is revealed. The song itself is based on Barry White's melody for 'It's ecstasy (when you lay down next to me).' Such intertextuality accesses the meta-racist excesses of a licentious black male sexuality. A white boy dancer must deliver an impotent, but ironic, rendering of White's (love unlimited) orchestration of potent sexuality. Williams' iconography and soundtrack is refreshing, emerging from an era of "men who cling … tightly to their illusions." (Faludi 14) When the ideological drapery is cut away, the male body is a major disappointment. Masculinity is an anxious performance. Fascinatingly, this deconstructive video has been demeaned through its labelling as pornography [4]. Oddly, a man who is prepared to - literally - shave the skin of masculinity is rendered offensive. Men's studies, like feminism, has been defrocking masculinity for some time. Robinson for example, expressed little sympathy for "whiny men jumping on the victimisation bandwagon or playing cowboys and Indians at warrior weekends and beating drums in sweat lodges." (6) By grating men's identity back to the body, the link between surface and depth - or identity and self - is forged. 'Rock DJ' attacks the new subjectivities of the male body by not only generating self-surveillance, but humour through the removal of clothes, skin and muscle. He continues this play with the symbols of masculine performance throughout the album Sing when you're winning. Featuring soccer photographs of players, coaches and fans, closer inspection of the images reveal that Robbie Williams is actually every character, in every role. His live show also enfolds diverse performances. Singing a version of 'My Way,' with cigarette in tow, he remixes Frank Sinatra into a replaying and recutting of masculine fabric. He follows one dominating masculinity with another: the Bond-inspired 'Millennium.' Some say that we are players Some say that we are pawns But we've been making money Since the day we were born Robbie Williams is comfortably located in a long history of post-Sinatra popular music. He mocks the rock ethos by combining guitars and drums with a gleaming brass section, hailing the lounge act of Dean Martin, while also using rap and dance samples. Although carrying fifty year's of crooner baggage, the spicy scent of homosexuality has also danced around Robbie Williams' career. Much of this ideology can be traced back to the Take That years. As Gary Barlow and Jason Orange commented at the time, Jason: So the rumour is we're all gay now are we? Gary: Am I gay? I am? Why? Oh good. Just as long as we know. Howard: Does anyone think I'm gay? Jason: No, you're the only one people think is straight. Howard: Why aren't I gay? What's wrong with me? Jason: It's because you're such a fine figure of macho manhood.(Kadis 17) For those not literate in the Take That discourse, it should come as no surprise that Howard was the TT equivalent of The Beatle's Ringo Starr or Duran Duran's Andy Taylor. Every boy band requires the ugly, shy member to make the others appear taller and more attractive. The inference of this dialogue is that the other members of the group are simply too handsome to be heterosexual. This ambiguous sexuality has followed Williams into his solo career, becoming fodder for those lads too unappealing to be homosexual: Oasis. Born to be mild I seem to spend my life Just waiting for the chorus 'Cause the verse is never nearly Good enough Robbie Williams "Singing for the lonely." Robbie Williams accesses a bigger, brighter and bolder future than Britpop. While the Gallagher brothers emulate and worship the icons of 1960s British music - from the Beatles' haircuts to the Stones' psychedelia - Williams' songs, videos and persona are chattering in a broader cultural field. From Noel Cowardesque allusions to the ordinariness of pub culture, Williams is much more than a pretty-boy singer. He has become an icon of English masculinity, enclosing all the complexity that these two terms convey. Williams' solo success from 1999-2001 occurred at the time of much parochial concern that British acts were not performing well in the American charts. It is bemusing to read Billboard over this period. The obvious quality of Britney Spears is seen to dwarf the mediocrity of British performers. The calibre of Fatboy Slim, carrying a smiley backpack stuffed with reflexive dance culture, is neither admitted nor discussed. It is becoming increasing strange to monitor the excessive fame of Williams in Britain, Europe, Asia and the Pacific when compared to his patchy career in the United States. Even some American magazines are trying to grasp the disparity. The swaggering king of Britpop sold a relatively measly 600,000 copies of his U.S. debut album, The ego has landed … Maybe Americans didn't appreciate his songs about being famous. (Ask Dr. Hip 72) In the first few years of the 2000s, it has been difficult to discuss a unified Anglo-American musical formation. Divergent discursive frameworks have emerged through this British evasion. There is no longer an agreed centre to the musical model. Throughout 1990s Britain, blackness jutted out of dance floor mixes, from reggae to dub, jazz and jungle. Plied with the coldness of techno