Abstract:
In the battle for minds and hearts of young Muslims in Eastern Anatolia, the Risale-i Nur movement inspired by the writings of Said Nursi may prove to be the most effective peace-oriented alternative to the xenophobic teachings of isis. As the most influential Muslim thinker in Turkey in the 20th Century, Nursi still attracts the attention and loyalty of great number of Turks and Kurds. Nursi was one of the earliest to call for Muslim-Christian cooperation in the struggle against ignorance, poverty, and disunity. His message of peace and dialogue offer a sound foundation for both ethnic tolerance and interreligious harmony.

Abstract:
Bediuzzaman Said Nursi addressed many issues on the Muslim way of life in his famous tafsīr, Risale-I Nur. The discussion and commentaries in this tafsīr, which were written during the 1910s and 1950, are still relevant to many present-day issues. This study aims to seek out his opinions on women’s issues as well as his reasoning behind the commandments of the Qur’ān and Sunnah related to them. This study will focus on the chapters and the sub-chapters in Risale-I Nur and their commentaries on women’s issues and proposed solutions. This qualitative study utilizes the deductive and inductive methods, as all of the selected commentaries will be examined and categorised accordingly to the corresponding issue. The result indicates that there are several women’s issues discussed in Risale-I Nur, as well as Bediuzzaman Said Nursi advices on how to utilize women’s potential appropriately.

Abstract:
Islam meaning peace becomes an important point in the discussion of inner peace; Muslims believe the religion of Islam is a source of inner peace for them, citing various Qur’ānic verses and ḥadīth in support of this notion. Furthermore, tasawwuf (Islamic mysticism) is rich with discussion of concepts relating to inner peace, such as riḍā (contentment), sakīna (serenity) and iṭmīnān (peacefulness). This further strengthens the idea that inner peace is part and parcel of Islam. However, when Islamic literature is reviewed, very little is found on the topic of inner peace. Based on the approach of Said Nursi (d. 1960), a twentieth century Islamic scholar, I would argue that the little information found on inner peace can be attributed to a consensual assumption among Muslims scholars that one who has belief has inner peace; that is, inner peace is a default state for one who believes. According to Nursi, the intellectual and spiritual decline within the Muslim world in the twentieth century has shaken belief, so certain states and specific beliefs can no longer be assumed to be inherent in a believer; inner peace as a state and belief in the hereafter as a specifi belief would be prime examples. This awareness becomes Nursi’s driving force in his writings; the Risale-i Nur (Treatise of Light), a commentary of the Qur’ān. This puts Nursi in a unique position, where seeks to convincingly argue and thus establish the foundational beliefs and states which are necessary for a prosperous life and after life for a believer. Specific to this thesis his emphasis on the notion Islam gives its adherents inner peace. Thus the objective of this thesis is to draw out Nursi’s understanding of how one attains inner peace though Islam. However, the description of inner peace is not so simple and necessitates formulating based on inductive research of the Risale-i Nur. Through the research, it becomes apparent that inner peace is a process, according to Nursi, a process that has three phases. The process commences with belief and knowledge of God with great emphasis on the names of God while still remaining focused on the oneness of God (tawḥīd). This is followed by x knowledge of one’s self, which feeds back to knowing God, since knowing the self means knowing God. But it also becomes the starting point to understanding how to best use the self for optimal outcomes. The final part of the process is the tawḥīd-centric worldview one should have, particularly in relation to suffering and calamities. The previous two steps (knowing God and knowing one’s self) become the building blocks to construct the worldview. It is a cyclic process so the worldview further enhances belief and knowledge of God, and so the cycle continues spiralling upwards. Based on this process, inner peace is attained when the world is decoded through the names of God, so life and events can be given meaning in a way that satisfies the heart and mind. More briefly, it is giving life and events a tawḥīd-centric meaning. If this is the definition of inner peace according to the Risale-i Nur, then Nursi become the lived example of inner peace. While one is the theory, the other is the practise.

Kuru, Omer. "Self in relation to the concept of God in Risale-i Nur." Thesis, Durham University, 2016. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/11587/.

