Abstract:

The Graceful Tree Conjecture is a problem in graph theory that dates back to 1967. It suggests that every tree on n nodes can be labelled with the integers [1..n] such that the edges, when labelled with the difference between their endpoint node labels, are uniquely labelled with the integers [1..n-1]. To date, no proof or disproof of the conjecture has been found, but all trees with up to 28 vertices have been shown to be graceful. The conjecture also leads to a problem in algorithm design for efficiently finding graceful labellings for trees. In this thesis, a new graceful labelling algorithm is described and used to show that all trees on 29 vertices are graceful. A study is also made of statistical trends in the proportion of tree labellings that are graceful. These trends offer strong additional evidence that every tree is graceful.

Abstract:

Quivers (directed graphs) and species (a generalization of quivers) as well as their representations play a key role in many areas of mathematics including combinatorics, geometry, and algebra. Their importance is especially apparent in their applications to the representation theory of associative algebras, Lie algebras, and quantum groups. In this thesis, we discuss the most important results in the representation theory of species, such as Dlab and Ringel’s extension of Gabriel’s theorem, which classifies all species of finite and tame representation type. We also explain the link between species and K-species (where K is a field). Namely, we show that the category of K-species can be viewed as a subcategory of the category of species. Furthermore, we prove two results about the structure of the tensor ring of a species containing no oriented cycles that do not appear in the literature. Specifically, we prove that two such species have isomorphic tensor rings if and only if they are isomorphic as “crushed” species, and we show that if K is a perfect field, then the tensor algebra of a K-species tensored with the algebraic closure of K is isomorphic to, or Morita equivalent to, the path algebra of a quiver.

Abstract:

Denna studie utreder de motstridiga uppgifter som idag förekommer om Bo Hanssons mest framgångsrika album Sagan om Ringens reception i Sverige efter att den gavs ut december 1970. Dess genomslag har i dagens relativt knapphändiga receptionsmaterial beskrivits som en omedelbar succé men samtidigt som enbart måttlig. Studien innefattar huvudsakligen insamlade och granskade historiska primärkällor i form av dags- och kvällstidningsartiklar från Sveriges fyra största tidningar och styrs av en huvudfråga och en följande bifråga: I vilken omfattning omskrevs verket och hur formulerades receptionen i dåtidens svenska press? Bifrågan grundas i utsagor om en särställning som Bo Hansson idag anses ha erhållit jämte sin samtida sociokulturella kontext, nämligen sjuttiotalets svenska Musikrörelse även kallad Proggrörelsen. Studien föranleds av ett biografiskt bakgrundsavsnitt och avrundas med en kort biografisk epilog som syftar till att stärka läsarens helhetsförståelse av uppsatsens centrala artikelstudie. En summering med slutledningar och övriga iakttagelser presenteras i en avslutande diskussion som kan konstatera att det inte förelåg en omedelbar medial uppmärksamhet kring Sagan om Ringen i Sverige och att svensk press först började omskriva verket efter dess banbrytande internationella genomslag två år senare. Tecken på en viss konstnärlig särställning kring Bo Hansson framkommer i artikelstudien och exemplifieras ytterligare i slutdiskussionen.

Abstract:

