Abstract:
“Safety is an opportunity for people to open their minds” -Jin Baek, 2008 For my thesis I will design an education facility. That education facility will strive to meet with today's security needs and will provide a safe-feeling place for growth. In identifying the problem, I found two main causes for the described conditions in today's schools. They are improper adaptation and uniform building type. Improper adaptation has to do with surface applications, rather than integrating with the social fabric of the school's communal requirements. Unfortunate incidents have caused the solutions to heightened security around schools to be fortressing and disrupting to the human activities. Metal detectors, restricted areas and alarmed doors are some of the possibly necessary but often overlooked attributes of the school design, which in concentration create a trapping, prison-like feeling where they should suggest a place of voluntary education and inspiration for the future. I will utilize CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design) strategies, research codes, new building technologies, materials, systems, arrangements, precedent studies, and testing through simulation or experiment, in a form of installation. I can determine possible solutions and interventions using these resources. Uniform building type sets a counterproductive precedent. Today we must look at places were young people want to be, and splice the desired attributes of those places in to modern schools. In fact, uniform building type is one of the reasons for improper adaptation. Through interviewing school administrators, building officials, students, faculty, psychologists, builders and other construction professionals, I can identify the mandatory requirements. Implementing security and safety attributes as part of the concept, and knowing trends in technology can help secure educational facilities while still maintaining the qualities that are conducive to a learning environment. As stated by Holly Richmond in Contract magazine, February 2006 edition, "Students are the most crucial design element in today's schools," says Kerry Leonard, principal and senior planner at O'Donnell, Wicklund, Pigozzi and Peterson Architects in Chicago and chair of the advisory group for the AIA Committee on Architecture for Education. "Understanding how people learn and creating environments that respond to this knowledge is the best building block to start from."

Abstract:
The focus of this study is the design of a public open space on the Mutha River corridor at Pune in India. Like any other river in India, the Mutha River has religious significance to the region. The river has influenced the location and development of the city and featured prominently in the history of the region. Most of the historic heritage values of the city are along the river and are located in the study area. Though the river has been abused by damming of the catchment, removal of vegetation for urbanization, polluted by human and industrial waste and channelization, it still provides opportunities to be developed as a recreational resource. Insights from a study of water bodies in Canberra, Australia, where the design of the water bodies for urban recreation encompass ideas of sustainable design, combined with an appreciation of the heritage of Indian design, are used for the river corridor development at Pune. The proposed development of the river corridor to include parkland is designed to provide a recreational open space for the community as well as improve the overall health and management of the Mutha River corridor. The proposal will also try and achieve long-term sustainability of the river. The design considers hydrological, morphological, ecological, water quality, aesthetic, vegetation, recreation and cultural issues. A more naturalistic channel as an alternative to a hard engineering solution is proposed. It provides protection from flood and erosion hazards, addresses social concerns like environment and health, and provides a more attractive landscape in the high-density section of the city

