Full textFrom research undertaken in north Togo, the author suggests that funeral rites are the collective response to the phenomenon of death. This response, expressed in ceremonies, dance, song, mythology, creates an experience which enables the population to face death, while minimising its import. Although the research tends towards a wide perspective, borrowing from the views of w. Dilthey, the author also analyses the structures of symbols and thought. He shows that in the funeral rites, we can see how the people perceive death and how they live with it. The first section deals with the meaning of death (omens, risks, mythology) and places the funeral rites in their socio-cultural context. The second section analyses the funeral rites as a response to the pollution of death and as an effective means for helping the dead to pass to the hereafter. The third part (death dramatised) deals with the emotional and esthetic aspect of the rites : social drama, dramatic illusion and "metatheatre" of everyday life

Full textThe study of the ritual practices of the african traditional milieu in general with particular reference to the Pedah of Anyron-Kope located in southern Togo. The thesis tries to shed light on the initiation rites as performed by the people in the south of Togo known as the Pedah. The study is essentially in three parts: the first part introduces the area of research namely Anyron-Kope with its geographical, historical backround as well as the organisation of the family, cosmogony, beliefs and religious practices. The second part devotes itself to the description of the life cycle of the woman, marriage, married life, pregnancy, childbirth, name-giving, initiation rites and upbringing. The last part deals with funeral rites consisting of preburial ceremonies, preparation for burial, burial itself as well as burial ceremonies. The study undertaken, by its title, description and analysis, illuminates for us the traditional practices of the Pedah and, on a socio-cultural level, provides us with salient points of reference concerning this community in southern Togo. The thesis is therefore the fruit of our concern to shed light on the great cultural wealth and the mystery of the practices and values involved in forming members of the Pedah society

Full textThe importance and uniqueness of the ritual roles out by the impersonator of the deceased Nawda (North Togo) invites us to re-examine the notions of griel and of becoming an ancestor, from the perspective of this actor. Following in the footsteps of the impersonator of a deceased male - who will in turn be mimicked or mimed by a female actress - allows those present to, at the same time, observe the intertwining of the destinies of a male and female Nawda, submerge in the sameinstitution : that of matrimony. Within the time frame and the particular scenes of conjuring up the ancestors, as enacted by the performer, the participants in the grieving process can observe a veritable meltingof boundaries and of identities (that is, between man and woman: between the living and the dead; friends and family) leading to their dissolution and the transcendance of them. The attentive observation of the nuances of the impersonations (of wich we are engaged in the discovering the symbolic logic) leads us rethink a number of the classic questions of Anthropology, such as: the disctinction between sexes ; the realm of the ancestors and of the individual ; the relation between ritual an theatre ; plus the questions of the significance of the body and the space around it : and from a broader perspective, the links with the surrounding territories. The manuscript is accompanied by an assemblage of film material

Full textThe fantasy coffins are sarcophagi used during funerals primarily by the Ga people, who live in Accra, in the south of Ghana. They started to be used on a large scale at the beginning of the sixties. Two main factors contributed to the rapid circulation of these artifacts abroad: they were proposed as ready-made artworks in international exhibitions and they caught the interest of the mass-media. The research deals with a social scenario traversed by flows of moving people and goods, within a different configuration of concepts of space and time, a scenario produced by the complex network negotiations of social agents. From a theoretical point of view the object has been studied in relation to its social biography, whereas its production, use and circulation have been considered as a social act, that is to say as something that incorporates processes and has powerful cognitive effects on consumers, and therefore on the development of the social structure
