Abstract:
Occupational health surveillance programs are designed to evaluate and reduce injury, illness, and deaths related to workplace hazards. In the state of Florida, there are numerous industries where workers are potentially exposed to airborne hazards from gases, vapors and dusts. Airborne occupational exposures to irritants, vesicants, and fibrogens have the potential to cause pulmonary function impairment if exposures are not properly controlled for high-level acute exposure as well as chronic exposure. For occupations that demand workers be exposed to substances known to be associated with pul

The occupational health and safety (OHS) risks encountered by health workers (HCWs) in hospitals are significant. A hospital workplace is rife with numerous occupational hazards, yet hazard exposure does not occur uniformly to all HCWs because these hazards are diverse, with multiple interacting risk determinants. Many attempts have been made to identify and minimise the risk of hazard exposure individually; however an integrative approach to address such complex and interconnected determinants has rarely been considered in strategy development. A cohort study was conducted in Montreal (1988--1992) to test whether working in home care as a home maker entails a higher risk of developing low back pain than working in long term care hospitals as a nursing aide; and to investigate which risk factors may contribute to low back pain. Data from 978 self-administered questionnaires were analysed. Home makers suffered more than nursing aides from low back pain attributed to work. The adjusted odds ratios for home makers were: 1.63 (95% CI = 1.03--2.58) for a first episode of low back pain during 1998--1992, 2.43 (95% CI = 1.05--5.60) for disab

Abstract:
Previous research has shown a social gradient in health that suggests that better health is found for people in more advantaged positions in society. This research has mainly been focused on the relationship between social position in childhood and health or current position and health. However, little is known about the impact of positions held in between these two time-points. In this paper a potentially lasting health effect of occupational class positions is explored. The study starts with a description of the work-life biographies for people in different current class positions. Then goes