Abstract:
This thesis presents a critical analysis on the self in relation to the concept of God in writings and discourse of Bediuzzaman Said Nursi. He has lived between 1876-1960 as not only a religious scholar but also as an activist in Turkey. Another particular importance of this study is that Nursi’s ideas about the self in relation to the concept of God have been discussed together with mainstream western and Islamic thoughts. For Bediuzzaman Said Nursi a true understanding of the concept of self is essential to fulfil the true potential as an individual. Dynamic and ever changing structure of the self can be understood by anā which is a subjective tool acting as a unit of measure. In other words it is just an image (anā) on the mirror (nafs), which reflects and shows the Divine Names and Attributes. However if anā and nafs are not guided by Divine Revelation and Sunnah, they can easily claim to be the source and owner of what is reflected on the mirror. Bediuzzaman Said Nursi has a completely different understanding of the universe and the concept of self, compared to many of the western philosophers and thinkers. For him it is important to grasp the reality of things which may ultimately lead to a better understanding of the Divine (m‘arifah). And grasping the reality of things is only possible if one can obtain a stand point to reach out to the meaning of things in a domain not limited to his benefit only. According to him this is possible through a proper understanding of the concepts like nafs and anā.

Abstract:
Theology is a rational endeavour to understand everything about God, from within a faith tradition and its scriptures, and in response to problems posed by the conditions of a particular time and place. Islamic theology, in particular, has been a reactive discipline. Bediuzzaman Said Nursi (1876-1960), as a prominent scholar in the modern era, lived through a tumultuous period witnessing the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the emergence of secular nation states for the first time in Muslim history, two world wars, and the challenges imposed by European modernity on traditional Muslim societies and Islam. Unlike other revivalist leaders, in dealing with the complexity of circumstances and the social and political restrictions around him, Nursi chose to respond following a theological revival method, where he attempted to revive Islam by renewing faith in people through his theological writings. By loading so much significance and revivalist objectives to theology, Nursi produced an original and fresh expression of Islamic theology based on the Qur’an. In this thesis, my original contribution to knowledge is the critical evaluation of Nursi’s writings about God and identification of his contributions to Islamic understanding of God and tawḥīd as the central doctrine of Islam.

Abstract:
Modernist exegesis emerged under the influence of Western science in various parts of Muslim lands such as India and Egypt in the mid-nineteenth century. Key figures of this modernist exegesis include Sayyid Ahmad Khan (d. 1898) and Muhammad ʿAbduh (d. 1905). A number of influential Muslim scholars also appeared in many parts of the Muslim world in the modern period. Bediuzzaman Said Nursi (1877-1960) was a Muslim thinker and great scholar from Turkey in the twentieth century. This research project aims to analyse the methodology of Said Nursi‘s Qur‘anic exegesis with special reference to the views of the early Muslim modernist intellectuals. It particularly focuses on Nursi‘s usūl al-tafsīr book, Muhākamat (The Reasonings), and his one-volume commentary, Ishārāt al-Iʿjāz (Signs of Inimitability). This research explores the difference between Nursi‘s reading of the Qur‘an and that of his counterparts who follow both classical and modern approaches. Does he offer a new reading differing from others or does he follow very well-established exegetical traditions? Where does Nursi stand in relation to various modern Muslim scholarship on the Qur‘an?

Yesilhark, Tubanur. "Theodicy and the problem of evil in Islam : the Risale-i Nur as case study." Thesis, Durham University, 2013. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/9416/.

Full text
Abstract:
The thesis at hand presents a critical analysis of the writings of the contemporary, 20th century Muslim scholar, theologian and exegete Said Nursi (1876-1960) of Turkey. Special reference is given in this thesis to his views and writings on theodicy and the problem of evil from the perspective of Islām. This thesis is an attempt to discover the Qur'anic narrative of evil (sharr) as deviating from the human perception of evil in this world; to analyze Nursi's magnum opus on the definition of sharr and its correspondence to the Qur'anic definition thereof; and to challenge Nursi's works with the thoughts and views of his predecessors and contemporaries in order to try to filter new insights and offer possible solutions to theodicy and the problem of evil through Nursi's Risale-i Nur Collection. The methodology that has been used in this study follows Izutsu's example as seen in Ethico-Religious Concepts of the Qur'an and God and Man in the Koran: namely to conduct an inductive investigation of the term sharr in the Qur'ān and Nursi's Risale-i Nur Collection. There are several issues that can be considered to be the main findings of this study: 1) human perception of evil in this world to a great extent at odds with the Qur'anic definition of sharr, 2) new theological concept called 'negative worship', establishing a relation between sharr and worship, 3) relationship between theodicy and the Divine Names of God, 4) link between the human 'I' (ana) and, if misused, its encouragement for all kinds of ashrār (pl. sharr), 5) original interpretation to the Qur'anic verse [2:30], 6) sharr, ana and free choice (juz'ī ikhtiyār) consist of the same nature and finally 7) suffering of on-human beings part of the field of theodicy.