Abstract:
The research programme was relevant to urban planning and in particular to the design of stormwater management schemes that are more environmentally and socially acceptable. It examined social and perception issues relating to stormwater management techniques within residential areas, and in particular to the application of SUDS, mainly ponds, and river management schemes. The thesis arose from a project funded by the Environment Agency of England and Wales through SNIFFER under a programme titled “Social impacts o f stormwater management techniques including river management and SUDS”, SNIFFER Code: SUDS01. The public perception of construction is becoming a matter of increasing importance both in the UK and internationally since socio-economic parameters and public consultation both have to be taken into consideration in the planning and implementation of relevant projects. This research programme endeavoured to match the relevant legislative goals with society’s actual needs. The main aims of the research programme were to obtain an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the perceptions of popular stormwater management practices (SUDS and river management), and to evaluate these techniques from a social perspective. To satisfy these aims the following objectives were set: • To assess public awareness and perceptions of SUDS (particularly retention ponds) in the UK; • To assess professional perceptions of SUDS in the UK; • To assess perceptions of different stormwater management techniques, in three European cities; • To compare perceptions of different stormwater management techniques, SUDS and river management practices; • To link the research findings with trends in perceptions of nature and water. To meet the programme’s aims and to satisfy the objectives, the perceptions of SUDS in the UK (principally ponds) were investigated over a wide range of locations. In addition, the different river management approaches used in three heavily urbanised European cities, Glasgow, London, and Athens were investigated. The results of this research programme provide a means to understand perceptions of stormwater management and to appreciate what types of schemes will be more readily accepted by the public. The research has shown that members of the public hold strong views as to what they like or dislike about SUDS and water management installations in their local area, in spite of the fact that there were demonstrably low levels of public awareness of SUDS. The amenity, recreational value and aesthetics of new schemes seem to be of major importance for public acceptability, while function, efficiency, and maintenance are primarily important in areas facing flooding problems. Other key findings include the fact that there is a general preference for sustainable urban water management and for river restoration schemes compared with more conventional, ‘hard engineering’ approaches, such as culverting of rivers. This preference was expressed both by members of the public and by professionals involved in their planning and implementation. Another important result was that although unfamiliarity can produce negativity, education can influence attitudes positively even in sensitive issues such as safety, and can be used by authorities and planners as a means of enhancing the acceptability of new schemes. Consequently, the results of the surveys can be used as arguments towards the application of informative campaigns which should be taken into account prior to scheme implementation. This information can be utilised not only for stormwater management design, but also for other environmentally friendly constructions which the public may have a low level of awareness. Recommendations are made with respect to public and professional attitudes for improving the public acceptability of new and modified stormwater management systems. Recommendations and barriers to the uptake outlined in this thesis mainly refer to the appearance of schemes rather than technical issues. They are therefore of most use as guidance for improving aesthetics and increasing public acceptability. The outcomes of this research will be of use to policy makers, water companies, local authorities, environment agencies, planners, developers, consultants active in urban development, and researchers in applying wider-accepted practices for the assessment of public perception. Some findings from this research have been presented at several stakeholders’ meetings, at 4 conferences, and are published in the form of papers and reports, including the DTI SR 622 report titled “An Assessment of the Social Impacts of Sustainable Drainage Systems in the UK”, and the Environment Agency & SNIFFER report, SUDS01, 2005, titled “Social Impacts of stormwater management techniques including river management and SUDS”. This publication also constitutes Environment Agency R&D Technical report P2-258.

Abstract:
The goal of this thesis is a design of a public library in the historical part of the city of Přerov. The locality that’s beeing solved, so called Na Marku, is situated at the point where the three important pedestrian routes meet on the bank of the Bečva river. Attractivness of the place is well increased by the nearness of both the main squares, the river and the unique well-preserved underpass used in the past by the brewery. Every landscape, every city and place have their own memory. The locality „Na Marku“ is packed with memories that run back to the first settlements on the river bank, the construction of the city walls, and up to the recent reconstruction of the Tyrš bridge. Throughout the history the place was formed by the local inhabitans and their varoius activities. Those gave origin to historical and spatial layers that overlay and complement each other and have – in Přerov, as well as anywhere in the world – a huge influence on one’s identification with a familiar place. This is where the church used to be. This is the path that leads down to the river. This is where the lime-tree blossoms fall down like snow in summer. In my thesis I aim for truly understanding the “genius loci” and designing a building that would bring a new sense of life to this weary but memorable locality.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on areas prone to inland floods and more specifically on the municipality of Acharnes, Attica, Greece. Usually, flood risk management strategies are treated as an engineering problem. Here, the floodplains/wetlands are going to be addressed as an asset and reveal the role of the landscape as a dynamic way for climate change mitigation and adaptation. Furthermore, such an approach can also offer potentials not only for water quality and management but also for benefiting the public spaces and open a discussion concerning awareness and engagement. Within the context of Attica, flood prone areas are not only ecologically deprived but also places of inequalities and loose social capacities. Acharnes is not an exception. Thus, the vision of this thesis is to investigate an alternative way for flood resistance by incorporating tools and methods capable of strengthening local communities. The thesis will investigate the following questions: •How can cities adapt to water issues and how can public space be used towards this end? •Can design for flood management be incorporated into a greater strategy connected to building relations?