Syftet med studien var att undersöka hur pedagogerna bemöter nyanlända föräldrar i förskolan med fokus på lämning- och hämtningssituationerna på en introduktionsavdelning för nyanlända. Vi hade tidigare erfarenheter från förskolan att de främsta möjligheterna för kommunikation ägde rum mellan pedagogerna och föräldrarna vid lämning och hämtning, därför fokuserade vi på dessa tillfällen och riktade in oss på kommunikation, kommunikativa strategier och inkludering. Vi valde att använda oss av följande frågeställning i vår studie: Hur kommunicerar pedagogerna med vårdnadshavarna vid lämning- och hämtningssituationerna? vilka typer av strategier och kommunikativa redskap används av pedagogerna i mötet med vårdnadshavarna? och hur bidrar pedagogerna till att föräldrarna inkluderas i verksamheten och får ta del i det som sker i barns vardagsliv på förskolan?Vårt empiriska material består av kvalitativa metoder såsom observationer och semistrukturerade intervjuer med fyra av pedagogerna. Studien utfördes på en introduktionsavdelning för nyanlända där vi samlade in materialet under två dagar.Vi har använt oss av relevant tidigare forskning och teorier såsom kommunikationsteori, multimodalitet och interkulturalitet då vi analyserat vårt material.Resultatet vi kom fram till var att de vardagliga rutinerna vid lämning och hämtning på avdelningen skiljde sig från många förskolor. Pedagogerna hade utvecklat olika strategier då de kombinerade det verbala med det visuella i kommunikationen med vårdnadshavarna, utifrån multimodala uttrycksformer såsom gester och kroppsspråk. Det var viktigt för personalen att skapa ett gott samarbete mellan hem och förskola. Pedagogerna på avdelningen hade därför hittat olika handlingssätt och taktiker för att kommunicera med föräldrarna trots den rådande språkbarriären. De inkluderade föräldrarna genom att ta del av deras kultur, planera olika arrangemang och bjuda in dem till förskolans verksamhet.

Abstract:

Gegenstand der vorliegenden Arbeit ist die templatgestützte Erzeugung metallischer Stäbchen und Ringstrukturen im Mikrometer- und Nanometerbereich. Derartige Strukturen besitzen vor allem aufgrund ihres außergewöhnlichen Verhaltes gegenüber elektromagnetischen Wellen ein hohes Potential für optische, elektronische, magnetische oder sensorische Anwendungen. Zunächst wird das Vorgehen zur Herstellung mesoskopischer Ringe durch die Infiltration von Kolloidkristallen aus Siliziumdioxid mittels geeigneter Präkursorlösungen detailliert betrachtet. Daraufhin werden Ansätze zur Optimierung einzelner Teilschritte vorgestellt. Im Anschluss erfolgt die Übertragung des Verfahrens auf die Herstellung von Goldringen. Neben der elektronenmikroskopischen Charakterisierung der Proben wird unter anderem durch energiedispersive Röntgenspektroskopie (EDXS), Elektronenrückstreubeugung (EBSD) und Röntgenphotoelektronenspektroskopie (XPS) bestätigt, dass die entstandenen Strukturen aus metallischem Gold bestehen. Ein weiterer Inhalt dieser Arbeit ist die Konzeption und Umsetzung einer Apparatur zur elektrochemischen Erzeugung von mesoskopischen Metallstäbchen im Inneren von porösen Aluminiumoxidmembranen. Im Anschluss wird die Herstellung von Silber- und Goldstäbchen beschrieben. Außerdem wird aufgeführt, wie die sequenzielle Abscheidung der beiden Metalle unter anschließender Auflösung des metallischen Silbers zur Erhöhung der Ausbeute an isolierten Goldstäbchen führt.

Abstract:

