Full textAccording to European food legislation, meat inspection should be based on risk analysis, covering the entire food chain. Predictive modelling of post mortem abnormalities at slaughter, using primary production information, could help to make risk-based decisions on appropriate meat inspection procedures. A field study was conducted to investigate the broiler chickens condemnation process, determining condemnation prevalence and reasons, existence of risk markers, and feasibility of screening flocks upon these markers to anticipate the risk of condemnation at meat inspection. This study has revealed the large variability of the condemnation rate, which could not be accurately predicted. It has pinpointed the multifactorial nature of condemnation process, which depends on previous stages of the chicken production. The influential stages and factors identified could help to develop decision-support tools for Veterinary services. Notably, reading and interpretation rules of food chain information were proposed, to formalize its use for meat inspection purposes

Full textSince the catastrophe of Fukushima, a nuclear accident has become more imaginable since it is said to be “possible” according to the authorities, or even inevitable, in Europe, according to some experts. In France, the majority of people lives within 200 km of a nuclear power plant (more than 9 million around the Nogent/Seine Nuclear Plant within 100 km). This is why the authorities in France have been studying the post-accident problem well before this accident (Doctrine). However, in order to be able to get an idea of the world that could result from it, it is necessary -before- to have a certain information on what is going on about the pollutant releases and the taking of water, in the environment, in routine time (including the cumulative effects). The chosen perspective is not that of an accusation of a lack of transparency (the myth of transparency is also denounced), but that of giving oneself the means of reasoning to have this “vigilance” so much pushed forward in Texts or Speeches, but which is rarely accompanied by positive elements concerning people’s lives. Our thesis is based on the fact that a strong belief in the absence of risk in France based on trust is not the solution and that it is necessary to look for gripping elements on our environment, because we are disconnected from our milieu. Based on an ethnological survey as a member of a local information commission and, on the one hand, on the Mesology(The Poetics of the Earth by Augustin Berque) and, on the other hand, on the Theory of the Empowerment and the Sociological Balistics of Francis Chateauraynaud, we propose an approach, first draft of a guide, from questions-object-of-the-control-over-our-environment which concern all of us

The general objective of this thesis is to identify innovative ways to promote healthy eating, that is fruit and vegetable consumption, among women at risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus. Intervention Mapping was used to guide the development of the intervention. To achieve the thesis’ goal, four distinct, but complementary research projects were conducted. The first research project was a systematic review on the validation of self-reported measures of foods and nutrients in pregnancy. The objective of this review was to identify self-reported measures assessing diet during pregnancy and to critically appraise their psychometric qualities in order to identify which tools should preferably be used among pregnant women. The objective of the second research project was to validate a brief questionnaire on fruit and vegetable consumption among pregnant women. The third project was a formative research whose objective was to develop the content of a questionnaire using implementation intentions to encourage fruit and vegetable intake in women at risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus. The objective of the fourth research project was to test the efficacy of an implementation intentions intervention compared to a control group based on the question-behavior effect to promote fruit and vegetable consumption among childbearing age (18 to 44 years) women at risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus. Implementation intentions and the question-behavior effect were effective techniques to increase vegetable consumption among childbearing age women at risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus. This result suggests that these two techniques can be used to promote healthy eating before the onset of pregnancy to lower risks of developing gestational diabetes mellitus or type 2 diabetes and thus favor the health of the woman and her child. In sum, the thesis’ four research projects allowed the development of an intervention which used a validated tool to measure fruit and vegetable intake, which addressed the target population’s needs and that was effective in promoting healthy eating among women at risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus.

Full textIn the French national context of re-assessing coastal risk management, it seems necessary to study the pe rception of coastal flood risk by inhabitants in order to improve the understanding of their judgments and attitudes towards preventive policies. Based on an interdisciplinary approach that combines the contributions of social and environmental psychology to the geography of risks, we propose an analysis of the perception of coastal flood risk of the inhabitants of four French coastal communities exposed to this risk (Barneville-Carteret, Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, Châtelaillon- Plage and Sainte-Anne in Guadeloupe). A survey, which combines questionnaires and sketch maps, was conducted among 318 inhabitants. The survey data was processed by bivariate and multivariate statistical methods. The sketch maps were digitized in a GIS and geoprocessed. We highligh t a tendency of participants to underestimate the risk exposure of their homes and the extent of the exposed areas at the municipal level. We propose to explain this trend by factors related to risk knowledge, risk experience, home location, residential and socio-demographic profile

Full textAbstract: Pesticides reduce yield losses but have negative environmental consequences. It is important to provide precise information on the epidemic risks concerning harmful organisms in order to reason the use of pesticides, in particular in the case of grape downy mildew, which is responsible on average for 43% of pesticides used in Bordeaux vineyards. The objective of this work is to estimate the benefits of using downy mildew onset date to avoid unjustified sprays in the control of this disease. Based on regional observations and local expertise, we show that in Bordeaux, the first treatments are applied on average four weeks before the first symptoms appear. We show that postponing the date of the first downy mildew spray to disease onset reduces fungicide use by an average of 56% compared to current practices in this region. For operators, our results show that combining this strategy with the use of personal protective equipment reduces exposure by more than 70%.By using machine learning methods, we also show that the precocity and severity of downy mildew epidemics are strongly linked. Our predictions can be used to trigger disease treatments only in high-risk cases, resulting in a reduction of more than 50% in mildew treatments compared to current practices. Our results and the used methods are discussed and compared with other methods for reducing the use of pesticides in viticulture

Full textThe concerning increase in the incidence of overweight and obesity has triggered a cascade of preventive programs focused on health, including targeting eating behaviours. Moreover, despite the many efforts made in this regard, there seem to be still some limitations to the adoption of these behaviours and that is why some researchers are addressing this problem by proposing alternative prevention strategies at the population level. Currently, health communication proposes the use of different messages that can be more or less understood and adopted by the entire population. Under our social backdrop of productivity, food being omnipresent, and choices seem to be dictated by the desires of society, it would seem that proposing empowering messages holds promise for the adoption of sustainable healthy behaviours. In particular, messages focused on the dimensions of pleasure would allow us to better liberate our food identity. The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the relevance of a message promoting healthy eating habits, oriented towards the pleasure of eating healthy. Moreover, the objective of this paper is to compare food choices and the reasons and emotions associated with these choices between the different groups studied, i.e. a group receiving a message focused on pleasure, a group receiving a message focused on health and a control group, without a message. The results show no difference in healthy choices according to the message received. In addition, for individuals with low eating habits, either a pleasure- or a health-oriented message tend to lead to healthier food choices compared to individuals who do not receive any messages. The results of this thesis provide an innovative approach to the promotion of healthy eating and provide a better focus for future research that combines pleasure and health.