Abstract:
The waterfronts of major rivers play an important role in the development of settlements. On the territory of Slovakia, however, there are many more small flows whose potential remains unused. It also includes the river Domanižanka, which forms one of the main urban axes of Považská Bystrica and is a significant element of the whole region. At present, it is designed for a flood flow with a trough recessed into supporting stone - concrete walls. In the built-up area of the city, this river flows through a diverse territory. In my diploma thesis I focus on six spaces with their own atmosphere and varying degrees of intimacy. These spaces lie along the flow on the busy line of the main city center with its local center at the SNP. To these spaces I assign a certain character, or, on the contrary, I support the existing one. I respect the existing values of places and I try to integrate their interventions into parts. The basis of the proposal is to create an adequate pedestrian and cycling link between these sites with regard to the quality of the individual stories of these places. Where water still represents the primary element of shared viability between nature and its inhabitants, humans. Water as a basic condition for the existence of life. Water as one of the elements, used to regenerate the body and the soul. To cleanse the city and the place.

ABSTRACT: This Final Project Master aims to improve the relationship between the city and the river within the territory of Ajuda and Belém, and also, develop strategies for the rehabilitation, requalification and improvement of the transversal streets that establish the link between the waterfront of Belém and Alto da Ajuda. The intervention area, between Alto da Ajuda and the waterfront of Belém, is characterized by the prevalence of major cultural facilities, such as Mosteriro dos Jerónimos, along the riverfront and the University Campus in Alto da Ajuda, leaving between these two hubs a void in terms of activities. This paper aims to define an intervention strategy for the territory that establishes links between the existing attractive hubs, with the creation of new activities and requalification of public spaces, in order to unify the territory and promote closer ties between the city and the river. The solution found for this territory aims to fill the void spaces and expecting spaces, with the creation of quality public spaces and the introduction of new economic, social and cultural activities capable of attracting different types of users and promote mobility between the poles of attractiveness created.

ABSTRACT: The resemblance between the territory and the architectural object is established through the identification and understanding of the constituent elements of the Barreiro estuary landscape. The relationship between the place of Alburrica and the object is built on the history of the past and nowadays landscape’s memories, the motto for the framing of programmatic intentions and the source of inspiration of the adopted gestures. The problem of the urban voids in Barreiro, due to the process of deindustrialization, left the city with areas of big expectation present in its riverside front, of which Alburrica is part. The work developed on Aburrica focuses on the buildings in proximity to water and on their ability to establish experiences with it, exploring the understanding of this factors as objects of exception. The equipment emerges as an urban element that not only reestablishes the encounter between the city and the river, but also adopts the poetic theme of water, combined with the elements of the place’s memory. Also, the reference to the estuary’s life is not only resigned to its biological component but also to the unity between the various elements that constitute it, both in terms of human experiences in this environment and bioclimatic level. Thus, the new equipment, working on the land/water boundaries, absorbs a dimension of privilege using it to establish the encounter between man and water. This celebration arises through the permeability with river and sharing of public space.

The diploma project is resolving the possibilities of designing contemporary buildings into the historical context of city centre. The emphasis is aimed on urban integration of new volumes into the present city structure and its genius loci. The result of the design should be buildings with specific character and clear dispositions using quality materials. The area is located near the city centre of Hradec Králové and is defined by the streets Comenius, I.Herrmann and Hradecká. It is directly adjacent to the historic city center. In the middle of the area is flowing The Orlice River, which divides area into two separately designed zones, communicates with each other. The presence of the river is considered to be a distinctive urban-forming element that needs to be used and promoted in the city. One of the characteristics of the site is the poor state of public spaces, several significant barriers, whether moving, operational or visible and urban unconnected areas or unreasonable used areas and buildings. The surrounding of The Orlice River, flowing through the center of Hradec Králové, is from near future very important, but at the same time hard to handle. All three facts - the city center plot, the presence of the river, but also the neglected public spaces - leading this area rehabilitated, revitalized and made accessible to people.

The topic of my thesis is an architectural study of a multifunctional residental building located at Svitava river bank which is surrounded by streets named Masna, Krenova and Hladikova. The objective of the study is to design a building that would utilize the space effectively and restore its function. As a result of the study, my project is divided into three compounds with the inner being a semi-public space, linked to its sruroundings by many passages and two main boulevards. The three combounds are composed of one administration block which is four storeys and the other two compounds are five storeys high, with the ground and first floors being different facilities e.g. kindergarden, restaurant, bank ,café, clinics, library, gallery, shops and a senior center. From the third to the fifth floor there are designated housing apartments comprising of small economic flats. The building has a two-floor basement, with a supermarket, technical facilities and parking. The construction of the building is from monolithic reinforced concrete frame, with the horizontal structure composed of beamless slabs. The facade is designed by using a combination of two materials i.e. white plaster and timber cladding as horizontal panels.