was an almost too hot hip hop. Yet both were alternate trajectories to Cool Britannia. London once more became swinging, or as Vanity Fair declared, "the nerve centre of pop's most cohesive scene since the Pacific Northwest grunge explosion of 1991." (Kamp 102) Through Britpop, the clock turned back to the 1960s, a simpler time before race became 'a problem' for the nation. An affiliation was made between a New Labour, formed by the 1997 British election, and the rebirth of a Swinging London [5]. This style-driven empire supposedly - again - made London the centre of the world. Britpop was itself a misnaming. It was a strong sense of Englishness that permeated the lyrics, iconography and accent. Englishness requires a Britishness to invoke a sense of bigness and greatness. The contradictions and excesses of Blur, Oasis and Pulp resonate in the gap between centre and periphery, imperial core and colonised other. Slicing through the arrogance and anger of the Gallaghers is a yearning for colonial simplicity, when the pink portions of the map were the stable subjects of geography lessons, rather than the volatile embodiment of postcolonial theory. Simon Gikandi argues that "the central moments of English cultural identity were driven by doubts and disputes about the perimeters of the values that defined Englishness." (x) The reason that Britpop could not 'make it big' in the United States is because it was recycling an exhausted colonial dreaming. Two old Englands were duelling for ascendancy: the Oasis-inflected Manchester working class fought Blur-inspired London art school chic. This insular understanding of difference had serious social and cultural consequences. The only possible representation of white, British youth was a tabloidisation of Oasis's behaviour through swearing, drug excess and violence. Simon Reynolds realised that by returning to the three minute pop tune that the milkman can whistle, reinvoking parochial England with no black people, Britpop has turned its back defiantly on the future. (members.aol.com/blissout/Britpop.html) Fortunately, another future had already happened. The beats per minute were pulsating with an urgent affirmation of change, hybridity and difference. Hip hop and techno mapped a careful cartography of race. While rock was colonialisation by other means, hip hop enacted a decolonial imperative. Electronic dance music provided a unique rendering of identity throughout the 1990s. It was a mode of musical communication that moved across national and linguistic boundaries, far beyond Britpop or Stateside rock music. While the Anglo American military alliance was matched and shadowed by postwar popular culture, Brit-pop signalled the end of this hegemonic formation. From this point, English pop and American rock would not sail as smoothly over the Atlantic. While 1995 was the year of Wonderwall, by 1996 the Britpop bubble corroded the faces of the Gallagher brothers. Oasis was unable to complete the American tour. Yet other cultural forces were already active. 1996 was also the year of Trainspotting, with "Born Slippy" being the soundtrack for a blissful journey under the radar. This was a cultural force that no longer required America as a reference point [6]. Robbie Williams was able to integrate the histories of Britpop and dance culture, instigating a complex dialogue between the two. Still, concern peppered music and entertainment journals that British performers were not accessing 'America.' As Sharon Swart stated Britpop acts, on the other hand, are finding it less easy to crack the U.S. market. The Spice Girls may have made some early headway, but fellow purveyors of pop, such as Robbie Williams, can't seem to get satisfaction from American fans. (35 British performers had numerous cultural forces working against them. Flat global sales, the strength of the sterling and the slow response to the new technological opportunities of DVD, all caused problems. While Britpop "cleaned house," (Boehm 89) it was uncertain which cultural formation would replace this colonising force. Because of the complex dialogues between the rock discourse and dance culture, time and space were unable to align into a unified market. American critics simply could not grasp Robbie Williams' history, motives or iconography. It's Robbie's world, we just buy tickets for it. Unless, of course you're American and you don't know jack about soccer. That's the first mistake Williams makes - if indeed one of his goals is to break big in the U.S. (and I can't believe someone so ambitious would settle for less.) … Americans, it seems, are most fascinated by British pop when it presents a mirror image of American pop. (Woods 98 There is little sense that an entirely different musical economy now circulates, where making it big in the United States is not the singular marker of credibility. Williams' demonstrates commitment to the international market, focussing on MTV Asia, MTV online, New Zealand and Australian audiences [7]. The Gallagher brothers spent much of the 1990s trying to be John Lennon. While Noel, at times, knocked at the door of rock legends through "Wonderwall," he snubbed Williams' penchant for pop glory, describing him as a "fat dancer." (Gallagher