We believed that the configurational lability of 6p systems could be reduced by constraining them within a ring system. A variety of methyl biphenyl-2-acrylate precursors, substituted in the 2’-, 3’- or 4’-positions, were synthesised using a Suzuki coupling reaction between 2-formylphenylboronic acid and the appropriate aryl halide, followed by Wittig olefination. An increasing number of observations have shown that gaseous debris discs are not an exception. However, until now, we only knew of cases around A stars. Here we present the first detection of (CO)-C-12 (2-1) disc emission around an F star, HD 181327, obtained with the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations at 1.3 mm. HARMONI is the visible and near-infrared integral field spectrograph due to be one of the first light instruments on the European Extremely Large Telescope. The prototype HARMONI lens mounts were cryogenically tested, to measure the radial decentre of the lens as it was cooled to 130 K. Initial problems of the epoxy cracking the lens were solved by switching to a silicone RTV adhesive. This thesis has two main themes both with synthetic organic photochemistry at the centre of their research aims. The first deals with the synthesis of [2.0.n] cyclobutenes via the photo [2+2] cycloaddition of propargyl alcohol with an appropriate unsaturated anhydride followed by their thermal electrocyc1ic ring opening. Abstract:

We present the first Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the closest known extrasolar debris disc. This disc orbits the star is an element of Eri, a K-type star just 3.2 pc away. Due to the proximity of the star, the entire disc cannot fit within the ALMA field of view. Therefore, the observations have been centred 18" North of the star, providing us with a clear detection of the Northern arc of the ring, at a wavelength of 1.3 mm. The observed disc emission is found to be narrow with a width of just 11-13 AU. The fractional disc width we find is comparable to t

Approved for public release; distribution unlimited.<br>This thesis presents an analysis of the performance of a local mobile radio communications system utilizing the Aloha random access protocol with variable length packets. The capture phenomenon due to the nearfar effect that enhances the performance of the system is investigated. A tagged packet will capture the base station if its signal-to-interference ratio exceeds a threshold gamma sub zero.