Abstract:
The image of Benares (Kāśī, Varanasi) is closely associated to the architecture of its riverfront composed of ghats – steps and terraces – that stretch out in a monumental way on the concave bank of a meander formed by the river Ganges. The expansion of this riverfront has to be understood in relation to a cultural tradition that demands a close proximity to the waters of the river. The construction and development of this riverfront in time and the various ways in which each architectural element is integrated with the river bank, calls into question its impressive urban unity that forms a public space extending more than 6 km. The aim of this thesis is to identify the elements that have contributed to the origin and the development of this front. The architectural and urban form of the ghat is considered as a constructed flexible device adapted to a specific river environment, a characteristic topography and to practices linked to the culture of the place, which allows for easy access to the varying levels of the river's water level. Based on pictorial archives, interviews, measure drawings done on site and on official planners' drawings, I examine the techniques of hydraulic constructions best adapted to counter the river's currents, I observe and analyze the relations between the riverbank, the geography and the urban landscape so as to better approach the ghats' architecture and I explain the materialization of the ghat through the diverse practices and the symbolic trajectories that surround it. The particular relation that the city entertains with its river, through the architecture of ghats, explains its urban potential inherent to its development in time and space i.e. along its river bank

ABSTRACT: This Final Master’s Project – based on the knowledge of the current territorial situation of Algés and its adjacent areas – intends to explore the means through which it would be possible to being together the sports and cultural poles located respectively in Jamor - Cruz Quebrada and Belém, through the regeneration of the Algés river front. As such an urban regeneration project to rethink the Algés river front will be proposed. The area that is known today as Doca Pesca, Passeio Marítimo de Algés and Doca de Pedrouços is the specific area it will look at. The Algés river front is characterized by an extensive area once dedicated to fishing, but which is almost abandoned today; the few remaining buildings have little connection with the original activity. Another striking factor in the area under study is the fragmentation between the city and the river front. This is greatly accentuated by the presence of a railway line and wide roads to accommodate regular commuter traffic. These infrastructures separate the river bank from the centre of Algés. For this situation an urban project taking two foundational premises into consideration will be proposed: 1) a consideration of the longitudinal connection between Cruz Quebrada and Belém, including the riverside area of Algés, understanding how these three elements can be combined to assume a more continuous character that unites this whole river front. 2) studying possible ways of using public areas as an aggregating element in the regeneration project to overcome the current transversal relationship between the city and the river front, thus overcoming the barrier created by the railway line and the various adjacent wide commuter roads.

The theme of my disseration is an architecture study of multifunctional building which is surrounded by the streets Vranovská, Cejl and Jana Svobody and by the embankment of the river Svitava. Objective of the study was to design a building that would utilized the space of the plot effectively. The result of design is the construction which is characterized for its inner semi-public atrium space with link to the bank of Svitava and street Jana Svobody. It is five-storey house. In the first two stories there are different feature amenities (kindergarden, office building, restaurant, café, media library, gallery and other shops), and senior house. In the third floor and above there are designed flats for living. The part of the living area was also creating of new kind of housing called co-housing. The building has a basement, which is mostly for parking. The construction of the building is from monolithic reinforced concrete frame, horizontal structure consists of beamless slabs. Due to the huge area of the building, the facade is designed from the different kinds of materials: white plaster, light gray sheet metal, anthracite metail mesh and glass fiber.

Abstract:
The subject of the thesis is a part of the South Center of Brno. After a long period of time, the locality is starting to "wake up to life", thanks to the fact that after a few decades it was finally decided on the fate and location of the Central Station. Thus, it is expected to expand the city in a southern direction. Then incorporate adjacent areas to the center. The thesis follows the project from 2018, the subject of which was the design of an urban concept of a territorial unit defined by Opuštěná Street, the Lower Railway Station, the Svratka River and the planned new urban class located on the visual axis of Cathedral (st. Petr and Pavel). Therefore, the thesis deals with the architectural study of a part of this area, situated near the river Svratka, on the border of the newly emerging city embankment. It is a multifunctional block, with predominant use for housing with 136 apartments for about 450 inhabitants. This block is further divided into 3 buildings, which have two underground floors providing technological background, and parking spaces for the entire multifunctional block. Further, the architectural study focuses on one of these polyfunctional block objects and processes it in more detail. The building of the residential building, called "A" in the study, provides a total of 47 apartments. And in the ground floor of the building there are rentable spaces for various uses. The effort of the proposal was to create quality living in a unique location on the waterfront and provide the inhabitants with a view of the Svratka River and the park on the opposite bank, even though it is almost in the city center.