in Orecklin 101) Dancing should not be decried so summarily. It conveys subtle nodes of bodily knowledge about men, women, sex and desire. While men are validated for bodily movement through sport, women's dancing remains a performance of voyeuristic attention. Such a divide is highly repressive of men who dance, with gayness infiltrating the metaphoric masculine dancefloor [8]. Too often the binary of male and female is enmeshed into the divide of rock and dance. Actually, these categories slide elegantly over each other. The male pop singers are located in a significant semiotic space. Robbie Williams carries these contradictions and controversy. NO! Robbie didn't go on NME's cover in a 'desperate' attempt to seduce nine-year old knickerwetters … YES! He used to be teenybopper fodder. SO WHAT?! So did the Beatles the Stones, the Who, the Kinks, etc blah blah pseudohistoricalrockbollocks. NO! Making music that gurlz like is NOT a crime! (Wells 62) There remains an uncertainty in his performance of masculinity and at times, a deliberate ambivalence. He grafts subversiveness into a specific lineage of English pop music. The aim for critics of popular music is to find a way to create a rhythm of resistance, rather than melody of credible meanings. In summoning an archaeology of the archive, we begin to write a popular music history. Suzanne Moore asked why men should "be interested in a sexual politics based on the frightfully old-fashioned ideas of truth, identity and history?" (175) The reason is now obvious. Femininity is no longer alone on the simulacra. It is impossible to separate real men from the representations of masculinity that dress the corporeal form. Popular music is pivotal, not for collapsing the representation into the real, but for making the space between these states livable, and pleasurable. Like all semiotic sicknesses, the damaged, beaten and bandaged masculinity of contemporary music swaddles a healing pedagogic formation. Robbie Williams enables the writing of a critical history of post Anglo-American music [9]. Popular music captures such stories of place and identity. Significantly though, it also opens out spaces of knowing. There is an investment in rhythm that transgresses national histories of music. While Williams has produced albums, singles, video and endless newspaper copy, his most important revelations are volatile and ephemeral in their impact. He increases the popular cultural vocabulary of masculinity. [1] The fame of both Williams and Halliwell was at such a level that it was reported in the generally conservative, pages of Marketing. The piece was titled "Will Geri's fling lose its fizz?" Marketing, August 2000: 17. [2] For poll results, please refer to "Winners and Losers," Time International, Vol. 155, Issue 23, June 12, 2000, 9 [3] For a discussion of this growth in academic discourse on masculinity, please refer to Paul Smith's "Introduction," in P. Smith (ed.), Boys: Masculinity in contemporary culture. Colorado: Westview Press, 1996. [4] Steve Futterman described Rock DJ as the "least alluring porn video on MTV," in "The best and worst: honour roll," Entertainment Weekly 574-575 (December 22-December 29 2000): 146. [5] Michael Bracewell stated that "pop provides an unofficial cartography of its host culture, charting the national mood, marking the crossroads between the major social trends and the tunnels of the zeitgeist," in "Britpop's coming home, it's coming home." New Statesman .(February 21 1997): 36. [6] It is important to make my point clear. The 'America' that I am summoning here is a popular cultural formation, which possesses little connection with the territory, institution or defence initiatives of the United States. Simon Frith made this distinction clear, when he stated that "the question becomes whether 'America' can continue to be the mythical locale of popular culture as it has been through most of this century. As I've suggested, there are reasons now to suppose that 'America' itself, as a pop cultural myth, no longer bears much resemblance to the USA as a real place even in the myth." This statement was made in "Anglo-America and its discontents," Cultural Studies 5 1991: 268. [7] To observe the scale of attention paid to the Asian and Pacific markets, please refer to http://robbiewilliams.com/july13scroll.html, http://robbiewilliams.com/july19scroll.html and http://robbiewilliams.com/july24scroll.html, accessed on March 3, 2001 [8] At its most naïve, J. Michael Bailey and Michael Oberschneider asked, "Why are gay men so motivated to dance? One hypothesis is that gay men dance in order to be feminine. In other words, gay men dance because women do. An alternative hypothesis is that gay men and women share a common factor in their emotional make-up that makes dancing especially enjoyable," from "Sexual orientation in professional dance," Archives of Sexual Behaviour. 26.4 (August 1997). Such an interpretation is particularly ludicrous when considering the pre-rock and roll masculine dancing rituals in the jive, Charleston and jitterbug. Once more, the history of rock music is obscuring the history of dance both before the mid 1950s and after acid house. [9] Women, gay men and black communities through much of the twentieth century have used these popular spaces. For example, Lynne Segal, in Slow Motion. London: Virago, 1990, stated that "through dancing, athletic and erotic performance, but most powerfully through music, Black men could express something about the body and its physicality, about emotions and their cosmic reach, rarely found in white culture - least of all in white male culture,": 191 References Ansen, D., Giles, J., Kroll, J., Gates, D. and Schoemer, K. Abstract:
