Full textThis ethnography aims to analyze the journey of fragment of indigenous rituals – toré, praiá and shamanic cure – in Brazil Nordeste. It is based on a fieldwork carried between 2010 and 2015 within the Pankararé (State of Bahia) and the Panakaru (State of Pernambuco) indigenous people. The main objective of this dissertation is to illustrate the regional process of rituals’ convergence by studying the transmission between those two populations. The hypothesis at the core of this work is that these transmissions lead to a triple populating process. 1) The first one is a regional and ethnical process: the learning and performance of the toré rituals allows for population considered as caboclas and denigrated for the absence of exterior symbols of their indianness to obtain the legal status differentiating and ameliorating the situation for “indigenous populations”. (2) Those learnings consist in the transmission of techniques establishing contacts with local invisible entity, constitutive of rituals actions. Pankararé’s, as receptive populations, discover through those practices a pantheon of local entity legitimizing the personalization of their ritual practices. This constitutes a second realm of populating process, a cosmic populating. (3) Within the issuing population, those interethnic transmissions of rituals results in a relations’ liberalization with the invisible world, provoking a significant multiplication of its inhabitant. New categories of entity are progressively integrated, posses rituals mask and are called upon in collective and domestic rituals. The description of these three forms of populating process allows for the analysis of the motives and the condition behind interethnic rituals transmissions, of their acceptations, success, but also outcomes and innovations

Full textThis dissertation is an ethnographic study of the previously unstudied Katukina of the Katukina linguistic family (not to be confused with the Katukina of the Panoan linguistic family). They live in western Brazil, on the rio Biá, a tributary of the Jutai and Solimões rivers. Apart from its monographic ambition, this study aims to deal with the specific ways in which the Katukina have reacted to historical events, in particular how they have been led to recategorize neighbouring groups, interpersonal relationships, and proper ways to deal with the spirit world. Two main polysemic concepts seem to govern this system. The first, -wara, is associated with bodies, leadership and inclusiveness. The second, -wayan, is related to kinship, similarity, complementarity and fluidity. The Katukina have been in regular contact with Brazilian society for an unsuspectedly great number of years, as shown by their attitudes towards concepts such as “work” or “commodities”. They also display great similarity with their Kanamari neighbours (also of the Katukina linguistic family). This dissertation attempts to systematically compare both groups and redefine the complexity of their mutual relations

Full textThe present work deals with the production and circulation of song books among the Ye'kuana. Today, the socio-spatial mobility of this Karib group plays at different levels. It is the result of a historical relationship with Venezuela, where the majority of the Ye'kuana live, as well as of intense exchanges with other Karib and Arawak Amerindian populations of Roraima. At the local level, in the village of Fuduuwadunha on the Auaris River where field research was conducted, it is the mobility of proximity that is in play. Song books are objects the Ye'kuana take good care of. Their modes of transmission alone, however, cannot fully explain how the song contained therein are passed on. Being able to sing the songs requires a foregone learniong process between master and apprentice. Their relationship must lead to changes in the body, thereby creating the conditions necessary to memorize lyrics and rhythm. Despite the artifice of the books the memory of songs is constantly threatened by the predatory acts of enemies, who also seek to transform the bodies of their victims. For this reason, to take care of bodies, to artialize them, must be a task not only for shamans and singers, but also the whole family group. Though wishing for a life without conflict or illness, the Ye'kuana know they cannot avoid war against Odosha: that is why they perpetuate revenge. Understanding the production and circulation of song books is therefore not simply a matter of memorization techniques or opposition between oral and written, but also one of the registers of bodies, and of predation

Full textThis thesis is the result of a long time and path of religious and academic experience. The searchfield is Alagoas, since its days as a colony of Portugal to today. To reflect on the historical-religiousprocess called Popular Christianity, we took as a general object of research analyzing the symbolicpractices of faith in the myths, rites and preaching present in Popular Religiosity and itspermanence in Alagoas, covering the centuries XVI - XX. In this perspective, the objects workedin this research were the many symbolic and discursive artifacts that testify to this religiosity(documents, reports, surveys, interviews, etc.) from its European and medieval roots, until havingincorporated religious elements of indigenous and African cultures, present and alive in the stateof Alagoas. If predominantly syncretic without the official / actual control of the episcopalhierarchy, suffering the pressure of the movement of "Romanization" of the Christian faith, theeffects of so-called Brazilian Moreno Christianity will have produced favorable or unfavorableresults for the perception of missionaries and faithful of the backlands of Alagoas? Of course, syncretism is not a simple observable datum but a complex sociocultural process. In general, themethodology used to develop this work was carried out through literature review of theoreticalframeworks that study the Popular Religiosity, accompanied by documentary research in thecollection of the Historical and Geographical Institute of the State of Alagoas, in the Library ofTheo Museum Brandão and parish files; data generation and confrontation of representations ofthese discourses from the field interviews analysis, conducted on ranches and farms, on the“quilombola” and indigenous communities, where some groups of believers still experience thepopular religious practices. Therefore, these plots of mixed realities and mysteries were involvedwith enchantment and rich religious imaginary, to finally form the so-called alagoana popularreligiosity
Terre Indigène Trincheira Bacajá (T.I.T.B, Pará, Brésil)." Thesis, Paris Sciences et Lettres (ComUE), 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018PSLEH032/document.
Full textThe Mebengôkré-Xikrin of the Trincheira Bacajá Indigenous Land (Pará, Brazil) have recently undergone unprecedented political, economic and ecological transformations. These are caused, among other things, by the establishment of the Belo Monte hydroelectric dam and by the compensation projects that accompany it. Among the impacts, the reduction of the hydric regime of their Bacajá river, resulting in an erosion of thebiodiversity and an infringement of their mobility and autonomy in their relationship to the Others. In this context, this thesis aims to analyse how the Xikrin conceive and practice their territoriality as they assert themselves and reproduce as Mebengôkré, and this, in a historical depth allowed by the literature and the speeches of the Ancients. At the crossroads between social anthropology and anthropology of the environment, this research is a continuation of recent work on socio-spatiality that has begun a revision of the idea of closure attributed to the Jê societies and to the Mebengôkré in particular. The hypothesis is that the conceptions and practices of the space lived by the Xikrin are guided by the relation to the Other: the Kuben (the Whites), the Mẽkarõ (the dead) and the animals and plants populating the extra and intra villagers. The thesis is structured according to a three-scale analysis, from the widest to the narrowest: from the region between Central Brazil and the Volta Grande do Xingu to the village, passing through the explored places of the Trincheira Bacajá Indigenous Land. The proposed analysis permits to understand how the Xikrin emerged as a collective apart from the other Mebengôkré, by appropriating the space that today constitutes their territory, in their migration and dispersion through the successive splits since their settlement. This thesis finally shows that the Xikrin, originated from a savanna ecosystem, have not only developed a singular relationship with the city but also with the forest and the rivers of a tropical region. Thus, the conclusions put into question the concentric dual representation of the Xikrin socio-spatiality, allowing to consider the extra villagers spaces and their inhabitants not as simply asocial and potentially socializable but, on the contrary, as being socializing, that is to say also having a role in the (re)production of Mebengôkré people and Xikrin sociality, in particular by learning and appropriating elements of these spaces