Theme of my work is arguable for the cities which are situated near the river. Riverbanks are really nice public space but a lot of them are not "designed for people". Before I started do this work I was thinking about places which are ignored or overlooked in Znojmo town. Yes, town has a lot of places which are interesting and need "new face". There are brownfiels but problems of these localities was designed many times. And I wanted to find some new way, try restore and improve public space in connecting by the river. I chose locality which connect two important buildings – Znojmo castle and Louka monastery. There is needed to improve connection this locality to town centre.

Abstract:
- How do we create a public space that can be used all year round? The square is an important part of the urban fabric, it is where communities are formed, and people meet, a non-commercial resource benefiting the inhabitants. They encourage chance encounters, diversity, a sense of communality, and democracy and are therefore key to a living city. These qualities are essential and must function year-round. An issue with the public spaces in Umeå is that they only function when the weather allows it. On rainy days and during the long winter season, people seem to retreat from the city’s squares into shelters, leaving them abandoned and acting only symbolic as public spaces. A common solution seems to be for people to reside in malls, cinemas, restaurants, or gyms. While this course might initially seem like a decent workaround, a majority of them come with restrictions requiring you to pay or limit the duration of your stay, turning public spaces into an exclusive commodity. I wanted to create a public square that functions all year round by encapsulating part of Renmarkstorget, an existing square in Umeå, thus adapting it to the Nordic climate. This enclosed and heated square contains seating areas, a bus terminal, public restrooms, and a light therapy room to meet passing people’s needs. The sheltered square is designed in an adaptable way to host events, food festivals, markets, and other cultural activities, which encourages longer stays in the square, promoting a shared sense of ownership of the square. The proposed enclosed square allows movement and has visual connections both through the building and vertically with large open courtyards between the levels encouraging people to take a break, explore the other floors, the building’s qualities, and the activities they offer. The square offers a space for life between buildings regardless of the weather.

The theme of the diploma thesis „Brno brownfields by the Svitava River“ Is design of contemporary city structure in Brno Husovice. The theisis deals with the analysis of the current situation, definition of problems and opportunities in the location and the design, based on these researches. Studied area is located on the riverbank of the Svitava River and is defined by Provazníkova, Dukelská třída and Svitavské nábřeží streets. In these days there are mostly located brownfields of the previous industry parks, storage spaces and development of family houses. The design puts emphasis on the gentle merge with the urban structure of the old Husovice and focuses on using modern architectonic and urban approaches as well, for example on multifunctionality of buildings. The riverbank is revitalised and attractive features are designed here, like the footbridges conneting both river sides and sittable stairs. These designs provide space for leisure time and a water control during the floods as well. The traffic solution is concerned on the design of the new Nová Dukelská street, connecting formerly Zbrojovka industry park and Provazníkova street.

Abstract:
The purpose of the project is to investigate the multi-story parking structures potential in relation to retrofit into public spaces. The project built on an alternative future scenario, there the amount of automobiles decreasing in our inner-city areas out from a mobility shift, linked to new technology and change of habits. This scenario will generate a spatial consequence on a city scale there several multi-story parking structures will become available for retrofitting into new types of uses and functions. This project investigates the potential and challenges of the retrofitting of multi-story parking structures out from contemporary practice, previous research, innovative projects and an actual case study of P-house Godsmagasinet in Malmö, Sweden. The work results in an exploratory design process in how P-house Godsmagasinet can be retrofitted into a public space out from a strategic design approach. There the design methodology is divided into different phases, to collect and use information simultaneously within the ongoing process. Through this project, I want to contribute with extended reflections and knowledge to the professions working with urban developments, and above all highlight the potential of the multi-story parking structure. The retrofitting of multi-story parking structures is related to sustainable urban development and is relevant in the professions dealing with contemporary and future urban environment issues, where I believe that this not only illustrates my own interest but is relevant to everyone who working with the urban environment.