Introduction Artificial intelligence (AI) and its applications, such as large language models and generative AI, have become some of the most hotly debated technologies of our time. While they are often seen as harbingers of progress, they also evoke fear and uncertainty regarding their potential societal impacts. Mass media, especially journalism, play a pivotal role in shaping public opinion on these technologies. In democratic societies, journalism is tasked with educating and informing the public, contributing to collective understanding and opinion formation. Brause et al. state that “media coverage of Al technologies is an important indicator of the central issues, actors, frames and evaluations attached to technology, and a critical arena where stakeholders negotiate future pathways for Al and its role in societies” (277). However, how key technologies like AI are visually represented in editorial media remains an underexplored topic in current research. Which photos and/or illustrations are used to accompany news articles about this technology and its impact on society? This is of high importance to the overall understanding of the media representation of AI—a question at the intersection of visual studies, cultural studies, and communication studies. Previous research has shown that how new technologies are depicted (and not only how they are described) can significantly shape public discourse at multiple levels (Zeller et al.; Kelly). For instance, studies of nanotechnology, a topic whose societal debate parallels some aspects of the current discourse about AI, reveal that media stories about these debates are often illustrated with rather stereotypical elements. Lösch notes that they are “frequently illustrated in mass media publications with futuristic science-fiction images” (255). This trend—depicting real technologies and their (as yet uncertain) societal consequences using visual tropes from science fiction, such as robots, androids, code, and futuristic models—can also be observed in recent discussions around AI, particularly in journalistic descriptions of the potential dangers posed by AI systems to society and humanity. This article aims to examine how selected articles from German quality media (a definition of the term can be found in Meier and in Arnold), published between January and September 2024, visually illustrate the topic of “AI risks and dangers”. Rather than analysing the content of these articles, the focus will be on their visual accompaniment, exploring how images are used to shape public understanding of AI risks, often with a highly artificial appeal and Anmutung (impression). The Representation of Technology in German Mass Media Germany is sometimes perceived as a country that approaches digital technologies with caution, particularly regarding data protection and privacy rights. This is also partly true for the debates around artificial intelligence. Köstler and Ossewaarde argue that “it is a discourse that is marked by a certain alarmism about the future of the German economy” (250). Digitalisation and automation are perceived ambivalently by the German population (Störk-Biber et al. 30). On one hand, there are expectations of increased convenience; on the other hand, these are countered by risks, primarily related to perceived susceptibility to disruptions and threats to individual autonomy (30). Germany has comprehensive data protection laws at both federal and state levels, covering public and private sectors alike. Germans show strong public interest in privacy, as seen in widespread opposition to data retention laws and a strong support of privacy, illustrated for example by the fact that “240,000 persons in Germany have opted out of Google Street View“ (Schwarz 289). Researchers sometimes attribute this rather sceptical attitude towards digital technologies to Germany’s historical experiences with authoritarian regimes, describing a “climate of fundamental mistrust of the state, its security agencies and the new possibilities of data collection” (Knorre 17). This mistrust has resulted in a rather negative view of Big Data applications in Germany, and perpetuates a “narrative of the machine taking on a life of its own, which is associated with the term artificial intelligence” (Knorre 29). However, it has also been noted that Germany “takes a middle position in terms of attitudes toward digitalization in a European comparison” (Störk-Biber et al. 30), but that “there are also growing concerns about pressures, risks, and dependencies, whose responsible management is expected not only from the government and associations but also from companies” (31). This study does not conduct a textual framing analysis, which has already been extensively