Interest in the mechanisms of homeo domain specificity led to a screen that identified Drosophila proteins able to bind a consensus homeo domain site. One clone isolated in this screen produced no homeo domain and was selected for further characterisation as a protein with an unknown DNA binding domain and the potential to interact with homeo domain proteins on the DNA. This thesis describes the characterisation of the Drosophila gene dead ringer ( dri ) corresponding to this clone. Isolation of overlapping cDNA clones and sequence analysis allowed the identification of a complete open reading frame in the dri message that gave a predicted protein of 901 amino acids. Database searches and multiple sequence alignment revealed a widely conserved motif in the Dri sequence that is found in proteins from organisms as diverse as yeast, nematodes, flies and humans. Biochemical analysis of the properties of this conserved motif revealed that it could function as a DNA binding domain when expressed in a fusion protein. The in vitro specificity of the Dri DNA binding domain was determined by selection and sequencing of target sites. The Dri consensus site obtained was strikingly similar to that of the Qfo class of homeo domains, although the sequence and predicted secondary structure of the Dri DNA binding domain do not resemble a homeo domain. Analysis of the developmental expression pattern of dri showed a ubiquitous maternal deposit gradually refined to localisation in the mesoderm at germ band extension, then further restriction to a diverse set of tissues including the salivary gland ducts, parts of the gut and a subset of the central nervous system. The phenotype of P - element insertion and deletion mutations of dri were identified as causing embryonic lethality preceded by a disruption of the hindgut and loss of Dri expression in the ring gland. The identification of the novel, conserved DNA - binding domain in Dead ringer offers an explanation for the regulatory activity of several important related proteins and presents an opportunity to use the advantages of the Drosophila model system to clarify the role of these proteins in transcriptional control.

Abstract:

Particles in Saturn’s main rings range in size from dust to even kilometer-sized objects. Their size distribution is thought to be a result of competing accretion and fragmentation processes. While growth is naturally limited in tidal environments, frequent collisions among these objects may contribute to both accretion and fragmentation. As ring particles are primarily made of water ice attractive surface forces like adhesion could significantly influence these processes, finally determining the resulting size distribution. Here, we derive analytic expressions for the specific self-energy Q and related specific break-up energy Q⋆ of aggregates. These expressions can be used for any aggregate type composed of monomeric constituents. We compare these expressions to numerical experiments where we create aggregates of various types including: regular packings like the face-centered cubic (fcc), Ballistic Particle Cluster Aggregates (BPCA), and modified BPCAs including e.g. different constituent size distributions. We show that accounting for attractive surface forces such as adhesion a simple approach is able to: a) generally account for the size dependence of the specific break-up energy for fragmentation to occur reported in the literature, namely the division into “strength” and “gravity” regimes, and b) estimate the maximum aggregate size in a collisional ensemble to be on the order of a few meters, consistent with the maximum aggregate size observed in Saturn’s rings of about 10m.
Die Ringe des Saturns bestehen aus Myriaden von Teilchen, deren Größe von Mikrometern (Staub) bis hin zu Hunderten von Metern reicht. Die Ringteilchen bestehen hauptsächlich aus Eis, wobei attraktive Oberflächenkräfte wie Adhäsion und Gravitation zur Bildung von Aggregaten führen kann. Das Wachstum der Aggregate wird durch die Wirkung der Gezeitenkräfte und auch durch Kollisionen der Ringteilchen untereinander auf natürliche Weise begrenzt. Die Kollisionen der Ringteilchen führen zu Akkretion und Fragmentation, welche die resultierende Größenverteilung der Agglomerate schließlich bestimmen. In dieser Arbeit wurden Ausdrücke für die spezifische Eigenenergie Q der Aggregate und der in Relation stehenden spezifischen Fragmentationsenergie Q* analytisch hergeleitet. Diese Ausdrücke können für alle aus monomeren Teilchen bestehenden Agglomerate verwendet werden. Die analytisch gewonnenen Ergebnisse wurden mit numerischen Experimenten verglichen. In den numerischen Experimenten wurden verschiedene Agglomerattypen erzeugt: (i) Agglomerate mit kubischem Kristallsystem, (ii) ballistische Teilchenaggregate und (iii) modifiziert ballistische Teilchenaggregate. Für die ballistischen Teilchenaggregate wurden verschiedene Größenverteilungen der Konstituenten verwendet. Als Ergebnis lassen sich die erzeugten Aggregate gemäß ihrer Größe in zwei Gruppen einteilen. Während die kleinen Aggregate hauptsächlich durch die Kontaktkräfte (Adhäsion) zusammengehalten werden, dominiert bei großen Aggregaten (größer als einige Meter) die Gravitationskraft. D.h. wächst aus kleinen Teilchen ein Aggregat, so wird dieses zunächst durch die haftenden Kontakte zwischen den Teilchen zusammengehalten. Wächst das Agglomerat über eine bestimmte Größe, so ist es die Eigengravitation, die den Körper zusammenhält. Damit kann die maximale Gesamtgröße der Aggregate im Kollisionsensemble abgeschätzt werden. Der so bestimmte Wert von einigen Metern stimmt mit der aus Beobachtungen berechneten maximalen Größe der Ringteilchen von rund 10 Metern gut überein.