Women in Dharavi have little social space except for their homes, in contrast to the menwho seem to be everywhere in the public space. If the status of women are to increase, theyalso need access to the public space. This project focuses on the interaction between women in common space in connectionto the homes and the public spaces in between. Common yards/gardens in between theunits are shared by four households creating a semi-private space. As the men are working, the women at home will take care of the garden and have a possibility to socialize withwomen from the other households. These common gardens have a clear visual connection to the public spaces, which areconnected to different play areas (playground does not seem to be the right word). As thewomen take their children to kindergarden or school they pass through the public space and can stay there to watch the children while they are playing. The children gives the women areason to be in public space. The women gives each other a reason to stay.

Abstract:
Dissent is intricately linked to the qualities of public space. While the First Amendment protects dissent, historical legal and social mechanisms have regulated protest and its relationship with public space. In the latter half of the twentieth century, a rigorous legal framework has emerged to both protect and regulate protest. Yet free speech rights are highly contested. The media are complicit in relating protesters to violence. This perception has been thoroughly constructed in the media since the World Trade Organization protests in Seattle in 1999. The September 11th terrorist attacks have further amplified concerns for security in public spaces. The increased securitization of the city during times of mass protests has been verbally and visually presented in both local and national media. This thesis focuses on the media's rationalization of the securitized city and the potential violence of protesters and questions the implications for free speech rights.

Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation into the role that public(ly accessible) space plays in contemporary society. Exploring how these locations can be utilised as a platform to better understand the relationship between citizens and their representatives. The social, political and economically motivated activity which engages with this spatial potential is protest . This thesis will research the way in which locations which are recognised as spaces of congregation such as squares, markets, plaza and parks are intrinsically political, both in the way these locations come into being and the way that their presence is utilised by a politically active user group. In tandem, the thesis will also research locations with a more temporary association with socialisation, but are utilised by activists for their spatial significance when pertaining to a particular cause, complaint or agenda which sparks an idealistic conflict. These are spaces which, as inhabitants of the city we all transgress; such as streets, thoroughfares and intersections. They often come into tension with existing boundaries within the city, such as lines of ownership, and other tools used to subtly control the structure of urban territories which are shared through the necessities of urban life.

Full text
Abstract:
Current models of visual spatial attention are based on the extent to which attention can be allocated in 2-dimensional displays. The distribution of attention in 3-dimensional space has received little consideration. A series of experiments were devised to explore the apparent inconsistencies in the literature pertaining to the allocation of spatial attention in the third dimension. A review of the literature attributed these inconsistencies to differences and limitations in the various methodologies employed, in addition to the use of differing attentional paradigms. An initial aim of this thesis was to develop a highly controlled novel adaptation of the conventional robust covert orienting of visual attention task (COVAT) in depth defined by either binocular (stereoscopic) or monocular cues. The results indicated that attentional selection in the COVAT is not allocated within a 3-dimensional representation of space. Consequently, an alternative measure of spatial attention in depth, the overlay interference task, was successfully validated in a different stereoscopic depth environment and then manipulated to further examine the allocation of attention in depth. Findings from the overlay interference experiments indicated that attentional selection is based on a representation that includes depth information, but only when an additional feature can aid 3D selection. Collectively, the results suggest a dissociation between two paradigms that are both purported to be measures of spatial attention. There appears to be a further dissociation between 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional attentional selection in both paradigms for different reasons. These behavioural results, combined with recent electrophysiological evidence suggest that the temporal constraints of the 3D COVAT paradigm result in early selection based predominantly on retinotopic spatial coordinates prior to the complete construction of a 3-dimensional representation. Task requirements of the 3D overlay interference paradigm, on the other hand, while not being restricted by temporal constraints, demand that attentional selection occurs later, after the construction of a 3-dimensional representation, but only with the guidance of a secondary feature. Regardless of whether attentional selection occurs early or late, however, some component of selection appears to be based on viewer-centred spatial coordinates.