applied in other contexts, such as the portrayal of digitalisation processes in German media (Zeller et al.). Instead, it focusses on visual communication and how it contributes to popular perceptions of the technology. That the selection of images plays an important role in journalism has been widely demonstrated (Sargent 705). Furthermore, it has been shown that articles without accompanying imagery get shared less often on social media, underlining the “importance of images in driving news consumption” (Keib 202). Kelly highlights the significant role mass media play in the adoption of new technologies: “technology is rarely adopted on its merits alone; social forces both constrain and encourage adoption. Mass media is a significant influence, along with other social forces, in all stages of adoption” (34). By looking at photos and illustrations, this study seeks to examine the visual culture surrounding AI by showcasing a sample of such imagery and making it accessible for academic discourse, and thus, helping to validate the often expressed notion that “science fictional tropes abound in news coverage of A.I.” (Goode). Given the pressures of time, budget, and labour that often accompany journalistic production, even within the realm of quality journalism, the selection of images should not be over-interpreted. Nonetheless, these visual representations provide valuable insight into the motifs frequently used to depict AI risks, offering a glimpse into how the media visually communicate complex technologies. Accordingly, the research question (RQ1) for this study was: What are the visual elements of journalistic coverage of the potential risks of artificial intelligence in German news media from January to September 2024? Methodology This study uses the method of qualitative content analysis (Mayring), which aims to “conceptualize the process of assigning categories to text passages as a qualitative-interpretive act, following content-analytical rules” (10). The qualitative content analysis method with inductive category development was chosen as the most suitable for this study. Since there is little existing research on the visual representation of AI risks in the media, the inductive method provides the flexibility needed to develop new categories from the image data, without being constrained by pre-existing theories or hypotheses. To gain access to the data for further analysis, an Internet search was conducted using Google News with the keywords “KI Gefahr” (AI danger) and “KI Warnung” (AI warning) from 1 January to 1 September 2024, focussing exclusively on German-language media. Only articles from quality journalism outlets were considered, to exclude non-journalistic trade publications, advertising, and public relations-driven articles. Only visual accompaniments, such as illustrations and photos, were included in the analysis. Videos and preview images for videos were excluded. This timeframe was chosen because it represents an era where artificial intelligence has been established as a main interest after the initial hype surrounding the first publication of OpenAI’s ChatGPT Model in late 2022. A cursory content analysis was conducted to ensure that only articles taking a critical stance on AI were included in the dataset, and no mislabelling took place. The final dataset consists of 21 images drawn from quality journalism sources, defined by their adherence to journalistic standards such as accuracy, independence, and balance, and came from the following outlets (in alphabetical order): Deutsche Welle, Deutschlandfunk, FAZ, Frankfurter Rundschau, Handelsblatt, NZZ, SRF, SWR, Tagesspiegel, WDR, Welt, ZDF. The study uses QCAmap software, designed specifically for qualitative content analysis, to systematically code and structure the visual material. This approach ensures that the process of category development remains transparent and iterative, allowing for the emergence of unexpected patterns and visual trends within the media portrayals of AI risks. Following the rules of qualitative content analysis, the categories were revised after coding 30% of the material, with minor adaptions in the categories being made. In total, 12 categories (RQ1-1 – RQ1-12)—some of them clustered into subcategories—emerged from the data. Results The qualitative content analysis of 21 illustrative images using QCAmap with inductive category formation revealed significant trends in the visual depiction of artificial intelligence (AI) and its associated risks in German quality media. The analysis identified six major categories, which accounted for the recurring themes and motifs used in these visual representations. In terms of sources of the visual elements, it can be said that some images come from established sources like Deutsche Presse Agentur or stock photo sites; others were created using generative AI. Below are the key findings from each main category. The analysis of visual representations of artificial intelligence (AI) in German quality media has revealed several recurring categories and subcategories, each contributing to a broader understanding of how AI risks are visually framed. These categories reflect both stereotypical and evolving approaches to depicting