In this paper, we present results concerning gluing of ringed spaces and its applications to Schemes, following [5]. Our principal result about ringed spaces is theorem 2.1: Theorem Assume W is a ringed space and also that for each i ∈ I there exists maps. In the end, we use this last result to construct an scheme without closed points. Another construction is given using valuation rings.

Abstract:

Ringed seal (Phoca hispida) is a major component and a major source of mercury (Hg) in the Inuit traditional diet. A high correlation between Hg and selenium (Se), as different forms of Hg-Se complex, has been reported in many species of marine mammals. The chemical form of the Hg-Se complex in ringed seals has never be characterised. In this study, Hg and Se concentrations in different seal tissues: liver, kidney, muscle and brain, were measured. The highest Hg and Se concentrations were found in the liver and a strong linear correlation was also observed between Hg and Se concentration in the seal liver. Extensive chromatographic and mass spectrometry techniques have been used to isolate and characterize the Hg and Se ligands in seal liver. Extraction of Hg and Se showed that Hg and Se were bound to ligands within the cell membranes of ringed seal liver. The Hg/Se binding protein has a MW range of about 65 kDa and Hg and Se had a 1:1 molecular ratio. The Hg/Se binding protein may contain 3 major polypeptides with MW of 6510.8, 14305.1 and 14353.1 Da. The toxicology of this Hg/Se binding protein will be studied using an animal feeding experiment.

Religion ist für viele Menschen ein wichtiger Bestandteil ihres Seins. Sie identifizieren und definieren sich über ihre Zugehörigkeit zu dieser. Jede konkurrierende Weltanschauung wird dabei meist als Bedrohung angesehen und mehr oder weniger stark in Wort, Schrift oder Tat bekämpft. Besonders die Auseinandersetzung mit dem Islam hat sich in den letzten Jahren drastisch verschärft und führt immer wieder zu heftigen verbalen oder gewalttätigen Angriffen. Das Ringen um Verständigung bzw. Abgrenzung und die damit verbundenen Konflikte und Diskussionen sind jedoch nicht neu, sondern ziehen sich wie ein roter Faden durch die Geschichte. Interessant aus heutiger Zeit ist deshalb die Erschließung der Anfangsdebatte am Entstehungsort des Islams. Auf welche Weise und mit welchen Mitteln setzten sich die unmittelbar von der arabischen Herrschaft betroffenen Christen mit der neuen Religion auseinander? Wie entwickelten sich die Argumentationsmuster in den Anfängen des Religionsdiskurses? Welche hauptsächlichen religiösen Unterschiede wurden wahrgenommen und thematisiert? Anhand einiger Texte des Johannes Damaskenos und des Theodor Abū Qurra soll diesen Fragen auf den Grund gegangen werden

Particularly the discussion with Islam has drastically intensified during the last years and leads over and over again to fierce verbal or violent attacks. Nevertheless, the struggle around notification or demarcation and the conflicts linked with it and discussions are not new, but stretch like a red thread through the history. Therefore, interesting from today's time is the development of the beginning debate in the place of origin of Islam. In which manner and with which means did the Christians immediately affected by the Arabian rule argue with the new religion? How did the argumentation patterns develop in the beginnings of the religious discourse? Which principal religious differences were perceived and picked out as a central theme? With the help of some texts of Johannes Damaskenos and Theodor Abū Qurra should become to these questions on the reason gone