Abstract:
The use of public space by young people raises issues in Australia and elsewhere in the world. Contests occur between the disparate players seeking a stake in the use and definition of public space. State and local government, young people, the security industry, shop owners, community groups and property developers are some of the major players. In a context of monitoring and control procedures, young people's use of public space is often viewed as a threat to social order (Loader 1996, Crane and Dee 2001, White 1998). This study considers critical intersections between young people and the control of public space. It employs an analysis of relevant youth, citizenship and public space theories. Particular attention focuses on the concepts of political, civil and social citizenship formulated by the British sociologist T.H. Marshall, whose key text Citizenship and Social Class (1950), is still relevant (see Yeatman 1994, France 1997, Mann 1995, Manning and Ryan 2004). Grounded Theory methodology as discussed by Glaser and Strauss (1967) is utilised in the surveying of high school students in Brisbane and Logan to discover their perceptions of a range of public space and citizenship issues. The overall aim of this study is to consider if a connection exists between young people, public space and citizenship and if the use of public space by young people may be understood from a broad rights perspective and the concept of social citizenship, as discussed by Marshall (1950). The self completion survey employed in this study asked 1122 high school students a number of questions about their local community, safety at school, the meaning to them of the word citizenship and their thoughts about CCTV. The key findings were: * Some communities are less concerned about young people, than others; * Most schools are safe, but a number are not. Teachers contribute to student's feelings of safety at school; * The word citizenship carries important meanings for most young people around belonging, community and taking part in community life; * CCTV surveillance does not necessarily make young people feel safe in using public space; * Most young people feel negatively stereotyped by their community; * Most local areas do not have enough youth facilities The survey data is discussed further throughout the study along with citizenship and public space issues.

Abstract:
The concept of the city has come to play a central role in the practices of a new generation of artists for whom the city is their canvas. Street art is a complex social issue. For decades, its presence has fueled intense debate among residents of modern cities. Street art is considered by some to be a natural expression that exercises a collective right to the city, and by others, it is seen as a destructive attack upon an otherwise clean and orderly society. This research focuses on various forms of street art from the perspective of the urban audience. The general aim is to further an understanding of how people interact with and respond to street art. Qualitative and quantitative data were gathered via direct participant observations of street art installations and 139 surveys conducted with residents in Portland, Oregon. Survey respondents distinguished between street art forms; generally preferring installations and masterpieces over tagging and stickers. More respondents considered graffiti to be a form of artistic expression, rather than an act of vandalism. Participant observations indicated that purposefully-designed street art can promote interaction between people, art, and public space. Random urban spectators became active collaborators; using art and performance to express themselves in public. These findings indicate there is a need to reconsider zero tolerance graffiti policies. Overall, these findings also contribute to a more informed discussion regarding the regulation, acceptability, and possibilities of unauthorized artistic expression in cities.

Abstract:
Focusing on human interaction with the dense built environment in a city, this essay exploresthe experienced space, i.e. the physical built space and the perceived space as one dimension. From this perspective, the essay considers the visual information that the built environmentprojects. The essay proposes a theorem for understanding and categorizing architecture basedon its potential diversity of activities that the building encapsulates. The ability to interpretand challenge the perceived understanding of the built environment supplies the basis for thekey concept of this essay: multi-faceted architecture. In this essay, multi-faceted architecture is a motto for architectural design and planning, andderives from the fact that the very meaning of a function for a given piece of architecture issomething that needs to be addressed further by the architect, designer or other buildingexperts. As our modern cities expand at an ever-increasingly higher speed, the need for publicspace with a multi-faceted architecture is needed more than before. Firstly, the essay definesthe concept of multi-faceted architecture and its constituents. Secondly, the essay supplies aframework for analysing Multifaceted architecture and a way of categorizing it. This essayaims at opening a deeper dialogue on architectural quality based upon theory from currentarchitectural theorists and architectural theory. The essay uses a sociological perspective tounderstand why appropriate architecture, in the context of the surrounding environment, canlead to a more successful activation of a given space. To test the theorem that concernsmulti-faceted architecture, the theorem is applied and tested in the old city of Malmö. Due tothe COVID-19 virus outbreak, these tests have been executed virtually. Thirdly, this essayreflects upon the role of multi-faceted architecture in a modern city.