AI and its implications for society. By identifying these categories, we can better understand the media’s role in shaping public perceptions of AI, often using simplified imagery that may obscure the technology’s complexity. The following categories emerged from the data: Depiction of Anthropomorphic Robots (RQ1-1, RQ1-2) emerged as a significant category, appearing in 13% of the total images and present in 39% of the analysed material. Subcategories included Anthropomorphic Robots in Interaction with Humans (RQ1-1) and Anthropomorphic Robots without Interaction with Humans (RQ1-2). These subcategories highlight the persistent portrayal of AI as humanoid robots, either interacting with humans or existing independently. This simplification of AI as a physical, human-like entity reflects a popular science fiction trope, where AI is depicted as embodied in mechanical figures. Although AI is primarily an abstract and non-physical technology, the media continue to reinforce the stereotype of AI as robots, reducing the complexity of the technology to something tangible and relatable. The relatively high frequency of these depictions points to a strong cultural association between AI and humanoid robots, which oversimplifies its potential societal roles. Depiction of Humans and/or Human Body Parts (RQ1-3, RQ1-4, RQ1-5, RQ1-7, RQ1-11) was the most prevalent category, accounting for 35% of the total images and appearing in 78% of the analysed visual elements. This category included subcategories such as Human Brain Merged with Technical Elements (RQ1-3) and Human Head Merged with Technical Elements (RQ1-4), which visually merge human and machine elements. Other common subcategories included Depiction of Hands (RQ1-5) and Depiction of Eyes (RQ1-7), both of which suggest a focus on human interaction with technology. The subcategory Abstraction of Humans (RQ1-11) highlights more generalised representations of humans in abstract form. These images evoke AI’s direct impact on human life, highlighting the merging of human capabilities with technological enhancement. The dominance of these visuals in the dataset suggests that media coverage of AI is focussed primarily on the relationship between humans and AI, reflecting societal concerns about AI’s integration into everyday life and its potential to augment or replace human capabilities. Blue/Grey Colour Scheme (RQ1-6) was another prominent category, representing 18% of the total images and appearing in 52% of the material studied. This aesthetic choice conveys neutrality, coldness, and futuristic detachment, reinforcing the idea of AI as a distant, clinical, and impersonal force. The widespread use of this colour palette reflects a broader cultural association between technology and these detached tones, further distancing AI from its human impacts. The prevalence of this colour scheme suggests that media frequently frame AI in a way that emphasises its technical and inhuman characteristics, contributing to public perceptions of AI as something beyond ordinary human control. Depiction of Computers (RQ1-8, RQ1-10) was another significant category, appearing in 23% of the total images and 47% of the analysed material. The subcategories included Depiction of (Pseudo-)Computer Code (RQ1-8) and Depiction of Computers/Computer Components (RQ1-10). These images emphasise AI’s technical foundation and its association with computing systems, underscoring its computational origins. The frequent use of computer-related visuals suggests that media outlets focus heavily on the technical aspects of AI, reinforcing the perception of AI as a machine-driven entity rather than a social or creative tool. An especially intriguing category was AI-Generated Images (RQ1-9), which accounted for 7% of the total images and appeared in 21% of the material. This subcategory, Image Created by AI (by the Article Author) (RQ1-9), highlights the growing irony in media production: articles about AI risks, including fears of job losses, were illustrated with AI-generated images. This not only exemplifies the immediate impact of AI on the creative industries but also underscores the irony that AI is already displacing professional illustrators, even in media discussing the dangers of AI to the job market. The prevalence of this category reflects a significant shift in media production processes, where AI is increasingly being used as both the subject and the tool of visual representation. Finally, the category No Relevant Category / Other Depictions (RQ1-12) represented only 1% of the total images, appearing in 4% of the visual accompaniments. This small subset of images that did not fit into any established categories suggests that, while certain visual themes have become standardised in media representations of AI, there remains occasional variability, indicating a level of experimentation and adaptation as the discourse on AI continues to evolve. In conclusion, these categories reflect the media’s reliance on familiar and sometimes clichéd visual motifs to depict AI. The anthropomorphisation of AI as robots, the merging of human and machine imagery, and the use of AI-generated images all reveal the complexities and contradictions inherent in how AI is framed