Bendana, Fabio J. "Theorizing suburban public space in Kendall." FIU Digital Commons, 2001. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1504.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine whether public space in the suburbs has the same settings as that of a central city or if it has its own characteristics. In order to approach this problem the area of Kendall was thoroughly studied by examining aerial maps, historic images and writings of local historians such as Donna Knowles Born. Heavy emphasis was placed on the transformation of the original one-mile grid characteristic of the city of Miami. As the area of Kendall was being developed, the grid was transformed into an irregular and organic method of laying out a street system that directly affected pedestrian life. It became evident, therefore, that Kendall is primarily geared toward automobile movement, thus affecting the setting of public space. This also restricted social events forcing them to concentrate in specific places like the malls. These findings demonstrated that malls are centers of social interaction concentrating many social activities in one place. In other words, a mall serves as a common meeting place in the otherwise vast spread of the suburbs. This thesis also explains how public spaces in a suburban context can affect the community by working as filtering agents between the immediate context of a particular site and the overall city. The project, a "Wellness Center and Park" for the Kendall area, was an exploration of these filtering agents and the transitions they engendered. The research upon which this project was based recognized the important role of the site's history as well as extrapolating as to its future potential.

Liabäck, Löwstett Felicia. "Enabling temporary use of public space." Thesis, KTH, Urbana och regionala studier, 2018. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:kth:diva-222014.

Full text
Abstract:
Public space, where ordinary situations and everyday life takes place, is a concept that has gone from being ignored to becoming the core of urban development. As the interest of public space is increasing, so does the critique. A critique that in Kista criticizes public space for being neglected, segregated and scary. Nevertheless, Kista is standing before several urban renewal projects aiming to be a place of mixed functions and vibrancy. However, these projects are both time-consuming and complex and will not be able to address the issues within the nearest future. By introducing temporary use of public space, ideals such as placemaking and temporary urbanism may deal with the amount of time being consumed during the planning processes of formulation, approval, adaption and implementation. It is done so by activating space through meanwhile usage. By studying places, functions and actors in Kista, the aim is to develop a method to initiate and implement the concept of temporary use of space, in accordance to the Swedish planning system. Through a literature review, a city’s function is being analyzed, definitions of public space identified and urbans ideals/ theories explored. Furthermore, two urban renewal projects are being studied, where strategic structures of how to develop temporary initiatives is analyzed. From the literature review follows a case study where interviews and observations are being conducted to gain local knowledge and professional expertise. There are both general drivers and specific features found in Kista arguing for temporary use of space, which results in a strategy and a process. The strategy is of a comprehensive approach aiming to initiate the concept of temporary use while the process is about how to implement temporary activities. To initiate and implement temporary use of space several strategic structures are suggested. The study suggests an early implementation within a larger urban renewal project, developed together with a vision and municipal plan and program. The method should be of a top-down structure, led by Kista Science City and developed by the City of Stockholm and real estate developers in Kista. The community should act as co-creators during the development and implementation of temporary activities. Space chosen for temporary used should be done so with care, in relation to knowledge of what attracts people and preconditions in Kista. The structure of the process needs to be dynamic, giving room for changes and improvements.

The understanding of space relies on motion, as we experience space by crossing it. While in motion we sense the environment in time, interacting with space. The vision of this thesis is to incorporate people's motion into architecture design process, enabled by technology. Simulation tools that introduce human motion into the design process in early stages are rare to nonexistent. Available tools are typically used for deterministically visualizing figures and simulating pedestrians with the goal of analyzing emergency exits or egress. Such simulations are built without consideration for non-goal oriented interaction with space; this presents a gap for design. Additionally, simulations are generally governed by assumptions regarding people's motion behavior or by analogous models such as collision avoidance methods. However, the use of data from people can elucidate spatial behavior. Advancements in depth camera sensors and computer vision algorithms have eased the task of tracking human movements to millimetric precision. This thesis proposes two main ideas: creating statistics from people's motion data for grounding simulations and measuring such motion in relation to space, developing a Space- Motion Metric. This metric takes pedestrian motion and spatial features as input, seeks actions composed by speed, time, gestures, direction, shape and scale. The actions are elaborated as Space-Motion Rules through substantial data analysis. The non-prescriptive combination of the rules generates a non-deterministic behavior focused on design. This research maps, quantifies, and formulates pedestrian motion correlation with space and questions the role of data for projecting what space could be.