in public discourse. The dominance of human-AI interaction depictions and the frequent use of technical imagery indicate that media representations are shaped by both cultural anxieties and the need for clear, engaging visuals. Conclusion Representing complex social and digital phenomena presents a significant challenge for journalists, particularly in an era where visual media often dominate communication (Shifman). This difficulty becomes especially pronounced in the depiction of technological innovations and their potential risks. While innovations are frequently hailed as engines of progress and economic growth, media portrayals tend to simplify and aestheticise these developments, often masking the intricate and ambivalent realities inherent to technological and societal change. In contemporary visual culture, there is an increasing demand for imagery that not only informs but also evokes emotional responses and captures attention. Consequently, the media often resort to stereotypical and reductive representations in an effort to communicate the complexity of these phenomena. However, such portrayals risk distorting the perception of reality by reinforcing stereotypes and potentially overshadowing the positive dimensions of innovation. They also underline the abstract nature of the technology, hinting at components of the “blackbox” that was described by Luhmann in the 1980s and is currently the subject of much interdisciplinary research (Geitz et al.) This study is based on a relatively small sample and a limited timeframe, covering articles published between January and September 2024. Due to the narrow scope of the research, the findings should not be seen as broadly generalisable or indicative of all media representations of AI. Rather, this analysis serves as an initial inventory of how AI risks are visually depicted in a specific context. As such, it highlights trends that require further exploration, and future research should expand on these results with a larger dataset and over an extended period to develop more comprehensive conclusions. The analysis has shown that German media frequently rely on clichéd visuals, which ultimately reinforce a narrow and fear-inducing portrayal that fails to capture the full complexity of these phenomena. They include the Depiction of Anthropomorphic Robots, the Depiction of Humans and/or Human Body Parts, the use of a Blue/Grey Colour Scheme, and the Depiction of Computers, all of which are well-established visual codes for innovation and their potential risks, showing evidence of what Goode calls an “emergent entity that sits uneasily between a (Western) dichotomy of life and non-life, one that appears capable of harbouring an apocalyptic capacity to overturn human life as we know it“ (203). Perhaps the most ironic and thought-provoking category is AI-Generated Images. In a striking twist, some articles discussing the dangers of AI, including fears of job losses, were illustrated with AI-generated images by the authors of the very same text—quite literally replacing the job of a professional illustrator. This irony adds another layer of meaning to the analysis, as the very technology being criticised for its potential to replace human labour is already doing so in the production of the articles themselves. It raises questions about the ethics and implications of AI in creative industries and demonstrates the immediate, real-world impact of AI on human employment. The study has also highlighted the challenges of communicating intricate and rapidly evolving technological issues. The fragmented and fast-paced nature of contemporary media, along with the contextual nature of meanings attributed to technology, complicates the task of presenting a balanced and nuanced view (Sturdee et al.) Overall, this research has underscored the need for more differentiated and realistic visual representations in media coverage of technological innovations. By moving beyond stereotypical imagery, the media could provide a more accurate portrayal of the complexities surrounding these advancements. While these visuals help communicate the abstract concept of AI to a broad audience, they may also reinforce stereotypes that oversimplify the technology and its societal implications. The study highlights the need for more nuanced and accurate portrayals of AI in the media, to foster a more informed and comprehensive public understanding of this rapidly evolving field. Outlook This research could be extended in several meaningful ways. One approach would be to expand the analysis to other countries, particularly those in the Anglo-American world, which are often described in research as more optimistic about technological advancements (Gerybadze). Additionally, a combined approach of textual analysis, examining the interaction between visual elements and the narrative content of written texts, could be promising for identifying potential discrepancies. Furthermore, conducting guided interviews with the editors responsible for visual content selection could provide valuable insights into the reasoning behind these choices, as well as a deeper understanding of the messages and meta-messages conveyed through the use of specific visual motifs.
